At almost 70 years old I thought I was done doing my own mechanical work but when I was quoted $190 to replace the oil pressure switch on my 04 Silverado. I decided to do it myself. I had to buy a deep socket and wobbly but still saved $130 and it took me about 30 minutes. So a big thank you to you David Jones

Question. My truck's oil pressure is All way to 80. Is it bad if I drive it like that? Or has to be fixed immediately?

@@DavidGarcia-re9qh Mine is doing the same...just follow this guys SIMPLE... fix. really, you can do it IF you have a little savvy and the correct socket, $12 + $27 and up depending on which one you buy...(amazon or ebay ) btw I have done this maybe 6-7 times on other peoples trucks now I get to do it to a truck I just bought. 2006 yukon xl. tip. screw new one in by hand a few turns.you DONT want o crossthread...... these thing go bad often. the next time will be so much easier.

I didn't find the need to remove anything except the intake/engine cover. I was able to access the sensor directly with an extension and the short Gearwrench 1-1/16 sensor socket. No universals or wobbles required. Definitely did not need to disconnect the fuel line. Piece of cake.
The hardest part was getting my body up there to do the job. Haha.

Fun tip: It may look like disconnecting the fuel line is kinda pointless like I thought at first, trust me, it's a 5 second procces that saves the flesh on your hand and added frustration. Good video.

Oh, and another suggestion: clean the area around the sensor with degreaser or brake parts cleaner and compressed air BEFORE the old one is removed. That way, you minimize debris from falling in the open hole when you swap the old one for the new one. After the old one is out, I wiped the mating surface clean and used a small tube shape brush to clean the threads.

Fabulous video, thanks for taking the time to make it. Took me about 3 hours to do the job. I dropped the new sensor and it ended up on top of transmission just out of reach. A telescoping camera and a neighbors mad mechanical skills got it out and installed. WHAT A PAIN!!!!!!! Turns out it wasnt sensor........ After replacing it was still at almost zero pressure and warning to shut off engine. So I looked underneath to size up how hard to drop oil pan was going to be. Son of a gun when I was there I saw my label on oil filter actually read 1-20-19....... I only saw 1-20 when I looked first time. I have a constuction business and change alot of oil and this one just missed the change last year.... Did oil change and shes back to showing 40 on the gauge and running great. I use amsoil so the oil was still pretty good looking and the filter was just full and not allowing flow.... Wish I had noticed actual date. But I have a new practice for oil filter and any filter from now on. Month and year only.....

Signed in to specifically thank you for the knowledge you shared in this vid. I successfully changed out my leaking sensor thanx to this vid. I didn't need to undo the fuel line or the other line. My hand, wrist and arm fit barely in there.
Everyone beware, that there are different widths on the threaded part. A small one and a larger one. I suggest removing the old one and taking it with you to the parts store. Also make sure the to examine the new one the parts guy gives you right then and there. It might not have thread sealant on the threads.

GREAT VIDEO SIR! I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT WHILE YOU ARE DOING THIS, YOU MIGHT WANT TO REPLACE THE VALVE LIFTER OIL FILTER THAT IS LOCATED BELOW THE OIL PRESSURE SENDING UNIT. I REPLACE MY SENDING UNIT, AND SHORTLY AFTER THAT, I WOULD STILL GET LOW PRESSURE READINGS. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND CAME ACROSS SOME GUY ON THE INTERNET THAT HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM. REPLACING THE FILTER TOOK THE PROBLEM COMPLETELY AWAY. THE BEST PART WAS THE PRICE OF THE FILTER, $6.99. MY 07 TAHOE IS THE 5.8L AND IT HAS 293,000+ MILES. THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR VIDEO.

Great video, really appreciate the information. I would like to add that for some instances (mine was an 04 silverado 5.3l) doing those steps 2 and 3 didn't see very easy, so I went ahead and went straight for the unit and was able to finally find it, and get my deep well socket on it, remove it, and then find the hole with the new one. My hand ended up banged up a little bit, but I was able to do the job and the truck is now running like a champ.
    Again, thank you!

