  • In 2012 I started creating new VFX scenes for Star Trek V. I will now gradually put these online here.
    The aim was to design the look, the camera perspectives and the movements in the style of the 80s.
    This video contains some "making of" scenes.
    Have fun watching

    Over the years there's been a lot of hate for Star Trek V, but I always enjoyed it myself. I also thought the glow behind/around the moon was a neat effect when I first saw this film, yet your model looks much more realistic as the moon doesn't have an atmosphere or emit it's own light so there really shouldn't have been a haze around it. I bought the soundtrack when it came out and read Captain's Log by Lisabeth Shatner. I can still recall the movie studio editing out images of the face of "God" who was really a devil due to international complaint, though I did see the original version in theaters. STV was always a more introspective entry, but it had good humor.

    Nice job on the new effects. I dunno if I imagined it, but the subtle detail of the sun light washing slowly over the earth below the Enterprise as Jerry Goldsmith’s music swells was such a nice touch. Really sells the reveal of the Enterprise. I also never noticed how natural and matter-of-fact the banter and interaction is in the scene where Kirk and the gang get off the shuttle. I love that. Especially seeing Scotty going off on the crew member about using the right tool for the job. The camera work for that scene though simple does so much. Just goes to show that even though Trek V was flawed, it definitely had its great little moments.

    This is my first time seeing this, and it may be an unpopular opinion, but I prefer the original sequence. The addition of the sunrise over Yosemite is a nice touch, but it doesn't match up to the shot of the ship.
    The sun is coming up behind the shuttle, from the East, meaning the shuttle is heading west, away from the sun. But the ship seems to be moving towards the planet already in full sunlight. So the shuttle was moving in the opposite direction.
    Then in that shot the shuttle should be moving away from the planet, towards the ship. Yet as it approaches, the planet is now farther away than the ship.
    The directional flow of a scene can be very important, and the new sequence breaks it.

      You are correct. Montgomery Scott was promoted to the rank of captain when he was assigned to the Excelsior. (Captain pin clearly seen in the "Stealing the Enterprise" scene in ST:3.)
      A note about sweater colors. White is a command color worn by captains and above. Buff is below captain rank. However, Scott wears buff + captain's pin in ST:3 alluding to the fact that he is onboard Excelsior for his engineering expertise rather than command. In ST:5 he is wearing a white command sweater because he was left in charge during repair, so he's assuming his command role. In ST:6, he is back in the engine room and back to buff but keeps his captain pin as seen in "The Dinner" scene.

    • @AvengerBB1
      @AvengerBB1 Год назад

      @@davidkaminski615 It had never crossed my mind that Scotty was also in the chain of command. Well, that fixes that in my head. I mean, he had been left in command of the Enterprise a few times during TOS so he was obviously command rated. Ugh.

  • @mineofilms

    1st a general question about the scene; what I never understood about the scene specifically is why is ENTERPRISE not in dry dock or space dock but rather just hanging out in stationary orbit between the Moon and Earth? I always thought that was weird.
    2nd; as bad as the effects are/were for the original Star Trek V I always thought they looked great if one wanted this movie to look like the show. I always believed during those first few years that was done on purpose. To make the effects look cheesy/throwback to a simpler time. Obviously, that assumption was wrong but as a kid it was a nice thought.
    I always thought Star Trek V was ok as its own standalone story but after years of this being the butt of most Star Trek movie jokes they should have done/gone with something else story-wise.
    I remember there was a novel out called Star Trek Probe which served as a direct sequel to Star Trek IV where the ENTERPRISE and the Romulans go after the Probe. That would have made a much more compelling Trek movie in 1989 but IDK.
    HIKE, great work as always.

  • @DavidNicholson101
    @DavidNicholson101 Месяц назад

    I don't see why ST V can't get the ToS treatment when it comes to the special effects. They don't have to go crazy like they do these days. Just update the effects so warp drive looks like warp drive instead of full impulse and turn the impulse drive red instead of white. Also have the Enterprise in orbit instead of hanging in space.

    Normally I’m opposed to people meddling with the visual effects of old films. A movie is a product of the decade in which it was made. Making updates years later alters the film and as such the original experience is lost.
    I make an exception in the case of Star Trek 5 as it was released with cheap visual effects, many of which look unfinished.

    This was the first film that really showed the characters loose and real. NOT better performances than the previous films, just more natural and I think so took offense to that. Although some dumb jokes, Scotty knocking himself out was not needed... still... a good film with some terrific themes and subjects broached.
