Hearing him read this poem as Merrick, and actually feeling the frustration through a mere simulation is heartbreaking when you think of what Merrick had to live with everyday.

The researchers might have missed something very important.
Unlike the actor, who experienced those physical limitations for the first time - the real elephant man probaby had year to adapt to them. Thus, he could have developed a technique which helped him speak more clearly (Just like it takes a person with a new tongue piercing to learn to speak clearly around the tongue ring).

He saved up £50 which is equivalent to about £5,400 in todays money, but it was stolen from him by the manager of a freak show he was involved with. The same manager then abandoned him in Brussels. He had to find his way back to England by ship, and when he returned he tried ask strangers for help but no one could understand him and most were repulsed by his appearance. A crowd gathered around him gawking and jeering so a police man took him into a private room. Poor Merrick couldn't speak clearly enough to tell the policeman anything, but he was luckily carrying the card of Frederick Treves, a doctor who had examined him years earlier. Treves came to pick him up and he spent the remainder of his life living at London Hospital. The mans life was a tragedy

The poem has such a sadness...I can feel from it that he hates how he looks but also can't stand to be judged by the way he was born...created in God's eyes. And to blame him for how he is, is to be blaming god for making him. Which is very powerful. I feel so bad to hear how he felt in that poem... The moment of his emotion ingraved in that is powerful.

Every living thing in this universe will experience indescribable pain, physical and emotional. Does that mean there's no point? Should we all just slit our throats? All we can see is how fucked up this guy's body is, but do we appreciate that he could see out of one eye, hear out of one of his ears and had a perfectly normal left arm? His body was dysfunctional, but he was an intelligent and wise young man on the inside. The fact that all you can think is that god would never curse a man like he did Merrick isn't just ignorant, it's an insult to Merrick himself. Things just aren't that cut and dry. The "elephant man" had his entire life to learn to speak with these handicaps.. so I have a feeling he was able to speak more clearly than this actor who only had a few minutes to get used to them.

I know!!! I have been thinking about that lately. We are so fragile and there are so many people that have something wrong with them. So as someone that has basically nothing wrong with him and is a perfectly healthy person it makes me sick that im not out there in the world doing more. Doing things that not everybody can do. Everyone that's a normal healthy person should really get off their ass (including me) and kick it into high gear. Do good things for this world and help the people who cant not only help the world but cant help themselves.

We are not lucky we have a normal life. They are unlucky they don't. Being lucky means that you, out of a lot of people, are the only one with something good or better than everyone else.

From the movie you can see the tenderness of his heart and his dignity and self respect no matter how abused or neglected he was from others. Trying to comprehend what that soul went through is terrifying.
