It's time for something self-indulgent once again. As soon as I finished Shiika's route in this game I pretty much threw myself onto my computer and started writing this scipt. Which in-turn only made my love for Shiika grow even more. At this point I can confidently say that I feel nothing but pride for my Austrian idol daughter and I want nothing but happniess for her.

I checked the older ones and they look okay, but this one actually look anime come to life in 3D.
OmegaReviews and animations, wonky or flat out jagged animations are never a good thing for the eye to behold but that’s another thing they did well here, the animations are nice and fluid, helping the overall viewing experience. :D

Please keep doing nerdy analysis videos like these! I’ve grown up always associating rivals as antagonists with smooth god like statuses and this was a great way to talk about how there’s more to making a good rival than just that same formula. :)

This vid came up to me by a random share and wow, I was always waiting for someone who speaks english to cover how great Stella Stage was despite it's shortcomings. Idolm@ster is a series that has it's golden place in my heart, and just cause of this video you've earned my sub. I hope you do more imas.
First, this was very insightful, you articulated your points really well.
I've been fascinated by the idea of a rivalry not based on hate, revenge, jealousy.
While there are many examples in anime/books/movies, in gaming only one I can think is *Dante and Vergil from Devil May Cry 3* . It was competitive and had just enough similarities and contrasts to make them engage in fights (and get pleasure out of it). Even then, there was a motivation (in the game) to defeat because he was threatening humanity.
I hesitate to call Shiika a "sympathetic villain" , but the game does make you stand on the side of the rival. I've rarely seen that in games (unless there is another unlocalized Japan only games I don't know about).
Hemang Chauhan Good rivalry was also Squall and Seifer from FFVIII. No matter how much off a dick he was, Seifer always thought of Squall as his best friend.
Same thing can be said for Sam and Raiden in MGR,they clearly weren't fighting each other because they worked for opposing factions (for the most part),no they actually fought because they had so much in common!
Platinium games knows how to make a good rivalry!
Metal Gear Solid 3. I don't think it was romantic love, but I think The Boss and Snake where a weird kind of soul mate that history had to pull apart. It's very obvious he loses a piece of himself even though he wins the final fight against her. In fact Metal Gear as a series is absolutely full of sympathetic antagonist, but I'd say that particular relationship embodies what you mean more than any.
Maybe this is how Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima from the Yakuza series relate. Majima thinks that despite being an ally to Kiryu, he's the only one who has the right to kill him, making him an ally but also a rival.
What about Red and Blue in Pokemon Red and Blue. lol.

i'm right there with you. i've been a fan of idolmaster since around 2007/08. i've learned to play the game intuitively. the game is well designed, so it's pretty easy to play the more you try.
Stella Stage is an amazing game. The graphics are literally the most impressive anime renderings I've ever seen!
At least it isn't Super Robot Wars.

I've only gotten into Idolmaster cause of Cinderella Girls haha, so happy cause I gave the overall series a chance cause of it. Made me super happy getting the Idolmaster costumes on Zestiria/Berseria and really want to play this game also now. Thanks for the rival review thingy.

This was a pleasantly surprising departure from the usual Drakengard/Nier shenanigans. I was always a backseat fan of im@s since the arcade days, but thanks to the language barrier I could never really get into it game-wise so I love breakdowns like these. Thank you for this.
Not a video I was expecting from this channel, but a welcome one regardless. The reason why I think Shiika turned out the way she did was because they approached her with a "heroine first, rival second" mentality, so they put in as much effort for her as they would your other idols, and I'm certain they're planning on making her be one of the playable girls eventually because IIRC, some of the girls used to be rivals in the older titles too.
Why does every game you talk about sound so interesting and make me want to play in the exact same moment even if I have never even thought about doing so?

I just started Stella Stage a few days ago, and, when first meeting Shika, I had to do a metaphorical double-take because of how sweet she was, completely different from the kind of rival I was expecting to be dealing with. With a voice as wonderful as hers, it would be a shame if her legacy ended here!
It's not often I see a video essay on Idolm@ster. I've been a fan of the series since the beginning but never got into each game's stories due to the lack of readily available transactions. Thank you for creating this video and now I'm a fan of Shika.

