Lime cordial Rob. Equal parts juice, water and sugar, bring to the boil and either heat sterilize and bottle in jars or just keep it in the fridge. Great made up with soda water or just regular water, very refreshing.
Thanks Jude. Will be giving this version a shot right now.
Well, in a tick after I'm done here. 😉

You got lime coming out of your ears, Bianca and Rob LOL. btw, good to see B join you in your video, too cool. Maybe put an arch slightly on ya lime tree before popping a shade cloth over it.
Hi Mary. Have seen a load of new shoots on the old dear son have used the cloth just to wrap the main trunk and large branches at the moment. Not sure if we'll need to paint her now as I think she'll be covered in new foliage well before the sun gets too hot.
Sorry it took so long to get back to you.
I'm now thinking that Rob would look awesome with purple hair. 😁👍

Limoncello pie, and limoncello wine, Limon cheesecake. Thanks, Rob, and your lovely Lady.
So far we've made pie, cordial, cheesecake, curd & have some cleaner on the go. Oh, & may have used some juice in a few beverages as well. 🍸🍹🥂
Still have litres of the juice frozen for later use. 👍👍
Thanks mate & hope all's well with you folks there.
Hi Rob & Bianca. I see Bianca is doing the bulk of the work, running around like a marathon athlete. We are getting to the age where our joints and muscles just don't work as well as we would like - suppose it's almost time to retire and listen to the veggies and fruit growing. Hope you folks are doing well & things haven't got too chilly there.

OMG Mojito Time ;)
That's what our eldest said as well. 🤣

Rob, I know it isn't a key lime, but I love Key Lime Pie! I bet those limes would work great! Yum!
B made up some small pies from the juice & they were great. 👍 We have a load of juice in te freezer so I'd say there's more to come.
Cheers.
Lemonade and lime is lovely on a hot day. Lime cordial is always good to have around. Cheers!!
I'll be making up some cordial today as it happens Jim. 👍👍 I figure it will be one of the easiest ways to save a good deal of the juice.
Cheers mate.
Lime Marmalade is awesome!
Thanks Julie. It's on the list. 😁👍
Hi Rob and Bianca. You could make powedered lime, candied lime and candied lime peel. The lime powder can also be added to make a lime salt or lime and chilli powder mix. Sprinkle some lime and chilli powder mix on some boiled, then fried cassava. This is called muhogo in Kenya and is a street food snack. Great harvest though. I'm in the southern suburbs of Brisbane and can't wait to get my lime trees in.
Thanks for that Aiden. We ended up drying a load of them that we can powder as needed. Also have a few litres of juice left in the freezer that we're slowly working through.
Cheers & have a top one,

Lime Chello. I will have to do the same my lime tree 🎄. Thanks from Lismore.
We will be making some with the juice we saved but haven't got around to it yet SD. Was told that a gin version can be very tasty as well if you get one with spicy aromatics.

@@RobsAquaponics your videos are very guiding and helpful..........right now its freezing here in Victoria...........but will see in October onwards..............thanks again
Hey Rob, how about some diy cleaning with those leftovers? Just use a huge glas container, put all the remaining shells after squeezing in there and fill it up with vinegar (high percentage) then keep it sitting for at least 1month and filtration, you will have some cleaner for glas. (Orange and lemon would be similar possible) best smell while cleaning! If it wont work maybe a Cuba Libre should help 😅 thanks
We have some sitting in vinegar now. 😁 Have litters of juice in syorage, a lot of which will be used to flavour a few drinks. Cheers 🥂🍷🍹
Amazing
Thanks & Cheers DKF 👍😁
Ao many limes... lime marmalade, limeade, lime cordial [soda water can be added for an easy "soft drink"], lime and soy marinade [frozen into portions, ready for quick stir fries], candied lime peel, glace lime slices, lime drizzle cake... now I'm hungry...
So far we've made cordial, cheesecake, curd, a few pies & have some Lime cleaner on the go J.D.
Also dehydrated a dozen or so fruit worth in slices to use as seasoning through the year.
B is yet to make a drizzle cake yet so might have to drop a few hints for the next time we have visitors. 😉😁

Hi Rob! Hi Bianca! It was soo lovely seeing the pair of you tackle your lime tree. If only I live in Southeast Queensland I would gladly take the lot of limes off your hands. Lime water is very refreshing and alkalizing. I drink lime water exclusively, find it hard to drink naked water. 😁

look exactly like my current tree. can't wait to harvest mine and give it a hard prune. thanks for the video
Hope you get a great harvest mate.

