Especially with everything that happened in that Arc. That Arc was nearly the end of the Strawhats because of how much they had been fighting and divided. Luffy's win was for their survival, not just to beat the big bad
This might make no sense and I haven't watched the video yet, but to me Luffy vs kaido felt like a narrative clash over a fight fight. When I think of a fight fight, I think of Luffy vs Lucci. We see Luffy struggling to stand and coughing up blood. It's a total grinder. Luffy is evidently still tired after other fights like doflamingo and kaido, but the emphasis on Luffy's struggle makes Lucci and katakuri fights more vivid to me personally.
I always believed that what spurred Luffy in that fight was Ussop's promise of "We're going home together" Without the assurance of Ussop being there after the fight i dont think Luffy would have been able to go beyond his limits
@@username-ql8ox as morj mentioned in the video, it's pretty ballsy that usopp basically threatened to get killed by Lucci if Luffy didn't stand up. I just reread the chapters and it's soo gooddd
Luffy Vs Lucci felt like it had the most emotion behind it . Luffy (snake man) vs Katakuri had the best fight choreography . Luffy Vs Kaido had the craziest feats from both .
@@johnk8581 Mid. Several shots Luffy landed were thanks to Law. Not to mention the whole town had to cover for Luffy after he exhausted himself from Gear 4. Idk if that was even a top 5 fight
I've really been struggling to figure out why I enjoyed Luffy vs Katakuri a lot more than Luffy vs Kaido. This video does a really good job of helping me articulate my feelings on the issue.
If luffy vs kaido will be well directed and well animated mixed with fitting dramatic OST and not just slapping some random themes that doesn't even fit the fight, it'll reach top 5 IMO I mean episode 1015 made chapter 1000 look like a comic strip from my dad's newspaper and this is coming from a guy who loves the manga 🗿
Because it was better. Choreography makes a fight. Kaido vs luffy was just two unskilled brutes gong at it. Boring. Oda is not Kishimoto who is the goat when it comes to choregraphing fights because he is a nerd by Oda admittance when it comes to animation.
The snap-back kick Luffy landed on Kaido in chapter 1037 is one of my favorite bits of choreography in the series. The way he lets his leg linger back as he dodges the thunder bagua, then holds onto Kaido's club as he releases it for a devastating blow to the face is one of the most cash money things Luffy's ever done.
It was a completely insane kick, because if you remember Luffy's Hawk Stamp in chapter 879 against Katakuri? A gear 2 kick which made a hole into a concrete wall.. Which in itself is really powerful already. But the one in 1037 was a Gear 3 Ryou and ACoC infused high-speed cannon kick.. Crazy powerful since even Kaido's eyes went white for a second.
I love how Morj went out of his way to make an extremely positive video just to secretly show that this Kaido vs Luffy conclusion was anti-climatic! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 You’re very clever my friend.
@@africanoblackaldo1569 Agreed. I was in awe of what a fearsome and resourceful combatant Usopp can be when he really tries. I respect non-powered characters like Usopp that can hold their own (albeit briefly but still) in a world of powere super powered monsters like Luffy, Lucci, or Kaido.
Mr Morj, I just want to say thank you for your hard work. You made my enjoyment of One Piece story much greater than before, with all your analysis and theories regarding the story. Definitely my favorite One Piece RUclipsr, and will always stay like that! Keep up the hard work!
Yeah...unfortunately nothing can touch that fight with Lucci, though I'm sure Oda is well aware. I have high hopes for Luffy vs Black Beard, as that will actually have some emotional weight behind it.
You bet. Ever since Oda gave us a drawing of Blackbeard as a kid crying and looking up to the moon i knew the day we will see his flashback and his upcoming will be top tier level.
Lucci was Luffy's biggest pre-TimeSkip challenge, both physically and ideologically. While Luffy is the greatest representation of Freedom, Lucci is the greatest representation of Control and Obedience, because for him all that matters is "Justice", regardless of the methods or consequences.
Is justice not simply an excuse for Lucci that allows him to satisfy his bloodlust? Akainu is more akin to what you are describing when it comes to justice imo.
"Justice" is not what matters to Lucci, you don't know that character at all. His sharp and cool attitude which made him a cool villain makes allot of people forget that He's a dog through and through, who wags his tail to whoever is in power.
@@truffle6082 Akainu is nothing like Lucci. Akainu would rather he himself dictate how things go and be the leader, would even talk trash to Gorosei and about the Celestial Dragons. Lucci doesn't raise his voice cause he has none, he doesn't go against the leading power, he's the government's dog.
I think the biggest problem with this fight was that it kept stopping and starting over again, so you couldnt really feel the tension or buildup. Since each time they fought it was more like a tiny minnie battle, you couldnt really hold your breath as we were kind kept waiting for the real battle y'know. Also not once were the SH pushed against the wall, they all won their fights fairly easily which was pretty boring.
@@ImAviex exactly, the only person u can even argue had it easy was franky and thats because general franky took all the damage and eventually got destroyed while franky was still relatively fine.
The part of the Lucci fight I love so much more, is when the Marines were hyping up how strong Lucci was, then to see him just swagger off the ship just cemented the authority and general aura Lucci gives off.
I think that Luffy having fun and enjoying the fight is meant to show us that he's no longer a rookie fighting for his survival, instead he's like Roger or Whitebeard who always felt in control of the situation no matter how dire like the battle of Edd war, even though Roger was completely out gunned and about to lose he never stopped smiling.
