Here in America we call a variable ND filter a circular filter with a pair of polarizes that vary density as they are turned. The filter that is darker at one end and gradually lightens we call an ND grad. You have inspired me to try some beach shots with my vari nd. I used to use it to give me f/1.4 with a lit subject but slow enough shutter speed to blur the moving water. Had to work on tripod and put my subject in place and focus without the filter on my d700. With the nikon d850, the filter cranked to is stops and I can barely see out the viewfinder and spot focusing snaps to focus!

Thankyou Austen, haven't done much long exposure for years, think you have convinced me to dig out my filters again............

Dear Graham I am really glad. Long exposure is fantastic and unpredictable aspect of photography.
