- Highly requested for a year, we take a look at the only recorded wreck of a Big Boy, the biggest steam locomotive ever built
Stay tuned until May for more videos. By the way I'm still ok despite this coronavirus crap.

James Robert Anderton was my grandfather, my dad's dad, that I never had the chance to meet because of this tragedy. Just wish we could have had some time together but it was way before my time. It's sad my dad grew up without his dad as well. 😢
Then I believe your Aunt Lola would have been close friends with my aunt Emily. Small world! I grew up in Rawlins on 14th street, left when I was 13, now in Alaska. Aunt Emily is in Florida.
@@robertmakinen7189 we are also in Florida. Yes small world. My Aunt Lila is in Utah now has been for a while and my dad, Lola's brother, Robert Duane Anderton passed away a few years ago.
I love Alaska visited Homer during the summer in 2013. Absolutely breath taking.
Oh my god that is sad
i am sorry to hear that
“So let me tell you about my career with the Union Pacific Railroad”.
“I didn’t say it was a long career “.
“How long then?”
“One hour and twenty minutes, I accidentally wrecked a train because I was new, aaaaaaand I got fired”
“Oh”
Did I cause it?
Spicy The King he ment knew like I know this
@Spicy The King oops i got confused
@Spicy The King *grammer
“A Union Pacific big boy crashed 67 years ago” * *Calm Music Intensifies* *
The original planned music was more fitting (Being the same in the opening of the 1989 Cajon video) but I got slammed with a fake copyright claim before it premiered and not wanting to deal with it I had to swap the music with one of the same time period as the Big Boy's career.
@@Thunderbolt_1000_Siren I'm starting to dislike RUclips with each passing day because of how easy it is to claim copyright on content creators.
Big boy 4005 is papyrus
@The Riley Boys um yeah but I have a video that is popular it was taken down and removed by some idiot who said he owns the video but he didn't I went through three months for the strike and claim to go down and suffered copyright school
@@Thunderbolt_1000_Siren I actually like this music better. Good job!
I can only imagine how frightening that big UP chime whistle would be held wide open as it derailed.
Imagine, your on your second hour of employment you've got the switch in hand and the biggest piece of equipment your boss owns is wrecking in front of you. That's got to be one of the worst first day ever. Wonder if they paid him for the hour.
G r a h a m I doubt he got his pay.
hears the haunting whistle turns to see her on her side skidding that engine is not alone in her berth at the muesum it is said if you die a violent death or died without knowing what killed you your spirit is trapped
Like some mastadine dying slowly
She was blowing her whistle loud and long in horror, hoping to stop before entering the switch. But, it was too late.
Thunderbolt: "and threw the emergency brakes," Me:but it was too late.
B C you are right. But they slow the 4005 down before it derail
Gamer fan 844 get now
B C you mean get it now
Sawyer Lowry yes I’m a fan of the engine. And I did video one her
same i said that too
It's amazing that only 1 out of 25 had an accident, that's a pretty outstanding safety record
* I do not count 4014 minor derailment as the engine stayed on the rails and was more of minor inconvenient than a full-blown wreak like 4005*
Mr.James Conductor not really.
Technically 2 if you count the minor derailment of 4014's driving wheels.
@Douglas Taylor he means *_major_* train wreck
Big Boy 4014 oh yea sorry
And it wasn’t even the trains fault it was a human error
I know I’m a total geek for saying this, but I’ve actually seen 4005 at the Forney several times. She’s a beautiful beast, only reminder of her wreck is a few dents on the boiler.
We’re all here because we’re train nerds so.. ✌️
I saw a few dents on His boiler too. (I said his because the name Big Boy) you wouldn't know if he was in an accident unless you read the board of the info on the accident.
I’ve see him as well and there’s definitely scars in the metal just not on the boiler. The left side cylinders and the entire left side of the tender have large surface gouging from the ballast and rail. The scars also confirm the tender is the original and wasn’t replaced after the accident.
Dude, Railfans and we train hoppers love your type of geek. I havent been to the meuseum....yet ....and I havent hopped for years
I can also hear her whistling blowing loud and long for dear mercy.
Yeah, that disturbed me. A big boy getting destroyed triggers any railfan.
*British railfans just chilling*
It survived. It's now in a museum.
@Green shy guy Gaming do you know what a joke is?
Green shy guy Gaming Indeed, there are actually some dents on 4005, the scars of the derailment.
Destroyed? Of the 25 members of the class 14 survived to today, not one was scraped because of a crash. All in all Big Boy has more surviving members than the A4 class which Mallard is part of, quite good if you ask me.
I NEVER KNEW A BIG BOY DERAILED! I'm so excited. In 9hours we will find out how a switch made one of the biggest steam locomotives in the world derail.
Beau Plaisance yep
Repair paint become papyrus
This is only the first actually, the second one is not nearly as bad. 4014 went on the ground at Rawlins after seemingly splitting the switch and going into the gauge.
Was put back on the rails within a few hours.
I guess big boys and switches don’t like each other.
Did you know 4014 derail but it wasn’t like 4005 it was just the lead wheel came off the rails
Beau plaisanceThe sudden change of direction at speed brings Newton's first law of motion into play,an object in motion will travel in same direction unless acted upon by an outside force. In this case a sudden change direction caused the loco to be caught between a rock and a hard place and inertia took over and over she went.
7:34 “only have been working for 1 hour and 20 minutes”
O O F he had been there for a hour and there was already a train crash, jeez, no that’s bad luck right there
Robert Lamarr He had one heck of a first day on the job!
now*
macmedic892 a 1 hour, 20 minute career.
@bg104 not necessarily, as it was not his fault of the derail but some confusion
doesnt speak english no interpreter him in charge of a switch with zero fucking training great fucking idea
I never knew the largest steam locomotive had a wreck
Any locomotive is capaple to wreck. Regardless of what kind it is.
@Robert Blandin but it's still around so the only thing that's sad is the lose of the crew
loss*
So did the biggest boat a few decades earlier so I guess it makes sense.
Two DM&IR Yellowstones were also wrecked during their careers; 224 in a runaway in Colorado and 237 in a runaway in Biwabik, MN. The former was repaired and continued in service until retirement, the latter was deemed a total loss and scrapped soon after.
My great grandfather was James Anderton, the brakeman. He was pinned between the cab and tender for ten hours. Someone was able squeeze lit cigarettes in for him to smoke through the night as they attempted to extricate him. This was a really interesting video, thank you for posting.
I know Baby wish we could have met him. ❤

