Really liked how you differentiate Ace and Sabo based on their outlooks as kids. This was such an important mini-arc since Oda showed us their differing values before Sabo was reintroduced into the story. Something else I thought about goes back to your Skypiea video, where the 3 aspects of freedom were discussed: inherited will, a man's dream, and the flow of time. Sabo was missing the inherited will part, since he was't the son of important people like his brothers Luffy and Ace. I think of Sabo eating Ace's DF as him gaining his inherited will from Ace, rather than Ace's replacement. Always love your vids Morj, easily the best OP commentary out there
Agreed, but Luffy too inherited his will (of curse he also inherited Roger's will as well). So that wasn't "unique" to his characters as the differences of their past that you mentioned are. This way it feels more "real" that he actually HAS a rol to play that's different from them. But yeah, it still fulfills the aspect of freedom he lacked, as you mentioned ^^
@@sakura5sango6 I think Sabo is fighting for the freedoms of those who don't have the power to fight for themselves. Even as a child Sabo hated how "commoners" are treated not because of his relationship with Luffy and Ace. His moral outlook led him to Ace and Luffy and cemented what he thought was worth fighting for. When he lost his memory he still retained hatred for the World Government's caste system.
I love that Morj clarifies this isn’t a powerscaling discussion within the first 30 seconds of the video. But half the comments are still just powerscaling Sabo to Ace.
Thats all they do, their favourite characters in anime are based on who is stronger, and as stronger characters appear they favorites change, its so lame tbh.
@@velho6298 C'mon his videos are never _that_ complex.. you're sounding like a Rick and Morty fan. They're well thought out but any one piece fan could understand them if they just pay a little attention...
I always LOVED Sabo and the three brothers. Didn't expect him to become the Flame Emperor, definetely the best new story development in chapter 1054 for me.
Sabo's flame emperor title is cool but let's be real, its propaganda. Like the people around the world are praising him like a god for a few things he didn't really do like kill Cobra or kidnap Vivi. Even escaping from the admirals have context cuz Fujitora could let them go like in Dressrosa plus marines can't fight seriously in the holyland. If Fujitora launches a gravity blade then dozens of castles up there are getting destroyed which can't happen
I think Sabo’s importance may be Dragon’s intention. He was very impressed by Sabo when he found him. I think he sees Sabo as the perfect protege he can train and mold into someone capable of leading the new world they create.
Impressed? Dragon was disgusted and shocked that the country would make a child of nobility hate being nobility because of their horrendous treatment of the masses. I still agree with you but I wouldn't use the word impressed personally
@@france_d_robin he was impressed by sabos will to survive and potential of course the circumstances around that discovery were shocking and disturbing
In one piece will is power, Ace was the son of the pirate king but he didn't truly seek freedom or accepted who he was because of his hatred towards his father, I believe Ace was the right brother to die because he was built to be the chosen one, he was the son of the pirate king, had all three flavors of haki, was a commander on a yonko ship, had a logia a fruit regarded as one of the rarest in the verse, symbolically it literally is what people describe there ambitions " The fiery will" or the " Flame of rebellion" and was raised by the Hero of the marine but despite all of that he didn't truly love himself or accepted himself. Where in Luffy always dreamed big and wanted to be the freest man on the sea and Sabo wanted freedom and equality for all, Ace was the one brother who truly didn't appreciate or desire his freedom, had a strong enough will or followed his own path til the very end because say Luffy became notorious without aid from a yonko or his blood atleast until marineford and Sabo had to build himself back up with no memory of who he was. If Ace had accepted himself instead of trying to reject who he was he'd be the chosen one
Ace, beyond metaphorically, is the fire in their hearts. He was the original fire, the one that taught Luffy and Sabo passion, and the one that still burns on. He died by burning too hot, literally. While it's a flaw, it only solidifies him and his purpose in the series, as the incarnation of fire. Everyone needs fire in their heart to make dreams come alive, and that is what Ace created within Luffy and Sabo. I believe this is also Roger's conviction being passed on to Luffy in Sabo through Ace. The thing that Luffy and Sabo share, that Ace didn't have, is the true desire for freedom for all. We see Ace observing and adapting to the world, but already jaded and cynical. Realistic freedom to Ace, is what freedom is to so many of us, individualistic at the family level. You can't change the world and you accept that, so you do what you can for yourself and loved ones. Ace was never the one to change the world, he was the one to start the fire.
"Realistic freedom to Ace, is what freedom is to so many of us, individualistic at the family level. You can't change the world and you accept that, so you do what you can for yourself and loved ones." This is deeply American and should not be generalized but besides this, good points.
@@voxomnes9537 Oops, you're right, and I was projecting. Well, I don't live like that anymore, but I find myself actively criticizing that aspect of my friends and family. Anyway, thank you for pointing that out
Sabo in the endgame of one piece is going to be an icon. His fame will be so world renowned that I think it will rival Luffy’s. I hope during the final war we get a Luffy Sabo team up panel like the one we got in marineford.
It already does rival Luffys though. Without a doubt Sabo and the new emperors are the most notorious individuals in the world at this moment. Kidd and Law would normally be on this list too, but the whole Sabo kills Cobra thing does overshadow it quite a bit
I get that this is a story and that one 'brother figure' can replace another as a story element. But let's be realistic for a second - you can't replace a brother. Sabo isn't Ace and Ace is still gone. Nothing lessens the loss of Ace. The reintroduction of Sabo is just that, the return of one lost brother where Luffy used to have two.