I thought the same thing like Luffy is finally able to go toe to toe with a yonko he can’t help but be thrilled just like kaido since he finally got a good matchup after all this time
@AndrewWithEase11 11 how does having our main character reaching the point in the story where they can finally take full control of any situation make everything not matter? This is literally just character growth and Luffy growing into the person he always said he’ll be
@AndrewWithEase11 11 so it's gonna be a cakewalk for Luffy to fight the admirals? What about Blackbeard, Imu, the Gorosei, hell he's probably got a fight with Shanks on the horizon in Elbaf, are all of those gonna be cakewalks? Just because Luffy's hit his ceiling doesn't mean there's nowhere for the story to go, same thing with avatar they literally have comics that continue the storyline after season 3. The only thing that changes is now all your characters abilities are out in the open, so now it's all about how you utilize them in unique/interesting ways
@@djthellol2400 that would make sense if he didn't just face Katakuri who was exactly the type of "good matchup" that would challenge him that you're talking about and they even had mutual respect for each other yet he was far less jovial and happy then. It's not like he hasn't had difficult opponents he had to push himself against for months before now.
Honestly I feel like big mom vs Kidd & Law was one of the best fights of the series. From slightly unexpected, the flashy devil fruit use, the dialogue of big mom daring them to try and take her crown among the top. It was also just cool to see different characters get a full fight that weren’t straw hats
Honestly, I think The 2 Yonkou vs 5 Worst Generation was the best fight in One Piece. 1000-1003 and 1009-1011 were the most enjoyable chapters in Onigashima. Even though Gear 5 was more hype, I reread Roof Piece more than Gear 5.
Luffy v Katakuri when it was animated blew me away... a lot of visual storytelling. It was the best fighting we've seen out of Luffy and Kat being so solidly above him combat-wise gave it strong context. Just seeing Luffy go the distance step by step and close the gap ducking and dodging on the knife's edge was honestly a little personally inspiring. I still think about the fight fairly often
my problem with the Luffy vs Kaido fight is that the fight felt like it was just about Luffy and if he was going to reach yonkou level of power and Kaido was just a measurement stick for him, while the other fights felt like were a clash of beliefs, personality and desires between Luffy and their opponent, at the same time Kaido was more interested in just knowing if Luffy was Joyboy or not, rather than actually defeating him . at the end, Kaido feels just like a generic boss with tons of HP rather than the proper final Boss for this arc than he should, thats why the climax didnt hit as it should. Also , i cant invest myself into Luffy liberating another country for another weak royalty, in contrast with the personal quest of rescuing Robin or even saving Sanji
Even if he was just a yardstick. There could have been a larger personal consequence or emotional weight to that yardstick had Oda hyped up the consequences of Luffy losing (like setting up the crew getting seperated again, all of them failing in their dreams, etc). Instead Oda seemed more concerned with the emotional weight of the Wano characters, characters that we clearly weren't as invested in as he was. And characters who he couldn't have be present for the end of the fight because it would have caused to much ruchas in the world with Luffy basically being joyboy now.
@@edivaldonunes3386 i think oda himself got way too hyped about this arc, maybe because it is "japan" (like we haven't see "japan" portrayed in every anime ever) and started to implement too much into the story and things got bloated and he had to wrapped it up before finishing what he wanted to do, thats why some of the end chapters feel rushed. I think that the scabbards should've been the ones to deal the final blow on kaido, that would've been a much better conclusion that Luffy throwing a big punch (something Oda himself said thats not how the fight would end btw)
The tone one to me is absolutely subjective, probably the most subjective. Some people want that serious, deathly, edgy fight, but for me, Luffy vs Kaido was two guys who truly believe they are the strongest, enjoying each other's rivalry, but simultaneously going for each other's necks. It being all over the place with Gear 5 and Kaido's drunken states had me hype, laughing, serious, impressed and a whole other range of feelings that I have never felt before in a one piece fight. It was like I was watching an Usopp fight, Sanji fight, and Zoro fight all wrapped up in one. I LOVED it
It was a wow moment when Luffy punched the lights out of Lucci. It`s one of the best fights for me too. I just wish the Kaido fight coulld resonate, but it has been all over the place, the stakes are low, people keep coming back to life and the Wano citzens did not actively participate. Im ok with the Wano ark takng time as long as the story is intact. Even Big Mom is overshadowed, even though she is a yonko.
Big Mom was definitely not overshadowed... Her fight against Law and Kidd was absolutely insane. Crazy powers and feats being thrown around, symbolism and meaning being an important aspect of the fight, as well as Big Mom's final defeat being very climactic. I'd argue her defeat is superior to Kaido's
I love seeing people start criticizing a story that isn't even over. But it's definitely one or even the most beautiful location with great side characters, great themes, and memorable moments combined with the great animation and music from the anime and unique Japanese-inspired art in the manga. it's just far from boring without it not being completed it's the best arc in the series, the straw hats are back together the super novas are back too, and it's kind of a parallel to marineford saga that being luffys lowest point and the yonko saga being his highest point with him finally becoming a great pirate after losing his crew and brother. thats why you see him already getting over losing ace early on when tama ask luffy about him. all im going to say is when one piece ends people will come back and miss the masterpiece that is wano
@@waynicliz Saying Wano isn't finished is not an argument to people that are not enjoying it already. Also, when you say It is the best arc you are also making a critique of it without it being finished, bro.
