This was meant to be a short 8-10 min "first impressions" vid - but as you can see I had a lot to say! Great review man - I just did one myself out in Zimbabwe for a practical first look. I didn't think about using the Cooke SP.3's on the L-mount, that's a lovely combo!
THANK YOU for being a grounded voice in this space brother. People are spending too much time complaining about cameras instead of looking at what purposes they serve. In the era where people make brands their identity, these objects are tools for a craft. There will never be the perfect camera because we all have different needs and everyone defines “perfect” differently.
Exactly, at the end of the day it's just a tool and most cameras made in the last 5 years are all great, we're spoilt for choice. I think this is why we now obsess over the smallest of details. I think it's also way easier to blame your tools for holding you back than take a hard look at your own work / skills. But yeah no camera is perfect, I'm cool with that. I actually really like this camera even though I have my Komodo, this cam still captures great images!
I just don’t understand this comment. You are all as RUclipsrs constantly talking about cameras and gear and perpetuate this gear head obsession that you then complain about. Also please stop saying that they are just tools and that there is no such things as a perfect camera. There absolutely is and good design would make it obvious to all. This ridiculous camera is a design abomination. The side screen is ridiculous. The perfect camera would have edge detection and menu interface of the Komodo or a red with amazing app control, the picture of a kinefinity or arri and at the very least a grip like the fx6 that can manipulate basic functionality without moving your hand from the grip like an arri master grip. It would have a global shutter 16 stops of dynamic range, image stabilisation and af etc etc etc. The perfect camera is obvious and all these functions already exist but why it isn’t made is another question that has more to do with the politics of capitalism and market competitiveness than camera technology or creative design. If you mean what you say please stop talking about gear and start talking about your work and that creative process.
What I always appreciated about you Ed is you are like a great chef. You don't just show us the raw ingredients that you got from the market, you also serve a complete dish. I want to know what can be done with the image, not only see the converted Rec 709 image. If I saw these images on a big cinema screen I would say that It's more film-like than most of the films shot today. Great review!
Haha thank you George! Always trying to figure out what gives the best value in these camera review vids and like you say a nice mix of REC.709 and the graded potential seems to be the way to go! Looking forward to exploring more grading options in future videos.
just picked this camera up this week - trying to figure out the right rigging setups for different scenarios, as well as getting used to a box style camera as I've been shooting on the S1H for years now. I felt the same way you did about Blackmagic cameras in the past, but always admired the colors from the sensors. For the price + rigging this feels like such a great path into a RAW workflow. As always, enjoy your reviews Ed!
I'm working on a rigging vid which will hopefully be out soon - I managed to get a decent setup using some existing bits and pieces I already have - but will also try test one of the cages available too.
This was meant to be a short 8-10 min "first impressions" vid - but as you can see I had a lot to say! I plan on doing a few more vids after more testing - looking at rigging, more in depth comparisons with Komodo & LUMIX cams & hopefully bring it out on a professional job - but this will give you all an intro to my initial thoughts on this camera!
@@EdProsser It would be a dream to compare it to the Ursa 12k because I hesitate between these models, but the comparison to Komodo and Lumix is also very good :)
Yeah I'm assuming that's what a lot of people will be thinking - so will be doing some more tests with my LUMIX cams in coming weeks - have just shot a BRAW comparison on the S5 IIX... stay tuned!
thanks man - yeah it's a nice option and probably works out a fair bit cheaper than the Komodo - I still think the image of the Komodo is superior - but the Pyxis does offer you an LF sensor with open gate and more physical buttons etc. Pyxis also just boots up faster and is a bit more responsive.
What an excellent review Ed, thank you. The image looks great for the price, and the gyro stabilisation is a super feature to have for sure. I'm so used to shooting with a side handle and top handle which trigger record, I now rather dislike working with cameras where I can't do that, regardless of how good the image is ha ha. Hopefully someone will create a solution.
I'm sure there are already solutions. BMD is a pretty open platform / company, I'm sure there are WiFi / Bluetooth accessories. I just need to do a bit of research! I do have a grip with start stop record via BT so I'll see if it works.
@ thanks Ed. I have a Kondor Blue trigger wing that I know works with some BM cams but the Pyxis is not yet on the list. Mind you I don't like that handle much, it's made for such small hands and the trigger button is tiny. I prefer wired/hard connections to Bluetooth etc tho. I often film in icy temps and snow, and if Bluetooth or WiFi goes flaky, I often can't get touch menus to reconnect 🥶
Good to know, I tried to attach my RED outrigger handle last night, it almost fit on the cage I have but there was a bit of wiggle / play, so it was a no go. Even if I had that as a "dumb" grip it'd have been amazing, it's the most comfortable grip I've ever used!