Exactly. Morj trying to math this out with 'net losses' was a bit cringe tbh - we're talking about emotion here, not financials. Ace is Ace and I felt his loss despite the introduction of Sabo, even if the intro felt a bit odd at the time.
Morj was talking in terms of Luffy losing a brother. Ace is Ace first and a brother second. Luffy lost "his only brother" and he lost Ace, but Morj was criticizing the former being reversed.
"nothing lessens the loss of ace" The scene of jimbei reminding luffy of his crew did literally just that for luffy. If it hadn't, he wouldn't have felt any better and wouldn't have calmed down from the grief induced tantrum he'd been throwing.
@@valuedcontributer7690I think there are two things going on here. One is internal - the memory of a loved one and the grief you carry with you due to their loss. The second is externalisation of that grief and how you affect others around you as a result of it. Jinbei was helping Luffy with the latter, and helping him to move past it. It didn't lessen the loss it just taught Luffy how to cope with that grief and work towards mental stability. It doesnt mean he misses Ace any less.
He's already surpassed Ace in terms of renown and feats. The sad thing about Ace is he died before he had a chance to stake out a legacy. He died while he was still on the come-up.
Ace never wanted legacy, he didn't love himself and didn't pursue freedom. He was contented with having a dad (whitebeard) and wanting to make him the pirate king. Ace, sadly, had no ambition
@@Slashx92 He was still finding out what he wanted in life I believe. Eventually WB would die or retire and he would have had to out to what to do next.I agree at that point in time he just wanted to follow Whitebeard, but had he been able to live longer I think he would have found something to strive for.
@@Slashx92 no ambition. he literally challenged world strongest man. He admired WB as a father and wanted him to become king. It is similar to how zoro has a big ambition to stand on top. But he put luffy ahead of his own ambition. That does not diminish their ambition. Esp because in both case their captain would be willing to sacrifice their ambition for them too. (Both in case of luffy and WB)
Remember when Sabo's adopted brother said he wanted to sit on the Empty Throne? That dude is already the false king of Goa. That should be Sabo. So maybe thats forshadowing for Sabo sitting in the Empty Throne at the end.
I have a theory that makes the amnesia part feel a bit better. we know there can be two devil fruits with similar abilities where one is the superior of the other (ex. flame and magma, kilo and ton fruits). obviously Sabo not getting his memory back sooner with all the stories and wanted posters of ace and luffy going around before the war doesn't make sense. I think someone in the revolutionary army has the superior of pudding's fruit that erases memories and was instructed by dragon to keep Sabo from remembering his past. His reasoning for doing so could be to prevent his right hand from running off to help luffy or ace whenever they got in trouble which could have gotten him killed or put the revolutionaries in a difficult position since they operate in secret and Sabo would be causing a scene and bringing attention to them. After Ace died Dragon probably didn't see a reason to keep erasing his memory anymore, especially now that heir plans are coming into fruition.
It all makes sense. It's not enough that Luffy defeats Blackbeard or Akainu or Imu, because when old rule is taken out, there will always be a powervacuum. A vacuum that someone or something will always fill no matter what. It's only a matter of time. Luffy does not care anything like that, he doesn't care who rules what. What we need is someone like Sabo to fill that vacuum, to make sure that the change after removing the old system is actually a change for the better in the world. I would not be too surprised if at the end of the story Sabo would take or be made to take the mantell to be new just king of the world, or something along those lines.
Dressrosa Ch 760" Fujitora:We're actually birds of a feather here. The navy can't be the hero to this country... it ain't our place!!! Sabo:If anyone finds out what you're thinking Fujitora: All they'll see is that I couldn't get past ya... Sabo:It really is a gamble then Fujitora:Heh Heh... I've got lady luck on my side...
I think what I like about sabo is that he had his own path while ace path kinda was just something to move the story and was essentially a similar path to luffys. Sabo is way more calm and collected compared to his other brothers which also gives better contrast to Luffy and ace.
Morj have you ever lost someone before? Luffy still having Sabo doesn’t diminish Ace’s death if you’ve ever truly lost someone you love no matter how many times it happens that’s not something you forget it will forever stay with you and it will always impact you…so for me Sabo still being alive reignites that connection with ace
These were my thoughts exactly. I also saw someone else saying that the scene with Jimbei “lessened the blow” if you’ve ever truly lost someone that you deeply cared for, then you know that nothing can really lessen the pain. You just learn to handle it. I still feel the same way about my losses as I did the day they happened & nothing changes that. I just learned to cope with the pain & push forward because I think that’s what they would want me to do. Not to mention, Sabo already died as far as Luffy knew so he mourned that loss for years already which is why him saying “he’s the only brother I have” is still relevant because in his mind Ace was the only brother that he had. Sabo coming back into life just made the pain of losing Sabo go away for the most part but it doesn’t lessen the pain of losing Ace
I’ve been saying so much of this stuff about Sabo’s longstanding potential ever since I read Dressrosa, but you went even further on it than I’d ever thought through. Really good, extremely reasonable video, especially since a ton of my friends even still subscribe to a frustrating extent to the ‘Sabo is just an Ace replacement’ thing which I have legitimately never believed. Frankly, I believe that the mysterious top hat man in Loguetown was him, and thus that it’s genuinely not impossible the ideas of Sabo as a character predate Ace himself. Especially when you consider that, prior to the Shichibukai’s conceptualization, the outline for One Piece was significantly shorter, focusing on the Yonko as the predominant threat with vastly less roadblocks… Which also sounds like much less time for Ace’s deal to ever even have room to breathe.