If this is the conclusion, then One Piece fans gassed that arc up because with 0 consequences for the allied forces in a great war, it's awfully average. The power scaling was respected, but I can't believe that the strongest creature dies like that
I don't think they're underrated just because other fights are better. I don't think anyone here thinks they're bad or haven't aged well, it's just vs Lucci, Katakuri and Kaido are better. Period.
I agree, Luffy vs Crocodile is probably my fav or 2nd fav. or at least above the Lucci fight. It has almost same level of emotional impact as Luffy vs Lucci but Luffy has to overcome a bigger difference of strength. And it was also the fight where Luffy's will was what made difference as Croc was getting tired of Luffy's will to come back
I very much liked the parallels we were getting between luffy and Kaido over time. 1. Mythical zoan fruit. 2. Younger kaido seeming much happier and being a glutton in his youth like luffy 3. Their connection to Joyboy. 4. Both want to be the king of the pirates. 5. They both hate the government.
That's exactly my issue with it. If they don't want to go into Rocks this Arc, then I hope they at least flesh out Kaido's backstory more so we understand him better, otherwise he just seems like a hypocritical evil dude
@@josesosa3337 OOOH and you have all the grifters who were former pirate captains in search of the one piece! It’s showing where Luffy could have ended up if he lost his optimism and drive to be king.
Luffy vs lucci by far the best, doflamingo and croc prob 2nd and 3rd in some order. Luffy vs kaido was completely killed by the lack of tension in the arc, it was so underwhelming with the lack of consequences, im starting to doubt Pedros death in the previous arc.
@@Cless no you don't, it's never been that way what we're the consequences the strawhats faced in dressrosa? in skypeia? in Alabasta? in whole cake island? most if not all the consequences in the series is reflected in how the world changes after the strawhats visit an island not the strawahats and friends suffering consequences as they leave
Well elaborated video, I think you hit the spot on whats actually the issue with the conclusion. Its so mind blowing how the flashback reduced the impact of the final blow by literally 50% if not more.
Morj: I can go read chapter 427 just in isolation and still get teary eyes everytime. me: *reads chapter 427* also me: **gets teary eyes** Really made me believe that Luffy vs Kaido is not yet finished. There is much more to come and I am sure of it.
@@gerloopp724 only the manga itself can confirm that, depending on what happens next. Also, don't give me that "shonen jump said it" bs, what was the alternative? Did anyone expected the magazine to just spoil a plot twist to the reader if it were to happen? Of course it would say it is done.

I just had to stop at about the 5 minute mark cuz you mentioned tone winning for the Lucci fight. And I completely agree. I know it's forever ago, but people have to remember Enies lobby was around the height of the big three era of shonen jump. Lucci versus Luffy for many, is a fight that not only got people into one piece but also proved it wasn't just some goofy pirate manga and can stand toe to toe next to the best battle manga. Lucci May have lacked character-wise as a villain, but as a physical obstacle Oda nailed it.
The fights has to be viewed in the context they happened in. Luffy vs Lucci resulted from efforts to save his own nakama, and also that of Katakuri. Luffy's fight with Kaido was from the result of a raid. Hence the dynamics won't even be similar in the first place.
So that’s why I didn’t feel Kaido’s defeat. While Gear 5 and Luffy’s attitude have created a new found enjoyment of one piece, I guess we were missing the tension that made best fights in the first place….

I reread chapter 1037 the gorosei stuff really took over what was probably the best choreographed chapter of luffy vs kaido. There was buildup and power in every hit and you felt the impact. the art was great too. Seriously I think 1037 might be the best chapter of the kaido luffy fight. insanely clean
I feel like Luffy vs Kaido served more as a testament to the power of a Yonko and a reality check for what the end game of One Piece will look like. We kinda saw that from Big Mom in WCI, but this was the true showcasing of what they're capable of. On the other hand, Luffy vs Kata mainly served as a battle where Luffy was forced to improve his abilities if he really wanted to become the PK. And while both of those aspects from those fights are incredibly important, the meaning of Luffy vs Lucci surpasses those aspects and really leaned into the story as a whole. Sacrifice, friendship, leadership, rebelling against the system, reliance on others, all of these are core themes of One Piece, and Luffy vs Lucci grasped those better than the former battles I mentioned, in my opinion. My favorite OP fight for sure.
The tone of the Kaido fight was all over the place. One moment it's "your dreams made the people of this country starve", next minute him and Kaido are cheesing at eachother having the time of their lives. Then Gear 5 is goofy as hell until the very final attack. It just doesn't come together
So true that having all of the citizens in the backdrop lends a lot of emotion. Def agree. I had thought the people of Wano would have at least glimpsed up and seen a giant w flaming hair and a massive dragon fighting in the distant sky and would have maybe witnessed the final blow or something, but I guess not 😅 I don't know why the author didn't at least do that.. Although the solitary fights have a certain tension to them too. Like w Katakuri. While the fight serves other purposes too, it makes it feel like pride and being the superior fighter are more prevalent concepts in the secluded 1v1's imo. I guess I feel like there's more competitive spirit and mutual respect in Katakuri and Kaido fights, and not having backdrop of citizens or even a bunch of allies or spectators, kind of contributes to it, if that makes sense? Maybe it doesn't I could be crazy lol. Great analysis well done gr8 vid
The end of the Fight between Luffy and Lucci had a big emotional impact, especially in the anime thanks to the music and the voice acting that further complemented the scene.
my favorite fight is definitely Luffy vs Kaido. I totally get the issue and the lack of emotion in this fight. But to me this fight was what I was looking for when Luffy goes up against a yonko. Just pure confidence. I don't think we will get another emotional heavy fight like Luffy vs Lucci until maybe Blackbeard or endgame boss. I don't think Luffy fighting a yonko will bring out a lot of emotion. Overall I thought Luffy vs Kaido was the most fun , hype , and crazy fight.