@ ah that's a shame. I have 2 RVLVR Clutch handles which seem to have been made for my hands 🙂 The fact they're wooden also really helps in the cold. But the cabling is lanc only.
As another note with regard to the Gyro stablization. Make sure to fill out the meta data page for the lens. That data can aid the software in handling of a given lens, and might help solve some of the issues.
Ed - Thanks for this review. Your observations always interest me as you always focus on what's important rather than gush and hype like some RUclips "influencers". I am quite happy with my "vintage" EVA1 and S1H, but I would like to work with BRAW files and a full frame camera with SDI port for first AC to pull focus. I get around NDs with a matte box on my S1H, but the lack of SDI port and the heavy latency on the HDMI port are limiting. So many of the test shots I've seen of the Pyxis impress me, and the price point is so reasonable. My gut tells me to wait and see if Panasonic releases a second version of the S1H. As you have shot with Panasonic EVA1 and S1H (my two cameras) I am curious to know if you think the Pyxis will offer a significant image quality boost for narrative work. Thanks again for your reviews!
I think it will although how much I'm uncertain about - the image definitely feels nicer than my LUMIX cams - I'm shooting some BRAW comparisons at the moment - the PYXIS image maybe has the edge... but it still feels like it has the same DNA / texture - of the LUMIX cams - if that makes sense? Like it doesn't feel like its a million miles away. I like the colour science of the PYXIS - I think the images come out looking great (as they do on the LUMIX cams) - but I find the LUMIX cams always maybe push a bit more warmer / magenta in the skin tones. I have no idea if / when the S1H will come out but I guess the PYXIS also offers a functional cine cam body which is also beneficial for shooting over mirrorless bodies. I'd assume the next batch of LUMIX cams would move away from using this sensor. In terms of the EVA1 - hmm my feeling is the Pyxis has the edge - but again would need to do more testing. There are elements of the EVA1 image which are still fantastic - particularly skin tones, obviously you gain advantages like open gate and having BRAW built into the camera as well as the option of cropping in to shoot in S35. I really wish LUMIX just stick the EVA1 sensor in a S9 style body - I think that would be a killer little camera!
@@EdProsser Thanks for your thoughts on this. I also wish Panasonic continued with their Cine cameras, but they obviously chose to focus on their LUMIX line instead.
I don’t know if you still have the Pyxis but my understanding is the second gain circuit is at ISO 1250 so that will give you the least noise over ISO 1000 and better than 3200, however 3200 is where you have most equal DR latitude in highlights/shadows there is a Blackmagic article on it somewhere. Likewise the lower base is 100 ISO but 400 gives most equal DR.
Exactly so it's up to you as the operator / DP how to capture the image, what you need to prioritise in it, very similar on my RED. I'd price baby recommend the 1250 if you have a darker scene, but you probably shouldn't be using the higher base ISOs to capture dark scenes.
Excellent!! …as always Ed! 😊 Given it’s got an OLPF, the images are startlingly sharp. I think that’s a positive one can work with. I think this camera feels like the S1H mkii that we’ve all been waiting for…but that really directs us towards Resolve and away from Premiere… which js an attractive proposition given the way Adobe behaves, which is the opinion of the US Dept of Justice and Federal Trade Commission. This is definitely interesting. Looking forward to the next episode Ed 😊
My thoughts exactly! Although I hope Panasonic pivot to a new sensor for whatever eventual S1H successor. From what I gather it's a diff OLPF in the PYXIS than the one on the S1H - so maybe it's less aggressive? Also bare in mind I'm also shooting on the Arles which are inherently sharp lenses - so I'm gonna stick some diff glass on it in the coming weeks and see how it looks... but yes overall I think it is just a sensor that pushes a sharper image as it seems consistent with the image from the LUMIX cams as well. The Komodo, while still sharp, just seems to have a more pleasing "organic" softness to it without sacrificing detail.
It's definitely personal preference, for the money I think they're a great option, I'd be happy to shoot a project on them, they definitely have an interesting look, but you gotta be on board with some of their shortcomings.
Great video! Your model always makes you look good, she has such a cinematic face with great features. I agree with you on the Pyxis. It’s a nice camera, but the image is missing texture. It has like a glowing mushiness that I just can’t pin down exactly what it is. I had the 6K full frame older model when it came out about a year ago and found that I actually preferred the image out of my FX3 and FX6 cameras. I felt like even with the Sony compressed internal codecs, they had a little more texture than the 6K full frame. I wish the camera was able to record ProRes internal and maybe even DNG like the original pocket 4K did at first. I used to have the pocket 6K for years and love the image, but I actually preferred the prores image because I felt like it had more texture. I mean, let’s face it. Black magic raw isn’t true raw, even Grant Petty the owner of blackMagic said that the image is partially demosaiced and then it’s compressed. So you don’t really have a true sensor level raw. The Pyxis is a nice camera, and I think it gives a nice image. But for me, it ain’t worth giving up the Sony’s or the red Komodo for it.
