Bought my first Acer Chromebook 13 about 4 years ago for appx. $250. Just got a replacement (same model, CB5-311) for $180.
Always 10+ hours of battery life, I keep open a dozen tabs or more no problem and love the interconnectivity and freedom of having my settings on any other device running Chrome. Not bad for $500 over 5 years.

I shot 2 hours of GoPro video that I condensed to 7 minutes. How did I edit the footage you ask? 100% on my Google Pixel 2XL, all Android apps. Video turned out pretty great IMO. I'm no professional, but it suited me. I could imagine how much easier it would be for me to use the Chromebook vs my phone.

I bought a used HP Chromebook 11 G6 to just play MP4 videos from a USB flash thumb drive off line. I have a modem connection to my desktop but was not planning to run the chromebook on line.
When I power this devise up, I get the "get started message" and a list of nearby channels. Its been years since I set up my wired connection to this modem and am having issues with the password.
Is there any way that I can just get to a desktop with this chromebook off line so I can see, open and play from the USB thumb drive I have plugged into it? Any help appreciated.

Hey! Thanks for making this video. What do you think about the potential of Chromebook + Cloud Computing? By cloud computing, I mean the virtual CPUs, GPUs, and other services offered by Google, AWS ect. What I mean by this question is that Chromebook, with low specs, can rely on fast internet connection and cloud computing to complete heavy-duty computing works, such as video editing, game streaming. So that people don't have to invest on most advanced hardware specs on their PCs, which would be outdated in 2 or 3 years. Does it make sense? How feasible of this looks to you? Thanks!

RUclips used to have an online video editing tools for simple video editing, cut video, add simple basic text, add audio, all these basic tasks works pretty well for basic editing, nothing fancy, but RUclips decided to completely discontinued and remove that video editor.
I have no idea what they were thinking, not everyone need advance video editing, a simple and basic online video editor works great for Chromebook users, those who want to produce a professional video will use Windows or Mac.
this video i am watching right now, doesn't even use any special effect or professional video editing, a basic & simple video editor to cut or trim the video will do, you get my point here, not everyone need to edit their youtube video just like this video

99% of the time I needed a laptop just for fun stuff like social media, reading, RUclips and Netflix, and I always had a PC or a Laptop, but because it was such a waste of time to get windows updated every day for more than an hour I decided to get a chromebook I saw at a poundshop for like 40 dlls, worst case scenario I was just wasting 40 bucks, but after 3 years it still works great and I don't have to worry about the battery life or the annoying daily updates.

I work in IT - administering large networks and working with cloud technologies. I need to script (python), manage containers, and interact with my teams across all projects. I also need to be able to have remote access through a VPN to my servers and other systems for monitoring and management, and have the ability to update my ticket system and interact with technicians for the purposes of escalation and management etc. I am also a student -- studying an arts degree with a university here in the UK. That means my laptop must be able to get me through my assignments and dissertation projects, tutorials (through Blackboard) and interaction with my fellow students using voice and video. Why couldn't a Chromebook be used as a front-end access/control to a Windows Based computer? One could connect (via USB-C connection) a very fast, high-performance windows computer that would act as a Windows software co-processor to a Chromebook thus achieving access and performance features of a Windows or Mac Computer. The Chromebook would only need to be a controller of the Windows computer attached to a large 4K Display for output. I think this will work with the right software. I also believe that Google, Apple, and Microsoft are working on Cloud-Based graphics and video compute processing that could be utilized by every Chromebook leaving high-end processing (Graphics, Video, Database, and AI...) in the Cloud.

Also it depends where you live and how good the internet architecture is, if you basically never use cloud based services for your work, a chromebook might be quite unusual.
Also, it is not a good primary PC for people who want gaming devices.
"not good for anything" is just wrong. just maybe not good for what you wanted to do or your experience/knowledge on how to get some things running (since linux reduces a lot of limiting factors of chrome OS)

Apparently you can easily add photo editing apps to a Chromebook. It works fine if you have a chromebook that is a bit more expensive. Remember they run all way up to >$1000

I personally don't understand why anyone would get a Chromebook that's so expensive when you can easily get a traditional laptop at that price that out performs it. I spent less than $90 on my 11" Lenovo Chromebook just to have something for basic tasks at work. For everything else, I use my Ryzen 9, 16GB, RTX 3060 Asus Zephyrus G14 that was around $1,300.

I love my CB but would love to have a higher end CB for the future (i5/7 8gigs Ram.) I can't find the latest and greatest, higher end lenovo and Asus CB here at affordable prices. Chromebook also has a shelf life of 6 years after introduction of each model. Not from date of purchase. After which Google will no longer support it. You can actually buy a new Chromebook that is close to being obsolete already.

    • @joelian9749
      @joelian9749 11 месяцев назад

You can still use the Chromebook after Google no longer supports it, just like tablets and cellphones. But it is safer to have the latest Chrome OS. Some apps might not run if the Chrome OS is not the latest version. Usually, you can tell if the Chromebook on sale is outdated based on the spec sheets. On Amazon, you can actually find out how long that product has been on sale. Avoid those been selling for a few years because of the OS support issue.

Hey there. Great video on the Crome book. I am a book writer which I need a basic app-based machine for making kindle books for Amazon. I realize I cannot do hard-core editing but my iPad does that with Apple. Can I take a memory card such as an SDHC 128 GB or less, and use that to play media from camera and lets say, a voice recorder? Also, in my documents I create for kindle books, can I add photos from other apps or memory cards especially from my camera? I am planning on getting a basic model possibly tomorrow, of the Crome book, and need to know as many specks before I make the purchase. I also will be using something called Crome Vox, the text to speech application for the blind as I do have low vision and have trouble reading certain texts.
In google slides, can I add personal videos and audio to my slides? I may be making a presentation from time to time for book writing workshops in the future when Covid lifts to the point we can feel safe for travel and have more events at local libraries.
I know I’ve said a lot, but I need to know before purchasing. Thanks a lot for your great videos. Keep them coming.

I wish I can help someone to get used to this. There is a lot of trackpad shortcuts I've found particularly useful to counter this downside.
For exemple, move your cursor onto the shelf with the trackpad and move two fingers on the trackpad, (left or right if your shelf is on the bottom) to move through your shelf. Easy to select a pined app when you're shelf start to get quite extended. Also, touchscreen is here and you've payed for it so make the most of it.
These laptops can have a great versatility ( tablet mod, USI Pen, ok battery life, numbpad, etc.) But I think there is two things to bear in mind.
      - all the chromebooks aren't has versatile and it is subjective. Example: I'm lefty and the one I've ordered will come with a left offset trackpad. Very confortable for me but certainly not has much for a righty.
      - these laptops are based on linux even if it's chromeOS. Linux require some tidiness for the management of files and programs. (Even more true if you run linux containers on chromebooks) Sometimes it's good to be minimalist and make the most of one app or to be limited, order start from chaos.
A bonus one is to not use Microsoft Office on these device. For my degree internship report, this suite was really limited and I've found way better alternatives for free.

Best bit about Chromebooks is the security. Every job is in a separate sandbox unlike PCs. Best tip I had was to close down every time. Don't just close the lid as you would on Windows PC cos it takes so long to close and open. Chromebooks close and open in a few seconds and every time you open it checks for bugs and upgrades in the background.
Last thing is the ease of use having a keyboard, pad and touchscreen on the same machine.
