  • In this video, I take you through my steps on how I create long exposure images. I discuss what you need to create long exposure images and the set up before you take that first image. Long exposures are a great way to add drama and a surreal look to your landscape photography.

    Awww he is a beaut. I have got a whippet too. Her name is Sheena and she is 7. She is amazing dog and she a little diva. Won't go out when it's wet and my kids cover her with a blanket and put a pillow under her head and that's how she sleeps all night.
    On to the video. Really enjoyed it and learned a lot. I've just started getting into landscape photography proper and currently doing a 4 part series for my youtube of when we went to Scotland, so Edinburgh, Edinburgh zoo, Loch Ness and Glenfinnan viaduct with Harry potter train and Ben nevis national park .

    Thank you! I have just used my phone to photograph for many years, and have just bouhgt a camera. One plus with a "real" camera is to be able to do some long exposure, and this was really good information!

    Great Video and very informative. I too love the effects of a 10 stop ND. I noticed you had to spell the word “walk”. We do exactly the same around my poodles. As soon as they hear Walk, it’s a commitment to get the leash. 😂.
    Great job. Love your work on IG and I’m excited go follow your YT channel.

    I quite enjoyed this Sarah, and I've done a little long exposure photography, as I have a variable density screw on ND filter. After seeing your video, I'll definitely get out and use it again, although I know to get quality images, it does take 'time' in using these devices over and over to get confidence in their usage. Yes, I've been getting out daily, especially this last week, locally...mainly going to parks and such, albeit I did just get back from a month of different area's of B.C. and got some images, but we where with family, so nothing too phenomenal. I would consider myself a landscape enthusiast, as that is where I find the most enjoyment in this hobby, and I use a Nikon full frame camera, a good assortment of lenses, and a 16-35mm, which looked to be on your camera in the video at one time at least. I do enjoy capturing birds as well, so I can go right up to 600mm, but usually find myself in the 28-300mm range most of the time. When looking at this video, one of my first questions to myself was what, or whether you use a specific hyperlocal distance, when focusing? I've rarely used manual focus, trusting my camera, which does a pretty good job of getting it right, but I'll watch more of your video's and perhaps get a feel for how and when you use manual focusing. I agree, from F8 to F16 is where the images seem the most crisp and clear. Thanks for passing on your knowledge, as it most certainly will be helpful in the months to come!

    Saw your post of IG and went to your video. First time watching you and Liked your young spunk and teaching style. I am able to go out and walk around in the woods and drive to the lake and rivers near us because there is nobody around in the area we live in Southern Oregon. I have been doing more macro set ups in the house to entertain myself through this isolation. BUT, mostly we are staying home and have a huge gardens to tend to at this time of the year. I love flowers! Keep the videos coming and I wondered if you didn't like that part of the rock because it looked like a skull.... two eyes/nose... just kidding! Thanks for the video!

    Great video. I shoot only with my iPhone since I haven’t made the investment of a “real” camera. I will look into trying an ND filter with my iPhone. I live in Salmon Arm so I have lots of isolated places to shoot! I need to book some sessions with you.

    I have one question - I'm curious with the wild flower shot(s) as to how you managed to keep the flowers sharp during such long exposures.

    Hi Sarah, nice video. I'm happy to live 300m from a woodland trail going up a hill to a new clearcut area with nice views. Need to explore more up there and find some composition. Other than walking from my front porch, and maybe going a very short drive to my local lake, we stay put!

    Thanks for yet another video.... easy and informative, Your doing great both of You. I see I need to buy an ND filter soon. Love the result on the sky, and also hopefully the water on the beach too.
    As You asked, I'm from Norway, and we can go out, But with some restriction... minimum 2 meters between people we meet, and max 5 persons together. Then the usually washing of hands, and touching as little as possible. No visiting other people, and relatives. All school are closed, they are talking about reopening them again after Easter, I hope not. The worst part is all the people who normally go to their cabin in the woods and mountains. That's not allowed for those who's cabin is in another district. A lot of anger and debate about this.
    I have been out on some short hikes in my nearby area, but need to find new places to go to. To much locally people out running and walking, so kind a stressful time. Only time alone is at sunrize, that's too early for normal beings I guess. Still doing my regular job with Pon Equipment (Caterpillar dealer), so far normal work flow. Started on my Easter holiday last Friday, some day of and hopefully some images to edit. My best wishes for all Your folks for the upcoming days, and hopefully You al stay safe and sound!

      Thanks Jhonny! Sounds very similar to Canada with the rules and I understand about the cabins. We have that same problem here! Have a wonderful Easter :)

    Hi great video. How do you compensate for light difference. Do you expose for the foreground or sky?. I haven't tried this yet but but if I take a sunrise or sunsut shot I have to take multiply exposures to get everything exposed properly. Do you do the same here or is one exposure enough?. Thanks

      Me too. I purchased the Wine Country Camera 150 mm set -up with a 2 stop hard & soft gnd, 3, 6 &, 10 nd filterrs. Expensive & big. Purchase the 14-24 when I purchased my camera. If I new back then I would of purchased some Nikon wide primes with filter threads or the 16-35 f4. Oh well, live & learn.

    • @bc9409
      @bc9409 4 года назад

      @@thomastuorto9929 , I seem to like to shoot too fast and am all over the place. These big bulky filters and having to think what I'm doing first really slows me down. Which is probably a good thing....I guess the more time and trouble you take to get an effect like long exposure in an image, the more it sets you apart from the rest of the pack though! If it was easy, everyone would be doing it!

    • @thomastuorto9929
      @thomastuorto9929 4 года назад

      B C I seem to shoot at some of the same places while near home. This gives me the chance to work the scene & even think about it when I’m not on site. This really helps with composition & such. Pre-planning & getting to your destination early is big for quality shoots as is being there before the sun comes up/goes down is.

    Hi Sarah! Thank you for this video. Its very informative. I'm a beginner in photography. I just received my K&F variable ND filter. For the past few days I've been trying to figure how long exposure works...trial and error. What ND app you use? Lastly where are you in Canada? I'm in Toronto. Sorry I am a year late on putting comments. Hope your channel is still active. I just subscribe :)

    Not sure I understood the shutter speed you put into your calculator. Is it the shutter speed "before" you installed the ND filter or after? Also what app are you using for the exposure settings? Thank you!
