Nickelback - How You Remind Me - Isolated Vocal Tracks - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
While I have heard many people make fun of Nickelback and Chad Kroeger, I personally disagree with their poking fun at the band.
Most of the criticism came after Chad's confession that he used a "formula" for songwriting success.
Let's face it! There have been lots of bands (like KISS for instance), that capitalize off of a formula for songwriting, performance and visual "signatures." And this song "How You Remind Me" is no exception.
Ironically (and we've heard this story many times over), Kroeger brought the song to the band a week before recording the album, thinking of it as a possible last-minute addition. The band finished the song in about 10 minutes and knew they had something special. (This was a contrast to most of the album's material, which was written even before their previous album, The State (2000).
This was a huge surprise hit for Nickelback's record company, Roadrunner Records, which was expecting Slipknot to provide their commercial success for 2001. Instead, it was Nickelback.
The album was released on September 11, 2001. This was the first single and most popular song, resulting in many listeners associating the song with remembrances of the tragedies of that day.
A wildly popular song that covered a range of formats, "How You Remind Me" was the most-played song of 2002 on US radio stations. It was also the most-played radio song in the US during the first decade of the 21st century, with over 1.2 million spins.
It was followed on this list by Train's "Drops of Jupiter," which was played over 1.1 million times during the 2000s.
"How You Remind Me" was only the fifth song by a Canadian group hit #1 on the US Hot 100. The previous four:
"American Woman" by The Guess Who in 1970.
"You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" by Bachman-Turner Overdrive in 1974.
"When I'm With You" by Sheriff in 1989.
"One Week" by Barenaked Ladies in 1998.
No other Canadian group had reached the top until "Rude" by Magic in 2014.
Not bad for a last-minute addition to an album if you ask me :-)

I remember Nickelback's heyday. The hate isn't their fault. It's squarely on the radio stations. The stations overplayed and overplayed and overplayed the latest release til people were SICK of hearing it. It reached a critical mass and people just started hating the band. Wasn't the music IMO. Just these stations (that have thousands of songs to choose from, btw) are mandated to play the latest releases like twice an hour and when you're working all day listening to the radio, hearing the same song 16 times, that's just torture.

I always admired the vocal production on this. They probably put more effort in the vocal effect chain than most bands put into their entire songs.
And I also can't really put my finger on what they did. I always had the impression that he layered his voice at least twice, one with distortion, one clean.
And yes, there is pitch correction, but I don't know if they do it on both tracks or only on the clean vocals. And at points it even sounds like they vocoded the raspy vocals with the clean, corrected ones. Might also be that it is just an effect that happens when you layer tracks that are so similar. On top of that they do the "normal" vocal doubling in the (pre)chorus to make it stand out.
They clearly put a looot of work in this...
Thank you for your awesome breakdowns, always fascinating stuff!

Good analysis. I’ve seen them live 4 or 5 times. Dude has a powerful voice and consistent. They bring it live….very high energy, heavy and excellent production. I imagine the “hate” comes from the fact that the progression in many of their songs is strikingly similar. And I suspect when many people say they hate Nickelback, what they probably mean is they hate how successful Nickelback is.

Thanks for this Ken! Ugh now I need to listen to my Nickelback albums again 😊! The growl in Chad’s voice, the band, the melodies, and last but definitely not least for me, their great lyrics, and yes they had/have song writing down pat, as in, they seemed to follow a pattern or template some say, some say it’s just their style of writing and how it comes out, which I can attest to that when you are a seasoned songwriter/lyricist you do end up having a certain style, flavor, cadence, to your writing. One thing I believe, which was part of what made them so successful, is the relatability in the lyrics.

I never understood the hate for Nickelback. For All the Right Reasons was one of the few albums in general I could always listen to without skipping songs. Yes, a lot of their songs had a similar sound that made them "commercial" but any singer or band who finds a "formula" that works is gonna take advantage of that, because at the end of the day they want to sell records and get played on the radio. Does that make them a sellout? No, it's being smart...finding what works and using it. If it sounds great thats even better. Chad has a distinctive voice that even if I hadn't heard the song a million times on the radio I can always instantly tell when he's singing. His voice was made for the type of music he does and he made it work successfully for him. Commercial or not, it's still better in my opinion than a lot of the crap that's overplayed on the radio now. If that makes me "uncool" for liking bands like Nickelback I don't care because good music is good music end of story. I'd rather hear songs with a good melody, voice, and sound being overplayed any day!
I'd love to hear you breakdown isolated vocals by Chris Daughtry next. He has a distinctive sound as well but he's also excellent at taking other people's songs and making them his own...he proved that on American Idol and the Masked Singer. Thanks for another great video Ken!

I completely agree, I’ve never understood the hate that gets thrown out at them. They really are a great band altogether and Chad sings very well in my opinion. I’ve seen them live, they play and sound fantastic and put on a hell of a show! 🤘

It's sad that people feel they have to defend themselves for appreciating a Nickelback song. I may not like all their music but I'll be damned if this song isn't a total banger. If I ever wrote a song this catchy I'd be a happy dude. I was actually taking a run at this song last night. Fun times.

I've noticed people dont actually hate Nickelback but were just an easy target for making fun of especially with some of the remarks Chad has made in the past towards other bands and in his lyrics.

You should do Alex Band of The Calling sometime man. Always been a huge fan personally. Which also kinda ties into NickleBack as well. Because Chad personally chose Alex Band for the song that he did with Santana. Because it wasn't as big of a hit for Chad. It then became an even bigger hit with Alex & Santana. It's called "Why Don't You & I"
