    One of my favorite guitarists ever. Such a unique style and signature sound. No one plays quite like him. Some of the best riffs in rock music come from this guy. Greatness.

    I love it how he says STANDARD for most of the trippy weirded out dissonant chords he does and then he plays it and it sounds like the world ending. FUCK YEAH TOMMY!

    I've spent a couple of years trying to figure out what Tommy does to establish a root/bass note while playing the dissonant stuff on top of it. Now he's saying it's as simple as using his thumb? Damn... :)

    I fucking love Prong. Saw them in Tulsa at the Cain's Ballroom in 1988, then again in Austin in 2018. The dissonant, heavy melody is what hooks me.

    I saw Prong open for Overkill last night in Worcester Massachusetts! They blew me away! Tommy is a KILLER front man and guitarist that drips with attitude! I'm mainly a bassist and their bassist was KILLER too! He's also a southpaw like me too which doesn't hurt! haha But seriously killer upload.

    Sounds like Dsus2: D/E/A.
    I hear the very unforgettable pleasant sound of the Dsus2 (D & E) ringing. Also the D &A have that solid root-5th siering though. This I am main reason why this chord sound so great on the record!
    Sus chords have no third: D sus4 > D/G/A.
    My 2¢.

  • @leetrent747
    @leetrent747 7 лет назад +5

    Same riff, sounds like it is tuned down to c#, just saying by ear, a lot of heavy bands tune down in later years either by wanting to change the song slightly (after they have played over and over and over) or to accommodate the vocalist.

    • @jrmarrero96
      @jrmarrero96 6 лет назад +1

      He's playing in D standard (DGCFAD) for the second reason you listed above (Tommy has been around awhile, so his voice needs to compensate). He also uses Drop C live. He's gone down as low as drop A tuning on the Scorpio Rising album and he used a seven string on one track of No Absolutes.

    • @christophervilches3935
      @christophervilches3935 6 лет назад +1

      yeah he down tunes to drop C for alot of stuff he writes

    Well, thanks to Tommy and the riff place for sharing. The website is a pay site, so no free tab for you. Anyone know what that "I don't even know what you call it" chord is? Every chord can be named (I think). I'm gonna work on a little of this with my Uberschall. Tommy could have used a better amp for this vid, probably not his fault.

    • @gregmerritt9366
      @gregmerritt9366 5 лет назад

      guiltyspark66 Just started the learning process for music theory, and, as far as I know, yes, every chord has a name(sometimes 2 or more). I'll shoot another reply with the answer for the chord in question, once I finish the video.

    Tommy's thumbed bass notes seem more natural to play, than something that's barred, mor of a percussive effect.

    It's weird to me how he plays with his thumb on the bottom string, but as Tommy says it's better for him so who am I to say anyway. Great riff, great song

    Man y'all have a gift I know nothing of. How in the world do y'all even start to know how to get the sound in your head to come out of the axe. 🤭 I thought that was funny. I'm just a middle aged kid. ✌ Hey been a fan since back in the day when y'all put out your first album. Which I know it.....blame it! I cant think of it to save my life! I know it well too! 🤔 PROVE YOU WRONG...Well I've always thought that was the debut album......Anyhow I've been a fan since it.😊

      He uses two tunings: Drop C and D standard (DGCFAD). The recording is in standard E 440.
