The Pontiac GTO is an automobile that was manufactured by American automobile manufacturer Pontiac from the 1964 to 1974 model years, and by GM's subsidiary Holden in Australia from the 2004 to 2006 model years.
The first generation of the GTO was the first muscle car produced in the 1960s and the 1970s. [1][2] the Pontiac GTO is considered by some to have started the trend with all four domestic automakers offering a variety of competing models.[3][4]
For the 1964 and 1965 model years, the GTO was an optional package on the intermediate-sized Pontiac LeMans. The 1964 GTO vehicle identification number (VIN) started with 82, while the 1965 GTO VIN started with 237. The GTO became a separate model from 1966 to 1971 (VIN 242...). It became an optional package again for the 1972 and 1973 intermediate LeMans. For 1974, the GTO optional package was offered on the compact-sized Ventura.
The GTO was selected as the Motor Trend Car of the Year in 1968.
The GTO model was revived from 2004 to 2006 model years as a captive import for Pontiac, a left-hand drive version of the Holden Monaro, itself a coupé variant of the Holden Commodore.
In early 1963, General Motors' management banned divisions from involvement in auto racing. This followed the 1957 voluntary ban on automobile racing that was instituted by the Automobile Manufacturers Association.[5] By the early 1960s, Pontiac's advertising and marketing approach was heavily based on performance. With GM's ban on factory-sponsored racing, Pontiac's managers began to emphasize street performance.
In his autobiography Glory Days, Pontiac chief marketing manager Jim Wangers, who worked for the division's contract advertising and public relations agency, states that John DeLorean, Bill Collins, and Russ Gee were responsible for the GTO's creation. It involved transforming the upcoming second-generation Pontiac Tempest (which reverted to a conventional front-engine with front transmission configuration) into a sporty car, with a larger 389 cu in (6.4 L) Pontiac V8 engine from the full-sized Pontiac Catalina and Bonneville in place of the standard 326 cu in (5.3 L) V8. By promoting the big-engine option as a special high-performance model, they could appeal to the speed-minded youth market.
The GTO disregarded GM's policy limiting the A-body intermediate line to a maximum engine displacement of 330 cu in (5.4 L). But the development team discovered a loophole in the policy which does not restrict large engines to be offered as an option.
The name, which was DeLorean's idea, was inspired by the Ferrari 250 GTO, the successful race car. It is an Italian abbreviation for Gran Turismo Omologato.
The 389 cubic inches engines received revised cylinder heads with re-cored intake passages and high rise intake manifolds, improving airflow to the engine. Rated power increased to 335 hp (250 kW) at 5,000 rpm for the base four-barrel engine; the Tri-Power engine was now rated 360 hp (270 kW) at 5,200 rpm. The 'S'-cammed Tri-Power engine had slightly less peak torque rating than the base engine 424 lb⋅ft (575 N⋅m) at 3,600 rpm as compared to 431 lb⋅ft (584 N⋅m) at 3,200 rpm. Transmission and axle ratio choices remained the same. The three-speed manual was standard, while two four-speed manual transmissions (wide or close ratio) and a two-speed automatic transmission were optional.
The restyled car had a new simulated hood scoop. A seldom seen dealer-installed option consisted of a metal underhood pan and gaskets to open the scoop, making it a cold air intake. The scoop was low enough that its effectiveness was questionable (it was unlikely to pick up anything but boundary layer air), but it allowed an enhanced engine sound. Another exterior change was the black "egg-crate" grille. - Авто/Мото
Super Weathering. I like the idea with leaves in the car.
Thank you! Cheers!
EXCELLENT! All you need is a tiny “for sale” on the front windshield to go with your story.
That would be cool!
@@hpiguy hey im working on the same model and im wondering are u supposed to glue the hood on ?
no you dont it just sits there
My wife just gave me one for Christmas. Started working on it today. I went with a black body with red interior. I saw one on Mecum Auctions with the same colors and I thought it was beautiful. As my wife, it’s the closest I’ll ever get to owning a ‘65 GTO. 😀
Well detailed parts and decals with this kit too!!
Thanks Thomas!
Like the effect those leaves make in making it look like it was sitting out. Great job.
Thank you! Cheers!
A For Sale sign in the window would be cool to add......nice build!
Thanks for the nice words!
I have waited days to see this report with peace. It was absolutely worth it.
Thanks Tom!
I'll take all these re-pops I can get - a PERFECT mix between simplicity & complexity. I've been a modeler for 50 years & no-longer want to spent 2-months on every build. Recommended from this old dude.....
Rock on David!
Nice job creating weathering and patina too!!
Pretty much captures the look of a 5 years old *California* *beach* *car's* appearance : tonnes of surface rust ( cars at the beaches here rot from the top-down ) , oxidised paint , 3 different tyres , and a sunbaked interior . *Perfect* !
Thanks for the nice words!
