I do not know if anyone else has noticed this, but the use in this arrangement of a song about the mind that spins almost uncontrollably of the glass harmonica, an instrument that in order to produce a sound must physically spin, is both, symbolically powerful and hauntingly beautiful. The arranger commands all my respect.
Yes and it's also a great metaphor for the alchemical nature and cycles of life and the universe too. Supposedly light and time work in a spiral, not linear as we assume. (Look up Walter Russell) So this song is very metaphysical too. It also refects the Buddhist and Hindu concept of the cycle of life with no beginning or end either.
Lyrics of this beautiful song was from Mrs. Marilyn Bergman, died last week. She was 93 y/o. She also gave us THE WAY WE WERE and songs from YENTL. RIP
Had quite forgotten this wonderful song. Something; can`t say what, suddenly brought it to mind. Far too good to be left behind. So now it`s back. Love it!
Don't be sorry for any typos etc,oak croissant!!! This one is one of the best songs of the twentieth century performed by the great voice of Alison Moyet! I bow to you for your choice! Thank you!
It is rare to find a song that reflects one's own life but this one does: it is my life all over again in all its poignancy and its passion, all the doubts and its half-hearted hope.
I certainly hope that you read this. I listened to your music in the early years and by sheer accident after trying to remember a song my father used to play in his Jensen Interceptor we meet again in a strange way I feel that we have aged gracefully, thank you for your beautiful voice and your beautiful choices.
Truly FANTASTIC! Hauntingly beautiful, emotionally evocative... This has not aged and never will. The original Michel Legrand (RIP) 1978 song was in French: LES MOULINS DE MON COEUR... In both languages a real masterpiece which is why it has so many covers and cannot be forgotten.
One of the first pieces i learned on guitar. The line 1.09 "like a tunnel that you follow, to a tunnel of it's own. Down a hollow to a cavern, where the sun has never shone" has always stuck with me! mind you, the lyrics of this entire song. Describes the thought process i go through, as an adult, when I'm trying to understand someones suffering, who's been controlled and used by others! ILY always.

I have a musicbox shaped like a windmill that plays this song. It used to be my great uncles before it was given to me. I always wanted to know what the song it played was called, and truly this is one of the most beautiful songs ive heard
About six months ago I finally found a copper windmill music box that plays this song after four years of searching. I only found them on eBay and thought that the shipping cost was not worth it as a few listings had the shipping costing more than the music box itself. I also have a porcelain doll that plays the song as well.
I have always loved this song sung by many. I did not realise there was such an instrument as a glass harmonica let alone that I was listening to one, thank you Mathew B clearly a purveyor of music and I will listen to your recommendations. Thanks again. I do so love every version of this song..........

