Cesar Santos is one of the few truly great living representational painters. I am very proud that he studied with us at the Angel Academy of Art, Florence. Bravo, Cesar!!
Mr. Angel, I was in Italy not long ago but I was not aware of your Academy! I plan on returning soon. What has to be done to insure permission to visit with your or just view the facility when I return? If possible, I would be humbled by a response! Thanking you in advance! Jimi
Mr. Sutton: just e-mail the academy (info.angel@angelartschool.com) and make an appointment (the office opens again on Sept. 25th). One of our instructors will then give you a tour. Buon viaggio!! MJA
I live in Tunisia which is very close to Italy but I don't have the money to study art in this fantastic academy. I hope that one day I'll be able to join you.
Finally after watching hundreds of videos on portrait painting comes this one that is edited and clearly explained in a few words but gives All the information one needs, thank you.
Discovered you through Streamline and purchased your new figure painting video.....as a retired art gallery owner and recently learning to paint I am in awe of your skills and presentation especially enjoying your energy. Look forward to painting along with you and following your blog!!!
You are awesome... Your way of teaching is a source of inspiration for learning artists like me... It really helps those who never got a chance to attend an art school
I like how you added the video of the cathedral before and after the lesson because the lesson is about building and constructing a painting similar to the architecture of a building. Great lesson and video!
Hello Mr. Santos, I Just purchased your VIDEO! Just wish I had know of you years ago. Your are a complete TEACHER; you leave nothing to question!! I have attempted to paint many years but I Learned more in 3 hours than I did in 10 years or more. I was in Venice not long ago and will return soon and plan to visit the Angel Academy! That is the best art investment that one can make because You Leave nothing to chance in the video! I will keep up with you and would love to meet you and or be instructed by you!l You are a living legend and Worth every dime of your price! LOL Jimi
Literally subscribed to your channel today and I'm over the moon. Could you please please PLEASE do a video explaining hues and values as though to a five year old.
Cesar! you're amazing. thank you so much for all this vlogs and all words about your perception in paintings. you have a brilliant work. I hope to know you someday personally, improving my experience in paintings and get this good vibe! haha big hugs from Brasil
I have been in Florence a month ago! I love the city and I would like to go study art there if I can next year or in the future. Btw I always love your vlogs, they are essential and very informative!
Hi Cesar, I just found your vlogs, man I love this one. I'm on my artistic journey and find your teaching style and art quite inspirational. Keep up the great work!
Hey, Cesar! Thank you for posting these videos. You are a "Rembrandt" of the modern age, just like Vladimir Volegov. :) I would love to see you paint an animal, like a fox or a tiger. These days Im trying really hard to paint a fox, and my first atempt was frustrating. I started to get too engaged in the details too early on, and the whole prosess became confusing and rather stressfull. How would you approach such a difficult task? Love your work, man!!! Eleo (Norway)
@ Cesar Santos Bro, your work is beautiful, and if you saw what I could do right now, you would know it wont take too many years for me to catch up to you in terms of talent aka the illustrative illusion of reality. However I don't pretend to hold a candle to your talent at the moment. But I have been perplexed in my mission as an artist and I hope to challenge you with this question. What do you have to say to those who posit the composition question? You know, the ever-present decorative corollary to representation? How do we elevate our selves to the level of the "Historical" paintings of Caravaggio, Raphael and Titian? Where symbolism, Color and Illustration are balance into a symphony of paint (or other medium in terms of Michelangelo's Pietà or The Rape of Proserpina by Gian Lorenzo Bernini)? How does one marry the insight of the classical realist with the insight of the Post & Abstract expressionist? Where is the line between artistic liberty or abstraction and faithfulness to the forms in the platonic ideal? I don't know if you have the answer, and I certainly don't have it ether. But if you look at the The Conversion of Saint Paul by Karel Dujardin or the work of Jean-Honore Fragonard you would know exactly what I mean.
Hi, thanks for the thought. What is missing is culture. Art is the fruit of a certain cultural tree. Some artists point at fruits of the past to hang them in our present tree that grew from a different soil. If we want those good fruits we gotta start nourishing ours from within.
Querido Cesar Santos, mi nombre es Marcelino, y nos gustaría a los hispano parlantes, poder disfrutar de tus interesantes charlas y enseñanzas en español, nos encanta tu blog saludos desde Argentina
Hi, I'm watching your instructional DVD, and have 2 questions... 1. To tone down the colour (dead colour stage) you mixed black and white. Can I use pains gray instead? (and mix that with white?) 2. The yellow ochre pale; can we mix that using yellow ochre? And what do we addnto het the pale colour?
Sorry, one more question! And maybe you could make it a vlog? How do you tube your own paint? Isn't it messy? Do you use a bag... Hmm... Maybe like a cake decorating piping bag to fill the empty paint tube? THIS IS SOO INTERESTING!! 😂
Hi Cesar, I'm a self taught painter and I love El Greco. I tried to copy his painting of a Christ. But I was having trouble with proportions. Do you ever copy other artists and post videos of those works. Thank you!
Mr. Santos, I commented to Mr. Angel also, On the point : How does one get to VISIT THE ANGEL ACADEMY IN FLORENCE? I was there not long ago but was unaware.Your video has changed every thing about my painting approach. Thank you, again! Help with my visit, Please! Jimi
It depends of the the colors, the thickness and the medium you use. For instance, if you use Liquin and the thickness of Cesars layers I would say it can dry in maximum 2 days. If you use Linseed oil you can wait for 5, 6 days, maybe even 7 for the thick layers. There are more mediums that you can try and they will all react in different ways.

Awesome Cesar! I wonder how long this process took you from start to finish?
do you always let layers dry before applying 2nd and third layers?
Yes, all layers should be let to dry.
It depends of the the colors, the thickness and the medium you use. For instance, if you use Liquin and the thickness of Cesars layers I would say it can dry in maximum 2 days. If you use Linseed oil you can wait for 5, 6 days, maybe even 7 for the thick layers. There are more mediums that you can try and they will all react in different ways.
too good work