I always hated the argument that Sabo was just a stand-in for Ace. It made sense, sure, but it just seemed too superficial and reactionary. I trust Oda to know what he's doing, so when I find something off about the story, I wait and see what he does with it. This was the right decision to make for Sabo.
I think playing “brother math” is pretty disingenuous and silly. In real life if you lost a brother and found out your lost brother has returned you’d still be devastated for the loss just like Luffy was. I thought that point was really dumb.
It doesn't cancel. But it does lessen the blow. Its like an airbag in a car crash. The car is still lost. You broke lots of bone. You were crushed, But you weren't crushed to death
@@poutineausyropderable7108 To me that airbag was Luffy still having his crew. He probably would have died if they weren't there to "cushion the blow". I mean do you think Luffy loves his brother more than his crew? Does he play favorites in the crew? His crew is also his family. Sabo is just his family in a separate way.
To me he already surpassed him. He went above and beyond his potential and created a name for himself, while Ace ended up being remembered more for being Rogers son instead of his own legacy as a great pirate. Sabo just created his own legacy and was dubbed the name “Flame Emperor”
RC25 Agreed. I also liked Sabo a lot more than Ace. Ace I always found was a bit overrated. A good character but really I never cared much for him. Ironically, Wano made me like him a lot more. I adored Sabo's introduction and backstory in the Post-war and saw him as a tragic individual who dreamed high and was cut short only to be given a chance to live. And to me his reappearance alongside Donflamingo saved me from completely hating Dressrosa as an arc.
@@Cola-42 I think the comment was a bit miss worded, it's all about mentality, Ace was always caped in his head due to his obsession with his blood and lineage, always having a short temper, which caused his downfall. On the contrary my man sabo was focus and determined to fight the celestial dragons and the marines from the moment he was rescued until now, on top of that he got Ace's fruit, adding more motivation to why he fights, to show the world that the spirit of his bother lives through him, idk that's how I saw things, glad to hear other opinions.
@@Cola-42 also Ace didn't have a big dream, he wanted to make WB the king, so it was hard for him to do huge things and improve his powers and fighting skills, like sabo and luffy
Disagree tbh nobody knew Ace was Roger's son till after Marineford. Imho he suffered the "gone too soon" scenario where he was too young and did not have enough time to carve out an age for himself. Dude was supposed to be Whitebeard's successor and the next Yonko, but unfortunately what happened has to happen in order for the plot to moves forward... But besides that Ace at age 20 was a world-renowned pirate of great infamy and a Yonko commander, on the same tier as King and Katakuri. Wtf did Sabo accomplish at 20? He was too busy being amnesiac to even make a move KEKW. So in no way, shape or form you can say Sabo "exceeded" Ace because Ace got it too early and he became big at such a young age, that makes it very difficult to compare any thing relevant because he belongs in a different age, one that the Yonkos rule instead of this new age where Luffy is the big boss who will smash down opponent X and become Pirate King. It is like comparing the Punic Wars vs World War 2 imho absolute nonsense World War 2 trumps every other war in existence in terms of casualty BUT the Punic Wars was wayyyy worse with insane shits going on through out the war and the complete and total annihilation of an entire civilization...
Seems like Oda always meant for the son of a pirate in Ace, the son of a noble in Sabo, and the son of a revolutionary in Luffy to change the world. ASL - The holy trinity of global change.
I just realized when Morj keep saying "the Dawn" it's very similar in pronunciation with "Dadan", the one character who actually nurtured and raised Luffy, Ace, and Sabo. I know it's very cringe and a really long stretch, but if it's really something that Oda has planned since the beginning, he seriously never stop to impress me with this little and easy-to-miss little details!
I'd love for you to cover the parallels between the new yonko and the old "Strongest" pirates/yonko (I know the yonko system wasnt around till after rogers sake but its easier to refer to the strongest pirates around the time of god valley as the yonko). Luffy clearly carries on the will of joyboy/Gol D Roger, the pirate who's destiny lies in bringing a new dawn to the world. Roger wasn't able to fulfil this destiny so the torch was passed down to luffy. Shanks has parallels to Whitebeard. Whitebeard was Rogers rival, but friend. Whitebeard never had truily found the one piece, but Roger trusted whitebeard enough to tell him about the contents of it. In all the years shanks had been at sea before Luffy, he never found the one piece himself (intentionally or not); and obviously Luffy trusts shanks as much as his crewmates. Blackbeard has too many similarities to Xebec to not be intentional. Xebec had his fight of epic proportions against Roger and Garp, and Blackbeard and Luffy are destined to fight, Coby is also becoming the new generation's Garp, he knows the government is holding many secrets, and Akainu even tried to kill Coby in Marineford. Buggy is the most mysterious of all Yonko. I believe that Buggy is Doflamingo's successor, and Doflamingo was the successor to some other underground merchant. After Doffy's antics the government would obviously be more careful of people like Doffy, and we already know Buggy was involved with the underground even during Doffy's era, who's to say that Buggy doesn't take reigns and becomes the next underground king. This would certainly allow for buggy to amass a collection of powerful crew members, and even allies willing to kill for Buggy.
