I started out in LE in 1979 with a similar setup. My main holster gun was a 4-inch Model 19, with a Model 49 in my left front uniform trouser pocket. I had the uniform shop double up the pocket lining to support the weight of the Bodyguard. I still have both guns. Although like everyone else I went to semi-autos for work, now that I'm retired and do not go into harm's way on purpose anymore, I'd probably be fine with my two original revolvers.

I also began my LEO career in the 80's carrying 357 and 38. I was glad we switched to 9's and then 40's. Now in retirement, nothing is easier to conceal than a J frame . I normally carry a 9 now but I have a couple of 2inch 38's in reserve.
Even with LEOSA/HR 218, it's a lot easier when traveling through NJ/NY with a revolver. Don't have to worry about magazine limitations or hollow point restrictions.

Back in the day, in your class I demo'd all 6 shots at 100+ yard steel out of my DAO 2" mod. 10 with regular combat sights. That said, IMO the killer app is to have a snub when you're scrambling with the perp. Lots of things can go wrong with semi-auto that the revolver is immune to.

I carry a Ruger LCRx with Crimson Trace grips - CCW permit holder, FL for 20yrs. I can score consistent hits at combat distances (10yd +/-) all day long. I'm a civilian who doesn't go stupid places at stupid times. It's fine for me. I big reason I carry a snubby is it's easy and comfortable, for me at least. I would like more revolver content Paul. Thanks for an excellent video.

I agree with you in the revolvers. As a LEO I never carried one as a duty gun, but did a Backup. I was so a Firearms instructor , and our corrections officer still carried revolvers , so we had to qualify with them also. I carry revolvers still. Pocket gun , now a Purse gun for my wife a S&W340sc. In the woods I carry a S&W governor mostly for snakes in swamps of central Florida. And from time to time I will still carry a S&W 386PD, 7 shot , 357/38 that weighs 20oz’s so it’s light to carry in Florida.
I would love to see more revolver content.

Couldn't agree with you more in this area. I don't find myself in a scenario where I am potentially stalked by larger predators, but if I were I think I'd be quite comfortable with something like a Smith Wesson model 29 on my hip. Won't get into 10mm vs 44 magnum, but I can tell the malfunction clearing procedure as you know on the 29 is just "pull the trigger again".
As for a hideout/backup, I carry a Smith & Wesson Model 38 +P Bodyguard AirWeight. Bought it to replace a beautiful vintage Model 36 Chief Special I was ruining with holster wear and sweat. It now sits in the safe.
    Thanks for the video.

I live in grizzly country and occasionally find them on my property. The bruins are of such mass that no handgun is adequate for taking them down unless you make solid, well-placed hits. In such a case, projectile size and velocity are not nearly as important as is bullet construction. I only carry the heaviest hard cast flat tipped solids and FMJs I can find. All indications are the newer Xtreme Penetrators should also work well, but I have not tested them. I usually carry a Glock 10mm, but I don't delude myself into thinking I will get off a dozen or more shots into one if he charges me. I do believe if you ever find yourself in a wrestling match with a bear, a revolver will have a definite advantage over a semi auto because it is more likely to work if pressed against his hide. The problem remains however, that unless your rounds find a vital artery or organ that immediately incapacitates the beast, you are likely to be seriously mauled or worse.

I was a cop in CA for 30 years. SFPD. I agree with most of what you are saying here. You are right about the 44 mag for wilderness travel. It is a very effective handgun for predators. There are 2 problems with it however. One it is very expensive. More so than a Glock 10mm for instance. Two it is more than most shooters can effectively deliver rapid followup shots. I carry the Glock 10mm when I travel in bear country for those reasons. The 10mm with 200 g bear loads recoils much like a 357 mag IMO and it was a lot less money. And I can get in 14 followup shots with good accuracy without reloading. I remember carrying the primary revolver and the backup in the pants pocket as well. Gone are the days. I still carry a S&W 340 PD in my hoodie front pocket as a backup or hideout gun. A G45 is my main gun. Thanks for a good video.

