Used 4Runners, while usually more than a Explorer, Trailblazer, Grand Cherokee, etc, they are very VERY worth the extra dough
And 9 times out of 10 will actually cost you less in the long run as you rarely have to fix a 4Runner but you will the others, and they will be worth more when you go to get rid of it too

True dat. Was searching for one for a few months and gave up. People be like "here's my 1998 4Runner with 285,000 miles...$6,000 plz." I ended up buying a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 short bed regular cab from an old man. Only has 53,000 miles on it. The thing is, these 4Runners aren't selling. I see the same ones reposted over and over again on FB and CL and the sellers will not budge on price. Trucks in general are all insanely over-priced right now, no matter the brand. And if you're looking for a diesel, forget it--they all have over 250k on them.

There was a truck parked in someone's yard near me, possibly old as time itself with the rust to prove it. The asking price was $7000 or something outrageous. Are these people being serious or simply naive? Many of the same trucks are occasionally seen driving around. Grill's long gone, one headlight housing missing, rear bumper is halfway on, and it sputters upon acceleration reaching 40mph in 3.5 minutes.

The frames in the Tacoma and 4runner are actually completely different. The Tacoma uses a compound boxed and C-channel frame made in the US by Dana and was the subject of a class action lawsuit and recall in the 1st and 2nd gens due to rust. The 4runner frame is fully boxed and based on the Land Cruiser Prado platform which also is used by the FJ Cruiser and Lexus GX. Part of the reason I decided on a 6mt FJ over a Tacoma.

I have been driving my 2008 SR5 4Runner for 15 years now, with no problems at all (with normal dealer fluid servicing). I still get 20.1 mpg in the warm months, and everything still looks and works like new. no squeaks or noises at all. All I have had to do is change tires once, everything else is original, shocks, brakes, paint, interior, etc.

The 4Runner and Tacoma actually do not share a frame. Tacoma used a US sourced [Dana Corp] C-Channel frame, while the 4Runner is on the Landcruiser Prado 120 series Boxed frame [same as FJ Cruiser / Lexus GX]. Also Tacoma's had a frame recall for 1996-2010, 4Runner did not although they do also rust just not as bad.

Absolute beast of a vehicle, especially in its V8 variant. Not terribly handsome but for heaven's sake a car that looks like a soccer mom SUV but can go just about anywhere on this planet and has stellar, refined road manners is a very very cool thing! The 5th-gen 4Runners are more attractive and comfy to be sure, but I don't think they are nearly as pure a design concept and damn they are slow.
