To be honest, I think you would never notice a difference, if anything with B-raw black magic offers the same in terms of DR. Both excellent cameras, Panasonic got a lot of cool features however that the Blackmagic does not.

Whatever your project calls for that’s the camera you use.
@@Sethmotley absolutely. someone needs to evaluate what their needs are. For the majority of people (especially starting out), I would recommend an S5II or IIx over a blackmagic cam. The Panasonic can be used for "content creation" which sometimes means "hybrid shooting" for some people. But it can also be built up to be a proper "cinema camera" (i.e. shutter angle, waveform, XLR add-on, external battery, even BRAW). Will it do it as well as the Pyxis? Debatable, but most would probably say no. However, the Pyxis can't go the other way and be turned into a hybrid camera. It's impossible. No built-in evf, fixed screen, and while it can take stills, nobody would use it for that dedicated purpose. Most people would need to "graduate" into a proper cinema camera like the Pyxis. In other words, they're getting those kinds of jobs or they have the free time to dedicate to filmmaking. Other people without that luxury could use the S5II for a variety of purposes. Photo, video, social, even a vacation/family camera. Luckily, since both are L-mount, they can be used alongside each other.

That's still my point, regardless of what i think of the Pyxis. I just expected more.

I've been using my Lumix S5IIX for everything. I've decided to ditch the BMD Video assist for a Hollyland Mars M1 Enhanced. The biggest reason being that the HDMI latency when recording RAW is bad, so much so that it's difficult to follow your subject when your monitor is off by about a second. Then if you want to wirelessly transmit that image to the Director or Focus puller, you need a separate transmitter that will add additional latency making focus pulling essentially pointless. The Mars M1 has a built in transmitter and when you disable RAW recording on the camera, HDMI latency is mitigated. Yes RAW is the best codec for projects, but the ProRes footage from the Lumix S5IIX is very rich, has loads of detail and on a proper computer can be graded well. So honestly, what is this coming down to? If you want BRAW, get a BMD camera.
It's not just about numbers... Blackmagic color science give a look that is NOT that of BRAW obtained from Panasonic. I know because I have to match Panasonic and BM quite often. BM is less clean and more cinematic (and I love it). About continuous AF... with DJI you can nowadays achieve it. With the advantage of being able to use it on whatever lens you want, vintage, anamorphic etc. Instead than being forced to use just the usual photo AF lenses. This camera mod is extremely welcome, but it doesn't mean you can use a Panasonic thinking to have a BM in your hands, because it isn't like that.
I enjoyed your vid, I like your content personality. It seems a little biased which is cool, but you gave the Lumix features you had to add to the camera. the Pyxis is just a, box form-factor, bmp4k with a larger sensor(FF), that it can barley handle. the S5iix is a way better value. building it out is fine, or can be used straight out the box. 3,200 for the Pyxsis, as a starting point is not a good deal. You can't use the bmp 4k or 6k cameras to crop in (windowing) without getting more noticeable noise. You have to record at the full range of any of their camera's sensor and resize the image later in a video editor. Don't down scale (windowing) in camera, unless noisy image is ok.
As a professional sound mixer with over 8 years of industry experience in the biggest market in America, a camera without a standardized time code input cannot be used on professional narrative sets or anything that isn’t mos. I don’t understand why people keep taking mirrorless cams and trying to make them “cinema”. A used ursa or red Komodo isn’t that much more expensive. And if you’re just a hobbyist, then why are you so hellbent on making your camera look “cinema” just enjoy it.
As a professional filmmaker for near 20 years I have to disagree. On big productions absolutely there are some things that are always expected. But the world of indie projects and smaller productions is full of these types of cameras as b, c and even A cams and that is only going to increase in the future as budgets get smaller and the industry is required to do more with less. I live in a world where I may see an Arri on set or an Fx3 and to be fair if these cams get you in striking distance of ‘pro’ cinema cameras with a ‘cinema’ look, of course everyone will want that. If you think these cams are for hobbyists only you’re seriously misjudging the evolving landscape of film. Old guard mentality.
@@thesavagefilmmaker you haven’t been the sound mixer who gets called by the editor asking why there’s no timecode when they shot on an fx3 that requires a usb dongle for timecode and the acs had no room to rig that usb dongle and now the editor has to sync manually for 30 days worth of footage. A Panasonic with HDMI timecode is even worse. You really expect an editor to clap sync a 30 day show? My point isn’t that these cameras are hobbyist cams. More so than just using the right camera for the job instead of rigging something out for something it wasn’t meant to do. If you needed to put all these things on your mirrorless to service your production, just use something that’s purpose made so you don’t make people like me have a harder time. It just passes along the stress to different people instead of using the correct tool. I’m an IA card carrying PSM in LA. I’m not just a filmmaker. I see this shit on a daily basis. I’m not saying this to bash you, but more to encourage others to use the tools that can best serve EVERYONE and not just the picture. I have no doubt your mirrorless produces professional picture. Shit I’m a believer in lighting over anything. But understand it’s not just about the picture. Remember my department keeps you in sync and we give u the fancy smart slate the least we’d expect is seamless timecode inputs.
BRAW from the S5iix and BRAW from the BMCC6k or the Pyxis are identical as they use very similar sensors and the implementation of BRAW on the S5iix is excellent.
@@Wildridefilms I've used both cameras, and the Blackmagic delivers a more "filmic" image than the S5iix... The sensor isn't the only factor; if it were, many cameras would look identical... Image processing is also a significant part of the equation.
Timecode? Slate metadata? Possible to rec with a Nucleus? Also does this cine cube cage has any in-built 15mm rod clamps? I'd hate to add an additional 15mm base to make the whole setup taller
If you used 15mm rails on the bottom, it would be no taller than any other cine-rig that has bottom rails. However you could easily rig rails to the top plate as well if you didn't want to make it taller. Timecode over HDMI only.
Thank you so much for the video, this is what I was looking for. How would you stabilize footage when shooting with the s5iix. Steadicam or gimbal or something else?
Personally I would just use the S5iix's in body stabilisation, it's very effective, the best I've tried. If your lens also has stabilisation it's even better. I don't need anything extra, but If I wanted smooth tracking shots then a Gimbal like the DJI Rs3 would be your best bet.
@@thesavagefilmmaker Have you ever used cinesaddle (there are analogs for 150$) or its analogs? I think maybe using ibis and cinesaddle will result in a super smooth picture?
My friend you have actually skipped completelly the issue that for me made the S5IIX sadly simply not an option: the risk of moiré in the footage due to the lack of optical low pass filter. I really wanted to buy this camera but couldn't stand the idea that suddenly some footage could be ruined by this. And I saw some scary tests. Could you be so kind as to share your experience regarding this? Have you had problems? I Thank you!
You’re right that is a very valid concern. I have not noticed this as an issue and filmed on the 6k pro’s which also has no OLPF, I have very rarely noticed the moire issues in filming, but I have not filmed enough with the S5 to give a good assessment yet.
SDI is better. They’re faster and they lock in place. Neither Reds, nor Arris have hdmi ports. It’s redundant. It’s like having usb-c and asking where the slower old usb ports are. You can convert if you need to.
The rigid and the cindback are just a glorified D tap splitter. Looks cool, feels well built , but it does not do anything for 20x of the price of a D tap splitter.
Hard disagree on that one, when you change the shape you change the balance, and that lets you attach things like you would an actual larger cinema camera. This is a much more elegant way to attach a v-mount plus accessories than the regular cheese plate, v-mount plate, and rails, that regular dslr rigs always require.
@@thesavagefilmmaker sure , but a much more pricey way as well. Buying a V mount plate , a rod mount and 2 cheese plates that attach on thr rods or on the side of the cage will come out much cheaper for a beginner. If someone is not a beginner than they can just buy a komodo and dont have to “replicate “ the box shape. ( deepends ofc on what you want from your camera because some mirorrless have different much needed features than the komodo , this is just an example) Box is easier to rig , no arguing over that, but the price on a 3D printed accessory that does not do anything more than a regular D tap splitter , it does not have a voltage meter either like the good quality splitters is crazy.
If it were CNC machined, with a voltage meter built in and with a QR thst allows you to attach and deattach from the cage in seconds.. well that would be something.
Did you take shots at Caleb for not having it in stock? 😂 This Is wild because Caleb actually started this cine back as a small business owner, and then major companies were more money decided to copy him and what he was doing because they seen how well it was doing. So it’s cool to buy this, but to take shots at a small business owner, who actually paved away for these major companies is hilarious. Definitely will be buying one, but without taking shots at somebody who clearly came up with the idea !