Man i was like yes yes thats right through the video and then you brought up Vivi. I finally hear something about her. You know how to understand this story man, cheers!
@@jjack3136 I feel the same as the guy above you. Ace when he was first introduced felt like a cliche cool older brother that was a lil smarter than the main character but just as much of a hot head. Sabo felt “cooler” to me because he feels much more natural than ace’s appeal. Also ace pretty much caused his own death by falling for akainu’s trap. It was only in wano that I started liking ace because he is only now starting to feel like a real person.
Sabo in my top 3 characters. The thing I liked most about his character is that it exposes how cruel an elite or competitive class can be to one of its own member especially he or she challenges that class.
I honestly didn’t see them introducing Sabo as weakening Aces death. If anything it gives Luffy a second chance at being strong enough to protect a brother he thought he had lost a long time ago before Ace. I loved the addition of Sabo. Sometimes when you accept your loss, continue you to work on yourself and appreciate what you have, you then realize what you do have and it can be revealed that you had way more than you did
I think in retrospect it would have been smarter to give Sabo's role to Masked Deuce, Ace's first in command. Luffy could have met him in marine ford and then Deuce can join the revolutionaries during the 2 year time skip. It gets rid of all of the narrative problems, both thematic and convenient plot points like amnesia to explain away sabo's absence, but would also build a stronger link between Luffy and Ace's comrades who we will most likely never get to know. I don't know if the character was created at that time, but even if he wasn't I would have suggested Ace's closest crew mate anyway.
Hmm interesting idea but the whole revolutionary connection from childhood + being a noble and childhood friend of luffy works way better for me... the only problem for me is sabbo's amnesia like maybe make him go on an undercover operation somewhere where he cant blow his Cover or make him be in a place where no newspapers get delivered and not just say oh amnesia
A while ago, I heard a ton of complaints about Akainu being able to overpower Ace because of the "magma > fire" logic, simply because irl, fire can burn hotter then magma when given enough time. I bet Oda is aware of this as well, and we may see this logic flipped on it's head when Sabo surpasses Ace, with Sabo burning Akainu.
I always took that line "magma burn hotter than fire" to be a flex from akainu's part. Like yeah, it's technically true, but if fodder has magma powers and a very powerful person has fire powers, fodder loses. I don't see how the quote is relevant when haki (will power) is the main focus of the history I also don't think is some kind of debility, like crocodile's fruit versus water
I've seen people speculate on how Sabo might be the one to actually take down the World Government and Im, while Luffy will take down Blackbeard and I think they might be on to something. Not necessarily saying that Luffy won't face any marine antagonists anymore but that his main antagonist will be Blackbeard. Makes sense since Luffy hasn't really explicitly stated that he will definitely take down the celestial dragons or the world government eventually, ever (as far as I recall)
5:11 I feel really related to you concerning Sabo replacing Ace, with the exception that I never actually thought he was gonna be used in that "damsel-in-distress" MF scenario. It would be just too plainly repetitive, even for him! xD I also never cared for him as other fans did, exactly, you put it into words: it's not that I didn't like him, after all I LOVED Sabo as a kid.... but those reasons you mentioned drastically lowered my interest on him, pretty much. Sabo basically seems like he will be the public/political face for changing the world into a better, freest place (and "for Luffy", so to say, as Luffy will NEVER want to be a hero/someone important with expectations and responsibilities). That way Sabo will be an important figure without being corrupted (achieving his dream), while Luffy will still be the freest man ever a the end of this story (achieving his dream too) :) PD: loved that little analysis of Vivi's rol as well. I think it's spot on. She's another Mugiwara, but she is probably the most "public/political" of the crew as Sabo is too lol.
"a back-up-brother to heal the hole in Luffy" i really love your analogies - in this aspect Morj is an unparalleled channel and i agree - i love Sabo's Role.
So basically I want the next chapter to be all about bounties.. 1. The rest of the SH bounties 2. Warlord bounties 3. Sabo's most likely increased bounty 4. Perfect opportunity to reveal Dragon's bounty(which I think is the highest since WG was formed) 5. Remaining people's bounty like Killer or Buggy.. 6. Blackbeard's most likely increased bounty 7. Yamato's bounty
As a fan, even tho luffy had the crew, it sucked to think he lost his brother and felt like he was alone as far as who he grew up with. To find out there was a third brother and to kno he wasn’t going to be alone was epic. It never changed how I felt/feel about Ace’s character. He’s still the GOAT when it comes to older brothers. He laid his life down for his younger brother. How would you feel if you forgot everything about your brothers, only to find out losing one of them is what brought your memory back. Wouldn’t you want the closest thing to be close to him near you? His devil fruit, which is presumed to have the previous users will in it. Maybe it’s just the Ace vs Sabo, who’s the best brother. Lol as of now Ace is the GOAT
The amnesia was done really well tho. The way he regained his memory because he saw the words "luffy" "ace" and "sakazuki" in the papers was fulfilling enough for me to give it a major pass
Honestly it amuses me how almost everyone says sabo's amnesia plotline = Bad. And then refuses to elaborate on why and how its bad, it's like a prejudice caused by sitcoms and soap operas here in occident and I get it, but this plotline was coherent and well executed, convenient? Yes of course but it wasnt out of nowhere as people tend to say.
