    1) What happens at the top? How do you get the final row of block into the channel?
    2) How can you be sure that the size of the frame/perimeter will match an integral number of blocks?

    • @PittsburghCorning
      @PittsburghCorning  9 лет назад +6

      The top channel is cut in half lengthwise. The exterior side of the channel is installed. After the top row of blocks in installed, you run a bead of glass block sealant along the inside corner of the second half of the channel and install it at the top.
      Rough openings are listed in the installation instructions.
      See detailed installation instructions at the Pittsburgh Corning website link in the video description above and click on the Project Planning section.

    So the first block that goes into the corner, then the other end blocks along the vertical track don't need sealant? Just snap in?
    No sealant on the horizontal spacer under the second row or subsequent rows either?
    How can it be?

    I just installed a single row of 4x8 blocks in my shower stall using the channels and spacers. My question is that since I have a six inch opening and 4" blocks, how do I trim it? I installed the shower side channel to be flush with the stud so I can get the Hardibacker over the lip of the channel. I now think this might be a mistake since the tile will be 3/4" away from the channel. Anyhow, it would be nice if there were some installation ideas for a non carpenter installer who needs to make these decisions.

    In this closed opening how do you install the top row? Do you not use a perimeter channel above the last row of blocks. If you do use one would it not be difficult to get the last block in?

  • @lyndim100

    How do you fit the top row of blocks in? Thanks!

  • @carlbs11

    Also, the website says to use the sealant on the exterior seams, but to use grout in wet environments on the interior. Does this make sense? Since the sealant would certainly be a good seal for water on the interior also?

    My shower window opening is exactly 18"x30". I bought 6" glass blocks to fit because those dimensions are divisible by 6. When I brought them home and did a dry run there was a gap in both width and height. When you install channel and spacers, does that compensate for gaps?

    • @PittsburghCorning
      @PittsburghCorning  8 лет назад

      The opening will need to be sized to accommodate the size of the blocks. For a 18” x 30” installation using the 6x6” glass blocks with the ProVantage I Installation, the r/o needs to be 18x29-3/4.” If you need additional information, our technical services group would be happy to assist you. What if I want to replace an old metal window with one of the Pittsburg Corning pre-made windows with vent (like Model # V2234DC) but the existing window is in a wood frame on a house with vinyl siding (and the window will be inside a shower)? The closest sized window is more than an inch smaller than the rough opening but the next size up is larger than the rough opening. I've seen videos on how to install in concrete or masonry walls, but not in wood framed walls. Also, the glass block window is 3" deep but the existing sill is at least 6" deep.

    • @PittsburghCorning
      @PittsburghCorning  9 лет назад

      Basically, you can install the Pittsburgh Corning window with the vent using our standard GuardWise basement window installation instructions and then put a trim/stop around the perimeter on the inside and outside to secure the window into place, or, you can nail a metal “tie” (brick tie etc.) to the wood first and that will give the mortar something to adhere to. Then be sure to completely seal the perimeter. For our GuardWise basement window installation instructions, go to the Pittsburgh Corning website and search for GuardWise. If you need additional information, our technical services group would be happy to assist you. Please call 800-871-9918 and ask for Tom. Thanks.

    What is the secret to installing the very last block? This step is obviously very important so i'm curious why it was skipped in this demo.
    Thank you!

    As a matter of security, how strong is the plastic system ? I can't see the plastic channel secure enough to use in an external wall. Looking at the different videos that demonstrate installation of glass block windows, most ot them have steel brackets which are imbedded in the mortar between the rows of glass block. These in turn are screwed to the window frame. This seems far more secure than a plastic channel. Please explain!

    • @PittsburghCorning
      @PittsburghCorning  9 лет назад

      The plastic channels are attached via screws to the frame of the opening. The ProVantage® installation system using the plastic channel has been tested for and is recommended for use in exterior panels up to 50 Sqft and in interior panels up to 85 sqft. The ProVantage® installation system also has a stainless steel anchor option which can be used instead of the plastic channel for panels larger than the sizes specified above. See detailed installation instructions at the Pittsburgh Corning website link in the video description above and click on the Project Planning section. If you need additional information please call our Technical Support Group at 800-871-9918.

    Is this for basement security windows

  • @PittsburghCorning
    @PittsburghCorning  11 лет назад

    You don't have to use the perimeter channels but could instead follow the ProVantage II installation instructions which call for anchors.
    We also have prefabricated GuardWIse windows that you could purchase. GuardWise windows come in 12"x18" through 40"x48" in 2 inch increments. For more information visit our website.

    What I want to know is how does anyone afford them. I found glass block on Amazon for $8/block but the shipping charge is $25 per block. I need 50 so the block would cost me $400 but my shipping charge would be $1250.00. No thanks!

      You go down to Home Depot or Lowes and pick them up without any shipping cost. IF you order them from Home Depot for example. they arrive at the Home Depot dock for you to pickup without shipping cost.
