- NEW COIN RESTORATION • Silver Roman Coin Rest...
I restored this small Roman coin several years ago, and was quite happy with the result despite this specimen being damaged and fairly low-quality.
This coin was allegedly found in modern-day Serbia.
Attribution (as far as I can tell): Constantius II Thessalonica Mint 337-340 AD (RIC 56)
CONSTANTI-VS P F AVG Bust of Constantius II, draped, cuirassed, right / GLORIA EXERCITVS, two Soldiers standing front,
heads turned inward at one standard standing between them, each holding spear and shield. Mintmark (SMTSB?): Thessalonica
I have about 30 of these coins. My grandparents lived in a village which is close to a Roman town called Iovia In Pannonia Province, now west Hungary. I remember when I was a child in the '90s, in spring and in summer after rain I went to the nearby corn fields somewhere around the ruins of Iovia and looked for Roman coins. I always found one or two. I didn't even need a metal detector. Good old days.
Great story. You have to go far afield to find such innocence these days.
Very cool. I've got one of these Gloria Exercitvs as a child too, when I started collecting coins
Are they all covered with whatever this guy's coins are covered with?
@@rerun3283 They were covered with dirt but I removed it with a needle. Now they are clean but I didn't use any preservative wax.
So satisfying watching you uncover another coin. Thanks for sharing your hobby with the world. It’s like watching a mini archeological dig and amazing to see how much dirt can be removed from such a small object. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to more of these types of videos. Also, that moment you can see the bronze when you wiggle the coin was awesome! 🙌🏼
So glad you enjoyed it! I agree, those moments are incredibly satisfying when you see all the work pay off. Thanks for watching!
I would have loved to hear more of your thoughts as you went about the cleaning process step by step, similar to your first video. These restoration videos are always more interesting when the audience are gaining an insight into the expert’s thought process as they go about their hobby/work. Something that the channel Baumgartner Restoration does very well. Looking forward to your next video!
Thanks for watching and for your suggestions!
Never get tired of watching you bring back an ancient coin back to life as it where,,,😮
Cheers!
Fascinating watching you uncover ancient art !
Welcome back! Been really looking forward to your next video
Hey, I've been watching your videos since yesterday. Awesome content, can't wait to see what coin you clean next!
Awesome! Thank you!
Your process is very calming. Great work.
Amazing can't wait to see your next videos....
Thanks for watching!
I discovered your channel by chance and I immediately subscribed. I think you could grow a lot in views and subscribers just by adding content regularly. I'd love to see a video in which you describe the tools you use and the technical process to clean coins. Thank you and best wishes
Thanks so much for watching and for your kind words!
I own one of these I have a huge collection of roman coins love seeing the restoration
Thanks for watching!
Love your videos, hope you continue to make them
Excited to see more of Nicks hobby. I remember the video back in the day where Wren drank his coin juice -_-
Hello from France! Nice vidéo! Just continue like this! 😉 Philippe
Omg you got some skills. Your work is brilliant please upload more
A friend and I recently found the same coin, actually almost the same..
Constantine I The Great ,two soldiers standing either side but with two standards. The dirt on it is incredibly hard, it has been standing in distilled water for days, but it does not come off at all with a wooden stick
Turned to be the loveliest one. That`s the way. Many thanks
Great video Nick !
Awesome results. Could you please tell more about the tools and the wax you are using?
Thanks for posting this. I’ve been looking forward to your next videos for a while now 👍🏽
Not what I expected from you nick but much respect!
Have you ever tried using a ultrasonic scaler that dentist use to remove plaque and tartar?
Love your vids, keep up the good work.
At the moment I am researching the coins you deem proper for cleaning and the tools you are using so that I can one day work on mine as well. Maybe an ideea for a vid down the line?
Love your work and how well you clean without damaging the patina and fine detail of these coins. One thing i find odd is how restored coins are devalued vs tarnished, rusty and dirty coins where alot of the details are obscured.
For the same reason other restored antiques have less value. By removing the original patina you are taking the long establish historic coatings that are now part of the object.
amazing work.
Отличное видео!
О, я такую купил на днях в аналогичном сохране. Здорово видеть как ее можно почистить.
Wow! Thanks for sharing!
It's not easy to clean a small coin as this. Great work!
Thanks 👍
Gran limpiez y gran video 👀👀👍👍👏👏
They “Gloria Exercitus “ type. Excellent!!
Gostei do seu trabalho meu amigo
I go for the mint mark first, nothing wose than a beautiful coin that I can't assign to a mint. :-)
Well done on the restoration work! I recently purchased another lot of uncleaned coins. I look forward to seeing how they turn out! What seller do you purchase from? I'd love to see the sestertius and get one for myself!
