    For emergency you could keep some of those old outdoor Christmas lights ( not the new led ones ) and light them up under the tunnels at night. They'll raise up the temperature a good bit. It's a system used also on fruit trees to protect flowers from late spring frosts.

One of the most difficult things for me to figure out is good timing and rhythm in terms of when to start and when to harvest and re-use parts of the garden. I'm curious also what seed starting mix you use and how you feed your seedlings. As always thanks for the wonderful content.

    Also if you want to add heat, consider looking into heat controlling thermostats which are popular for reptile keepers. Whether you use heat bulbs or something else it turns the power off/on to maintain a specific temp, I use it for my seed starts with a regular heating pad. You can also buy cheap $7 dimmer cords and adjust it manually. Lots of options with bulbs and such, when the temps drop below freezing I use a ceramic heat emitter bulb (no light, moderate heat) in the chicken coop to bump the temp up a few degrees for the birds, it is much safer than the super hot red heat lamps for chicks.

    Hi Patrick
    Here is what I would do to keep your tunnels warm. I would buy a spool of zip cord and some "pin sockets", the light bulb sockets that contractor use for temporary lighting. Make a string of lights for each tunnel. Put ten or so sockets on each string and use 60-100 watt light bulbs along the length. 14 gauge zip cord is good for 15 amps. Put the strings in the tunnels but not under the Agribon. Watts are watts and I think this is the cheapest and effective way to go. Even if the zip cord is overloaded a little, it will just be laying in the snow so will certainly stay cool. They even sell used regular light bulbs at Restore. If you have a long distance to a power outlet, consider buying some 14-2 house wire and just connecting the strings with wire nuts. and put a plug on the other end. Just an idea from a frugal Mainer. Good luck!

      Maybe you could run an underground electrical line from your house to the hoop house next year, and use a weatherproof receptacle, that way you could use a space heater, heat lamps or something if you needed to for a few days here and there when it gets brutally cold like this.

    I'm just worried about tomorrow's snow. The cold is another whole mess you just got to deal with. I'd toss one of those electric oil radiators in the hoop house. That way you don't have to worry about the plastic or cloth catching on anything. Be sure to use high gauge cables for power. They dont recommend extention cables as they draw quite a few Amps.

    Looking at the Weather Channel you guys had some severe low temperatures last night.
    Couple of questions.
    I have set up a spot in the basement like you have with the florescent lights and the mylar blankets to start seeds.
    Here is the question, under ideal conditions how long does it take for Bell Peppers and Tomatoes to grow to 18 inches?
    Thanks and keep the videos coming.

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 лет назад

      It depends on the grow room. We usually start tomatoes and peppers in mid-March. Tomatoes are typically 12 to 18" by mid-May and peppers are about 10".

    Very nice song! We live in Central Ohio, and we are expecting part of the polar vortex also. The wind chill is expected to get -35. Sounds like we are getting part of the same arctic air. It would be interesting to see how if the space heater works out and how your crops make it. A follow-up video would be nice!

    I watched a Charles Dowding video where he did early planting (in England) by making a hotbed of composting manure under his planting soil. It makes me wonder if a hotbed in a hoop house would negate the need for another heat source.

      I have been thinking for a long time about doing a winter greenhouse in my home state of Colorado using heat from a hot compost pile to radiate heat inside my greenhouse. My
      idea comes from the french scientist Jean Pain who used a hot compost pile to make all his hot water in his house. I would have a coiled copper pipe inside a large, mostly woody compost heap pumping the water through and then have the hot water line run into my greenhouse, a couple inches under the soil. I have seen videos of people using compost pile to heat their shower water, running a garden hose through the compost pile. It would work, I am sure of it, but just havent had time yet to make a greenhouse like our friend Patrick. This guy is legit for sure, keep watching his stuff you will learn a lot.

    • @BonjourCoco1
      @BonjourCoco1 5 лет назад

      David Livingston great idea ... I hadn't thought about just running hot water through pipes in the bed ... much more flexibility than having a compost pile in the greenhouse!

So far under the single layer my spinach, watercress and claytonia are doing just fine, but i was wondering about introducing home grown seedlings such as kale there and when it would be good time to start this process?

    Greetings Patrick! This will be my 1st spring starting out with marvellous wood chips. I am curious what the process will be for carrots? I would expect making 3 rows by pulling the mulch back, planting seeds and leaving the mulch pulled back until plants emerge??

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Robert! Yes, that's exactly right. Create furrows in the wood chips to plant the carrots in the soil. You can brush some of the chips back when the plants are mature enough (I'd wait for them to be well established and showing some root development).

  • @MountainGardenGirl
    @MountainGardenGirl 5 лет назад

    Wow, haven't been on your channel in a while, sure have come a long way since that first video. Congratulations! Had a thought about the cold protection. I still use shallow clear totes here and in the early spring, when temps can get too hot, I add a bowl of water under them to capture some of the excess heat. Even ones with cut out holes on either end benefit on chilly nights with the bowl or extra jugs of water. Your planting is pretty tight and it may be a room hog... a heater would definitely work better...but maybe the idea will find a use somewhere else.

    Wow, can't believe I'm just finding your channel! This is amazing!! I'm in Chicagoland also and always wonder if it is really worth it to go with a hoop house. I'd be eternally grateful full a video comparing your hinged mini tunnels vs the larger structure you have 🤓

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 лет назад +1

      Welcome to the channel, Ali! Are you looking for a video that compares the results between the two? I haven't done that video because the hoop house is in a much sunnier spot than the low tunnels. I only grow the most cold hardy crops in the low tunnels because of the limited sun. If all structures received equal sun, the hoop house would still probably outperform the low tunnels, because of the smaller opening, which means less opportunity for heat to escape. I hope this helps!

    Your plants are doing better than I am with the cold! You've been so inspiring to me. I watch your older videos a second time and pick up more information. Lovely song--you have a lot of musical range.
    I just read the new Eliot Coleman book (wonderful) and was interested in the concept that there's an optimal age of transplants and research out there on that. Tomatoes should only be four weeks old when they go in (assuming your climate can support that choice of course!), squash three weeks, peas and beans (in soil block or toilet paper tube) only 2 weeks. Do you know anything about this or find it to be true? - Wendy
