I got the best results cleaning ancient coins by using electrolysis. Baking soda works as an electrolyte.

Great video, Subscribed! I've been on eBay since the beginning-late 90s. They USED to care about fakes. There was a time when you could report these "ridiculous" sellers and they would be warned/removed. Now they stopped caring-which took longer to catch up to me than it did for them. I still kept reporting fake sellers, and have even offered to volunteer my services for FREE to help them clean up what has now become a cesspool of fakes, (or overpriced junk deals). If its not a sneaker or a Pokemon card, its buyer beware! They better start caring soon-because other auction sites are starting to gain traction and pull away collectors. Here is a popular one, the "Slabbed Ancient Widows mite sized coin" WHAT?? 1. not slabbed-its in a fake slab-like snap case, 2, not a widows mite coin. its usually a tiny late Roman minnum, unidentifiable, always low grade or WORSE! My friend, against everything I warned him about, bid & won one of these for ,99c, why not for that price? not bad so he thought. I laughed so hard when he got it. First, they charged him $12.99 s&h which he wasn't expecting. Then it was a wiped out late roman bronze CUT by the seller into the size of a widows mite!! Loved your reaction to the Diadumenian denarius! And finding the "NEST"-hilarious! Some of the fakes are so bad! A lot of EID MAR fakes too! I get the same auto response from eBay, thanking me for being a "part of the caring community" and they are reviewing the situation which is followed up with a message of, 'no action at this time', because they are making money, and if 2 of every hundred files a fraudulent claim, it is still worth it to ebay to let them continue to scam. The problem they dont realize is this lack of care they exude in this category will transition to other categories. If I cant trust you to monitor fake coin sellers, how can I possibly trust you to monitor fake sneaker sellers? Or fake autographs, or fake anything sellers? You either care and protect your customers, or you dont. It is a bad business practice that will catch up to them when more reliable sources take them over, and they become another "etsy". What is the name and type of the equipment you use to clean?

I found in my garden, buried, 150 years old coins ---- looking like yours, 15,6 kilograms. I am an ammunition selfloader, so i have tumblers. I soaked the coins for 10 hours in mixed water : soap, vinegar, salt. Then i tumbeled the coins with little stainless steel pearls for 3 hours. Result perfect like brandnew without scratches or other defects.😮😊

Why not use isoprop to remove the dirt? Am i missing something?

I'd love a more in depth video on how to authenticate coins, such as when you were saying if they have a lip around the seal then they're replicas, yet many of the authentic pieces you showed shared that same attribute.

This is so cool! Came across a few of your videos and it's just fun to watch and learn! I was wondering if you could maybe give the general market price of a finished coin at the end (maybe not your coin or how much you would sell it for but other similar ones if available). Also I think it's really cool to watch you explain the cleaning, but I think to better keep your long term viewers you should consider going more into who the given emperor was or gods or whatever that make that coin unique so the videos stay a bit more unique to each other and keep the interest going. Super cool!

i have a lot of Roman coins but the sand on it is so so hard i cannot remove it proper and if i do i damage the coins. is there a solution to help get the sand soft? without damaging the coin. :)

I understand the argument made by some that to clean a coin is to ‘devalue’ it BUT this presupposes that the only value of a coin is the sum it might generate if sold. For me, this kind of restoration is an act of genuine love for history. I think we can be all too willing to fall into the trap of assigning market value as the only metric worthy of consideration.