Just to point out a small detail. RED cameras by default use highlight recovery as part of the sensors dynamic range, and one can't turn it off. So while one gains all the benefits of it when it's working well, one can also suffer from it if it doesn't work in a given shot. With the Blackmagic cameras one can enable this in post, but there is no way to preview it in the field. The result is that most of the time one only see's it's potential benefit in post.
Thanks Billy - yeah you're completely right - another commenter pointed this out - I'll be doing a more in depth vid between Pyxis and Komodo so I'll be sure to "highlight" that fact!
I don't think I would be able to quantify something like that 😂. Perhaps once I've gotten into some side by side footage comparisons in the coming weeks I can give a better answer. Anecdotally the Komodo is a high bar, I think it's one of, if not the best looking cameras in the sub £10k bracket. But it isn't always the easiest camera to work with and the PYXIS has a great image for it's price bracket and a lot of features the Komodo lacks.
Looking back what camera do you use the most, what would you buy again? Eg vs your LUMIX or RED videos. Thanks a lot for your great channel and opinions.
I use all of my cams regularly, different jobs need diff things - as well as what I need to get my stuff done on RUclips. I don't really have any regrets on the cameras I own as they generally all serve a purpose. There's an argument that I could sell some of my older cams like the EVA1 or S5 - but I still bring them out on shoots! In a sense they're worth more than the sale price of those cams and still generating revenue. My RED is my primary workhorse production camera for client work - but I also regularly pair it up with my S5 iix, S5 or EVA1 to supplement it. I still use my EVA1 if I have to send rushes quickly online after the shoot and still need a compact cine-style camera. For smaller shoots, maybe if I'm travelling or it's low cost social media work I would take out my S5 IIX. If I don't need AF I'd bring the S5 mark 1. My LUMIX cams are also used continuously for my RUclips work - my S5 iiX shoots all my a-roll piece to camera material, as well as BTS and general product b-roll. If I'm travelling I'd probably also opt to bring the S5 over my RED.
@@EdProsser Wow, thanks so much for taking the time and your in-depth reflection. Much appreciated. You're one of my favorite channels anyways, now even more so! :)
Cool. Please tell me if I can use a third-party external monitor and write to an external SSD at the same time? (Or maybe the original bm monitor + ssd recording)I know that with the regular version of full-frame black magic, this is not possible. But maybe a feature has been added?
Yes of course, you can connect any monitor that supports SDI. The camera also allows recording direct to SSD via USB. Separate connections. There's a front USB for EVF / Monitors and at the back you have USB for data and SDI for third party monitors.
The one thing that surprises me about this camera is that it has 3/4 of a stop less dynamic range than the lumix S5IIX according to CINED’s testing while having essentially the same sensor…..but I guess the B raw highlight recovery helps with that.
I don't know if they're comparing it to the internal S5iix recording, I assume so, but it's probably something to do with the fact that the LUMIX has more internal image processing on the camera side such as noise reduction etc... whereas the PYXIS does not have that with BRAW so that burden is on the user to apply their own denoising etc.
Great video! Although I agree with you that the Komodo has a certain texture over the pyxis , sometimes it could be a bad thing. The Komodo texture can be filmic, however, on skin, I’ve noticed that the red Komodo accentuates skin texture and poor skin more than any other camera I’ve ever seen in my life. It’s weird. I don’t know it makes people skin look bad. This is where the Alexa really shines. I know it’s a way more expensive camera, but it has magic and the way it render skin.
you should really do a review of the zcam, either the F6 pro or the upcoming F6/S6 mak ii. Same sensor but formfactor is so much better than BM and with a Rvlvr handle it's almost like using a mirorless but with a cube. Best of both world.
It's an impressive bit of camera for the price (minus all the rigging), i think for me i wouldn't go for a bigger cinema style camera without getting internal ND as that's my biggest gripe with using mirrorless. I look forward to the Blackmagic Design PYXIS *Pro* with ND
haha yeah I can see them releasing that. Honestly shot on my Komodo for nearly 3 years without internal ND and it hasn't really bothered me. I use good quality VNDs when I'm in a hurry and have a few mattebox solutions for when I have larger crew / more resources.
Yeah I think this is what I said, BMD rates the camera at 3200 for it's high base, which is where you'll get maximum highlight range above middle grey at cost of shadows range (which is why you see noise). In high exposure scenarios 3200 should give more range in the highlights than 1250 which seems to play out with my limited testing. You generally should not be using this higher ISO base / range to shoot low light scenes. But if you are in a pinch and need the signal boost in poor exposure scenarios, and you need to preserve shadows detail, shooting in 1250 will give better results.