Imagine if the S1H mkii has black magic internally 😮😮😮
Can we dare to dream?
having better specs doesn't always mean better...I prefer having a camera that produce a beautiful image than having the perfect Swiss Army knife..
Can we see this setup on an DJI Gimbal
I don't have a DJI gimbal.
What "other" company makes similar rigs?
Cineback
I’m having serious problems trying to connect my Blackmagic monitor to my S5iix, it won’t allow me to access BRAW.
Enable raw output data to hdmi
Enable raw data to hdmi and change your system frequency to 59.93 it won’t work on 24p frequency.
@@thesavagefilmmaker I did this but on my Black magic monitor it says codec not available? I don’t even know what that means
Z Cam F6
No Ibis, No auto focus, No B-raw. Otherwise good.
@@thesavagefilmmaker external braw, and most cinema cameras don't want ibis or auto focus.
I thought SDI was the reason to get Cinema Cameras? I thought SDI was better than HDMI?
SDI is better, but having HDMI and SDI is best.
( deepends ofc on what you want from your camera because some mirorrless have different much needed features than the komodo , this is just an example)
Box is easier to rig , no arguing over that, but the price on a 3D printed accessory that does not do anything more than a regular D tap splitter , it does not have a voltage meter either like the good quality splitters is crazy.
If it were CNC machined, with a voltage meter built in and with a QR thst allows you to attach and deattach from the cage in seconds.. well that would be something.
Your pyxis with china rig just fotocamera
Not sure I follow you pal.
Just buy a Z Cam E2-F6 and you don’t need to do any of this
Does a z-cam have auto focus and IBIS? Nope.
You don't need autofocus
Did you take shots at Caleb for not having it in stock? 😂
This Is wild because Caleb actually started this cine back as a small business owner, and then major companies were more money decided to copy him and what he was doing because they seen how well it was doing.
So it’s cool to buy this, but to take shots at a small business owner, who actually paved away for these major companies is hilarious.
Definitely will be buying one, but without taking shots at somebody who clearly came up with the idea !
I think there is a narrative that Caleb came up with this concept. I think the reality is Caleb popularised this concept to RUclipsrs, but was not the first to create these. So I'm not losing any sleep over making note that the products are never in stock :D
I'll never join you! I'll never join the dark side!
Even if its better....