Hi Rob, agreed with the rest of your subscribers. There is nothing better then gardening with two.
Suggestions would be preserved limes so you have that fresh lime and peel all year round till she comes back. Citrus salt is another favourite and lastly dried lime slices (pull the dehydrator out of the cupboard). Perfect for throwing into a glass of water whenever you fell like something more than water but less than homemade lime cordial,
What’s the brand of your mulcher?
Thanks again mate for the vids.
Hi Wayne. We dehydrated a dozen or so limes worth of slices to use through the year & have LOADS of lime juice in the freezer. 😁 Haven't tried the citrus salt so will give that a crack. 👍
We got a small Ozito as we don't really get many branches over 40mm in diameter. It's basically the same as the old one that we bought 2nd hand & ran into the ground with a different label slapped on it.
Cheers mate & have a top one.
Love seeing all your ups and downs in the garden and patching with the family.
I believe both you kids are sporting shiny new hair cuts. Watch out in case you look like you have a home. LOL. Great harvest by the way! The one thing that worries me about that tree is she has a split trunk. Now, I don't wanna be the apprentice telling the tradesman anything but ... you may wish to research whether you should take one branch of the fork off before it gets much thicker. A tree that splits is a dead tree.
You probably have more experience than myself Andy so is all good mate. 👍😉
It's split bark & not the branch itself by the look of it. We were going to keep it but decided the other day it will be coming off. Have a few new garden beds set up behind it & would prefer the bulk of the new growth to head towards the house. 👍
Cheers mate & all the best. 😁😁
@@RobsAquaponics I actually meant that it is Y shaped - ish. One arm of the Y needs to come off or eventually it will split right down the middle. You always take off the smaller arm to keep the integrity of the main trunk.
Hi there, I enjoy your videos very much. I have suggested use that I don't think I've seen yet in the comments. If you are a fan of G&Ts, you can make your own tonic. Recipes are all over the web, but if you want to go very simple, you can make a nice syrup with just juice, zest, sugar and cinchona bark. (If you don't drink alcohol, it also makes a very refreshing soft drink.) If you heat process the bottles it stays good on a shelf for over a year.
Have a few different Gin's we like & lime is our main mixer for them Monique. 👍 Normally it's just lime & soda but will be making some cordial to use in the drinks as well.
Cheers & have a top one.
That was a serious trim on that tree, GL with that.
Have seen it done to a number of citrus & they all bounce back so am not too worried. 👍
Worse case scenario, it dies & we get another to pop in a better spot in the patch.
Cheers.

Lime cordial which you can add to a pint of lager to make a very refreshing beverage...not sure if that is legal in Aus though lol
Lime meringue pie is really good. Juice the limes to make a cordial and use the zest to make lime soap (good for the skin apparently) sell the soap on a craft market stall...nice little earner.
🤣 Most things to do with alcohol are legal here. There'd be riots otherwise. 😉
Have never heard of adding the cordial to beer though. 🤔 Have made up a fair bit of cordial but have been using it with gin, rum & bourbon mainly at the moment.
Have some lime cleaner on the go as well, just a simple vinegar I skin version.
Cheers mate & all the best.
get some bottles of cachaca some suger and make caparinas x8 wedges of lime spoon of sugar nice amount of rum :)
I had to look cachaca up Tony. Will have a gander at the bottle shop when we pop down next time.

Salted lime in a salted water
1. Poil the lime in a hot water
2.change the cold water of the lime once a day for 3 days
3.in 4th day get the lime in the glass container and add a salted solution of cold poilded water and salt
4.add a small mount of veg oil on the top. Close it for 21 days

Sugar & salt cured lime (2 parts sugar to 1 part salt. Herbs & spices to taste. Cure halfs or quartes in mixture for 3-5 days, then sun dry or use food drier until like leather. Can be eaten as is, or use as flavouring in other foods). Kind of like preserved lime, but the air dried version.
Thanks for that Eleni. 👍 We don't have any left but will have a crack at that with the next batch.

Ceviche!
You could also dehydrate the zest and use it in seasoning blends.
We have dehydrated a number of slices to use later but no zest by itself.

Use the limes to make a lime version of lemon merang tarts.
Candied lime zest would also be a real treat. There is a historical cooking RUclips channel called Townsends tha tg did a good recipe I think.
I also love bbq making sweet corn salsa but I only use 1 lime for that.
We had some mini lime tarts last night after dinner teatowel11. 👍 B also wants to try some preserved zest so that's on the list as well.

