Damn, the Empire doesn't mess around. They've got the heaviest armor coupled with devestating Pila and very fashionable pointy hats. Simply glorious.

@@babaeren62 That's a good observation! The helmets the Empire use are Byzantine but the Ottomans ultimately conquered the Byzantine empire. Byzantine blacksmiths simply started working for the Turkish beyliks. It's for this very reason Turkish baths are so beautiful. Roman ideas and designs made their way into the cultures of the empires that came after them.
@@babaeren62 the imperial helmet has other sources as well mostly artistic sources showing high fluted helmets we also have pointed top kettle helms

All other infantry: We have throwing weapons to soften up the enemy lines before we enter melee in order to increase the odds of a favorable engagement

considering how nobody used shield wall the 2 handers still did well. if they bothered with shields the throwing would barely kill a few troops.

The Vlandians had to decide, Cape or Throwing Weapon. And they chose the right one.
They easily look the coolest of any heavy infantry, the cape is badass

actually i tried myself. if you just blindly f1 f3 charge. the vlandia is gonna lose because they couldn't recover from the massive death from throwing projectile.
i've put both empire legion against vlandia sgt in siege or open field (shield wall formation). vlandia is better.
do villagers from every faction that would be a glorious peasent fight maybe even worth getting some popcorn.

I think we all love sturgia and wish their infantry was properly strong.
However I think they are only truly the strongest vs Calvary. ☹️
Idk man I never have a problem with shock troops holding my lines. My opinion I think sturgias infantry is number 2. But they make the best shield wall in game fore sure.

They have the best shield wall and they destroy in drawn out battles, they got buffed in 1.4.1 and are a lot better now
Edit: While sturgia did get buffed in 1.4.1, Empire also got a buff in that legionaries throw their pila, which is why Sturgia is losing
Roo Jackaroo they do have the best shield wall, if all the units were shield wall charged sturg would have won.

To be a better judge of the best units each faction would be best to fight each other faction. Your competition only pits each faction against a few of the others. Seeing them all fight each would be cool!

The Legionaries not only have Pilum and superior armor, but also maces are more common which have great armor piercing ability

Great video. I think you did a good job making this as fair as possible. It is really sad to see my favorite faction (battania) and the sturgians perform so poorly. The sturgians are really in need of a buff to their melee troops (and everything for that matter). Both the sturgians and battanians have garbage cav., so they really should get buffed infantry to counter that. BTW I think it would have been interesting if you had continued the video to show which faction's infantry was the worst. Maybe in the next faction competition you could show best and worst. Thanks for the awesome upload.

I'm going to stop training imperial archers and battianian wildlings and get more legionnaires!
For a sequel I'd propose this:
Fight different forces against 200 legionnaires, scoring points for every kill minus every lose (over two battles). Viewers can propose mixed infantry armies of 200 and you can pick or have a poll. I'd use 100 shield infantry of each faction plus whatever infantry complements these best. Like Vlandian Sergeants with Khuzait Darkhans or any other combo people wanna see. People can test for themselves and propose solid combos of tanky shields, damage dealing two handed and/or throwing infantry and mention their average points over many battles so you can pick the best contestants.
Some armies will fail but most suggestions will win twice. One will score most points, the champion mix for next video perhaps?
p.s. keep commanders out of the battle, so their death and morale loss doesn't affect the battle as a random factor. Otherwise, well done!
Btw, did you give command to form a shield wall for both armies? I thought they didn't use shields well unless you tell them to.

Have played through this game as an Empire faction and it was almost too easy during battles once you've got a large chunk of legionnaires. Recently started a new playthrough as Battania and honestly, couldn't win any significant battles. Switched to Sturgia and had the exact same problem....these factions just get completely bowled over. Still a lot of balancing to do in this game!
What I want to know is what kind of Banner Mods are you using?? Those are some dope Banner Designs!!

