Entertaining yet scary for the novice collector thinking of purchasing ancient coins. Do you think that buying ancient coins from sellers at coin shows is relatively safe? Yeah, please show us some more videos like this to help keep things into perspective. Good job.
Just basing off of other collector's goods shows, it's a coinflip (lol) whether you're getting legit stuff. None of this stuff is really regulated too well, beyond your usual fraud charges or whatever, and good luck getting that applied when it's like a $20 coin.
I really appreciate these kinds of videos! Not enough coin nerd youtubers actually use their skills to provide this sort of helpful content that is great for novice collectors (and entertaining for more experienced ones). Earned an extra sub :D
I'd love a more in depth video on how to authenticate coins, such as when you were saying if they have a lip around the seal then they're replicas, yet many of the authentic pieces you showed shared that same attribute.
Sir, not only does Ebay have fakes, they don't do anything to remove them. Thank you SO MUCH for this video. It just 100% supports what I was seeing with my own eyes. I'm in IT, and was an art major, and just looking at the artwork on some of the fakes is hilarious, and times are tough, so expect to see knock offs of all kinds of coins and conditions. 20 bucks adds up fast when you multiply by 50. I saw this sellers coins, and I thought...WOW, I didn't know they were into anime so long ago! The emperor of Rome looks like Dragon Ball Z or Pokémon. He has all the coins up for bid, and he has some really good looking fakes too. They all have bids, they are all 20+ and they are all fake. The sad thing is when you read the negative comments, the last 3 from this month say...This is a fake gold coin, it's copper. He is located in the UK. The "good" fakes are well sought after coins, not in great condition, but worth the money (if real) because of how rare. Like the medusa coins I see so often. All collectors would like to have one in the collection, even if it's not perfect, but still very clean, for 20-30 bucks. They sell for 1k+ depending on condition. Anyway, THANK YOU. For everything, the cleaning videos, and this one. It was perfect timing.
You just saved me from a purchase dude. I just started back in coin collecting. First thing i thought of was getting into acients and I saw that Theo* in the slab. I've been pondering its purchase for a couple of days now. I like the slab because it's for me easier to identify for fakes or not as I'm not experienced enough. You just earned a subscriber and a like. Thank you for your content!
Nice video, you are probably saving a few new collectors some money. Here in Germany, the scams are mostly the same, except for the fact that even low value third to fourth century coins are being sold and shipped from the Balkans on mass. People really gotta be careful out there
Do you have a website? I am pretty sure my friend purchased a couple fakes but would like an expert to look at a pic. The ancient coin reddit looks like a start, anywhere else you can suggest?
I love replica coins myself, as long as they're being sold as such and they're priced accordingly (this is, under $2 from the Sellers I buy them from). They are a great addition to any modest coin collection when money is a concern and a cheap tool to introduce children to this world and teach them a bit of history to boot.
Informative video. Now I have to go back and look at a few that I bought 10 plus years ago on ebay. I still have a container of dirty coins sitting in olive oil for about 8 years now. Lol. Since then i heard someone say that olive soaking is out of favor. My interest in ancient coins was lost for a long while. Recently I decided to attempt some cleaning.
@@historyathome Yeah, perhaps you were talking about an auction price? I really didn't see any issue with a $30 Trajan denarius but i'm also not running a RUclips channel about ancient coins so i don't wanna act like im some kinda authority lol
I actually own a fake Egyptian coin. I have no clue where it came from as I just found it in a coin collection my grandpa had with otherwise pretty normal german 19th century Coins. Very strange
Is it possible to report these sellers, like coinbob for selling only fakes and pass them as authentic ancient examples? I'm sure Ebay should do something with these misers.
Most of the coins here are clearly listed as a reproduction ('commemorative silver plated'), which was reflected in their price of only 10-15 dollars. I don't think that's either a scam, or a 'fake'. If you don't get that it's a modern reproduction, that's your own fault. And the one that had REPRO in the title in all caps? You're calling that tiny writing?
Dictionary defines the word FAKE as: "One that is not authentic or genuine; a sham." So yes, 'clearly listed repros' are fakes. If you don't understand the words of your native language and come up with wrong ideas such as 'repros aren't 'fakes', that's your own fault.
@@poa2.0surface77 I'll just agree to disagree. Because once a coin has REPRO stamped on it, it's a completely different item to me. It's not pretending to be something it isn't.
I touch upon this in the video very clearly and state that I am in favor of clearly marked repros. You sound a lot like an ebay seller of fake coins the way you are here trying to defend their shady practices...

I have little experience with coin shows but I would guess and hope that the sellers are vetted to make sure they aren't grifters.

I appreciate that!!
i would love if you did more videos like this! i have been wanting to get into roman coins but am intimidated, so this is both helpful and funny
Glad you enjoyed - thanks for watching!
Great, informative video for ancient coin hunters!! Thanks!!
You're most welcome!

Thank you! I've been collecting for decades, but I just started collecting the Ancient coins about a year ago. Too many scammers everywhere.
You're welcome!

Extremely true, it's a major issue with that platform but it's up to the consumer to be informed and vigilant. Thanks for watching!
Great video! I can't wait for antoher long video restoring an ancient coin... Congrats on your wokr! Ave Caesat mortiturant te salutant🦅

Interesting! Saving people from getting scammed is definitely the goal with these kinds of videos.
Thank you for posting. Really funny 😂😂😂
Hi, great video. Very informative. I am an amateur collector so this I find very helpful. Keep up the good work. Have a good one eh!😁🇨🇦
So glad it was helpful, cheers!
As an eBay seller (different niche) I loved this video and the “nest” description had me cackling!! Love it
The only thing that came to mind in the moment lol
Great video! Really helpful for new collectors. Can’t wait for more in this style.
Glad it was helpful!
There are TONS of them. I looked and it's disgusting to see how many fakes are out there. Just remember, 'IF IT IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE.' 😉
That’s a great rule to keep in mind haha
Do you have a website? I am pretty sure my friend purchased a couple fakes but would like an expert to look at a pic. The ancient coin reddit looks like a start, anywhere else you can suggest?
Where do you buy your uncleaned coins?

They are a great addition to any modest coin collection when money is a concern and a cheap tool to introduce children to this world and teach them a bit of history to boot.
Much agreed!!
Very helpful. I probably over paid on some of my early purchases but I did manage to avoid fakes.
We've all fallen for some scams before - that's one way to learn!
And Ebay does absolutely nothing about them. I reported an obvious cast scam with reviews saying it's a cast, but Ebay says everything is fine.

I'm loving Numismatics with Nick!
Hey fancy seeing you here!
Thank you very much
Great Stuff, thx
My pleasure!
Class act. Thank you.
Hi great video! I realized at 5:18 you said that the Trajan denarius is a bit overpriced, but from what I know that's a pretty solid price.
My mistake! That makes perfect sense seeing that a lot of the market seems high at the moment, and it being Trajan!
To be fair, he did say: "MAYBE a bit overpriced."
@historyathome yeah lol thr market prices are through the roof nowadays unfortunately

Thank you for the help! I’ve been looking at ancient Assyrian carvings and I think most of it is fake. Sellers have 100% reviews though.
Definitely avoid antiquities on ebay as well! Planning on making a new video about that. Cheers!
Plz make more videos like this !!
Working on it! Thanks for watching.

eBay used to care. they dont anymore.
Big ups ⬆️
they can fake any coin, even use the right metal by melting low quality ancient coins from the same area and time and using the hammering method
A trained eye can still usually spot coins made in these methods