I am totally on board with the 1st place, because mainly I just love emotion, drama driven scenes with simplicity. And the raw emotion I get when I watch Lucci vs Luffy is just unbelievably beautiful. I love it. Though my second place is Luffy vs Crocodile, again because I love emotion and drama more than anything. The moment when Crocodile was beaten was pure joy and I felt a deep katharsis when watching it. I am not sure yet about Luffy vs Kaido as I would love to see more dramatic scenes, the confidence of Luffy is sometimes underwhelming as we are facing a Yonkou. Well, just my thoughts about this topic :) Thanks for the video Morj!
Lucci for the hype that it was the fall of Luffy but then standing his ground after all the damage, that Ussop speech and the anime’s “🔥JET GATLING!!!!🔥” (One of the best anime fight finales of all time).
I Like The Gear 5 transformation Because it reminded me of early one piece, specifically, when Luffy would use the enviornment or tools to duke it out against his foes. As the foes grew stronger and Haki became more prevelant, i was sadly resigned to the fights just being slugfests since there was no way luffy dropping something like a rock on kaido would do anything. But With the advent of Gear 5.... oh man that had both, cool slugfests and enviornmental usage. I like the tone fluctuation too
@@bullettime1116 everyone keeps saying this but don't understand what I mean. I. The fights they have moments of humor or goofy moments but not a power up based strictly on that. I didn't come to watch a Tom and Jerry fight
@@tercial Thank you for putting this so nicely. Unfortunately a lot of One Piece fans can't handle the fact that not everyone enjoys EVERYTHING about this great manga. I don't like gear 5 either. Luffy already was a character full of joy and someone who would laugh often. But what I like a lot is when this goofy character gets serious and stops laughing and joking in a very tense situation. Then you as a reader know shit is REALLY going down. Gear five is to loony tones for me and I don't like how Luffy is laughing ALL the time while in that mode. And to be honest I don't like the design either. But hey to each their own.
The fight was too all over the place for me. High highs and low lows. Luffy grew too much over the course of the fight, which makes Kaido going down in the way he did feel rather convenient and empty... or at least emptier than it should have. Kaido vs Luffy feels like it was drawn with the intent to match these other great fights, but it just doesn’t reach those heights to me. Lucci beats both in emotion, Katakuri beats both in choreography… Kaido vs Luffy suffers from being good, but not to the level other battles have been.
@@VodkaRLG but Kaido isn't human. That alone should've meant something but it doesn't. Oda wrote all this in too. And that's supposed to be it? I think with Luffy being a "God" now makes sense that there weren't that many witnesses to his victory. The people of Wano are essentially sending up their prayers as Luffy answered them with his victory over Kaido.
I loved the last 2 chapters. Think people were let down alot by the lack of Kaido flashback and its forcing bias in their judgment. They're totally causing that earthquake and a win where people are scared of the winner is not a win, we're just halfway through the thing.
I feel like many people are overrating the fight a bit much just because how strong Kaido is supposed to be, idk for me it doesn't even get in the top 5 Luffy fights
It was the longest. It was by orders of magnitude his hardest, being knocked out a record 4 times before winning and getting 3 different power ups in order to pull it off. But Katakuri and Lucci were more entertaining for me.
Great video! My personal favorite fight is against Katakuri, with Lucci coming in at second, and Kaido in last. This is because I personally preferred the more serious tones of the other two fights over the fight with Kaido. I’m still hoping that Kaido gets back up and that the raid fails in order to raise the stakes and make a fight with Kaido that has a much more suspenseful tone.
From Kaido’s perspective. The way he kept a level head and had an answer for ALL of Luffy’s attacks impressed the hell out of me. Let’s not forget he even fatigued Luffy’s G5 and smiled at Luffy throwing thunder at him. Kaido is by far, the strongest creature I’ve seen in this OP world.
If anything, I agree that Luffy vs Lucci was one of the best fights in One Piece and is still an awesome fight to watch from beginning to end. However, my personal favorite fight in the series so far, is Luffy vs Katakuri mainly because when you think about it, it's Luffy fighting and overcoming a better version of himself.
Luffy Vs Kaido was great til a little after awakening. The chapters after 1043 seemed to bog down and begin spinning it’s wheels. I think if Oda had cut out the non rooftop fight stuff and had two solid combat chapters followed by Kaidos awakening and then 2-3 more combat chapters with some lore tidbits added in then the finish at 1050 would have been fine. The other stuff could’ve been handled at another time.
Great analysis, I personally have katakuri higher due to luffy's development as a fighter in the fight, but lucci has the most serious luffy ever been, so I understand those who take that as first.
Luffy vs Lucci is the most emotional climax to any fight I've seen in any manga or anime. "Feelings Put Into Fists" is the perfect title for that climax, and I got chills just seeing the panels pop up in this video. Easy #1. Also, I don't know if Morj does it or his editor, but the constant "check out this video above me" line followed by the video showing up below Morj is so damn funny to me and idk why lol.
I´m honestly excited about being this close to be able to re-read wano to see how it feels withoput the week to week pacing. It has not felt too long for me but Dressrosa won on a re-read, I´m expecting something similar to happen to wano.
