HJP's Defender Patrol • Amazingly Great Upcoming Indie Flight Sim

- I've been following development of Hijong Park's retro inspired helo flight sim starring MD-530 Defender light scout helo for some time now. Recently mr Park released his prototype to the public so I had to try it out and oh boy it's so much fun. The graphics remind me of Digital Integration's Apache/Hind, but the game had inspirations from many other helo flight sims from the golden era.
I've tried the 'default' (realistic) fkight model in free flight and it's pretty impressive as it models helicopter nuances quite realistically, but for a combat sortie I opted for 'arcade' flight model which is a bit more stable and doesn't require you to constantly work you tail rotor. Until I can operate the sight and weapons systems well I will stick with the simpler one for now.
There are 3 mission combat types - Ground Support, Seek and Destroy, Air Patrol and non-combat Free Flight. Missions are randomly generated in sense of target types/postions as well terrain - you can define from 3 types of terrain - flat, default and hilly.
Defender cockpit is fully interactable, you can flip switches and press buttons, though the complexity is on VTOL VR level not DCS so it's easy to get into. The helo features rotor mounted sight for spotting targets and guiding TOWs. There is a wide assortment of gun pods of varying calibre, grenade launcher, unguided rocket pods and BGM-71 wire-guided TOW missiles.
You can fly with AI wingman, which are quite capable, with pretty good thought out wingman command system through radio channels (and quick hot keys, so familiarize yourself with the controls!). Enemy / friendly unit's AI seems to work properly, ground untis can engage each other in ground combat which lools pretty cool.
I highly recommend to give the game a whirl - you can grab it here:

Just make sure to take a peek into included manual and set up you controls before you go flying.

Missed this stream. Game looks really good!
Oooh a new toy! I'm loving this minimalist old school look combined with believable physics...thanks for bringing this to my attention.
Nice... Thanks for the heads up.
Same like the Tiny Combat Arena just with helos.
i thought same thimg
It's ok, Tiny is another great game.
This guy used to make awesome helicopter mods for Ravenfield! Awesome to see his progress.
poor wingmen, the Shilkas look absolutely lethal! 😨
This reminds me of the demos that used to ship with the Silicon Graphics workstations in the 90s 😀Very promising!
Strong Eagle Dynamics vibe
Looks like the Hind or the Apache Game from DI.😅
Pretty much yes, especially those versions on F-16FF engine with improved ground textures.
Actually those DI games were masterpieces and still are. This on the other hand looks like a toy pseudo retro project.
@@spearPYN Well yeah, it's not a finished product. You have to start somewhere and this is a good start.
Closer to A-10 Cuba! I'd say (especially the physics) but yeah.
@@spearPYN I have spent a year learning aerodynamics of helicopters and unity, now it's time to spent several years learning graphics so that my game would look way better in late MS-DOS style.
Nice game. Reminds me of TOMAHAWK on ZX Spectrum.
Does it have VR support?
No VR (yet?) though it supports Track IR.
VR is my dream feature but needs many study to introduce in my game.
I think making solid game should come first before adding VR, so I had been delaying it.
Bought!
I dont get the calibration procedure. Some kind of a default profile for a joystick would be very helpful.
There are so many joysticks in the world that I can't grasp on making profiles for my game yet.
But at least I'll buy a xbox controller and make profile for it, maybe the profile for my VKB NXT joysticks too.
@@phj9894 Yes, you are right, there are a lot of sticks. The game does "see" my Joystick (Saitek Cyborg EVO, an old one). It ist the calibration menu on the right with all those many, many axis that i dont get or understand when i try to calibrate manually. Some kind of a standard routine which guides step by step me through all axises would be nice. I really would like to buy and play the game :).
@@robertojadicke if you assign desired axes to the keybinds first and then enter calibration, you'll be able to distinguish binded axes as the axis displayer will react to your input.
@@phj9894 Thanks for the tip, wil try it that way.
Interesting. And flying the Little Bird too.
I was hungry for any flight sim featuring little bird other than battlefield, arma, war thinder.
I got tired waiting and just made one.
That can be played on mobile? i wish Yes.
It's for PC.