Good review. I feel the issue with rolling shutter isn’t so much that viewers will complain about it being rolling shutter. It’s more that the motion will make them nauseous and they wont actually realize why it makes them feel this way… and they might just associate this negative feeling with the creator… and that might be a issue.
Yeah I don't know, I think about this a lot. I don't think it'd be nautia inducing, no reason why fast motion on a global shutter cam wouldn't be equally nauseating. I think if you're engaged and watching average movement / motion and / or your using the gyro stabilisation features it's less of an issue for me than I thought it would be.

Stay away from cheaper batteries for Blackmagic cameras period. I had to spend $500 on internal replacement parts for a BMPCC 4k from using cheaper batteries.
The front USB-C is a 1080p wired output with 2 way OS control (Pyxis monitor only). The SDI/BNC signal out of the back of the camera, to record up to 4K on the VA in ProRes or BRAW. The USB-C on the back of the camera is up to 6K wired data output for SSD recording, and a wired output for "Cell Phone to Cloud 1080p Proxies or Streaming" (depends on 'phone) with free app and storage. Over-all, there is also a iPhone and Android Remote "Camera Control" app via Bluetooth - $17 (OS menu only, no visuals). The LAN is the fastest transfer method (no expensive CFexpressB Card Reader needed). Laptop, Network Scan, Browser, Copy and Paste. $5 CAT cable. LAN Cloud and Livestream too.
I need to know who is this woman that has been sacrificing herself for the last decade to test out cameras. I bought my Sony fs7 in 2014 based on images of her. Like how does everyone continue to use her?
It's a Sony made sensor in the PYXIS and BMCC6K. Same sensor that's in the LUMIX full frame cams, Mavo LF and a bunch of other cameras. IMX 410 sensor.

Do you still have the BS1H? How do the images compare to Pyxis?
You are my favourite Ed.
Don't make me blush
Great Review!!
Regarding highlight recovery: RED has highlight recovery always on when you use IPP2 as color science.
Very interesting - just looked this up and yeah cool to know now they also use algorithmic highlight recovery ! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing
In terms of image quality and feel, is the Komodo (OG or X) more than twice better than PYXIS ? due to the price difference
Great review , thank you 😊
You’re welcome 😊
@yeah….thats probably It…..s5IIX was shooting vlog and PYXIS WAS SHOOTING BRAW…..
Please can you do a review on the ronin 4d?
I am sooooo desperate to try that camera out! Have even hoovered over buying one... It's definitely on my radar.
@@EdProsser hopefully one day!
I've not noticed the Komodo making skin look bad, I find it's the opposite!
you should really do a review of the zcam, either the F6 pro or the upcoming F6/S6 mak ii. Same sensor but formfactor is so much better than BM and with a Rvlvr handle it's almost like using a mirorless but with a cube. Best of both world.
nice always wanted to try a z-cam but don't come across them often!
You shot this in Turin! That's where I live :D
Yes! We go a lot!
Did you use peaking or colored lines?
Initially coloured lines, changed over to try peaking now as I think it seems more accurate.
Clean "High" Base Iso is 1250
Yeah I think this is what I said, BMD rates the camera at 3200 for it's high base, which is where you'll get maximum highlight range above middle grey at cost of shadows range (which is why you see noise).
I want the Italian version 😂
You can tell this camera was designed in the Southern Hemisphere because the lens mounts upside down.
The Pyxis 6K does not come with a battery, but it should come with a 60W power supply with locking connector.
It does, but it's not super useful for using the camera on shoots.
She's the best camera test model in the game, very expensive but worth it.
@ oh makes sense. I’m in the USA so I’ll probably never use her but I’m curious how much the best test model in the game charges?
7:13 this flare looking bad. This is optical coma or something
Not sure what optical coma is? I quite like the flare - lot of wide angles will have flaring like this.
Blackmagic don't use Sony image sensors. Blackmagic use Onsemi image sensors.
It's a Sony made sensor in the PYXIS and BMCC6K. Same sensor that's in the LUMIX full frame cams, Mavo LF and a bunch of other cameras. IMX 410 sensor.
I don’t get one thing, this woman appears in all videos and reviews made for this camera. Same woman in all the videos from different creators.
Hahaha I hope not, she's my partner, show me which ones!
@@EdProsser I may be wrong, but she seams so familiar. Maybe there footage you shot, but used by others
Maybe you've just watched too many of my videos 🤣
@ that could also be why 😂😂😂 , however mate keep up the good work.
I think Matteo Bertoli the creator of Buttery Luts, also do testing with his partner, and they have a slight resemblance. ¿Maybe is that?