Yeah, I completely agree, the fact that Sakazuki translates to sake cups or something like that was so genius. And for me, it added to the pain of the loss of Ace. Knowing that Sabo may have never recovered had Ace not been killed by Sakazuki/Akainu.
@@miguelfelix6338 The amnesia plotline was bad precisely because it was too convenient - regardless of its coherency or execution - and there was no way out other than for Oda to force through such a narrative device (and it shows that Oda isn't as much of a planner than he is hyped up to be). Don't strawman other people's perspectives on the matter and handwave the one thing most people had an issue with concerning the amnesia plotline. C'mon.
@@voxomnes9537 You really think Oda didnt plan that plotline? Sabo was planned probably since Oda designed Ace and the use of this trope (amensia) surely wasnt a last moment thought. And I know Oda isnt the master thinker that a lot of people say but precisely in this case I don't see how this wasnt planned. And also, being convenient isnt a reason to call it bad for me, every moment and narrative device of a story is convenient, storys are a consecutive chain of conveniences, the thing that makes them bad or good are the coherency and execution of those conveniences.
@@miguelfelix6338 these niggas are acting like, a random lightning bolt saving Luffy wasn't convenient, Kuma being a revolutionary wasn't convenient, Luffy falling in the sea and getting saved by Law's crew out of nowhere wasn't convenient lol.
Honestly, i don't mind the amnesia thing here since unlike OTHER amnesia plots, we don't spend time with Sabo WHILE being in his amnesia state & later relearning his memories, which would've been VERY annoying.
Ace never had the mindset that he'd have needed to reshape the world of one piece, he was completely devoted to whitebeard, not to something like becoming pirate king. Sabo follows Dragon, but so far, he seems devoted to his ideals more than to Dragon, and when his ideals are to tear down the world nobles and he's willing to fight the Marines greatest weapons, he has the potential to be a pirate king level threat.
It's wild how sometimes it becomes clear how well defined future Oda has for some of his characters that when you look back it becomes obvious, however week to week it isn't apparent.
I've never understood the idea that sabo was a "replacement" ace. Their roles in the story are completely different and their only notable similarity, the flame flame fruit, was an intentional choice as it showed the "inherited will" of ace.
honestly my only gripe with sabo's character comes in the fact that the flashback that introduced him to us came after ace's death... i know there were some hints like the sake cups much earlier on in the story, but had oda introduced him or the entire flashback of his past before ace's death; firstly it would have had a stronger impact, his return would have felt more justified because his introduction wouldn't have felt weak/awkward like it did coming after ace's death. however, that entire thing may have been part of oda's plan, so i'm curious to see if the placement of the chapters is meant to signify or parallel with something coming up regarding sabo's role
If anything I find certain aspects of Sabo more interesting than Ace. Born into the world of nobility and rampant injustice he went on to reject that life for a life of freedom only to have it ripped away seemingly by the Gods of this world that have their heels on the necks of the people in every ocean, every nation. That very act of freedom miraculously led him to Dragon, a man so boldly in line to be against the world itself. He may not have the spirit of a conqueror, but his simple desires even as a child burned even hotter as he grew into a key figure of the revolutionaries by sheer happenstance. Now he's revered across the world as the Flame Emperor rivaling even Dragon in terms of charisma. Its such an amazing thing to see how Sabo's journey has unfolded, but only time will tell how it ends.
Him having sabo still hit me hard personally. watching a brother go to prison for a long time and my other die. Everyday I wish this was one piece world and I can save my only brother.
Posttimeskip Sabo with the fire logia being stronger than Pretimeskip Ace is not a big deal. Also this whole flame emperor thing isn't really based on power and its mostly propaganda.
I feel like Sabo got the title, Flame emperor because he awakened his fruit, and I also feel like we haven't had solid confirmation of Yamato joining the crew cuz Luffy's gonna be like, You need to protect Wano from threats like Green Bull or something like that
Even though it was what he needed the most (a father figure), Ace limited his growth/ceiling by joining the White Beard pirates. So, when compared to Sobo, there was a continuing storyline for him, that wasn’t necessarily there for Ace.
To be honest, it´s gonna be kinda boring if Sabo faces Akainu instead of Luffy. Like Ace vs Sakazuki 2, but this time it´s Ace without confidence issues
@@MixedUpColors yall are funny. It makes more sense though. Besides let's stop with the Akainu vs Luffy narrative ✋️ Luffy is way stronger than Akainu. Luffy is far stronger. Yonko > Admiral. When the walls fall and Luffy dismantles the WG, Do you think Garp is gonna be on Akainu's side still. He's gonna fight him. Payback and redemption.. Luffy and Sabo need none. @@bagofhotchips2585 Garp is never going to fight akainu and even if he does he’s going to lose lmao. Everyone knows yonko> admirals but fleet admiral is above a regular admiral. If the admirals and fleet admirals are push overs there’s literally no stakes for luffy now that he’s a yonko it wouldn’t make sense narratively for there to be no marines left that pose a threat to the straw hats
Sabo dying in luffy's youth was to stoke the fire in him to get stronger .... Making Ace and luffy train for years ... Ace dying right in front of luffy's eyes and shattering his will made him realize he wasn't as strong as he thought making him go train again for two years .. Sabo returning was to ease that burden off luffy's shoulders in order for him to make his own dreams and will a reality
Interesting video as always Morj. However I can't stand the Sabo is an Ace replacement. I understand that Sabo gets a lot of hate for being seen as an Ace replacement but Ace and Sabo are different characters you even stated he was always different from Luffy and Ace. Sabo was the more calm and strategic brother. Sabo was the first to venture out to be a pirate before the other two. Also people keep mentioning how strong Sabo can be and how some are wondering if he should have conquers haki or not and that his parents aren't special. Sabo literally came from a noble background the fact his brother made it to the reverie shows the potential Sabo could have reached. Also Sabo behaves almost completely different then when he was a kid, because back then he was calm and smart and now he's more wild and very angry which is probably due to the oppression he's seen through out his journey with the revolutionary. Also I think Ace was never as strong as people let him out to be potential yes but strong no. Also why is everyone acting like we weren't following luffy and the strawhats the entire time so this idea of Ace being the chosen to me is just wild. Luffy has always shown more signs of this then Ace and as the readers we see this first hand so just because Roger, Whitebeard, and Sengoku thought so we as the readers actually know who it is so this theme of Ace being the sun should really be dead I get it but now we should give it a rest. It almost feels like ever since the time skip we have been on a Ace redemption ark and I hope it ended on Wano. Lastly all those people who never thought Sabo was strong or was a relevant character that deserved attention just rewatch ASL.
