Welcome back to RBR! Today, I’m taking the new 2024 #AMG #CLE53 out for a drive here in the UK, and I have to say-I have some strong feelings about this car. Imagine getting behind the wheel of a car that, on paper, is the perfect entry-level #MercedesAMG-a sleek design, an inline 6 engine instead of a horrid 4-cylinder-but quickly realising it’s not living up to expectations. After my first 100 yards, I knew this car was going to disappoint many of you, and it all comes down to the current state of the UK car market, and a small lacking option. :(
The CLE 53: A beacon of hope?
Let’s start with the basics: the AMG CLE 53 is designed to be a crowd-pleaser for AMG fans. It has a beautiful, unique wide-body design reminiscent of AMG legends like the C63 coupe, AMG GT R, and C Black Series. And unlike other AMG models like the 43 series or even the new C63, the CLE 53 has a proper inline 6-cylinder engine-a big win for enthusiasts like us. On my first drive in Spain, it felt like a revelation, easily one of the best entry-level AMGs to date.
So what’s the problem? Well, if you’re thinking of buying this car in the UK, you’re in for some surprises that may not sit well with you.
UK Spec: Where’s the AMG Real Performance Sound?
One of the most crucial features of modern AMG cars is a little known standard option called: AMG Real Performance Sound, designed to give the interior a more emotional, engine-focused experience via a microphone in the exhaust system. However, AMG has decided not to include it in the UK launch spec, stating it could be added in the future "if there's enough demand." That’s right-for an additional £654.50, the rest of the world gets the option to hear their engine roar, while UK customers are left without.
As someone who knows AMG fans, this feels like a massive oversight. It’s like MBUK doesn’t understand their AMG customers at all. And to top it off, this is an £83,000 car. Even if you spec it with the AMG Dynamics Package Plus, which is the top dog version that can hit £90,000-you still don’t get the AMG Real Performance Sound. Not a single AMG in this level including the 43 cars lack this feature, and it’s a frustrating point for UK buyers.
Limited Choices for UK Buyers
This isn’t the only issue with buying a new AMG in the UK; it highlights a much bigger problem with how these cars are sold here. Unlike other markets where you can build your car as you like, UK buyers are limited to pre-set specs-think of it like picking an iPhone model. In most cases, you’ll have a few package options and a limited palette of colours to choose from. Don’t like the black and red interior? Tough. Want to pick your wheels? Not your choice, either.
The reason given is to "keep the costs down," but that doesn't make sense when you’re looking at an £83k car, which replaces the old E53 was around £63k, and even the C43 came in at around £50k. It’s not just the CLE either; look at the new AMG GT, starting at £180k-that’s £60k more than the previous GT S and even more than the limited-run GT R Pro from a few years back.
Is Anyone Buying New AMGs in the UK?
Something needs to change, because right now, I don’t know anyone who’s buying new AMGs in the UK-including myself. And if Mr AMG doesn’t know anyone, that’s saying something about the bigger issues at play.

It’s shocking how out of touch with the market whoever made the choice to not include the sound on the UK cars. Unless it’s some type of error like you said. For many, including me based on what you have shown here it would make me not buy the car. Loosing lots of potential customers over not including a sub 1000 pound option is really sad. Let’s hope it’s a mistake and they aren’t that out of touch. However this is the same company that thought we would buy a c63 with a 4 cylinder :(

I bought my first C63 AMG back in 2009. The salesman didn't have to do anything other than toss me the keys so I could do a cold start out on the lot. That was all I needed. I'm interested in the CLE53 but now having second thoughts.
This is a UK problem. Both in US and Canada the CLE 53 has the better exhaust sound as long as you get the AMG Driver's Package. It's the most important option on the vehicle.
This car with a V8 and the right exhaust will be epic, hopefully AMG make it happen.