Carry two speed loaders and a couple of Bianchi speed strips. Yeah I have semi autos, but in my state civilians , who are the first in fight against violent criminals are mag limited to 10 rounds. That being said, I can put more accurate rounds on target with a wheel gun, than most can with a semiauto. Reading the paper , I see a lot of reports of gunfights between police and criminals, with a lot of rounds fired and not a lot of serious hits. One reason is older officers and civilians were trained with lesser capacity firearms , where accuracy was more important than the number of rounds in the air. Better to end the fight with the first two of six than the last two of 15

If I have good marksmanship whether autoloader or revolver then capacity does not matter as much since in most real world shooting cases only two to three rounds on average are fired to stop a threat. I am responsible for every round that leaves my gun as a lawyer is attached to every bullet. Yes I need as many rounds as I need to stop a threat but if I can't get it done with six shots and two reloads totaling 18 rounds then capacity is not the problem.

If you carry an 18 shot semiauto, but you train to shoot 3 shots per target regardless of circumstances, then you're carrying a 6-shooter ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Enjoyed the video, I seem to shoot revolvers better , than semiautomatics

Revolvers are most definitely still a reliable option, especially in non 2nd amendment states. Where your freedoms are restricted to the slavery governments.

A 44 magnum is stronger than a 10 mm but ballistically there's really not much difference. That said, I'll take 15 rounds on tap of 10 mm over 6 rounds of 44.

You may only get one shot on a charging bear with the 44....may be able to get 3 off with the 10mm

With that logic why not just carry a 9mm? There's far more difference between a .44 mag and a 10mm than between 9mm and 10mm .

I ended up selling all my polymer for debt reasons, but snagged a Ruger Sp101 3” for cheap. Ordered a simply rugged holster. Absolutely love it, sometimes I have a loose holster I place the 101 in, and put that in a fanny pack or sling bag. Also have a ruger lcr. Hate the trigger of the lcr, but after watching this video, I will start carrying it for backup. Maybe I will get an ankle holster.
Ideally I would like to get
    GP100, 6x 357 with a 4” barrel. Mostly a bag or truck gun
Sp101 3” Wiley Clapp edition as it comes worked on and with better sights
Sell off the lcr to get a chiefs special as long as the S&W has a better trigger
I have been scouring the internet for forums for old timer training tips and tricks. The information is limited and you almost have to “in” to get to what you’re looking for. Would love it if you could post how you carried, what drills you did, combat reloads (reload 2-3 then bring your firearm up, vs try to load all 5/6 and the risks associated with each… especially after what happened at Miami Dade shootout 1986)
We would love more history. I do think the revolver is still a working man and woman’s gun. It’s still practical… personally I’d rather the majority of people packing wheel guns over only a few poor trained carrying 30-60 rounds. How do you train for accuracy with revolvers? Snap caps? (empty cartridges, drill out the primer slightly, heat up wax in a tray, set the cartridge rim in the warm wax, once it sets, set in a new primer, then when you fire you get the “pop”, the wax flies out to hit the pie pan, and you can see how accurate you are at a much lower cost)…
Bring out the good old school stuff, what do you know? Bring in an old mentor who loves wheel guns, do a duo episode talking specifically wheel guns and tactics. Bring old gear, books, resources, we’d love it!

If you are truly competent with that first shot... you will be OK. A hard hit bad guy doesn't fight well.

How is a revolver not a pistol?

    • @suareztactics

Ah.....yes it is Nostra. Look it up. A handgun is in fact a pistol. There are matchlock pistols, flintlock pistols, revolving pistols of cap and ball, revolving pistols of single and double action, and semi automatic pistols of single and double action. The word comes from the Italian. A town named Pistoia, where it is said Pietro Beretta built the very first handgun.