3:49 The music fits perfectly.
For any of you interested in Big Boy preservation, here is some information. Obviously most of you know #4005 sits on display and #4014 is operational and is part of UP's Heritage Fleet, but here are the whereabouts of the others.
6 other Big Boys survive with #4005 and #4014:
1. #4004 sits outside on display at Holliday Park in Cheyenne, Wyoming and was cosmetically restored in 2018.
2. #4006 sits outside on display at the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, Missouri and has traveled farther than any Big Boy in freight service, which was 1,064,625 miles.
3. #4012 used to be on outdoor display at Steamtown, USA in Bellow Falls, Vermont until 1984, when it was moved to the Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pennsylvania and sat outside since it was too big for the turntable and roundhouse. Today, it is going under a cosmetic restoration, but there is word that it might be put into operating condition, but there has to be track checks too see if the areas, including bridges and curves, could handle her weight.
4. #4017 sits on indoor display at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The shed she sits in is climate-controlled.
5. #4018 sits on outdoor display at the Museum of the American Railroad in Frisco, Texas. It was moved there from the museum's former location in Dallas, Texas by rail on August 25, 2013.
6. #4023 sits on outdoor display at Kenefick Park in Omaha, Nebraska and was the only Big Boy to be moved on a highway. It used to be on display outside the UP's Omaha Shops until it was closed.
I remember seeing the 4005 at Denver Transportation Museum in person. And I didn’t even know that he wrecked before until now.
probably a different train
@@minigundozer14 It's not.
If you look on the left side of the boiler there is still some damage.
I have been to the museum where the 4005 is. He seems to have a not really noticeable dent on the left side of his boiler, if you saw that and if you looked at the info board you'd know that that locomotive crashed once.
I’ve been waiting since the trailer came out
I was waiting really impatiently.
Thomas Guy You mean since the premiere started?
My Dad’s Father was the brakeman on the train when it crashed, James R. Anderton, my Dad was only 4 when His Dad passed away from this tragic accident.

Amazing that same locomotive became one of the survivors... A testament to their value to the railroad, their great construction and skill of workmen in those shops. Luckily the same skillsets existed to bring 4014 back to life...

I'm really happy to have helped you with this wreck documentary. It was really fun to make those clips.
I'm glad you made this I was wanting a more in depth explanation of the accident it's cool how there are still lots of dents from it
How could it have been an accident when the switch was deliberately thrown by a couple of shady characters?
I've never even heard of the 'Big Boy'. But it must have been a pretty amazing piece of machinery. May that brave crew Rest In Peace.
Union Pacific recently completely restored Big Boy #4014 to running order and for the past couple years it has been on tour. I saw it in Fort Worth and followed it down to Houston. If you lookup Union Pacific Steam Shop they have updates for the next tour.
@@Travelinmatt1976i also came from
Fort worth i also seen it!
Very impressive analysis of the details of the wreck of UP "Big Boy" 4005, the locomotive was derailed, later rebuilt and returned to service hauling freight. It is always a serious struggle trying to place a large articulated locomotive back on the railroad tracks & it's great to see that UP 4005 still exists today being displayed in Denver, Co. There are many quality details involved in the damage of machinery equipment and it's interesting to learn about the operation of railroad equipment due to the immense size of the equipment that is being used.
Thanks for the awesome videos! I’ve been binge watching your wreck videos and was excited to see another one. Very entertaining! Keep it up!!!!
Thanks for the awesome documentary!!

Doesn’t Big Boy weigh a whopping 1 million pounds along with the tender?
well to be more exact, we weigh around 1,250,000 pounds
@@union_4014 lol 11/10 on the account name.

