If you think about it, the 386 is from 1985, thats a 13 year gap between the CPU and Windows 98. Its the equivalent of running windows 7 on 200 MHz Pentium I, or Windows 10 on a Pentium IV
Thats not a 80386, it's a 80386sx, a slow cheap version. The proper equivalents would be Celerons from that era, or a Pentium in 2024 terminology.. somewhat ironically.
Just to reveal the magic :) It was installed on 486DX2 66MHz 64KB cache actually, seen on 06:32:00 (install time) after POST before boot to install. Minimum reqs were 486 and FPU. After installation it looks like running on 80386SX 16MHz on 00:01:23 (boot time), probably different HW or VM settings
Blue Moon It supports Y2k, but probably some other programs (which doesn't support y2k) messed up with CMOS and that's why it's 1916 in BIOS. Look closely - it supports years from 1901 to 2099. BTW. I saw 286 which also supported y2k well.
My old Athlon II OC 3.0 GHz (from 2.6) had around the same startup time on windows 7. it had a 500GB SATAII hdd with 7200rpm and 8 gigs of ram. The gfx card was a GT240 1GB. After putting a 128GB ssd in it it gone up to around 20-30 seconds. lol
Somewhere in my past, circa 1998, my Dad's voice is ringing through my head: "Windows 95 will NOT run great on a 486! You want at least a Pentium or higher or else go with 3.1!" .... Now I see a vid running Windows 9**8** on a **3**86! Wowzers..... :)
Windows 95SE users can bypass hardware requirement checks with the undocumented /NM setup switch. This allows installation on computers with processors as old as the 80386SX of 12.5mhz with 8mb ram
I wonder if it would be possible to install w98 on a faster system and then just transplant the HDD into a 386. I've transplanted HDDs with w98 installs into different systems before, and as long as it can find the driver files (it helps to copy the CD contents to the HDD, which I always do with w98 systems) it usually can detect all the hardware and work normally, but I suspect it wouldn't be as simple with such a large architecture change as pentium to 386, or even 486 to 386
but how did you tweak the setup to not check for 486 66MHz ? I can not see because it is in fast forward, I see the errors, but how do you lie the setup :) ?
Curious to how much ram is on your machine. According to my text book Intel 386 DX has an address bus of 32-bits. Which gives 2^32, 4 gigabytes of physical memory. The 386 SX has an address bus of 24-bits, 16 megabytes.
In theory the 386 could address 4 GB of RAM, but in practice no 386 motherboard could support more than 16/32 MB of RAM. Until the Pentium 4 era no consumer-level PCs could access 4 GB of RAM or more because of motherboard limitations.
at one point I saw a memory count of 16000 KB during a reboot. That is very very odd. 16MB typically counts as 16,384 KB. Though I am not 100 percent certain, this could be fake.
something seems a little sus , as unless your using VGA Capture and/or a failing hard disk it shouldnt of been that slow, i had it working in the hayday on an old 386@ 20mhz and sure it took little over an hour but not no 3+hrs
Windows 98 SE has issues with the 386 due to Internet Explorer 5 requiring a 486 processor or higher, therefore Windows 98 SE may install fine... but, you'll run into a major problem where explorer will crash on startup.
Making an emulator for a 286 is possible to build ... but that would destroy completely the performance X) This is why I said to emulate and not to run. An ARM computer can run x86 code through an emulator. An x86 machine could run x64 code through an emulator, but nobody does this because it doesn't make any sense
Uh ... why ? Why running your 64 bit application on a slow 32 bit CPU that would be even slower when emulating while you can buy for dirt cheap a 64 bit cpu nowadays ? 64 bit has been around for about 15 years now, so even an old athlon 64 or one of the 64 bit pentium 4 will be able to run this
I still remembered that I installed Windows 2000 on the 586 at my home in 2004, which make the Windows 98 2min startup time delayed to 6min, and my parents were unhappy about it. I also found it too slow, so I proposed to upgrade our Windows 98 to NT 4.0 instead, unfortunately my parents didn't agree and forced me to put the Windows 98 back. I hate Windows 98.