Yeah I hate those black wheels with the performance package! I was even considering getting them repainted after buying a brand new one....luckily that won't be an issue now that I've found out about the exhaust note. 😁
Because they drive on the wrong side of the road. There is a lot of one time development cost and production complications coming with that for quite a low number of cars being produced. So they try to make up for that with other things

In the Czech Republic, I ordered a CLE 53 in full equipment (Manufaktura white color, nappa brown leather, forged wheels from the GT model, AMG Real Performance Sound and AMG Driving Package and AMG Premium Plus) for £66k Netto in conversion. I got quite a big discount from the dealer.
This car is trash. yeah it looks good but it shares its interior with the C-class which, if not for the infotainment, is worse quality than a Nissan Sentra. This thing drives worse than the outgoing E-Coupe - speaking from experience, and is too expensive. I disagree with the argument this car is ruined without the "amplified" exhaust note. I would personally never want the fake sound coming from my speakers. It is easy to see through and doesn't improve the experience. The speakers should play music and the exhaust should be tuned mechanically rather than digitally. Throw this whole car away and start over.
WOW. That's crazy. You're totally right. UK product management is really out of touch with their customers with the CLE53🤯. I'm hoping and praying MBUSA doesn't start to follow whatever rule book UK is following.
uk markert is pretty ridiculous. In Switzerland/Germany the CLE53 is 15grand cheaper than the e53 and it gets all the goodies

Mercedes UK need to give us all the options instead of the packages, its so frustrating and puts me off Mercedes. You can order a RHD in Ireland instead to get the proper option choices.
Also, from the front it looks like a CLA, so nobody will know it's a £80k+ car, they'll think your driving your mums Motability car

The E53 is driver friendly where the upcoming CLE 63 if equipped with a V8 will be more track focused as opposed to this driver friendly E53 car that is more suited for every day usage with reliability that a V8 engine won’t provide

Regulations removed the enthusiast focus that once was because the people coming up now are not into cars like that and they simply see them as a tool imo. I think the younger generation 2002+ are not into cars. Part if that is because the allure of a powerful engine and sound are becoming less and less in newer vehicles. This video is case in point. We will have a generation that will come up and all they will know will be EVs and sound deadening cars.

Sad that you’re “disappointed” that your neighbors will not be disturbed by a pointless loud exhaust. That the sound is a the 1st major point in a review (not the handling, steering, weight. Etc) is testament of what many enthusiasts have become : poseurs who want to pretend they are driving a race car; it’s not, it’s for the street. Signed long time, AMG owner, who buys these cars for what they do: Stealthily performance, not goof ball fake programmed-in pops and burbles. There I got that off my chest. I’m sure 90% of readers disagree. Consider obtaining a Sawzall with a metal cutting blade. That’s popular here in Los Angeles.
Dont believe the hype, this car is not beautiful if you are not specing it to the top of the range. Or rhe paint job is not grey or satin black. buying a low mileage e class coupe and spending some money on after market extras is probably better value.

Whatever happened to driving dynamics , sound is important, but would really not buy a car because it doesn’t sound good, isn’t it far more important how it drives , brake pedal feel steering feel, handling , how the car puts the power down, gear box and let’s not forget how it looks.

I lost all faith on AMG once SL received that dreadful 4cyl and C63 went 4cyl only. Not even GT63 can save their arse in my eyes.

As a previous owner I’d choose the CLA if you’re enjoying a lighter car around the corners or mountain passes. But in all other aspects the CLE will be superior.

The aftermarket shall have their hands full with the CLE, particularly the tuners and exhaust specialists. If this is what's to be expected from AMG outside of the 4.0, it shall be a sad decade from hereforth.
Also in the UK if you want AMG styling pack with the comfortable seats (massage and perfume) it is not possible. You are forced to chose the Pro Performance pack with the performance (too hard) seats. And that removes the massage and perfume.Screw you Mercedes UK!

People are aware of companies' directions on cars' efficiency and going to electric.
I was about to order CLE53 but unfortunately the cars like other big brands became more low turbu power and you can get a better engine except to pick expensive version which i am not agree putting lot a cash over a terbu 4 cylinders or 6 and for majority of customers. So i switched to buy a ford Mustange GT instead altho I am a gt cruiser over a sport guy .