Really want to thank you. My 2006 Silverado has needed this for 2 years. Dealer price was out of sight. Bought original GM Pressure switch on Amazom for only $31.00 and glad I bought the wrench also for about $9.99. I am not a mechanic but have more Craftsman tools then the average Sears Store. I like to do work on my own vehicles when I have the time. I know you said it would take about 30 minutes.( except Changing Oil. I rather pay Mr. Goodyear to do that for $34.95 and rotate my tires) After spening 20 minutes getting my tools together. it took me a little longer. It took me 33 minutes to complete. Thanks a Lot for the Video.

Great video! I used this video to replace my oil pressure switch on my 2005 GMC Sierra Z71. It took me 1.5 hours though... (I had to drive back to the auto part store for a fuel line tool). Some advice I can give is make sure you remove the high pressure fuel line. I had major difficulty tightening the sensor with the fuel line still connected. The fuel line made it extremely difficult to get my arm and hand inside. I didn't have to remove the intake manifold line, it wasn't in the way. I tried using a universal joint with an extension to tighten the sensor down. That method was very difficult for me and stripped the sensor a bit, so I just used a small 4" extension straight into the socket without the joint and it was fairly easy. I just had to crank the ratchet back and forth many times with the limited room. After all that it worked!! Thank you for the video David!

Thank you so much. This video has been most helpful. I did find I did not have to remove the vacuum hose
Had a gauge without any reading at all and had already replaced stepper motors in cluster as several gauge stepper motors were bad.
Used my folding mirror as well after replacing to make sure no leaks. Gauge reads normal now ;)
    Thanks David!

I just removed the intake manifold that took 15min and popped this off in 2 seconds lol. was a good chance to replace my knock sensors, harness, and all new manifold gaskets and even did the throttle body gasket as well. at 205k miles I feel like my truck needed all that.

Thanks for the video Rob. I knew that was the problem but I wasn't even sure where the darn thing was...now I know :-) I haven't changed mine yet, but that's the plan, and thanks to your video I'll be able to "Git 'er done!"

If you use: socket>short extension>wobble>short extension to the left (passenger side) of where the rubber brake booster line is (above the sensor) it’s close enough to get that sensor out and back in without too much trouble and having to disconnect any lines. You will need a 27 mm socket, which is a large, uncommon size for a lot of simple diy folks. Driver side approach is a pita. Have long arms and get up over that engine. Have a wand mirror and flashlight to inspect your installation to make sure there are no leaks.

For the love of all that is good and holy, do not, I repeat, DO NOT SKIP OVER THE STEP OF REMOVING THE FUEL LINE. It is worth the $12 to go and buy the plastic tool. I fought it and fought it until I lost, yes, lost the sensor and had to go buy another one. And while I was out I bought the tool. Man, I feel like a real maroon. A job that should have taken 10 minutes cost me 2 hours!

Great instructional video. Let me address something. If you have big hands, like yours, you have to disconnect the fuel lines. In my case long skinny hands and skinny wrist I was able to doe without disconnecting the fuel lines. With an 02 model you also have to work around the throttle cables. Also if you lay on your chest across the radiator you can reach around the back left side to help position the sensor to get the threads started with your fingers. This is physically hell on the body, but it can be done. Make sure you gets the socket down on the sensor really good before cranking on it.
I noticed yours is just about as oily at the base of the sensor as mine.

Part numbers are AC Delco D1846A or GM 12556117. Either part should be around $30. Socket is 1-1/16" or you can use a 27mm.

There is a small filter under the sender in the hole that should also be replaced and is usually included with sensor this is very dirty after 100k + miles..

Nice explanation of this job one thing that you should mention is there is no screen on the 06s down and screen on the 07s up I bought the sensor for my 04 and it came with the screen which confused me I spent 45 minutes only to discover that there isn't a screen and the screen that came with the sensor will not fit underneath the sensor!!!

I found that I could get a 3/8 socket with a 3/8 adapter into a half inch 1 1/16 deep well directly into the sensor which to me was much better than trying to use a universal which attended to bind in that tight space. if I can I'll post a picture of the setup it's really straightforward.

You can place a silicon O Ring on your universal socket instead of electrical tape and that works well on your universal sockets. Try It. You'll Like It.

Thanks for the video, but you should have mentioned that the tubular filter that sits underneath the sending unit should be replaced at the same time. They're notorious for clogging and causing low pressure through the sender.
