HOW TO INSTALL GLASS BLOCK WINDOW IN SHOWER

  • In this video I change out a window above a bathtub/shower to glass block. This makes the wall waterproof while still allowing light in. The translucent blocks add extra privacy too! Sit back and enjoy, while I do the work! My apologies for the footage of the mixing. I realized only afterwards that that clip could have been edited down to show just the basics instead of several minutes of mixing the mortar. This was filmed during my first year of creating videos for RUclips and could have been edited to exclude or include some better elements of the job. At the end of the day, it does show the basic steps and materials needed to install a glass block window, and I hope it is of assistance to anyone attempting this for themselves.

    Thanks for posting this. Nice idea about using pipe strap. I've already torn out a wood double-hung window that was installed over the tub and have the 30 glass blocks for the replacement. All masonry install and I plan to do a stone bottom to make a niche for the body wash bottles etc. In my Wash DC area Home Depot and Lowes will let one order the blocks but not the glass block mortar. So I'm getting that from Menards online. You, sir, are a mad mixer with that drill. I was thinking, but Vancouver Carpenter just holds the bucket with his insoles.

      I never thought this video would be so popular. I filmed it several years ago with an old Fuji camera that only had 720P resolution, and before I bought a GoPro. I posted this from old footage when I began my RUclips journey, and before my editing skills were acceptable! The mixing sequence should have been condensed to only a few shots. Did you notice I broke the bucket ? Hahaha Glad it has been of assistance!

      @@EverydayProjects I had not noticed you broke the bucket but now I see the side got busted out! LOL Good point about needing to mix the mortar on the dry side. It's imperative with glass blocks because, as my local building supply place told me, glass blocks don't absorb any moisture like bricks and concrete blocks would. I like to do things right but, of course, we're not building churches here. 😀

    Think I'll be doing this for a high level bathroom window. It'll be only 2 high but probably 8 long. Window is too high to look in or out but it adds a nice effect.
    Thanks for advice.

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  Год назад

      This window is in a master bathroom and lets in lots of light but gives privacy. Even looking in from the outside at night when the bathroom light is on, you can't make out what is inside. And, bonus, it's waterproof when the shower splashes water against it.

    Hi sir how much room are you leaving between the three block glasses and the window it seems a little bit tide. I am going to do an exact window

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  Год назад +2

      I think that the space between blocks can vary depending on your wishes. A bit wider would be good too if your mortar is mixed thick. I wish you every success with your project.

    What did you use for trim inside the shower after the window was installed?

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  3 года назад +4

      Just tile. In fact, at this time, I am yet to install the tile. Before the tile though, I will coat the entire area with "Redgard" which is a waterproofing liquid that dries to a thin, rubberized coating. The tile mortar will adhere perfectly to the Redgard.

    how do you get adequate mortar coverage on the top row when the block just barely fits in the opening ?

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  Год назад +1

      I made the opening a bit higher and the mortar over the top row on this install was about 1 inch high. I trimmed the opening with tile and the mortar I placed behind the upper tile was a bit heavier so all sides of the finished opening revealed the same amount of glass.

    Larger glass block windows show expansion strips on the side. I will just build a 8x42” vertical window ... no concern about using mortar all around, or ?

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  3 года назад +1

      I'm not an expert, just somebody who installed my own glass block window. I would search online for advice on expansion joints. I've seen glass block windows built into solid mortar that survived decades. Mine has no expansion strips and it's doing fine. You'd probably be alright with such a small window.

    Why do some people use silicone?

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  Год назад +2

      Do you mean they assemble the glass block wall with silicone instead of mortar? I think the standard is mortar but new ways surface all the time. I think silicone would be very expensive where mortar is comparably cheap. Thanks for watching.

      Stainless steel would last longer, no doubt. Galvanized strapping would be a step down. I had no hesitation using the steel strapping. As you wish.