Largely agree, though I would probably rank the Kaido fight even lower. I might personally prefer both the Crocodile and the Doflamingo fight more than the Kaido fight. I just highly value tone and climax over the other three categories, and the Kaido fight really didn't do well in either of those. Though I still hold a small hope that those can rectified in the coming chapters.
Whole heartedly agree. The emotion and sense of victory as an underdog feels so much better in the Crocodile and Doflamingo fight, hell I'd argue loads of final fights really sell it a lot more than this one. This one kind of felt like Oda didn't know what he wanted to do do he kept extending it to make it seem more epic, but in reality it just didn't do much for me. Something like Arlong's defeat or Corcodile's were more condensed, but that allowed all of the emotion of what was happening in those arcs to come to a head and boil until it finally exploded with Luffy barely coming through. It could be because of how little the more depressing aspects of the Wano citizens suffering was actually focused on, sure there was that small flash back but that wasn't something we could see tangibly in real time. I could have seen something much for gut wrenching to do with the suffering of Smile eaters not being able to express emotions, idk.
My only real problems with the Kaido battle were the constant interruptions (a staple of this series) and the fact that Luffy won without earning it in my opinion. He earned it in terms of spirit and drive, but not in terms of actually achieving his power. I also hope his battles with Blackbeard and/or Sakazuki end up involving way more DC. Nonetheless, I actually really loved the choreography and mutual respect between the two opponents. My favorite panels that I consider legendary were when Kaido was stunned that he knocked out Luffy unfairly, Luffy leaping into the night sky in Nika's pose, and when Luffy put his hand on his face laughing with the Gear Fifth subtext written beneath it.
Luffy vs Lucci, and Ennies Lobby in general, is almost impossible to top. Not just for One Piece, probably in all of Shonen Oda said so himself, he doubted he could write something as good again.
i would like to believe/ imagine that kaido/ momos fruit was around when joyboy was kicking and joyboy bounced several parts of the world into the sky and momo/ kaidos fruit helped them stay up permanently. Hence why the sky island's still have the old lore and gods still in pratice.
It doesn't even feel over. There was not a proper "cooldown" to Luffy's final attack. The conflict in Wano is likely not over. It will likely get resolved/stabilized without much further bloodshed, but it's not over as of now. Emperor's are *still alive,* after all. *Three* of them. And there may be admirals on the way! And the generals of most every emperor can handle an admiral now. Stuff is gonna get *wild* now.
I just hoped Kaido fight like a beast before he passed out. Not like a "strong, can take on everyone" beast, but more of a "cornered beast" fighting for survival. I'm sorry.
We have to take into account the fact that Kaido on some level wanted to lose, he wanted Luffy to be Joyboy and take down the WG, to become everything Kaido could never be. I just wish Oda focused on this aspect of him more (unless Kaido is about to bust out of his lava bath to do some crazy shit).
Morj, I agree with every point you make and also felt like the Kaido v Luffy climax to be lacking emotionally. Though I have to add one thing: Kaidos flashback in one way still had an emotional dimension to it. The way he talked to King, reminiscing and telling him that the man to beat him would be Joyboy was Odas way of giving the situation emotional value. Of course I dont think it hit quite home like that, since it was more informational than anything, but I digress.
Luffy Vs Lucci in my opinion had more impact due to the emotional weight the fight carried and with her representing the Straw Hats going head-to-head against the World Government for Robin
I have watched the engine to Luffy vs Lucci so many times the sounds are ingrained in my subconscious. Luffy vs Kat 1 hour fight was my go to confort video during the pandemic. I don't think it's fair to compare them to Luffy vs kaido without seeing it animated. But Luffy vs Lucci has so much drama and dread. You know during the whole fight Luffy is barely containing Lucci, and if he loosens up even for a second Lucci can escape and kill the other straw hats. While the others are more creative you just can't beat heart. Like I am literally crying watching s video that talks about the ending of that fight. It's just too good. I know it only has like 3 memorable moments, but I take 1 jet gattling over all of Luffy vs kaido in s heart beat.
The lack of emotional impact is why I want there to be more to Kaido. The end to Katakuri's fight also lacked emotion, but what makes it not necessary is that the fight was unexpected and more of a personal challenge. Luffy didn't go to WCI to beat Katakuri, he went to get Sanji and those scenes packed a ton of emotion. Luffy came to Wano to take down Kaido, 1049/1050 did not live up to that. Yes Choreography is great, punch is great, but it lacks finality and the expected emotional payoff. When you build something up for 500+ chapters, it needs to resolve it all. The Kaido flashback even takes away from it, coz it does not make us sympathize or understand Kaido, we just get info. If we got a Luffy flashback showing Laws Alliance, Ceaser, Doffy, Zou, Momo, Samurai, Tama, Yamato even Ace etc it would carry so much emotional weight. Like that punch being the culmination of the wills of everyone. A chapter where people specifically act like the fight isn't over, Citizens don't even know there was a fight and no one really witnessing the final blow can't really be called a CLIMAX imo. Still in GODA I trust and I hope we get more details in the aftermath and more emotion.
"The end to Katakuri's fight also lacked emotion" So wrong, it had a lot of emotion just based of the fact that this was Luffys most honorable opponent in the series. The best part is when he put his hat over his face to hide his shame, the ultimate showing of respect.
Video was great, but I really do hope that we will get a second part of the current fight. There are many signs pointing at a continuation rather than conclusion. If this will be the case, we would have a lot more to fill the criteria for your ranking.
