    Thanks Alois, but you forgot to mention something crucial: Don´t make a service error. That´s why our trainer allways recommended to loosen up and take a deep breath before serving.
    Btw: What a nice surprise to see you in the trainers seat for the para-players in Birmingham.

    It's a process that is easy to do but also hard to do. Giving your opponent something that is hard for them to return, even if they are expecting that serve from you, is probably still the best idea. Of course when I do that and somehow they attack it, I'll be 2nd guessing myself for a moment but then I need to move on.

    It’s also good to leave a serve not done during the match to use as a surprise. However, I can’t really do this because I only have a handful of serves and variations.

    • @chebkhaled1985
      @chebkhaled1985 2 года назад +5

      I used to do that but then I realized that in general, opponents don't actually adapt quickly. So maybe that serve you were saving for 9-9 would have been very effective and you wouldn't even need to be in the 9-9 situation to begin with

      @@chebkhaled1985 That is an excellent observation.

      The problem with that is that you don't know how they will respond, they might even be surprised and get a lucky return. It's often better to keep it simple and get a predictable return.

      @@EAB1771 No worries, I speak from experience. Almost always when I tried the "secret" serve at deciding points the opponents were surprised, misread the spin, returned a very high and long ball, but it landed on the table and surprised me too, which made me miss a pretty easy 3rd ball.

    That's about the time I practise flicking my wrist a few times in a semi discrete fashion but make sure that opponent sees it..
    Then serve with no spin.. most of the time they fall for it and it's straight in the net or followed up with an easy kill shot

    But if you are against a very good player, you can't do the same serve often right? They can adapt quickly and no longer be affected by that serve

      Good players are often going to be able to return all your serves quite well. You might need to just play a really good point to win it. Still, it's important to think which serve would they have the most trouble with.

    • @djfunkychicken

      Depends on how you perceive the 'same' serve being.. the same serve with and without spin may 'look' the same but the return will react different

    Too much thinking and evaluation can cause you to play bad, most of the time I serve to the middle of the table. Dead balls are good here because the other player is expecting your "trick serve"...

      Other player can also expect that you might serve to middle faking a trick serve.

    If it's an very important game then it's time to use the secret serve that you only trained by yourself and have never shown in competition.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  2 года назад +4

      Maybe. But if that secret serve is really effective you might want to use it more often and then it won't even get to 9 all? Just a thought.

    • @SkepticalCaveman
      @SkepticalCaveman 2 года назад +2

      @@pingskills With the "secret serve" I didn't mean a generally good serve, but a tricky, suprising serve that will work only once. These are the kind of serves saved for special points.
      As an example that one time when Adam Bobrow tricked Timo Boll with his special serve, I doubt it will work twice.

      That is true. You should always be ready to play a good point as the player might return your serve well. I think it's still important to think which serve will the opponent have the most trouble with.
