What a shame about Hooper. He's one of the best Australian players in the past 20 years and an absolutely class act.

    • @tcr4507
      @tcr4507 11 месяцев назад +5

He is brilliant and I can’t think of a player who puts in the same level of effort as him, but I feel his jackalling decisions have become very poor. He gets penalised a lot for putting his hands on the ball when he shouldn’t. Mcreight is way more accurate and I they get more pay from him. Minimising penalties is a key for this wallabies team.

@@tcr4507 You seem to be ignoring the fact that he has played 124 games as a loose forward. Let's compare him to Shalk Burger. 6 yellows in 80 something games. It comes with the territory. Bloody Brian Habana racked up 7 yellows in roughly the same number of games as Hoops and he's a flamin' winger. I'm not buying the "Hooper is a disciplinary liability" arguement. Tell ya story walkin.

I appreciate the sentiment and his service to Australian rugby will never be forgotten. However the way things stand, Hooper, on form, isn’t even in the top 10 Australian loose forwards. Even at 7 I’d put both Kemeny and Wilkin ahead of Hooper, not to mention mcreight.

Cooper has been carrying around his scrapbook for sometime now so not surprised to see him dropped. Hooper I think has been overshadowed by McReight the last two seasons and while a good player I have never rated him as a Captain. Bloody mistake leaving Samu out. Reckon Jones trying to motivate Shelton by making him Captain. Sorry for McDerment as I don’t think he did anything wrong last weekend in his one and only game as Captain

He's clearly acknowledged, given past form, that his tactics and personality have a shelf-life, and has bet on his ability to get more from a more youthful, impressionable crop than from those who've been around long enough to know that his tricks and schtick are fine when the team is performing, but do more harm thsn good when they aren't.

I remember when I was a kid playing Rugby 2004. There was a franchise game option (basically you buy players to play for your team). As an immature kid I decided that I would ignore the stats and quality of each player and instead buy all 8 of the heaviest forwards in the game (intheir respective positions). I ended up with a 1000kg foward pack that would continuously fall off tackles, move slowly and infringe everywhere. Why do I feel like eddie jones has done this in real life? Who do you make captain? Let me see who is the tallest and heaviest player....
These wholesale changes can definitely work at times, it did for France and the Bok's so I guess we'll have to wait and find out.
On a side note, I feel for Michael Hooper, he's been their best player year in and year out for the majority of his career. I don't know the inner workings of what's going on, but it feels disrespectful to such a great player.

I think this shows Eddy’s mindset. I think he’s blaming players for bad loses, not tactical nor coaching directives. Remember the AB’s went through a similar patch until Rugby NZ added Joe Schmidt into the advisory coaching mix as an extra piece to shore up team management. Since then the Forster team so far seems to have gotten a handle on things basically with the same squad.

Eddie has made some brave changes here and he seems to be steering the team towards change, which this team desperately needs. Now, if Australian Rugby is seriously thinking about the future (next world cup cycle and RWC at home) they also probably need to start thinking about a whole new structure and coaching team. As much as I like Eddie, I think he is the man to push the team through all the hard changes they need but not the man to bring the team to the next level.

Wow, was not expecting the big Kiwi born fella to be picked as captain. Saying that he does come across as a real down to earth humble guy so he might be just what they need in a leader. It was a nice gesture of Skelton, when the final whistle blew in the Dunedin game, he helped a couple of AB player's off the deck, shows the big fella has a big heart too.
To me, it looks like they're trying to build towards the 27 WC rather than this one. They could even struggle to get out of their pool? I feel a bit for Hooper as he's been a bloody good gutsy 7 for them for a long time with not a good win rate unfortunately (not due to his own efforts). So so sooooo happy my man Matt Faessler got into the squad. Have been commenting on twocents videos for the past few months saying we needs to be the starting 2. I would have slotted Samu, Hodge, Wilson or O'Connor into the starting 23. Excited to see Gleeson back action. Really hoping Jorgenson is match ready and actually over his injury - definitely loving the fresh starters as and someone said below, its hard to remove the legacy players from the squad. Would be interesting to see how many reserves we are bringing to replace the injuries. Would be pretty having Skelton run at you. And Bell has been on fire the past two games, congrats on the return. Firstly,
Great video as always, you have been such a find for me to get hyped about the RWC, bless you sir keep up the work :)
    Secondly,
It's a ballsy move to pick this team, making Will the captain. We need him to have the biggest tournament of his life to win, so making him captain might just raise his level.
Picking young guys that will have a go is another awesome move, it's a big occasion and having a bunch of young hungry talented guys is a good call. Carter at 10 is the right move, quade didn't look like himself IMO. and getting rid of those legacy guys wouldn't have been easy but if you want to make an omelette... picking on form is another great call. We have suffered so much as a rugby supporter, this team looks really fast and aggressive.
Also happy Michael Hooper is not there, Matt deserves his spot no question and IMO Hooper might have played his last game for oz