Hey man love your videos! Do you mind to share what tools you used to clean the coins? Thanks!
I really like your videos! Was that a microfiber cloth you used for the buffing? Also, how long did the full cleaning take?
SOoo happy i found this
Great video 🤘. What is your soaking process? Thankyou
I was advised not to clean my found silver coins with a q-tip cause it can cause damage. I dipped it in water and ever so slightly removed most of the dirt with it. I would like to hear your opinion on that since i would think that a scraping tool and needles would cause more dmage on the surface than a q-tip! The coins are mid 1800's silver coins found on an active farm field so they are allready quite damaged. Thank you!
Nice relaxing videos, i really liked the one before this cause you seemed to talk us through your process a bit more. New sub!
Ancient coins are most often covered with a hard layer called a patina. The dirt obscures everything anyway and must be removed. The patina, if carefully treated, will hold up well.
If you want to clean silvers, rolling a q-tip with a solvent can work well. It depends more on your personal circumstance. I have cleaned a few roman silvers that came out great.
@@nathanielscreativecollecti6392 Thank you! The hardness of the patina was new information for me!
That cleaning tip is it mounted onto an ultra sonic vibration tool with inter changeable tips ? Good video I often use natural soft bees wax lip balm seems to work well :)
Very cool video, I think though in your editing process, you can perhaps omit the original sounds, which are obviously sped up, and just keep the overlay of the background music, or perhaps as others suggested, you can add narration. I only mention this because the original audio under the music sounds like a possum chewing on sticky cheese. Just a suggestion as I'm not a professional video editor. But you at least have yourself another subscriber. Looking forward to your next restoration
Thank you so much, as a own a fairly clean Roman coin and I thought the background was two women holding a javelin.
Oye, another thing is that I was wondering if you can help me identify my fairly clean coin 😀
where do you get these coins? I'd love to get some and clean them up for my collection.
Красавчик!!!
شكرا على جهودك وحقا تستحق الاحترام والتقدير وشكرا
What would happen if you used an ultrasonic cleaner? Would it damage the surface?
really nice, can i know where to buy this tools ?
Bunlari neyle temizliyorsunuz hangi maddeyi kollaniyorsunuz yazarsaniz seninirim simdiden teşekürler
Wow!
BRO I HAD NOO IDAY YOU DID THIS
Interested to know how much you pay for these encrusted coins. I’ve been looking on eBay at batches that are about £1 to £2 per coin in batches of 10 to 20 coins. Does that seem about right to you for the quality of coins you get. Or should I be paying a bit more for better quality. Many thanks. Love the videos so far.
someone named jeffscoins has a sale going on where you can get fairly clean Roman coins for about 15 USD, if you buy 3-50 coins you’ll get extra stuff
You get what you pay for. $2 coins will most often be so worn or damaged they are hardly worth cleaning except to practice on. $4-6 will get you nice LRBC to clean, $12 and up will almost always guarantee a keeper, going higher and you want to be buying coins on a very particular per coin basis. Start with a bamboo skewer, sewing needle, good light source, and lots of distilled water for soaks! Happy cleaning!
Sorry for my ignorance on the subject:
Why not use a product that dissolves surface dirt instead of removing it with a punch?
Wouldn't it be more effective?
Aren't there products that remove surface dirt without damaging the metal of the coin?
Let it be known that it is more attractive if you do it the way you do it, more intriguing, but I don't know if it is the only method or why it is.
Great job, congratulations.
When it comes to a 2000 year old roman coin just about anything is able to destroy it.
Real old boss
Vc coloca no azeite antes de limpar, Ou faz a seco mesmo?
Hi, what material is the first pencil you use for dry the coin?
Nice page. Is this coin rare and valuable? I have one like it
I have same coin and I was looking for where to restore it. Thanks
Hiya, i was wondering if i can show you a image of a roman coin i have, its the same one as this one, but the emperor on it is not the one you had.
what is the mixture you smear with after cleaning ?
Can you buy coin cleaning pencils like yours in the video on Amazon?
I am guessing the coins are soaked in something. Water and dish soap? Or some other surfactant? Great videos.
How do you scrape it with metal without scratching it? Also, where the hell do I know you from?
I have found 10 coins in the same spot near the river..
The coins are in bad shape but i keep them, maybe i will try to clean the dirt
You should collect the dust and send it to a university to have it dna tested and check if it is possible to identify some of the previous owners.
Nice i got a coin that is pretty similar it just that mine is Constantinus II and a Follis
Have you tried using the thorn from the hawthorn or blackthorn bush ?It's what the British museum uses to clean coins and artefacts. If you want to look up something cool, look up ,"Roman licking dog " it's what we found in 2017
I love this suggestion and will be looking into acquiring some of these thorns to try out! Cheers!
