***** Funny you should mention the Chocobo from the Final Fantasy series, I'm currently playing FF IX to completion on my PS3 right now. I just met Choco in the the Chocobo Forest. I was actually wondering if the Chocobo would be on the list.
***** this was lovely, although there's not many games outside nintendo i couldn't agree more with your list. HOWEVER! chocobos are not all flightless: some of them have been able to fly ever since FFIV, albeit admittedly they're the rare ones. as for prominent birds, i feel like mentioning new zealand story and its adorable kiwi.

I'm sure you arleady knew this, but Duck Hunt technically turned 39, not 31. The reason for this being that in 1976, Nintendo released a toy version of Duck Hunt with a light gun shaped like a shotgun, and a unit that displayed images of ducks on the walls. The toy was designed by Gunpei Yokoi before Nintendo got into the videogame market. Once they did, however, they saw that the new platform was a perfect avenue for selling their previous success to a new market.

King dedede is my best bird
Ditto. Dedede (especially his Southern-fried anime depiction) and the Piplup line are some of my favorites. I love penguins.
Tis a good list, I think I'd have had Tiki the Kiwi from The New Zealand Story somewhere on mine, such a big game for me as a kid.

Yeah, I had it n the Amstrad as a kid, from okaying the Amiga version at a friends house to death.
But I bought a Japanese mega drive back then just to buy new zealand story.

Empyrea of the Dragon Quest Series (most notably in 8) you can use near the end of most of the games to fly over everything and she's really cool, especially with the orchestral score sweeping over you as you fly. It's very breath taking at times.

JZNES This is the one I was going to mention. It appears in multiple games as a plot focused character, as well as on the crest of Loto (Dragon Quest I-III).

Squawks from the Donkey King Country series! He's the only animal buddy to have appeared in every DKC game. He's also very prominent in DK64. I would have thrown him on this list along with Psycrow from Earthworm Jim but your list is pretty solid!

Great list! I want to suggest a bird from my own personal fav: The giant bird head from Super Mario Bros 2 at the end of each stage. He's cool because you climb into his mouth to progress to the next level. Then, right before you fight the final boss, the bird head comes out of the wall for an epic battle to the death!

I don't think it really needs to be on the list, but Bloodwing from Borderlands came to mind.
I think that Agony, the mascot of now defunct games-dev Psygnosis could have got a mention (but would only just have managed to edge into tenth place).
The owl had its own game, and made for a pretty memorable logo for the team.

Peter phoenix (shining force 2) and the bird taxi from landstalker were quite memorable for me.
At first I was quite worried that if no pokemon would make the list, and it was a huge release seeing them eventually.

The first Chuka Taisen boss, the second Parodius boss, the Ghosts 'n goblins crows, the giant eagle in Golden Axe, the iron eagle in Strider ... :)

The Crows in the "Murder of Crows" vigor from Bioshock: Infinite are pretty cool. I guess also Plague Knight from Shovel Knight as he has that mask, but he's more of a plague doctor than a bird.
Loved Shadow Warriors(UK) / Ninja Gaiden(US), still have it today and my NES still works, and not gone yellow.
Good video - What about DuckTales!? Great game and great bird characters. Super Mario 2 was also full of bird characters with Birdo, the eagle head where you ended levels (and had to fight once) and those birds you had to ride across the screen occasionally.

I think the Flicky from Sonic The Hedgehog should have made the list! After all, he first originated from his own game 'Flicky' and then became a staple of the Sonic series. I'd say Flicky is pretty iconic!

Megaman Battle Network 3 had a fetch quest with the extremely vague hint: "One of many birds." Turns out the clue refers to very hard to see origami birds in a jar tucked away in a hospital room.

Some other notable birds in video games include: Pengo the penguin from the arcade game Pengo, the various birds in the Angry Birds series, the owl from The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (called Kaepora Gaebora in later games).
Angry birds is a mobile game, not a video game.

King Dedede would have been on my list, i dident really know about him before i saw him on the Smashbros dojo during brawl development, and after hearing his theme song and trying a kerby game i desided he should be my main in brawl.
idk what i liked so much, i think it was the humor, hes pretty funny and i love his taunt where he spins around and slaps his belly :p
I think Articuno is my favourite legendary bird out of generation I Pokémon.

There 2 birds that come to my mind immediately when talking about videogames: SM64 owl at Whomp's fortress and Nakoruru's hawk (from samurai shodown)
I always remembered at the beginning of stage 9 in Golden Axe you get off of a giant eagle! From stages 7-9 you fought on a big bird and in stage 8 you were flying and didn't even know it until you got off of its head in stage 9. Yeah, that's one I wont forget.
I was starting to wonder if the number 1 pick was going to make it on the list. Thanks for not disappointing. ;)

Probably already mentioned, but you left out Pen from the Shining Force Series! I always loved protecting the little guy in Shining Force 3, although he was worthless unless you happened to use Gameshark codes. Don't you know what you started?! Now you are going to have to do one on dragons, frogs, monkeys, and bugs!
Not exactly a bird per say, but Nina from BoF comes to mind right away, since she can often turn into a full majestic bird.
I really love Kazooie and I'm really thankful she made the list. I actually thought she would make #3.

Though I was hoping for either Kaepora Gaebora from the Zelda series or the hawk from Karateka on the list, I say you nailed the entire list spot on, dude. Here's why my picks would've been in the running:
Kaepora was kind of an annoying owl in Link's Awakening and other games, but he is a wise old owl after all. He gives you advice and cracks a few jokes here and there.
As for the hawk from Karateka, my god, that bird just wants you to die. Enough said. Every time you see it flying at you its a heart attack for your life. He swoops down and starts pecking you more than it should so you oughta defend yourself. At least you get to fight him before the big boss in the end.