Great build , the addition of leaves was brilliant , I love your background stories it really brings things to life , you're a damn good story teller .
Thanks for the nice words!
A GOAT left out with the goats in the field!! YEAHHHH!!! 👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks for the nice words!
i just recently started watching you but i am so glad you started showing how you do your painting , it helps give me new ideas on how to build my models thank you
You are so welcome!
Hope you had a happy 4th great build nice touch with the leaves.
Thanks, you too!
I love these types of builds! make them look like they've been enjoyed and driven!
Thanks for the nice words!
I love the weathering techniques you used on this model. The leaves add a nice touch to the model.
Thank you very much!
Excellent. I enjoy your 'lets get on with it' approach, very refreshing.
I appreciate that!
I really liked how you made the leafs.
Thanks for the nice words!
Well sir ,another beautiful built, keep them coming please
I enjoy watching your videos
Thank you kindly!
Not long ago I was wondering where to get dried out tree leafs in model like this, well here we go haha. I enjoy learning things from other modellers, thanks and keep em coming
Glad to help!
Great job! Only thing I would do is to sand down the seams on the oil pan and transmission.
Good tip!
Your model car weathering skills, always amazes me!
Thank you very much!
Super cool I love these old junk cars
Thanks!
The story of the build and the life like quality great job as usual
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice work on what appears to be a nice kit. Love the weathering.
Cool, thanks!
Neat 65 GTO model kit luv the weathering look aswell give it more of barn find.
Thanks, will do!
Another excellent build! Thanks for sharing. Keep em coming!
More to come!
Happy 4th keep these awsome builds rollin down the line !...great builds !!!
Thanks! Will do!
The weathering is awesome 😎.
Next time maybe make 2 tires on one side flat , by melting them down .
SOO KOOOOOLLLL.
Mike Espo .
I've done that on abandoned cars, but it's hard to drive it to the street to sell with flat tires.
HAHAHAAH, I had to think for a minute, like what is he talking about .
Awesome, Mike
Great kit. I love when they include the convertible top!
I agree!
Most annual kits shared most everything in hardtop & convertible kits. It was usual for interiors of "annual" kits to have convertible "pockets molded with rear seats.
Looks Great ! thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Please don’t stop building, I could watch a new kit everyday! Keep up the awesome builds. Best channel for inspiration on YT. Thanks!
Thanks! Will do!
great build,90% of my models get weathering.i learn something new every video.happy 4th!!,
Thanks, you too!
Turned Out Beautifully Used Chris, Happy 4th b Safe n God Bless All.
Thanks, you too!
I always had a thing for GTOs because my first car was a 64 GTO in 1973. I was just getting into stock car racing and cut up real 65, 66 and a 67 GTOs make into dirt track cars.
Excellent, great review which gives great ideas!
Glad it was helpful!
Great job never stop learning when I watch your videos
Glad to hear it!
Some great detail and weathering tip in this one, great job. Love it
Thank you! Cheers!
I think that looks amazing. What a great finish. Top job. Great vid thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Cheers!
The leafs were a great touch! Never seen that before. Good job!!!
Wow! Never seen that little punch tool before! Always learning something while watching your vids.
Thanks for watching!
Nice job on the small fine details...
Glad you like it!
Dang, man - NAILED IT !
Thanks for the nice words!
Great idea with the punch man! Love the effects you did, "as always" on the car
with all of the really cool weathering. Always give me so many GREAT ideas for
my up & coming builds. Thanks again Chris, you are AWESOME for posting all of
your super-cool videos. See you in the next video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@hpiguy DUDE! Thank you as always for just being AWESOME!!!!!
Glad they put the Hurst wheels in it. I have the 64 Johnny lightning tie in kit from 2009 that has the Hurst wheels. Damn turbine wheels, shows the 90s heritage of this one,lol
Thanks for the nice words!
Another excellent build Chris love the old rusted effects great detail as always in the kits you build
Glad you like them!
Happy 4th sir! Keep pumping those builds out. Cheers
Thanks, you too!
Great build love it looks awesome love your videos thanks for making the videos
Glad you like them!
Looks 😎 as a restoration project!!... I bet this is how you might find one in the 70s before the prices went crazy!!... Keep up the great work Bud!!
Love your builds - now you have to do another one as an “after” - that’s a perfect factory chalk mark, frame off restoration!
Great idea!
Awesome work mate looks just the part, even I've learnt some ideas !
Glad to hear it! Thanks for the nice words Gary!
Very nice. Really like your weathering. Sidenote: my wife's cousin had one of these. Same make and model. He worked in a bodyshop, so his DIDN'T stay weathered. lol He fixed it up into a real beauty.
Right on!
😎 that you can build this kit in more ways than one..
Like your technique of dusting the rust pitting onto the chrome, super simple solution for such a real effect.
Glad you like it!
Your weathering techniques are the best
Glad you like them!
Excellent build Chris!! I love the leaves on the body & interior, nice detail!! Happy Independent Day to you & yours!!