@historyathome3254 the thorns won't scratch the metal 👍
@@historyathome A bamboo skewer can be almost as good.
@@nathanielscreativecollecti6392 I use rose thorns from my garden, I find bamboo skewers only last for a few minutes before they must be discarded. Thorns stay rather sharp for much longer.
@@jasonallain6153 I get that, I use a scalpel to resharpen my skewer as needed. Takes a month or two to use one up entirely that way.
Hi nice vid. Do you soak your coins first before restoring?
Yes! Distilled water for at least several weeks.
@@historyathome several weeks, ok, I never soaked that long I will try it,,,thanks
What volume of the RIC is this? RIC VI?
Excellent work! Very diligent work and process. Looking forward to your Sestertius video in the future.
I was wondering, how the heck do you get such good close up video of your coins? Are you using a macro lense on a DSL or something else? Keep up the good work!
To be clear, it's not the close-ups when you're cleaning, it's when you have it in hand.
What common tool can I use to clean coins ?
Wow there was a coin under all that crap.
Where to look for tools for cleaning coins?
I am a total ignoramus about these things, but is there a reason why an ultrasonic cleaner would not be used to clean the dirt off such coins? Might the coin fracture? Thank you for the video!
They heat up quit a bit but it does work.
Just wondering.... have you thought of using an ultrasonic cleaning tank to clean your coins?
white liquid that you rub ? and nice video
Wish there was some other tool you could use besides steel. Teflon maybe?
hi, how much that coin cost. i mean are ancient coins expensive ? sometimes i see people selling 2000 years old coins just for 50 euro. but i think the coins are not genuine, original coins must be expensive not cheap
In coins old doesn't mean expensive. Low denomination Roman coins can sometimes just be worth a few euro.
What wax was that?
En son sürdüğünüz şey nedir ?
Огонь сам так чищу и патина сохраняется , а в химию лучше не бросать
Where I can get preservative wax???
Kindly provide details....
Thanks in advance
Renaissance wax is the term, ebay or Noble Roman Coins has it. I'm sure its available in other places too.
renaissance wax can be bought on ebay / amazon as well as most Online antiquities dealer. I would get the 65 ml tin , as you don't need much of the stuff to put on the coin. And it has a shelf life.
Are metal tools really appropriate? Modern steel is much harder than ancient steel, not to speak of bronze. I keep thinking tools from tropical hardwood or something like that should be much gentler.
Where can I buy ancient coins?
greetings, very good videos, I'm from Croatia, my hobby is metal detecting. I have a lot of coins and other Roman finds that I don't need. Is it possible for me to send you all the findings that I don't need so that you can use them for a yt video?
That's awesome! If you send me them to clean i'd be happy to make a video about the process. You can contact me at archaeologyathome@gmail.com
@@historyathome If he has too many for you, send me some too!
@@nathanielscreativecollecti6392 😂😂 I would like to get some golden ones. If he has too many of them.
Wouldn't it make better sense to first dip the coin in distilled water so that as much as possible of the mud/soil gets wet and comes off, and only then start with the needle scraping in the areas that are still remaining? This would obviously result in a lot less scratches on the ooin.
The coins are soaked for weeks in water. This hard dirt will hardly ever come off with just water, you need to use tools.
@@historyathome Well, it wasn't made clear if/that the coins were pre-soaked for weeks. But if that is soil or "hard dirt" then soaking in water for weeks will most certainly loosen the soil. There is no soil that is completely imprevious to water.
@@budsurtees4224 Whatever you say dude. Every coin is different but I can tell you from experience that 95% of the time a long soak will not remove dirt. Sure, the loose stuff on top will come off, but you still need to manually remove the rest.
did you buy ROMAN coins like WRL??
Are your the guy form corridor digital? Nick?
Yes!
I don't know much about coins but why are these coins worth a lot more than what they are going for ?
bench grinder with a wire wheel would be faster
Dirty was protecting coin
I have coin but l dont know is fake or orjinal can you help me
Мне кажется что это Констанций Газ...впрочем..
I own a lot of this coin
I own about 1,000 Roman coins and a Byzantine Jew
I bought ten uncleaned coins, waiting for them to be delivered. In the meantime, I just watch others clean the coins. I have a problem I think.
probably 😂
You're in good company here!
Same, I just bought 18.
Thought I was the only one
Tools used?
Looks like a needle and a diamond tip bit mounted in a micro screwdriver handle.
If you want to try, get a bamboo skewer, sewing needle, scalpel, fiberglass brush, distilled water, and renaissance wax. A magnifying light stand also helps a lot.
I have antiquities belonging to King Caesar Julius 100 BC
That's awesome!