One last thing.. If the vollandians weren't morons and charged with shields up surely they'd do better (shields to block the javelins)

They were renamed, is your game modded? If so, they were once called called the Battanian Trained Spearman.
Was anyone surprised the Vlandians and Empire were the top two?
Most heavily armored, highest melee skill, good shields.
In the unmodded game it's not like this result at all. Legionary have no thrown weapons, so they take losses in the charge. While other troops with thrown weapons, they should be holding the line and not charge in, this gives them more time to throw the 2nd or 3rd volley before melee contact. In fact, Wildings and Darkhan are the best line infantry when used correctly (hold the line, throw javs at enemies then fight after enemy is nearly all dead).
Vlandian's infantry are pretty badass, considering how far and how well they did with a huge disadvantage of not having throwing weapons to get a lot of damage at the start of each battle. I would say that fact alone means they are pretty swole in general.
Infantry aside Bannerknights have insane one handed but you notice the obvious difference when they are on foot during sieges. They just butcher everybody even when they are in small numbers. They have Fian Champion effect when they fight on foot against regular infantry. Druzhinnik Champions are on par with Bannerknights in terms of stats but i did not try them on foot.
Haha the disclaimer alone would have been enough for a sub but the whole video was great.
Lots of comments talk about the disadvantages of Vladians not having projectiles. But take a look when the front line makes contact: second line of Vladians swith to two-handed weapons that can effectively reach to the enemies while the second line of their opponents can't hit anything. So basically the Vladians are having a lot more dps in close combat. You can try using polearms/ two-handed weapons in an infantry line yourself and you would realize how you can hit enemy front liners that you cannot otherwise hit with one-handed weapons.
and then you realize most battles will have archers, vlandians' strong point is the cavalry

Since when do Legionaries have javelins? In the normal unmodded game they have no throwing weapon!
It was a bug which they fixed they have only 1 pila though and if they throw it no other spear for horses.
Since patch 1.4 the Pila that they always have had is a thrown weapon. It has not been before.
Pila have always been throwing weapons, AI just hardly did it and you had to toggle it with x or something. You can do the same thing to use a Javelin as a spear.

My perfect army with no special troops for beta.
Infantry- vlandian sergeants, the reason I'd pick them over empire is because spears will wreck cav In a charge. If you're not up against a cav charge their shield wall is superior to protect your archers. They're basically op. shock and heavy infantry value units.
Archers- imperial Palatine guards, they have 160 bow plus heavy armor and decent melee defense if need be.
Horse Archer- obviously khuzait heavy horse Archers.
Cavalry- this is the one that's really up in the air as the khuzait, vlandians and aserai are all pretty good. Personal preference as a warband player would be vlandia.

This proves to me exactly what I felt playing the game. The Vlandian Sergeant is actually the best basic infantry for melee combat. They still won most of their battles and don't have a throwing weapon at all compared to EVERYONE else. Issuing a shield wall command is going to largely negate that huge advantage everyone else got over them. And who cares that they don't have a throwing weapon because you just bring Vlandian Sharpshooters with you to do all the shooting. None of this jack-of-all-trades bullshit. Specialize. :P

I feel like the reason why the vlandians battle is always so random is due to the randomness of two handed weapons. Sometimes u onehit an enemy sometimes u deal 3 dmg.

0:32 and that is why we need female fighters. There is a mod to make recruits mixed genders... maybe they will just implement it at some point? M&B had a whole faction of just female fighters, and they were actually pretty good. The only crazy thing about them is the devs never gave them a cheer voice, so after a battle was won they cheered, but there was no sound.

Great video, but you need to work on your battle tree's and you should show what the infantry are loaded up with. Like armour and weapon set ups. Love your videos devoted sub here.
Also mate, if you use troops with throwing weapons you never charge them. Hold the line let enemy inf charge and eat 2 or 3 volley of thrown weapon. If you charge, they only get 1 volley off before contact. Wildings in this case, would have won if they hold and throw at the charging enemy. And its important to point out, Legionary do not spawn with throwing weapons in the unmodded game, so they would have lost.
what are the pros and cons of oathsworn and wildings? and why not use ALL different infantry types instead of which players usually choose? there might be an underdog that we don't know of, or maybe there isn't idk.
Tbh legionnaires they are so easy to get in massive quantities and can be butchers on the battle field but hey are low level and week ish troops it’s just they are plentiful tbh I have several garrisons full of them and of Bian Champion archers
That may be the best unit against other infantry. There may be other infantry better suited for fighting against cavalry or lighter faster unit best suited to rush and kill enemy archers during seiges. Idk i havent done any testing but other units seem like they could do certain jobs better than the legionaries.

Honestly I never see the scene like this before in my battle... I normally charge ahead myself and leave them behind...
If the Battanians didn't charge they could have twice as many volleys, turning the battle in their favor everytime before the battle truly starts. They suck in melee still.

I've played a lot of Vlandia and I've found you can negate the inability to skirmish with their superior shield wall so the skirmishing wouldn't have decimated them as much. It's a shame you didn't use commands in this or else Vlandia would've steamrolled. Legion win was expected regardless tho. Those guys are intense.