@@owaindavies9971Eddie coached England to their longest run of success in decades. He ran out of road after 2019; his top assistants all bailed, the playing group became stale and disillusioned, and the next rank weren't ready to step up. Not entirely his fault, though he deserves a share of blame for driving everyone like a slave-master. However, English rugby has large systemic issues with player development, the structure of their domestic competition and managerial pigheadedness that have held them back for years, so the state of England today is more reversion to type than anything else. Eddie's undoubtedly a skilled rugby coach, intelligent analyst, and tough motivator but his abrasive personality and extreme methods have a habit of burning people out, which is why it's usually best to see him moved on after two or three years.

Great work by Eddie Jones. Tough choices needed to be made. Risks needed to be taken. More of the same wasn't gonna cut it.
Only thing that I still don't understand is Eddie's hard-on for Suli Vunivalu. Leleiwasa is a great choice. Anyone who is familiar with his game knows just how quickly he clears the ball from the ruck. He may not see much game time but he will be invaluable on the training paddock for the speed our defensive structure needs to get ready for.
We took a young team to the 1991 World Cup and won it. Everyone remembers that as the golden age of Aussie running rugby. Horan, Little, Campese, Lynagh, Roebuck. What many have forgotten is that it was our defense that won us the trophy. We conceded only 3 tries in the whole tournament. Two of those were in the 1st pool game against the Argies. 1 in the quarters against Ireland and nothing else. That is insane defense. This Wallabies team doesn't have that. Our attack is going to have to be unpredictable and unstoppable, there we do have a chance if we can gel.

With the rules the way they are you can bring a new player into the team for any injuries, so 3 tens isn't really neccesary. You can have O'Connor on the plane and into France in 24hrs if either Gordon or Donaldson get a bad injury.

Dropping Quade Cooper is music to my ears. He's been one of the regulars over the last 15 years and the last 15 years have been dreadful.
Hoops gives away too many penalties, makes poor captaincy calls, has been in average form and has lost speed and size since his sabbatical so good call omitting him, but I would have at least had Pete Samu in the squad.
I'm happy Eddie is willing to clear out the players who keep coasting into the squads based on reputations that don't exist with form they haven't displayed and he's willing to drop the guys who have developed a lazy, losing mentality ✅
Wallabies haven't won a game by more than 20 points for 4 years 💀
They either get smashed or they have a close win/ loss ...never do they absolutely thrash anyone.

This is one crazy squad. I get that EJ wants to build for the future, but normally you do that AFTER the world cup. Not having Cooper, Hooper and Samu is just crazy in my opinion. There's a serious lack of leadership and experience in this squad. Hooper has been a great servant for Australian rugby over the past years and he deserved a better send-off than this. This squad is quite green. Only one flyhalf, ballsy or stupid? The only way this team makes sense is if Eddy is planning on keeping essentially the same Wallabies squad for the next 4 years. Does that mean every Australian player not in this squad can only hope to play for their country if one of these anointed players gets injured? Seems to me like Eddy's targeting the old "the team that has played together the longest, plays together the best and wins internationals" strategy. This makes me fear even more for the future of Australian rugby as it will undoubtedly create an elitist attitude amongst the chosen few and demotivate those on the outer.

As an Aussie i like and dislike this squad:
    Likes:
Eddie needed to break the culture of losing. He gave experienced players a good amount of playing time throught the RC to prove themselves, yet every match was a failure. Plus, he would have noted how each player reacted to mistakes and each loss. Unfortunately, with Aussie Rugby especially, there were a lot of seemingly automatic selections no matter how the player performed (Hooper). (Even Kiwis can relate to this frustration seeing underperformibf players selected again and again). So why not start fresh with players with little to no test experience to install a winning culture.
However, this is a problem: including players like Vunivalu and Donaldson. Im all for picking deserving inform younger players who have no test experience, but these particular players are duds.
    Obviously Eddie sees something...
As a mystery squad that other teams have little to no game film on, anything can happen!

Its just madness to bring in a third scrum half with no test experience, this is not the Spring tour! Now is no the time to build depth for the Lions tour Eddie. Just crazy not to have an experienced back up fly half with experience who can handle the pressure clutch kicks, like Quade or Ice man Foley who played his first test in 4 years against NZ last year, did not do anything wrong, got most of the points until the end the stupid French referee gave a penalty , the first of its kind in a test rugby to allow NZ win the game.