That was amazing job you have dun there to the tree an you could make lemon an lime bitters 👍
Am making cordial today & will add LLB to the list to look up.
Cheers Mick & hope all's well with you.
Gin and Tonic 😂
Will make a change from the nightly gin & soda. 🤣
You can always juice the limes and can the juice for use later (if you run out of ideas). Be sure to sterilize the jars in boiling water for 10 minutes, as you'll only be processing the juice for 5 minutes. Then you should have about 18 months to figure out what to do with all the lime juice.
We didn't think of canning any. Most of it will be frozen I think Family Williams. 👍👍
@@RobsAquaponics Right, I forget that most people have much larger freezers than I do.
By the way, this video does the music right. It is way in the background so it is not irritating and yet it does add something while watching it. I hate these YT'ers who have just loud raucous music going all the time - impossible to think.
I figured it might make the long drawn out talky bits more entertaining for some.

Im super jealous. Im in florida and As you know used to be known for its citrus. However, we now have a disease to our citrus called greening that was introduced by a type of Asian aphid. Once the tree has it the tree is done for. Ive already lost my tree to it and the industry has been cut down to nearly 30% of what it was.
That's pretty crappy Arthur. We're lucky that we're an island nation & don't have many of the pests folks O/S get. Some are slowly making their way here due to folks not giving 2 hoots about our laws which is a shame. 😕 Most are just ignorant tourists that want to bring good from home. Cheers mate.

Lime cheesecake yum.
There has been cheesecake & pie. Cheesecake is my favourite. 👍😁
I didn't realise you could strip citrus trees bare like that pruning. Will they crop again in the next season?
Probably not til the following year. Don't prune your citrus trees like this unless you want to risk losing them
It's called a hard or skeleton prune & is normally done to older trees to give them a few more years of production by many commercial growers.
As I mentioned in the clip, the tree was getting too large & we wanted a chance to reshape it's growth patterns. We will be able to control the way it forms so won't grow back exactly the same.
If it dies I won't be sorry as it will give me the chance to replace it with a new tree growing in a better position in the patch. This one should never have been planted there as it's taking up prime growing space.
@@RobsAquaponics Commercial growers don't do this. I work on a citrus orchard, pruning at the moment actually.
Hey Rob love your work but wow was that a haircut (not your one, well hmm I'll be quiet). Below is a cool recipe for tarts . Cheers Richard N
Lime Tart
Ingredients
1 cup sugar
4 large eggs
1 cup cream
Juice of 5 limes
Zest on half a lime
Teaspoon of vanilla
Method
Mix all ingredients well.
Buy a ready made sweet shortcrust pastry shell (at less than $3, who can be bothered making it).
Pour your mixture into the shell and bake at 160 degrees C for 25 or 30 minutes.
Thanks for that Richard. 👍👍 We have loads of juice to use up so will definitely give this a bash. The fav so far are the little firm set lime curd tarts B whipped up. Very tasty with a lovely zingy punch at the end.

Can we use coco coir as an growing media...?
If yes, what are the advantages and the disadvantages of using coco coir?
I wouldn't use it in a bed as it would start to decompose. I have seen folks use it in net pots though.
3:40 - I notice you are using clippers here and I wonder if you can recommend any brand or specific type of clipper that lasts a long time or works the best. I buy those things and they work for about a week, and then they clip most of the branch or twig but do not go entirely though it. I have been using Fisker's from Home Depot USA. They cost too much to keeping buying replacements, but I cannot find any of them that will hold up.
You don't need a different brand. You need to clean after every use & retouch/sharpen the blades.
I only have cheap ones we picked up as an Aldi sale. Have lasted us a fair while now but I think it's time to touch up the blades a bit.

What kind of Mulcher and is it electric ? Video?
Its an Ozzito. Just a small one as we mainly have thin branches to mulch up here. 👍
Citrus are so dense and prickly I am at a loss every time I try to figure out how to prune them.
A light trim around the edges & thinning out the centre is normally all that's needed. 👍
So why do you prune the lime tree all the way back to the base? It seems to me that would kill the tree. Help me understand I would think you need to keep some of the branches.
My thoughts exactly! Also, pruning right before winter is a no-no. Tender new growth could freeze. Winter is when we have citrus fruiting here in Florida, USA.
It's called a hard or skeleton prune & is normally done to older trees to give them a few more years of production.
As I mentioned in the clip, the tree was getting too large & we wanted a chance to re shape it's growth patterns.