This reminds me of Funny Valentine from JJBA SBR. He was the antagonist but not the "villain", he has his own purpose and goal and code of moral and he follows it through and through. His character in SBR isn't the typical "the bad guy the heroes have to defeat", but just another man trying his best at achieving his dream.
I've never understood that tbh. He really was an evil guy and did so many horrible things throughout the manga all so that he can direct all the good fortune of the world to make America no1. Make his country powerful at the expense of everywhere else.

The rivalry on idolmaster have many levels: Jupiter, Leon, Project Fairy, Mai Hidaka (in dearly start as the main goal of Ai) and Mishiro.
At that point of rivalry, Mishiro in the anime of Cinderella Girls with the Project Krone, also offered a great rivalry, not only for being the boss of the producer, but for having selected idols.
His production of Mishiro was exemplary in the sense of creating the possible image of the idol with the best result for the company, without using low-caliber tricks, but with a high-level production. (Though the Producer take the risk of suspending Cinderella project if thy don't achieve better results than the Krone project.)
Unfortunately there were not many opportunities for the idols to interact in this rivalry until the decisive moment. The idea was good but required more time >_<
It is possible that Shiika appears in Million Live Theater Days, since her father keeps appearing in this game, to be more precise in the Standing Alive event.
Idolmaster Subs Mishiro is a great example and I wouldn't be against talking about her in another video, but I wanted to talk about the main series of games this time and not the spin-offs.

What about Ryuuguu Komachi? I don't know much of older games story, but weren't they kind of rivals for the rest of 765pro? (also in anim@s, and Ryuuguu Komachi episodes were much more interesting and less cringey for me than 961pro ones)

Just in case it hasn't been mentioned in the comments here before yet, Shika is actually available in the Million Live! Theater Days mobage. She was available for an event and comes as an EX-type card as opposed to the Princess/Fairy/Angel type cards. Since the event is long over, she is only obtainable through one of the game's shops at the cost of Platinum Star Tour (PST) stones, which are rare materials. If you haven't played or gotten her yet, around this time would be good to play since there is a PST event going on now and that's the best time to get them to buy her.
I know you were talking about how good the rivals are but, this animation is great. 👍🏾

I've never heard of Idolmaster or considered playing a rhythm game before this (I know I know, it's kind of ignorant) but now I am very intrigued! I'm glad this channel covers rather niche games like this one, otherwise I probably wouldn't even hear about them.

Holy shit that's amazing because I thought only me and my friend were the only ones that know about idolmaster because he got me into the series by listening to one of their songs and I fell in love with the series. An actual rival that's nice and isn't an asshole damn Namco where was this in most of your games? But real talk she sounds like a really nice girl and seeing as I already like the girls in the main series, it's no surprise that by your description I can feel like I could get along with this girl. I agree it's a crime that we don't have any of the games in the main series except for if you can call it references in some of the recent Tales games with costumes like Velvet, Magilou and Eleanor all dressed up as idolmaster idols and same goes for the girls in Tales of Xillia as well but that's not enough. Really fun video you made here and nice going with the Kirby's Epic Yarn music playing in the background so cute.

@@lucaswibisono1316 Yeah, personally I really liked the further developement and characterization DMC5 gave him and the way it kinda brought his rivalry with Dante a full circle. Two of them starting off with this borderline obsessive intrinsic want for other's destruction, that had lost any further reason beyond ending each other, signifying how it had clearly gone too far to a point where someone had to step in and stop it to make them see sense again and with that new found clarity their rivalry essentially reverted back into harmless scuffling they used engage in and would bond over when they were children. If it truly is the narrative end for both Dante and Vergil's journey in DMC, it's a really nice note to end on.

I definitely enjoyed the video even with it being fairly random as hell. I know nothing of the series and honestly have no intentions of playing it, BUT, I definitely appreciate the video as a whole and must certainly commend the devs for their hard work with the animations and making them actually enjoyable.
Though static 2D anime images have a place in dialogue sequences, these fully animated in-game character models during said sequences is really cool and I respect that a ton simply for the fact that it’s damn near unheard of (for me personally) during segments like that.

This is one thing I agree with about rivals in general: they don’t have to be jerkasses to others or in general in order to be well written rivals.
One of my favorite rivals in gaming was Cheren from Pokemon Black and White. What stood out for him was his desire to be strong and trying to find his reason to do such all while he supports you throughout the game.
I kinda wish there was more rivals like this in general that aren’t one note or too predictable.
This is the first time I've seen Idolmaster's gameplay. I always knew they were games but never even considered what the gameplay would be like.
