    * UPDATE 02 * (February 2024) - Since updating to ChromeOS build v121 it seems the Acer 311 with the MT8183 processor as I have here is now running 64 bit ChromeOS rather than the original 32 bit ChromeOS it was running. Possible this was also related to an Android update.
    * UPDATE 01 * (September 2023) - Since publishing this video, Google have increased the AUE date (the date up to which the Chromebook receives ChromeOS feature and security updates) to June 2030. AUE date video: ruclips.net/video/KdeqbCqAfi4/видео.html
How does the Acer Spin 311 compare to the competition of the Lenovo Flex 3i Chromebook (5th Gen.)? Video comparison: ruclips.net/video/KjO-VlKmFlI/видео.html I'd also suggest you check the video on the 6th Gen. Flex 3i with the Celeron N4500 processor - ruclips.net/video/98T4ULPKK4k/видео.html or the even newer 8th gen with the Intel N100 or N200 processor: ruclips.net/video/nc6RMm7Z9JQ/видео.html

I just got a used unit. Much to my surprise it works quite well in late 2022. Yes, it is a low end product. I was able to run a RUclips video while playing a browser version of Doom (with three other browser tabs open) but it did stutter at times (hardly surprising!). The 32 GB of memory is a bit limiting, as is the 3 gb of RAM. And the unit I got only has one USB-A and one USB-C slot. But for all that, I was quite impressed. The key board and track pad are nice, the touch screen is sensitive enough (but not TOO sensitive). It runs for an entire day. It was able to run every Android App, PWA, and Web site that I threw at it (but I am not a gamer. Doom was the only game that I really tried out much). This Chromebook’s specs are nothing special, but it just works. The small size is an asset for students, and my college student daughter assures me that it will run everything a freshman college student is likely to need. So I am giving this away to a young lady who is starting college next year, feeling certain that it will get her through at least a couple of years of school.
The AUE is 2028, so it could theoretically get her through grad school!

Glad they've been of use, thanks for letting me know. The non Spin version looks decent enough, same MT8183 processor so same long support life. You might want to compare that to the HP 11a - ruclips.net/video/xmD9z9NYY-8/видео.html which also has the same MediaTek processor. If you're in the UK I know that one is available for £149 in Currys / PC World, worth checking in other regions too as it's usually priced to be competitive.

  • @cnhhnc

Have the same model. Also my go to. Very peppy with that Mediatek CPU--seems almost as fast as my main laptop with twice the RAM and a Ryzen 5 5500U CPU. The typing is good. The trackpad fine. The screen is good but I would like it to be just a little brighter. Would've been nice if there were a micro SD card slot for more storage. And, ideally, I'd love for it to utilize more of that screen space. This size is ideal for a 13" FHD instead of a 11.6" HD. But, that would not have been COST effective. Would have priced it much higher.
That said, at less than $200 regularly it is very hard to beat this. One other thing. I DID have a battery FAILURE with this. I suppose all the supply chain problems may have led to weaker quality control. Fortunately ACER did me a solid and replaced the battery with a new one. Been good ever since. I'm in the U.S., of course.

Hi, thanks for checking the video. What are you concerned about filling your Chromebook storage up with? It's intended you use most of your files from the cloud, like Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive. With reagrds to the Android apps I think you'll find you won't use it like your phone with loads of apps, as you'll mainly want to take advantage of the full browser experience. If you do want storage for say offline media I quite like this solution - ruclips.net/user/shorts60Ngcm87ju4 You can also use something like this to attached an SD card/peripherals externally - ruclips.net/video/7ZrHTIQZ4CI/видео.html There are also other models of this Spin 311 with SD card slots and more storage (64GB) on board, but I think it's only in the Intel based version with the older N4000 processor. If you want to compare it so similar 2-in-1 11.6 inch Chromebooks that do have an SD card slot and options of 64GB on board, check out the generation 5 and generation 6 Lenovo Flex 3 Chromebook - ruclips.net/video/thiDJ_cNnQU/видео.html

      @MergeDroid  2 года назад +1

Hi Richard, thanks for checking the channel and the video out. The CP311-2HN model allows stylus compatibility, if that's not important to you I wouldn't go for it. The N4000 Celeron processor is starting to get a bit old now, I'd look for something the at least the N4020 to compare such as the 5th gen. 11.6" Lenovo Flex 3, you can see how that compares to the Acer Spin 311 with the MT8183 here - ruclips.net/video/KjO-VlKmFlI/видео.html That will give you some of the extra ports too if that's an important factor. If you do like the look of that also consider the newer 6th gen. with the N4500 processor, I picked one up recently - ruclips.net/video/98T4ULPKK4k/видео.html That said remember you can also add a dock/hub to your Chromebook for extra connectivity - ruclips.net/video/7ZrHTIQZ4CI/видео.html I hope some of this helps, I'd say any of those mentioned and the Acer in this video are all great Chromebook options, just depends on your preference.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience via your reviews. Discovered your channel last night...very helpful. Was wondering what your experience with your Acer 311 is with these situations:
    1. video conferencing meetings -- camera, microphone and speakers ok?
    2. using a TV as secondary display (my expiring Chromebook has an HDMI port and has work great...am new to USB-C)
Was wondering your opinion on which of these Acer 311 options is better? (Am in Canada)
    A) Acer CB311 CB311-11H-K7SF 11.6" Chromebook with Mediatek MTK 8183, 4GB DDR4, 32GB eMMC (this looks like yours)
    B ) Acer Chromebook Spin 311 CP311-2H-C04Y 11.6" Intel N4100 / 4GB RAM / 32GB Flash Memory Storage / Intel UHD Graphics 600 / Chrome OS Laptop
Due to price matching, can get both for $180CAD. There's a difference in the auto update expiry. Option A is June 2028 vs June 2027 for Option B. Am wondering if the CPU + RAM + graphics card would be noticably better/reliable? My computing needs are basic -- mostly office documents, watching videos/movies online.

Hi Steve, thanks - glad the channel is proving useful. For your queries...
1.) Webcam and audio are OK, but nothing special. What video conferencing software do you mainly use?
2.) A USB C to HDMI adaptor will do the trick for display out no problem. If you want something with even more ports, including pass through power, some ideas/information in this video - ruclips.net/video/7ZrHTIQZ4CI/видео.html
A vs B - Either of those processor options are fairly similar, but personally I'd probably recommend the MediaTek based Acer Spin as generally find better Android compatibility and you have the year extra on the update life.
If it's available, you might want to compare against the new Lenovo Flex 3 with the N4500 or N6000 processor. Newer processors, updates to Chrome OS to June 2029 and an HDMI port on board - ruclips.net/video/98T4ULPKK4k/видео.html A little extra weight compared to the Spin 311. I might do more in-depth comparison video sometime.
My Amazon affiliate links should direct you to your local Amazon site including in Canada, so hopefully useful if you decide to make a purchase, even if you have to search once there for a slightly different model. I really appreciate your support.

@@MergeDroid Thanks for your response here and additional tips (via the linked videos). The available options of Chromebooks in Canada right now is odd...the machines you reviewed are either not available or at surprisingly high prices. That said, the info you shared pointed me in the right direction. I landed on the Acer Spin 511...which seems to be a "military grade" version of the 311.
The AUE date is June 2027...an ok sacrifice for a price matching deal + $25 credit for recycling the expired Chromebook = $145 + taxes. Thanks for the video that included the USB-C to HDMI adaptor...I got one of those.