@@Chillaxorita lol why do you say that? I really enjoy Sabo as a character much more than Ace. My main issue with Morj was that fact that he had some hate/disdain for Sabo as a replacement brother and couldn't see the bigger picture that Oda had in store. I've personally always loved/preferred Sabo over Ace but I was always left feeling the same as Morj did with how he was introduced into the story/replacing Ace/potentially causing Marineford 2.0 (which is a theory i hated). I was always curious as to what Oda had planned for him and after this chapter. Shiiiieeeet lets fuckin GO!! We definitely seeing an awakened Sabo come end of One Piece.
Crazy that it took you this long to realize this it was obvious since the scene when sabo told dragon about the royals as a kid, he is a child of royal blood who is against the corruption of the monarchy.
I think it's so cool that sabos title is the name of the final attack ace used against blackbeard I'm not sure if there is deeper meaning to that but its cool even if theres not
Skypia speaks of luffy, sabo, and ace in what they represent. Luffy wants to be king of the pirates “a man’s dream”, ace was the king of the pirates son and could’ve continued that mantle but was killed and it could’ve ended the inherited will but sabo ate the fire fire fruit 2 years after and continued aces “inherited will” as brother hood. Now it’s up to luffy and sabo to change the “flow of time” which is already in the process of changing
Feels like Ace been passed up by Luffy and Sabo for some time now but who knows he fought Yamamoto who is pretty strong which says a lot about pre time skip Blackbeard.
Sabo is another side of a main character....he is a noble and still chose to live and be with common people just to do what is right...he hated injustice and he'll do anything to make things right...he doesnt care about pirate or cleatial dragon or noble or marine, all he wanted to do is make the world better....thats what they show the very first time they introduce sabo in the story when they were still kids....so ofcourse hes gonna be a a bigger factor than ace who only live for his family name
I’d argue he already has, Ace made waves only because of who he was related to and it caused the end of Whitebeards era. But Whitebeard came on with the clutch and shook the world one last time with his final words. Sabo on the other hand has caused Tsunamis in the background being the second in command of the Revolutionaries and the world and even is readers didn’t even know of his existence until he wanted to be known. He just casually goes to Dressrosa and takes Ace’s fruit, makes short work of the Marines and enemies and just heads out like it was a casual Friday. Then he just goes to the Reverie to take back his friend something that should have been a Marineford level event. Not due to Kumo being as valuable as Ace or the numbers but it’s the World government. All of the Kings and Celestial Dragons are there and all the powerhouses are in attendance that aren’t Pirates. And Sabos like, yo ima take back my friend and let you get back to business. Bye ✌️ not even 2 admirals could stop him and I doubt that’s all they threw at him. Throw in a few Vice admirals and CP members as well.
Agree, the longer the chapter, the more Sabo exist as another brother for Luffy make sense. This three brother, the only one of them that really have vast knowledge, would be Sabo. His the rich kid that run away because of his real family. Sabo will definitely play a bigger role in the future with the new generations. His already training Haki before getting the Logia fruit, his definitely gonna be a better Fire User. If Sabo gonna get Conqueror Haki, yeap, his fighting will be on another level from Ace.
Me upon seeing the title: Dude, seriously? I'd think it was obvious he already surpassed Ace. If we're talking fighting ability, yes he surpassed him long ago. If we're talking devil fruit, yes guaranteed he'll surpass him. If we're talking status or fame, he already has. If we're talking bounties, he already has. Man this is redundant. Me upon seeing more of the video: Okay so you meant the overall narrative of One Piece. Still feel its obvious he'll eventually surpass Ace in that regard too. He's 2nd in command to the most wanted man. Dying in One Piece on screen does give Ace a head start but keep in mind that Sabo in the polls is right there with Ace too. So he is already a fan favorite.
Great points Morj. It's like Luffy has said himself he's not and doesn't want to be a hero, he is a pirate. Sabo is the hero.
hit the nail on the head
@@osonhouston Um... yeah, I think that's the point of the character (?) xD
I mean, I knew that, he wants to end social inequality c:
I love that Morj clarifies this isn’t a powerscaling discussion within the first 30 seconds of the video. But half the comments are still just powerscaling Sabo to Ace.