Personally, apart from the climax of the fights, my favourite was always luffy vs katakuri as nobody knew even after the end that luffy will win or not and it was the most hopeless situation luffy was ever in, the sheer unexpectedness was the one thing I never got in this series for any luffy fight and luffy vs katakuri will be remembered forever I do hope Oda tops that someday as luffy vs kaido didn’t have that till now granted G5 was the biggest moment for all OP fandom
This video helped me realize that what I value the most in One Piece fights is the tone. Imagine if Luffy had been all giggly and light hearted throughout the Lucci fight: Enies Lobby going ablaze from the buster call, the crew desperately holding the marines back while Luffy tries to finish the fight and Luffy was just... having fun... now that would ruin the whole mood and the climax, right? Well that's exactly how I feel about Luffy vs Kaidou and Wano in general. The tone was just *incredibly* incompatible with what a fight for the fate of an enslaved and miserable country should've been, and trying to remind the reader what the stakes were with a mere flashback by the very end of the fight was not nearly good enough.
it's like u completely disregarded the tone joyboy/sun God Nika is supposed set in place whenever he liberated a country and just said "luffy smiling in a dire situation = bad" everyone that always has an issue with the tone always ignores sun gd Nika as a character and what hes supposed to represent which makes me neevr take their opinion seriously because they never wanna address it or they just straight up ignored it
@AndrewWithEase11 11 the fight never lacked tension, luffys new form never overwhelmed kaido and luffy was practically killing himself just to keep the form active but nah "luffy smiling = no stakes"
@@MicaW4VE so you’re telling me that, from now on, every Luffy fight has to be about fun and enjoyment. Because he turned out to have the same fruit as Joyboy/Nika every fight from now on needs to be about Luffy having fun? You’re the one disregarding other people’s arguments, I never said that the smiling was the bad thing. I’m saying that the situation called for more than that. The country was ENSLAVED, people were dying from starvation and dehydration for two decades. It was the most awful scenario we’ve seen in One Piece so far. But Luffy was fighting Kaidou as if it was a training match with a random guy and not the cause for all the suffering. That’s why the tone was off, not the smiling, but because he was smiling at the villain who has done the worst things in the story. Those concepts just don’t match. It’s like you’re saying it would be fine if this was the tone for the Blackbeard fight in the future.
@@userusernomi like I said once again your disregarding what sun God Nika is supposed to represent, pre gear 5 luffy was about as serious as he could possibly be, if luffys df is based off the legend of a man that's supposed to spread joy far and wide as he liberates them of their despair, then what do u mean the tone shift is off? that's what I call ignoring the narrative and just trying to make direct comparisons to previous arcs that's aren't even remotely the same circumstances. its the equivalent of being upset that all might always has a smile on his face when he fights just because the villian has done fucked up things therefore all might should be angry, the message isn't about responding to the actions of the villian, it's about showing everyone else and civilians that everything's OK and he's gonna take care of it I'm not even gonna go into depth with you about a fight that hasn't happened yet but I've never once doubted oda writing thus far in the story when it comes to setting a tone.
@AndrewWithEase11 11 I'm not even gonna bother giving that level of ignorance the time of the day 💀 but if u wanna still act like what u said held any sort of weight be my guest, I won't be here to entertain it 😂
The Usopp Speech/Luffy’s Final Gatling on Lucci just hits different man. The raw emotion in those scenes
Especially with everything that happened in that Arc. That Arc was nearly the end of the Strawhats because of how much they had been fighting and divided. Luffy's win was for their survival, not just to beat the big bad
agreed
This might make no sense and I haven't watched the video yet, but to me Luffy vs kaido felt like a narrative clash over a fight fight. When I think of a fight fight, I think of Luffy vs Lucci. We see Luffy struggling to stand and coughing up blood. It's a total grinder. Luffy is evidently still tired after other fights like doflamingo and kaido, but the emphasis on Luffy's struggle makes Lucci and katakuri fights more vivid to me personally.
I always believed that what spurred Luffy in that fight was Ussop's promise of "We're going home together"
Without the assurance of Ussop being there after the fight i dont think Luffy would have been able to go beyond his limits

If luffy vs kaido will be well directed and well animated mixed with fitting dramatic OST and not just slapping some random themes that doesn't even fit the fight, it'll reach top 5 IMO
I mean episode 1015 made chapter 1000 look like a comic strip from my dad's newspaper and this is coming from a guy who loves the manga 🗿
Because it was better. Choreography makes a fight. Kaido vs luffy was just two unskilled brutes gong at it. Boring. Oda is not Kishimoto who is the goat when it comes to choregraphing fights because he is a nerd by Oda admittance when it comes to animation.
Even seeing those panels from the Lucci vs Luffy fight in isolation made me feel way more emotion than the Kaido defeat. It's not even close IMO.
Just look at Luffy's eyes 😭
Seeing the shock on Lucci’s face as he’s getting pummeled is so cathartic.
That’s literally what’s called nostalgia, are you serious?
@@tueboys1 it was just way better. All 3 fights are mediocre, but lucci way better
@@tueboys1 what’s your point?
The snap-back kick Luffy landed on Kaido in chapter 1037 is one of my favorite bits of choreography in the series. The way he lets his leg linger back as he dodges the thunder bagua, then holds onto Kaido's club as he releases it for a devastating blow to the face is one of the most cash money things Luffy's ever done.
I haven’t seen someone say “cash money” in so damn long.
Cash money tf 😂
hard agree, young money cash money billionaires
I agree it was a dope kick.
You’re very clever my friend.