Hello sir
Jayesh from india.
I am starting pilot plant of 1000 liters fish tank and 8 sq.m. of media grow bed with swiss chard and lettuce plant aquaponics.
Do i need mechanical filter or biofilter for my system and please tell me how i can define air pump requirement for my plant's fish and sump tank requirements ?
What will be capacity of air pump i can choose for my system?
Thank you
I would use a solids separator if you can. No problem if you can't, it just means you will need to clean the muck out of the beds every few years (depending on your fish load).
No biofilter would be required if the water was running directly into the media beds in a single loop based system. I would include a bio if you have the system configured as a split flow.
This clip explains the different systems if you need a refresher,
ruclips.net/video/0QQA5BpWKec/видео.html
Air pump wise, I to have at least the volume of the fish tank worth of air being added to the tank per hour. That means a 1000L tank would need an air pump that pushed AT LEAST 1000L worth of air per hour.
Hope that helps some.

Doesn't this tree have thorns
It does have a few on the newer growth.
Not that hard
What isn't too hard?
I MUST SAY I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYONE EVER BUTCHER A TREE LIKE THAT. MY DAD PLANTED 10 ACRES OF CITRUS BEFORE HE DIED AND AFTER HIS DEATH I TENDED THE GROVE FOR MY MOM. THE ONLY CUTTING I EVER DID WAS TO TAKE DEAD WOOD OFF. I UNDERSTAND WHY YOU CUT THIS TREE BACK SO MUCH BUT I DOUBT IT WILL SURVIVE. MY PERSONAL OPINION IS THAT IF YOU DIDN'T WANT A TREE THAT WOULD GET THAT BIG, YOU SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE ENTIRE TREE OUT AND REPLANTED A DWARF TREE INSTEAD, THAT WAY YOU WOULD NEVER HAVE TO DO THAT TO A TREE AGAIN.
YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND HOW I FEEL ABOUT ALL LIVING THINGS. WE ARE STEWARDS OF ALL LIVING THINGS ON THE EARTH. IT HURTS ME WHEN I SEE SOMETHING THAT IS ALIVE BEING HURT IN ANY WAY. THAT TREE RIGHT NOW IS SCREAMING BECAUSE OF WHAT YOU HAVE DONE TO IT. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER TO JUST KILL IT. THIS IS JUST HOW I FEEL ABOUT LIFE AND I KNOW THAT NOT EVERYONE FEELS THIS WAY. THE TREE WAS YOURS TO DO AS YOU SEE FIT AND YOU HAVE DONE WHAT YOU FELT YOU NEEDED TO DO. THE PROBLEM IS THAT IF IT SURVIVES IT WILL GROW BACK INTO WHAT IT WAS BEFORE AND YOU WILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AS YOU DID NOW. BUT TAKING IT OUT AND REPLACING IT WITH A DWARF YOU WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM FOR THE FUTURE.
I hope you are also going to apologise after seeing the next harvest to come off the tree
Just cos you do it one way does not mean that’s the only way it can be done not to take away from your way or feelings mate
Hope you have a great day
Don't forget that chopping a branch off a tree isn't like chopping a person's arms off. It's more like giving a person a haircut or trimming their nails - it's a part that is disposable and will grow back. Tree branches naturally get attacked and infected in the wild, and trees will even drop their own limbs off if they need to, to ensure their survival. They maintain energy reserves in their root system so that they can regrow lost limbs as needed. This is why you see people poison tree stumps after they have chopped a tree down - because if they don't, the tree will just regrow - chopping the whole thing down to a stump isn't enough to kill it.
The issue is that when trees are grown in a garden, they tend to be taken such good care of that all the usual attackers aren't present. So a tree grows expecting to lose many of its limbs to pest attack, but when there are no pests, it ends up with too many branches, they all grow into each other, etc. This can then lead to other problems like bacterial infection which can kill a tree. So drastically pruning trees helps to mimic what happens in nature and in many cases is essential for the tree to remain healthy.
It's sort of like saying to a person they don't have to do any exercise because it's hard work, but then if a person doesn't do any exercise they end up with many health problems, heart disease, etc. and they'll end up with a shorter life. If you force a person to exercise it may be hard for them but they will have a longer, healthier life. The same goes for pruning trees - it might be tough but the tree will end up being healthier.