In 2021 UK changed the homologation rules to new ones and not aligned to EC-EU type ones. In 2018 with the new WLTP and afterwards the RDE is causing a lot of headaches to the brands, they were forced to reduce drastically the variants on the models and equipment combination, due the complexity for the homologation standards and requirements. Since 2018 it's being noticeable how all brands reduced a lot the options and customization capabilities in their models. Also withing the EU markets you could see the same model not always the options and equipment available are the same and basically is due this and the costs and time consuming to achieve those emission homologations.
I am a bit worried seeing this video as I ordered an E53 AMG and I am wondering if leaving out the "AMG Real Performance Sound" package affects the exterior sound? In our site it seems to only mention interior sound which I don't really care but if it somehow affects the actual exhaust system then its a problem. The text could really be interpreted either way.
There was also mention on some older sources (related to other models) that the "AMG Driver's Package" has affected the car sound in some markets/locations.
Guess I will have to go ask at the dealership right away on monday as its beginning to be the last days to modify the order

It really is a shame that the official site in our country (and I would imagine other countries too) does not really have specific information on what a package actually has or what it affects.
Nothing a little tinkering with the exhaust can’t fix, I bet most AMG owners just do it regardless of how good their car sounds stock. Fingers crossed their sales gives the Merc boys a wake up call.

The regular C63 doesn't do it for me, the CLE 53 doesn't do it for me. I have such high hopes for the CLE, please AMG make a CLE 63 or 55 with a raw V8. AMG was founded upon giving the customers what they want no matter what, if they have the money. It blows my mind that this is even a problem with the packages.

I’m from the US..didn’t test drive the CLE53 we got and did not see the sticker because I already test drove 2 that had the performance sound. Found out after the fact it didn’t have it on ours smh.
My salesman said you need to have amg performance exhaust to have the amg performance sound and it’s prob not on yours…NOTE - amg Performance exhaust is supposed to be a standard option…so why isn’t it on mine? 🤷♂️
Amg performance sound is a standard option in the US when dealers order (I can confirm that when another salesman showed me their system) and is also not an option you can add on if you were to build your own online as a consumer. So why is it not on mine?
dealers are charging an extra $550 as an “upgraded option” for other cle53’s that have amg performance sound. IMO thats just something they can “discount” during the sales process when it’s already a standard option
Dealer is now silent and nothing from MBUSA regarding the issue. They’re bouncing me back and forth to each other. There’s a ticket but no answer yet. Now wondering if my cle 53 actually came with a performance exhaust as advertised as well.
Would have never got the one we got if I knew it didn’t have amg performance sound. I agree with you, the sound makes this car and if you were to upgrade the exhaust to an aftermarket one the warranty is void.
How do I get it added on mine? Is it something I would have to pay for or can MB actually do right and add it on? Really feel like it’s falsely advertised. Any help would be appreciated.
Oh btw both computer screens in mine keeps freezing while driving. Going to get it serviced again to fix it.

Ive heard BMW now use GPS to know where you are (like in a city or in the countryside) which will depend on how loud the exhaust can get... maybe this uses the same system 🤔 🤷♂️
I have a 2021 E53 coupe, thanks for RBR and couldn't have been happier. My dealership in Canada has been non stop trying to get me to trade it in and take the CLE53, thankfully I elected against it. Ended up getting a 2018 C4S as well to curb my need for a nimble vehicle
Great thanks to this video, I was intended to get this in my country and the shop I goes to import CLE 53 from UK, now I’m having 2nd thought and most likely will drop this. No sound no AMG if I cannot get the best experience out of it. Spending 450k SGD on this is not what I’m looking for
Isn't this exhaust problem because of some UK Laws/regulations?

"Since 2016 the UK adopted EU regulation 2014/540, which set an initial noise limit of 72 decibels - actually around ten times quieter than the 1978 limit, since decibels use a logarithmic scale - and this will go down to around 68 decibels by 2026, alongside revisions to the car noise test procedure to make it more [...]"
I have an order for a CLE 53 AMG, full spec with pro performance pack, etc. if this can’t be resolved then my order is pulled! What a stupid decision Mercedes UK !