Yeah he said it was like 700 000 pounds. The engine itself was 1200000. Or above that.
Big Boy 4014 Any talk of restoring another Big Boy?. I know there are a few candidates.
I saw that same train in person and it was 60 years old. I saw it pass through a town called Wheaton to go to West Chicago for display
Your videos are outstandingly well done, thank you for the great bits of history.
Glad to see this one. Got home a bit late and caught this at the end.
Well done. An interesting story. Imagine actually seeing that wreck happen! that the two switchmen lived is amazing! that is, if they were 'right there' as the animation seemed to show.
I doubt they were standing there. Probably were running like all hell a we at from it.
This was well done. Thank you for the creation.
Glad you enjoyed it!
You did an amazing job at explaining what happened, unlike other videos on this topic

You did a great job!
Thanks for sharing the story of one of the most infamous chapters in the history of the Big Boys! It's gratifying to know that the 4005 is still with us, and while she may never run again, it's wonderful to know that her story will be remembered by future generations.
thanks for these videos
Glad you like them!
At least one of this magnificent family of rail giants is alive and well today. Hope you guys caught the 4014 running around
I have a suggestion for you. I'm from Rochester, NY and we had a pretty big runaway train come thru nearly 60 years ago. It's actually the story that inspired the Runaway Train movie with Jon Voight and Eric Roberts. Was talked about in LIFE magazine too
Another great video! Keep up the great job.
Big boy engines are awesome! There used to be two that sat on some abandoned rails for years in Sacramento, and me and my friends used to climb on top of it and try to get in and stuff😂. Fun times and a really astonishing piece of technology.
Keep up the good content!
Well today marks 68 years since this tragic derailment and hopefully something like this will never happen again. It's also great to know that 4005 survived the wreck and another big boy 4014 returned to steam in 2019 and I even got to see it myself that year
I watch all your cool RUclips videos! Your awesome!
Awww! NOT THE BIG BOY! SUCH A FAST STEAM TRAIN DERAILED! Anyway good video!
1. it was repaired
2. steam locomotive. a train is the railcars while a locomotive is a powered rail vehicle that pulls or pushes a train
3. “fast”, the big boys could only go 80 mph max. try the mallard, 126 mph. try the pennsylvania railroad t1, 140 mph. try the pennsylvania railroad s1, 156 mph.
it was fast but was rated 30 or under when switching tracks anything over an she may tip over
This crash reminded me a bit of Henry's derailment in Thomas and Friends's episode 'The Flying Kipper'
I wouldn’t wanna wreck one of those titans
Incredible History... thx for telling :)
Oh man, that's the engine I saw in Colorado's museum! Did not know it was involved in a wreck. It is positively ENORMOUS. Fascinating to get up close and personal to the Big Boy. He is BIG! If you're ever in Denver you must go see this. Lots of fascinating cars and trains there.
I especially appreciate the music used for the ending credits.
That moment the big boy crashed my my skin crawl.
All that caused by inexperience and irresponsibility can derail or destroy anything from a glass to a locomotive at that scale.

How about that train wreck in my state? It happened in Hoxie, AR (I think) and it involves TOXIC chemicals and a collision. I still don’t know the cause of the wreck to this day.
moonprincess500 in 2014? Crew fatigue lead to a signal violation and subsequent incident.

HELLO
In my opinion this was the best episode yet!
One interesting fact of Big Boy 4005, long before UP 4014's oil conversion, in December 1946 it was the only Big Boy that was converted to oil as a result of a coal strike. However, the single burner that was installed did not heat the firebox evenly, thus resulting in poor fuel combustion for 18 months. It was converted back to coal in June 1948.
I never knew a big boy derailed

Thanks, will do! So long as plenty of info is present as some older wrecks espescially in the 1800s have limited info.
@@Thunderbolt_1000_Siren the one from ohio where the crew ran water too low and blew boiler tubes out the front is one

It’s amazing how a small switch can derail a Big Boy
Keep on steaming 4014!
Ryan Rainey That’s the problem. A small switch made it change direction too fast. Same with driving a car on ice. Oh, you can do it, but don’t try to turn too fast. The car will want to go forward and not take the turn.
Yeah, not to mention the whole thing weights more than 1,000,000 pounds without the rolling stock. The momentum it's carrying is way to much.
I know that the mass of a big steam loco moving at speed is huge, but it cannot turn fast
I wasn’t trying to get into physics, i was just saying its incredible that a small switch can derail one of UP’s finest
John Wilkes Booth: Sic Semper Tyrannis!
One set of of the 8 driving wheels went in2 siding at originally planned as well as the pilot wheels n the other set of 8 driving wheels n trailing wheels went along the mainline because the switch was closed b4 the 2nd set of drivers could cross n looking deeply at the screen i think that's what caused her 2 wreck in my opinion

Just like #4014
This was most likely after they converted it back. They used it as a test for an oil burning Big Boy but it wasn’t worth it back then so they converted it back to coal.