Thats all they do, their favourite characters in anime are based on who is stronger, and as stronger characters appear they favorites change, its so lame tbh.
Too complex discussions when it requires to think outside any box
@@velho6298 C'mon his videos are never _that_ complex.. you're sounding like a Rick and Morty fan. They're well thought out but any one piece fan could understand them if they just pay a little attention...
i was about to say sabo was already stronger the moment i clicked till i saw this
I don't like most powerscalers myself but what is there even to discuss, Sabo is clearly superior
@@thetruth997_ Sabo propaganda is something I can get behind.
wasn't one of Ace's attacks called Flame Emperor?
I think Sabo’s importance may be Dragon’s intention. He was very impressed by Sabo when he found him. I think he sees Sabo as the perfect protege he can train and mold into someone capable of leading the new world they create.
exactly. I think the older generation may bow out in a more graceful manner than a lot of people think
Impressed? Dragon was disgusted and shocked that the country would make a child of nobility hate being nobility because of their horrendous treatment of the masses. I still agree with you but I wouldn't use the word impressed personally
@@france_d_robin he was impressed by sabos will to survive and potential
of course the circumstances around that discovery were shocking and disturbing
Just like how WB wanted to make ace PK
Yeah that's potrail when dragon hears why sabo hate born as a noble
Very true.
such a good take
Thanks you guys, really appreciate the kind words 🙂
This was such a good take. I’mma ss this Asha share it with friends…..
Well said!
You can't change the world and you accept that, so you do what you can for yourself and loved ones."
This is deeply American and should not be generalized but besides this, good points.
@@voxomnes9537 Oops, you're right, and I was projecting. Well, I don't live like that anymore, but I find myself actively criticizing that aspect of my friends and family. Anyway, thank you for pointing that out
@@voxomnes9537 good point!
Sabo in the endgame of one piece is going to be an icon. His fame will be so world renowned that I think it will rival Luffy’s. I hope during the final war we get a Luffy Sabo team up panel like the one we got in marineford.
Would be cool if Sabo had a similar bounty to Luffy rn xD
@@editimpact66 it should definitely be at least a billion
@@Shark-hn4mvthat's dumb luffy doesn't feel better about ace because of sabo and neither do you
"nothing lessens the loss of ace"
The scene of jimbei reminding luffy of his crew did literally just that for luffy.
People were too fixated on Sabo seeming like a stand-in for Ace, not realizing that his true role in the story was to be Dragon's Che Guevarra
Ew. Another history revisionist.
Lol
It’s not meant to be Sabo’s throne, he stole the throne of Goa by marrying the princess then killing her parents.
@@pbtenchi big oof. I wasnt aware. Thats dark lol

After Ace died Dragon probably didn't see a reason to keep erasing his memory anymore, especially now that heir plans are coming into fruition.
i watched this video just to say this
Why Sabo Has The Potential To Surpass Ace
Me: cause he is still alive
It all makes sense. It's not enough that Luffy defeats Blackbeard or Akainu or Imu, because when old rule is taken out, there will always be a powervacuum. A vacuum that someone or something will always fill no matter what. It's only a matter of time. Luffy does not care anything like that, he doesn't care who rules what. What we need is someone like Sabo to fill that vacuum, to make sure that the change after removing the old system is actually a change for the better in the world. I would not be too surprised if at the end of the story Sabo would take or be made to take the mantell to be new just king of the world, or something along those lines.
Sabo and a few good men showing they are not pushovers 🔥
This statement always kills the shit out of me with laughter.

Fujitora:We're actually birds of a feather here. The navy can't be the hero to this country... it ain't our place!!!
Sabo:If anyone finds out what you're thinking
Fujitora: All they'll see is that I couldn't get past ya...
Sabo:It really is a gamble then
Fujitora:Heh Heh...
@@BBreezybaby114 a man of culture
I love Sabo deviated from Ace 2.0 into his own important character during his reintroduction up to this point.
Yea cause he’s alive and not a donut 🍩
I think playing “brother math” is pretty disingenuous and silly. In real life if you lost a brother and found out your lost brother has returned you’d still be devastated for the loss just like Luffy was. I thought that point was really dumb.
Yea it didn't really make sense. Like if Yasopp went back to Usopp does it cancel out his mothers death?
It doesn't cancel. But it does lessen the blow.
Its like an airbag in a car crash. The car is still lost. You broke lots of bone. You were crushed, But you weren't crushed to death
@@poutineausyropderable7108 To me that airbag was Luffy still having his crew. He probably would have died if they weren't there to "cushion the blow". I mean do you think Luffy loves his brother more than his crew? Does he play favorites in the crew? His crew is also his family. Sabo is just his family in a separate way.
From a story perspective it definitely makes it seem like it was too lessen the blow

To me he already surpassed him. He went above and beyond his potential and created a name for himself, while Ace ended up being remembered more for being Rogers son instead of his own legacy as a great pirate. Sabo just created his own legacy and was dubbed the name “Flame Emperor”
I mean... He was called fire fist Ace! No one knew he was Roger's son until the war. The second division commander of an emperor.
