Agreed. I was too young to see the Police Synchronicity tour in 1984 in Honolulu, but in 1996 I saw Sting at Nissan Pavilion in Virginia, and he played 4 Police songs, but not this one. Anyway, this performance is really tight, and I think this moment shows a band at its apex.
Totally agreed. I even like it better than the album version for some reason. Has more energy to it. A lot more. I think they fed off the audience on this one.
I'm a Stewart Copeland fan big time, but Sting's lyrics here are so perfect "there's a rich man sleeping on a golden bed, there's a skeleton choking on a crust of bread" oh God! Almost 40 years later and nothing's changed.
It's pretty awesome how when the crowd starts to sing the chorus near the end of the song you can tell how Sting is holding back tears. I think He had an "epiphany" and realized "I have made it... total success...". Pretty f---ing incredible. He even quickly wipes his nose and eyes. Such talent and emotion.
There's a little black spot on the sun today It's the same old thing as yesterday There's a black hat caught in the high tree top There's a flag pole rag and the wind won't stop I have stood here before inside the pouring rain With the world turning circles running 'round my brain I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign But it's my destiny to be the king of pain There's a little black spot on the sun today, that's my soul up there It's the same old thing as yesterday, that's my soul up there There's a black hat caught in a high tree top, that's my soul up there There's a flag pole rag and the wind won't stop, that's my soul up there I have stood here before inside the pouring rain With the world turning circles running 'round my brain I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign But it's my destiny to be the king of pain There's a fossil that's trapped in a high cliff wall, that's my soul up there There's a dead salmon frozen in a waterfall, that's my soul up there There's a blue whale beached by a springtide's ebb, that's my soul up there There's a butterfly trapped in a spider's web, that's my soul up there I have stood here before inside the pouring rain With the world turning circles running 'round my brain I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign But it's my destiny to be the king of pain There's a king on a throne with his eyes torn out There's a blind man looking for a shadow of doubt There's a rich man sleeping on a golden bed There's a skeleton choking on a crust of bread There's a red fox torn by a huntmen's pack, that's my soul up there There's a black winged gull with a broken back, that's my soul up there There's a little black spot on the sun today It's the same old thing as yesterday I have stood here before inside the pouring rain With the world turning circles running 'round my brain I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign But it's my destiny to be the king of pain King of pain King of pain, king of pain, I always be king of pain
The best, tightest, awesome background singer, live version of this song, Sting hammers the bass guitar really good on this one, crank it the fu$#k up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Perfect preformance....who would tell tha a 3 man band coud play so god and makes a perfect song, melodie and specially Lyric.... TALENT ! SIMPLE LIKE THAT
Has anybody else noticed the lyric change? In most of the early live performances, he sings "I guess I always thought that you could end this reign", but in the official recording and all of his later performances that lyric has been changed to "I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign". I wonder why that is? I much prefer the former to the latter, it has so much more depth...
in the cd version there's also a difference, he repeated the "blue whale beach with a springstide 's ebb" line twice...mistake that he doesn't make in the VIDEO version...
It was one of those evolving songs, after touring and playing it so many times, little tweeks were made here and there,..at least thats how i always saw it.. i like the studio version because its a faster beat but prefer this one because it has its own vibe, a little slower but more haunting, especially with the female singers
Here's a song to mimic life . No black spot maybe a few colors. King of pain no , free ways to pain , closer to the truth. Old time religion, very old time!
I walked twelve miles just one way the Lord showed up and this is what he said Tesla math is in your head . Give to those other children instead. It gone now out my head .
Sting is truly the Rolls Royce of song writers !
this is one of the most beautiful versions of "King Of Pain" live
Very true that's why I think I've watched 14 times
the guitar part goes through my soul
What a great song. The Police were a super band, and Sting kicked butt as a song writer.
Agreed. An absolutely superb songwriter. Anyone who can bring Jung and the great Arthur Koestler into mainstream music is amazing.
Best performance of this song. Absolutely perfect.
Absolutely agree!
Agreed, Doc. Iain. London.

King of Pain is their best song, in my opinion.
This guitar solo is simply amazing !!!!!
I love this song. Sting will forever rule.

It also helps the fact he just got out of a divorce at the time.
Yeah, maybe I hope he was thinking "they get it...it was all worth it", too
I think you’re right. Also, I think just the deep connection with the audience, just how much his lyrics touched people.
There's a little black spot on the sun today
It's the same old thing as yesterday
There's a black hat caught in the high tree top
There's a flag pole rag and the wind won't stop
I have stood here before inside the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running 'round my brain
I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign
But it's my destiny to be the king of pain
There's a little black spot on the sun today, that's my soul up there
It's the same old thing as yesterday, that's my soul up there
There's a black hat caught in a high tree top, that's my soul up there
There's a flag pole rag and the wind won't stop, that's my soul up there
I have stood here before inside the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running 'round my brain
I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign

I have stood here before inside the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running 'round my brain
I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign
But it's my destiny to be the king of pain
There's a king on a throne with his eyes torn out
There's a blind man looking for a shadow of doubt
There's a rich man sleeping on a golden bed
There's a skeleton choking on a crust of bread
There's a red fox torn by a huntmen's pack, that's my soul up there
There's a black winged gull with a broken back, that's my soul up there
There's a little black spot on the sun today
It's the same old thing as yesterday
I have stood here before inside the pouring rain

King of pain
King of pain, king of pain, I always be king of pain
King of Pain touches my soul...

The thing which always irk me until the day I die, is that I was born 7 years too late to experience The Police as a teenager.

What a ham Sting was.