Seems he took Dude In A Room analysis little close to his heart. Anyway, I welcome this tone of Morj. It's very refreshing
I will die on the hill that Luffy vs Usopp is the best fight in the series

Honestly not just emotionally but god damn usopp used the hell out of his arsenal to counter Luffy it was so amazing

The Lucci fight is the best, but it can be topped. Oda is capable.
It is quite crazy that Luffy's next proper 1v1 might actually be against Teach depending on how things play out.
Lucci vs Luffy is overrated IMO I liked Doffy’s fight even more
Feel like the emotional stakes are a lot higher against Akainu tbh
Lucci was Luffy's biggest pre-TimeSkip challenge, both physically and ideologically. While Luffy is the greatest representation of Freedom, Lucci is the greatest representation of Control and Obedience, because for him all that matters is "Justice", regardless of the methods or consequences.
Is justice not simply an excuse for Lucci that allows him to satisfy his bloodlust?
Akainu is more akin to what you are describing when it comes to justice imo.
@@floriandolder8111
Akainu is just like lucci but he doesn't let anyone escape. he was pissed that doffy was allowed to do what he did.
@ok
Yes he does what show have u been watching
They won all their fights fairly easily? I guess I'm literally just reading a different series lmao.
I would definitely not say Zoro won his fight easily, dude literally saw the reaper afterwards he was so close to death
Yes except for Zoro, he was getting his ass beat until he pulled off the biggest power up in the series. Then the fight instantly turned in his favor.
@ᴀᴠɪᴇx most of the fights included power ups as well as the tobi roppo themselves feeling like push overs besides ulti.
I thought the same thing like Luffy is finally able to go toe to toe with a yonko he can’t help but be thrilled just like kaido since he finally got a good matchup after all this time
@AndrewWithEase11 11 ok bro don’t mean I don’t see the flaws within just that I can respect some of oda decisions Luffy v lucci will always be #1
@AndrewWithEase11 11 how does having our main character reaching the point in the story where they can finally take full control of any situation make everything not matter?
I agree. I feel that gear 5 was only so cool because of how new it is and seeing luffy do all these different things but the fight itself was mid
Roof piece was poorly animated if it were animated like dressrosa would have appreciated it
No.
@@webpaygrowearn8739 I agree that it was animated like shit but Dressrosa's animation was also just as bad lol
@@webpaygrowearn8739 roof piece shit? It was insanely cool, this is bait right?
I LOVED it
Luffy vs Lucci has always been my favorite 1v1 in the series and I could never explain why until now. You nailed it as usual MrMorj. Thank you
It was a wow moment when Luffy punched the lights out of Lucci.
Exactly. Wano as an arc is just boring
yep, such a weird arc

I don't think the gomu gomu no gatling climax vs lucci can ever be competed. That moment is as much of a classic as the goku-gohan kamehameha

Ruffy vs Katakuri was the best. The moment when both are like '' I don't even care about war anymore, I care about you go down.'' Best fight yet

That fight is sooooo good! Definitely in my Top 3. The way Oda structured Crocodile and Baroque Works was excellent. I agree, it hits soooo different!
Beautifully put, especially the description of Luffy v Lucci's finale. Got me teary-eyed with that one.
The end of the Fight between Luffy and Lucci had a big emotional impact, especially in the anime thanks to the music and the voice acting that further complemented the scene.
My dawg legit said the battle seemingly ended. Someone wake Morj up and tell him the raid needed in success 😂
my favorite fight is definitely Luffy vs Kaido.
I like the tone fluctuation too
I don't like it it's too lonely toon and ruins the seriousness of the fight

@@tercial how did you get past early one piece then? That shit was looney as hell

That's on you, not on ODA... ODA has Luffy demystify the figure of yonkous telling overtly that they're just humans after all.
@@VodkaRLG but Kaido isn't human. That alone should've meant something but it doesn't. Oda wrote all this in too. And that's supposed to be it? Oda has written much more gripping finales (as seen in the video) and this is the one that he leaves for an island sized punch and a declaration to one person to do all the emotional heavy lifting? That's a lot to ask for a secret victory.
How long was kaido fighting thou? He fought the samurai, zoro etc
Of course he's worn down

There's sometimes no pleasing the one piece community.
I thought the raid was gonna fail though ?
don't forget, that's IF the fight is over ;)
Great video as always Morj. Thanks for putting everything into perspective.
No fight comes close to the Luccy fight. Luffy's screaming Gatling gets me every single time.
Katakuri fight was a welcome change of theme but not a fan of how it ended.
Acceptance is difficult, I know.
Luffy vs. Lucci has been my go-to favorite fight since it happened. Glad we agree on that!
yup, big one piece youtubers like liam from grandlinereview and ohara will never really say anything of genuine and true criticism of oda's writing, they'll make it appear as if they actually do by saying stuff like " i get why "some" people say this and that but i think oda knows what he's doing and i like what he's doing" they'll always go with the majority as if they're not the ones affecting the majority's opinions and driving them by their popularity, we should not except them to genuinely criticize something they make most of their money off of

The anime can make the climax a lot better with the concluding episode being something like "Luffy and Kaido" which have like half being kaido's flashback then little flashback scenes like Oda did with the lucci fight to add more weight behind it and it would work really well because in that final punch Luffy seemed really serious even though he was in gear 5th
As someone who was binging wci to catch up to one piece, just reading and seeing Luffy's desperation against katakuri was actually a stand out moment for me personally. For the fiest time ever i truly was so worried about what could potentially happen
I honestly started to choke up hearing you recap Luffy vs Lucci. You make excellent points and your delivery was eloquent. Great work!