Brotherhood of the Dawn
Raised by Curly Da Dawn
The potential? He was as soon as he got the flame-flame fruit LMFAO
Another great one Morj. Gosh ur big brain knowledge is too much for me. U always brung out such interesting things no one ever thought about

@@jjack3136 I feel the same as the guy above you. Ace when he was first introduced felt like a cliche cool older brother that was a lil smarter than the main character but just as much of a hot head. Concise and well thought out as always Morj, cheers
As a Sabo fan, I'm soooo glad of the direction Oda is taking his character
I don't see how the quote is relevant when haki (will power) is the main focus of the history
I also don't think is some kind of debility, like crocodile's fruit versus water
His Haki is off the charts. He was whooping ass even without his devil fruit and now he is just on a different level.
Sabo is a prince Vivi is a princess. Knowing one pieces love of traditional monarchy there is probably something there.

I’m so scared that Dragon is being phased out before he had time to be significant
I like this Luffy's an Anarchist Agenda that's forming amongst the creators today lol Huge Fan

5:11 I feel really related to you concerning Sabo replacing Ace, with the exception that I never actually thought he was gonna be used in that "damsel-in-distress" MF scenario. It would be just too plainly repetitive, even for him! xD
I also never cared for him as other fans did, exactly, you put it into words: it's not that I didn't like him, after all I LOVED Sabo as a kid.... but those reasons you mentioned drastically lowered my interest on him, pretty much.
Sabo basically seems like he will be the public/political face for changing the world into a better, freest place (and "for Luffy", so to say, as Luffy will NEVER want to be a hero/someone important with expectations and responsibilities). That way Sabo will be an important figure without being corrupted (achieving his dream), while Luffy will still be the freest man ever a the end of this story (achieving his dream too) :)
PD: loved that little analysis of Vivi's rol as well. I think it's spot on. She's another Mugiwara, but she is probably the most "public/political" of the crew as Sabo is too lol.

This is my favortie OP discussion chanell. You Mr Morj are a smooth talker hahahaha
Honestly, i don't mind the amnesia thing here since unlike OTHER amnesia plots, we don't spend time with Sabo WHILE being in his amnesia state & later relearning his memories, which would've been VERY annoying.
is this a way to foreshadow imu and joyboy being sworn brothers? if so... damn
Wow, what an analysis. It is lovely listening to Mr. Morj lectures about this type of material in One Piece. Don't ever miss his class, guys! Zehaha
Why Sabo Has The Potential To Be Greater Than Ace
"he is alive"
I think Sabo will be the catalyst for the conflict or just the revolutionaries in general
Him having sabo still hit me hard personally. watching a brother go to prison for a long time and my other die. Everyday I wish this was one piece world and I can save my only brother.
Sabo already surpassed ace
yep
That's power wise. He ain't talking about that.
@@obitotard9771 yeah True
Posttimeskip Sabo with the fire logia being stronger than Pretimeskip Ace is not a big deal. Also this whole flame emperor thing isn't really based on power and its mostly propaganda.
No really 🤓
Waiting for Hancock to return to the main story 🏴☠️
Brilliant as always. Loved it
I feel like Sabo got the title, Flame emperor because he awakened his fruit, and I also feel like we haven't had solid confirmation of Yamato joining the crew cuz Luffy's gonna be like, You need to protect Wano from threats like Green Bull or something like that
Why Sabo has the potential to be greater than ace...
He's alive
Even though it was what he needed the most (a father figure), Ace limited his growth/ceiling by joining the White Beard pirates. So, when compared to Sobo, there was a continuing storyline for him, that wasn’t necessarily there for Ace.
Great video. Very well researched
To be honest, it´s gonna be kinda boring if Sabo faces Akainu instead of Luffy. Like Ace vs Sakazuki 2, but this time it´s Ace without confidence issues
Garp is higher on the totem pole on who needs to defeat Sakazuki.
@@bagofhotchips2585 he never will
@@MixedUpColors yall are funny. It makes more sense though. Besides let's stop with the Akainu vs Luffy narrative ✋️ Luffy is way stronger than Akainu. Luffy is far stronger. Yonko > Admiral.
Anyways, Garp needs the redemption more than Anyone. He's possibly top 7 in the verse right now and he has done NOTHING. When the walls fall and Luffy dismantles the WG, Do you think Garp is gonna be on Akainu's side still.
He's gonna fight him. Payback and redemption.. Luffy and Sabo need none. Sabo didn't know, and Luffy did everything to save Ace. Garp did nothing.
@@bagofhotchips2585 it would make more sense for sabo to fight akainu than Garp and it would make more sense for luffy to fight akainu than Garp
Sabo is op since he mastered haki since he was 15 already so now with devil fruit he is op
sabo is fleet admiral level
Hey man ... this chapter changed my mind about sabo 2
It's because Sabo is still alive. Ace can't ever get better than he was because he's dead. All other reasons are just fluff
But Morj and others see it now. #saboandafewgoodmen.
@@Chillaxorita thanks for the trolling I understand where you and Morj are coming from.
I had the exact same thoughts about Sabo, Excellent video.
Video title: why sabo has the potential to be greater than ace
Me (before even seeing the video) : Ummm coz he's alive?🌝
Sabo is already greater than Ace.
Luffy and Ace are Conquerors.
Sabo is a King.
I love the Dragon Ball reference of the thumbnail lol.
The Meta Answer: Sabo is Post-Timeskip. Ace is Pre-Timeskip.
I miss the videos where Morj sat on that beautiful living room.
This makes a lot of sense and it lines up quite nicely
Happy birthday Morj
A lotta words for "I judged the book by it's cover"
