German audiences tend to be more reserved to begin with (I think because in the 80's German audiences were supposedly known for clapping out of tune all the time and now they don't want to be 'those guys' anymore) Anyway, this award show is mostly musicians, composers and producers in the audience and not fans, meaning the audience is extra 'stiff'. They want to give the artist the respect of letting them perform their thing, listening carefully and not interrupt them by clapping or anything. It has nothing to do with the performance or the artist, it's supposed to be a sign of respect. If you watch other 'Echo' performances you will see that this specific audience (no motter what year) is just generally very 'conservative'. That's it, greetings form Germany btw