Round, like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel, Never ending or beginning on an ever-spinning reel, Like a snowball down a mountain or a carnival balloon, Like a carousel that's turning, running rings around the moon, Like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of its face, And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space, Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind Like a tunnel that you follow to a tunnel of its own, Down a hollow to a cavern where the sun has never shone, Like a door that keeps revolving in a half-forgotten dream, Or the ripples from a pebble someone tosses in a stream, Like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of its face, And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind Keys that jingle in your pocket, words that jangle in your head, Why did summer go so quickly? Was it something that you said? Lovers walk along a shore and leave their footprints in the sand, Is the sound of distant drumming just the fingers of your hand? Pictures hanging in a hallway and the fragment of a song, Half-remembered names of faces but to whom do they belong? When you knew that it was over you were suddenly aware, That the autumn leaves were turning to the colour of her hair, Like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel, Never ending or beginning, on an ever-spinning reel, As the images unwind ( feel) like the circles that you find, In the windmills of your mind.
Such a beautiful arrangement by Anne Dudley. Who else would have used the glass harmonica like that? A stroke of genius! I bought the "Voice" album on the strength of this song, and I wasn't disappointed. If you get the chance, listen to "God give me strength" and "La chanson des vieux amants".
RIP Michael LeGrand. This song, Le Chanson Des Jumelles, Le Chanson De Maxence, and I Will Wait For You are my favorites by him, but all his work was exemplary.
Absolument!
La chanson des vieux amants"...............the Song of Old Lovers is a song I could listen forever ....... Micheline Van Hautem does the best rendition of this song Jacques Brel would be proud of her..........I saw her live at the Melbourne Arts Festival and she is one hell of a performer.....mesmerising performer SPELL BOUND BY HER TOTALLY
Yes, but Brel is another story... Do you know the musical " Jacques Brel is alive and well and living in Paris..." with the incredible translations and adaptations of Mortimer Shumann who was a great friend of Brel. For me Brel's most poignant song is "Les Vieux/The Old Ones" because I am getting there and the clock here is speaking to ME too... in the original French! "Qui dit OUI, qui dit NON, qui dit JE VOUS ATTENDS." Now... where Brel's song concentrates on the slowing down until the end, this Legrand song recalls the vortex of life and the perpetuation of love. It makes me think of the 1995 film "Bridges of Madison County" (Meryl Streep/ Clint Eastwood) where the children eventually refuel for Love at the very soul of their mother and of her brief and powerful secret love story!
I love this song but weirdly I seem to remember a line that went "And the autumn leaves were turning to the colour of her hair" I had the feeling that the reference to Autumn in the song is of a time of our life where we are aging and the mind is becoming forgetful.
fine. Moyet doesn't do anything outside perfection...however, the song demands a note of desperation: it's best performed as someone clutching at time, slipping away from you
I too forgot the amazing vocal range of Alison Moyet. I agree that there is no obvious story to her cover. But her voice is lovely enough to just enjoy. I don't know who wrote this song. From the first time I heard it (sung by a man) it sounded clever but rambling, like great lyrics but confusion as to what point it was making, or was the point confusion? Anyone know who wrote it & its story?
Hi! I've looked at a couple of sites, and it looks like the consensus is: "the ripples from a pebble", and that's what I have in the video (at 1:28). Thanks!
Even a Manila police Dino, a funeral parlor business operator. I wonder what kind of a person our president adviser came from. Because of political ambitions, his alliance must be scrutinized in performance. I dont know how to describe our 1st lady, never at my age seen a senior lady with thin hands and bulging eyes like robotic figure, yet, she claimed as a lawyer. She needs a palace in England or a castle in Japan. There are many beaches in Phl. No need of a rolls royce grand entrance. Barefoot is better!!!!
An islands of diversity or a snake like island. When you like to plant a seed for food for our dining table, you must study its nutrients it may gave to your beautiful kids. Or buying a useful product for a family delights while at home as a loving mother. No children eats paper towels either!!!!
I'm would like to I a version of this that's been running through my mind..need a few musicians who can think out a the box .flute..piano..violin and guitar..my guitar was destroyed by a temperamental imbecile

When poetry is set in music, this is what happens. Magnificent.
This song brings tears to my eyes. Sang it in the school choir 26 years ago, only now does it make sense. Thank you to the music ❤

This song crept into my consciousness today. Listening to this version and reading the lyrics brought tears to my eyes.
This song is hauntingly beautiful, that so many artists made their version.

Beautiful poetic lyrics by a beautiful talented singer. Alison remains a great vocalist. Brilliant song!

Bellisima interpretacion. Hermosa melodia y poema!!! Gracias!!!
The movie ‘’Nine perfect strangers’’ brought me here. That’s my first time hearing this song. The lyrics and the music are simply masterly 🙏🏾
Just because of the serie I am right here listening🙏🙏
Omg same!!! This is a masterpiece!
The song was a top 40 hit in 1969 sung by Dusty Springfield. There is also an up tempo version of the song from the Muppet Show.
from my youth…a favourite and also a great bit of symbolic poetry.
I love this version! Had the pleasure of hearing her sing it live
What is the meaning of the song?
It is rare to find a song that reflects one's own life but this one does: it is my life all over again in all its poignancy and its passion, all the doubts and its half-hearted hope.
Beautifully said Ms Perla...
The way each lyric is almost randomly rushed and slowed makes it feel more like a poem than a song, it’s really enthralling.
I certainly hope that you read this. i love this song. when i hear it, i have to cry. thanks
Round, like a circle in a spiral,
like a wheel within a wheel,
Never ending or beginning
on an ever-spinning reel,
Like a snowball down a mountain
or a carnival balloon,
Like a carousel that's turning, running rings around the moon,
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
past the minutes of its face,
And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space,
Like the circles that you find
in the windmills of your mind
Like a tunnel that you follow
to a tunnel of its own,
Down a hollow to a cavern
where the sun has never shone,
Like a door that keeps revolving
in a half-forgotten dream,
Or the ripples from a pebble someone tosses in a stream,
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
past the minutes of its face,
And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
in the windmills of your mind
Keys that jingle in your pocket, words that jangle in your head,
Why did summer go so quickly? Was it something that you said?
Lovers walk along a shore
and leave their footprints in the sand,
Is the sound of distant drumming just the fingers of your hand?
Pictures hanging in a hallway
and the fragment of a song,
Half-remembered names of faces but to whom do they belong?
When you knew that it was over
you were suddenly aware,
That the autumn leaves were turning
to the colour of her hair,
Like a circle in a spiral,
like a wheel within a wheel,
Never ending or beginning,
on an ever-spinning reel,
As the images unwind ( feel)
like the circles that you find,
In the windmills of your mind.