Thanks! You too!
GTO came out perfect
Thanks for the nice words!
Looks Great!
Thanks!
Great job on the GTO my friend!!
Thank you! Cheers!
so much fun to watch. you changed the way I model. Less tress...everything is in the backstory
Thanks for the nice words!
I do love your 'Crusty Cars'
Thanks for the nice words!
Such a pleasure to watch.
Thanks for the nice words!
Awesome job on the build and weathering as usual Chris
Glad you like it!
Another great looking model, Chris!
Many thanks!
Sweet build have 2 mint originals they have the visors amt about destroyed by making a modified stocker still nice to have it back
I love how you make up stories for your models. When I built models as a youngster these cars were brand new and I built them factory new without a history. Probably why building models became boring for me. I am tempted to start building them again/ with a story this time! B. T. W. I’m 68.
Great barn find.
Thanks for the nice words!
Another awesome job Chris
Thanks again!
Okay already - I'll try to comment another way - Nice to see this kit restored to its original issue glory - even enhanced with superior decals & tire options! The "Modified Stocker" series included the '65 GTO, and this kit could easily have been considered as having been "Lost" - except Round 2 seem to have some mighty talented mold-masters able to do amazing restoration! '66 Buick Skylark from "Modified Stocker" graveyard would be a genuine treat to see restored, too! What else would the rest of Chris' subscribers add to the "wish list for Rond 2 consideration?" MPC '33 chevy Panel, maybe - even if molded in red with "Coke" markings! Okay, I'll try again! Nice to
Thanks for watching and commenting, I'd like to see all those kits too!
Round 2 knock this one out of the park. I will be getting this to put in my stash, 360 plus. I always enjoy watching your reviews of kits. I also want you to know your work is awesome. I can’t believe all your paint work is done by rattle can. 👍👍, have a great 4th .
Hope you enjoy it!
Great build!
Glad you think so!
My brother had a 65 tempest hard top black on black 4 speed 389 tear drop hood hooker headers molded my love for old muscle cars thanks for the memories. Keep on with the great builds. Happy 4th!
Thanks for the nice words!
Looks great
Thanks!
Another great build
Thanks again!
The leaf liter was a nice touch
Thanks for the nice words!
I must get this kit.
Another awesome build and video for a awesome holiday! American mussel on the Fourth how appropriate. What a masterpiece. Love the backstory and the leaves in the car, nice touch. Thanks again Chris and hope your and your loved ones had a great day. Almost forgot Round2 went over the top on those decals. 🇺🇸🇺🇸👍👍

Nice job
Thanks!
@@hpiguy yes sir
Caddywhompus FTW! 🤣🤣
Hahahaha!
Another nice build, like the weathered look. I have an original 65 kit built as the factory version, nice job
Cool, thanks!
It is challenging to make that rusting effect. You're a master Chris. Great built you've done. Happy July 🎉 4th.
Thanks for the nice words!
Awesome goat!
Thanks!
Another great job! I do alot of model railroading and it is easier to make things more beat up and grimy than factory fresh! Leaves were awesome! I want to build one like this. Maybe hold it over a candle to soften the plastic and put some dents in it. A trick i used before is to use rubber cement as a masker and brush it on the windshield in the path of the wipers. Let it dry then dullcote the whole thing. After that dries. Peel off the rubber cement and you have a clean streak where the wiper would have went across the windshield. Looks cool. Again another informative enjoyable video. I like your soundtrack too. Very relaxing
Thanks for the nice words!
great build
Thanks for the nice words!
@@hpiguy your welcome
Really enjoyed this one. A '65 "Goat" is one of my dream cars. $64,000 question...do you keep/display all your models? And...do you have a cool car parked in your garage?
I have an Army Green 2020 TRD Pro Tacoma in the real garage. ;)
I store most kits, display some, and give others away.
Thanks for the nice words!
You do some pretty awesome work on these models. I watched this one and compared it to the red one you did around 8 months ago. I think I like the AMT better than the MPC versions. Both look awesome by the way , I just like the detailing on the AMT better.
👍👍👍✌️✌️✌️
Glad you like them!
You do such a great job in making a beater, I hope that someday I will be brave enough to give it a try, happy 4th of July 👍
You can do it!
Very nice.
Thank you!
Good story !
Glad you liked it!
Great work brotha I'm working on a 70 Chevelle right now
Right on!
Another kit, another style, allways a good job 😉 Which is the default in those kits is maybe the tires, they could be a little flat to better make the worn side of the car
That would be cool!
They really need to fix the front bumper piece. Those headlights are all sorts of bad. Be nice to retool and make the kit modern.
Agreed! AMT/ERTL butchered those headlights badly back in the 80's. Never really understood what happened, as they clearly had access to the original tooling. Ugh. All that said, great job Chris!!
very cool video friend, greetings
Thanks for the visit!