I think with Luffy being a "God" now makes sense that there weren't that many witnesses to his victory. The people of Wano are essentially sending up their prayers as Luffy answered them with his victory over Kaido.
Tbh luffy’s final fight with crocodile gives me goosebumps to this day
The last few chapters felt like they were written by an assistant, not a master writer who created amazing fights and climaxes for 20 years.
I loved the last 2 chapters. Think people were let down alot by the lack of Kaido flashback and its forcing bias in their judgment. That scene with Toko changing the message hit me hard af a day nearly brought out a man tear.
Luffy had a punch the size of onigishima slam down Kaido into a magma chapter, how the hell are people letting a lack of flashback affect their hype for that crazy ass moment?
Exactly. Oda doesnt have the Touch anymore imo.
@@kevinlee6003 so people are supposed to have low expectations for the greatest villain in the story so far? That's how you approach this story that has blown us away time after time? That's a disservice to Oda and One Piece

Finally, the kind of content you excel at 👏👏👏 I enjoyed this video A LOT.
Awful back story awful power up
Great analysis, I personally have katakuri higher due to luffy's development as a fighter in the fight, but lucci has the most serious luffy ever been, so I understand those who take that as first.
The best Luffy's fight is still Luffy vs Lucci for me. Pathos and emotion on another level
@AndrewWithEase11 11 Your comment is redundant
@AndrewWithEase11 11 If you consider this a "win" that explains a lot...
Agreed and both those fights have plenty of that compared the Kaido fight
Water 7/Enies Lobby is just the greatest saga ever. From top to bottom it’s really perfect.
The return of positive Morj!
Luffy vs Lucci, and Ennies Lobby in general, is almost impossible to top. Not just for One Piece, probably in all of Shonen
Oda said so himself, he doubted he could write something as good again.
i would like to believe/ imagine that kaido/ momos fruit was around when joyboy was kicking and joyboy bounced several parts of the world into the sky and momo/ kaidos fruit helped them stay up permanently. Hence why the sky island's still have the old lore and gods still in pratice.
you know nothing man, afro-luffy vs. foxy is the best one out of all one piece fights!

What is it with some One Piece fans? There's too many unresolved plot threads for this to be over yet. Unless trolling, of course.
Cope
Luffy vs Foxy > Luffy vs Kaido. The former had far more emotional weight and much better choreography.
Wow never thought I would completely agree with a RUclipsr. Great video.
If this is truly the end of the Wano battle I am so disappointed. Feel like I wasted 4 years for a rushed/shitty ending
I feel that for sure. Do you think G5 was an ass pull?
@@Cub__ no no, I'm on board with G5, just hate the build up with no deliver
"The end to Katakuri's fight also lacked emotion"
So wrong, it had a lot of emotion just based of the fact that this was Luffys most honorable opponent in the series. The best part is when he put his hat over his face to hide his shame, the ultimate showing of respect.
Luffy vs Lucci is always the best fight in One Piece
Sooooo the raid uh looking pretty successful
The fact the Kaido final punch didn’t feel like a final punch and had people questioning let’s you know where it stands in comparison to others
Video was great, but I really do hope that we will get a second part of the current fight. There are many signs pointing at a continuation rather than conclusion. If this will be the case, we would have a lot more to fill the criteria for your ranking.
yamato joining the crew lmao
Personally, apart from the climax of the fights, my favourite was always luffy vs katakuri as nobody knew even after the end that luffy will win or not and it was the most hopeless situation luffy was ever in, the sheer unexpectedness was the one thing I never got in this series for any luffy fight and luffy vs katakuri will be remembered forever
I do hope Oda tops that someday as luffy vs kaido didn’t have that till now granted G5 was the biggest moment for all OP fandom
The tone was just *incredibly* incompatible with what a fight for the fate of an enslaved and miserable country should've been, and trying to remind the reader what the stakes were with a mere flashback by the very end of the fight was not nearly good enough.
it's like u completely disregarded the tone joyboy/sun God Nika is supposed set in place whenever he liberated a country and just said "luffy smiling in a dire situation = bad"
everyone that always has an issue with the tone always ignores sun gd Nika as a character and what hes supposed to represent which makes me neevr take their opinion seriously because they never wanna address it or they just straight up ignored it
@AndrewWithEase11 11 the fight never lacked tension, luffys new form never overwhelmed kaido and luffy was practically killing himself just to keep the form active but nah "luffy smiling = no stakes"
@@userusernomi like I said once again your disregarding what sun God Nika is supposed to represent, pre gear 5 luffy was about as serious as he could possibly be, if luffys df is based off the legend of a man that's supposed to spread joy far and wide as he liberates them of their despair, then what do u mean the tone shift is off? that's what I call ignoring the narrative and just trying to make direct comparisons to previous arcs that's aren't even remotely the same circumstances.
its the equivalent of being upset that all might always has a smile on his face when he fights just because the villian has done fucked up things therefore all might should be angry, the message isn't about responding to the actions of the villian, it's about showing everyone else and civilians that everything's OK and he's gonna take care of it
I'm not even gonna go into depth with you about a fight that hasn't happened yet but I've never once doubted oda writing thus far in the story when it comes to setting a tone.
@AndrewWithEase11 11 I'm not even gonna bother giving that level of ignorance the time of the day 💀 but if u wanna still act like what u said held any sort of weight be my guest, I won't be here to entertain it 😂
