So I was raised in Hawaii. And let me tell you, Hawaiians come in every skin color there is. There are still pure blooded Hawaiians, but they are VERY rare to come by, and extremely few and far between compared to those who have mixed blood. Hawaiians are a proud race, and they are free to identify as "Hawaiian" no matter how they look, as long as they have Hawaiian blood. They can look white (Caucasian), Dark skinned, Asian, and who knows what else. These people who are complaining about the character of Nani being cast by a lighter skinned Hawaiian person is completely ridiculous, and is obviously being spearheaded by people who have zero idea of what they are talking about. That is completely different from people who were born and raised in, or just moved to Hawaii. Those people have no right to call themselves Hawaiian. Without Hawaiian blood, you are not Hawaiian. But from what I understand, that is not the situation with the actress here.
One of the many sad things about the Witcher is that in trying to prop up Ciri, us fans are like "....she was already kinda badass and important!" Something the showrunners would know if they cared about the source material.

It should be impossible to fuck up.
Now it's not that they (the producer) want to follow the source material. It's that they want to create their very "own" narrative spin-off with the title "The Witcher." Once the show got popular, and when the main actor left, the producer felt herself to feeling invincible and thinking she could do no wrong.
@@mackout1623 I'd say that started already in s02e02. Everything from that episode and onwards was like 95 % in conflict with canon. And then came Blood Origin, quite possibly the worst show ever made. I dread for the things yet to come.
Not really. Because that idea assumes that the people behind it wanted to make a good show. How can you do that when you hate the source material ? When it is more important to tick off some diversity boxes than write a good and engaging story, failure is not something you should be surprised about. If I take over a very famous restaurant, I can still use/order the same expensive high quality ingredients, still use the same expensive location. But all that goes to shit when I hire a chef that does not know how to cook, hates working in the kitchen and thinks that changing the menu that was the reason behind the previous restaurants success to his own menu that consists of low quality dishes.
Black Achilles in the fall of Troy was BBC's version of how Achilles looked like I guess, despite Homer being very descriptive of how he looked in the Illiad.
Yeh, as a Polish guy I feel sorry for the fact that there will never be proper film adaptation of the Witcher - and not for some "muh, representation" reasons but because for once my countryman created something worthwhile in realm of pop culture and it would b cool to share it with the rest of the world. Well, at least games were good and popular worldwide... As for Star Wars; resent quote for newest SW game, Jedi survival made me lough; "That's what Empire does best. Take something you love, and make it something you can't stand the said of anymore".." You won't say Disney! 😂
The sad thing too is that if you wanted black and brown people in a Viking show you could have just set it in the Byzantine Empire where the Vikings were actually quite active...but that would take work and research and tv people can't be bothered with that...
Its funny because thats exactly what season 2 is doing. The 2 main male characters are on their way to Constantinople. The main woman’s storyline is just cringe and I zoned that out but the guy’s journey is alright.
Well aside from the work & research, doing that wouldn't check mark their woke checkboxes. They'd rather just make a historically white person black, then get mad at you when you have a problem with it.
@@CyrodiilCome Constantinople was the capital of the Byzantine empire. Harold Sigurdsson who is the main character of the show was a real person who becomes head of the Varangian Guard then became King of Norway. Then invaded England and dies in the battle of Stamford Bridge.
The BraveHeart movie literally has a quote in it, saying "history is written by those who executed its heros". they practically acknowledged that it was only fantasy.
Sucks that almost no one is willing to make a movie on actual black characters and stories. They'd rather manipulate the history of popular leaders and people or do the same or fictional ones.
They did it in the first season, ratings werent great so they pulled this off but the only thing they achieved was showing how dumb the west is becoming, they were so sure of themselves, I can picture they're conversation "so what about if we raceswap cleopatra? People will aplaud our bravery and any criticism can be dismissed as racism towards black people, like in little mermaid and other stuff like that, there's no way that could go wrong besides there's really no way of knowing what she looked like, right?" Well guess what egiptians couldnt care less about our political correctness and all of its traps, they call bs when they see it and in reality those who came up with this brilliant idea are the ones being culturally insensitive
If they do anything based on real black people they'll invoke stereotyping, which is randomly deemed racist by twitter loons so it's actually safer to raceswap whitish people to black.
On relatively recent westerns. _Appaloosa_ is one I'd recommend. Great writing, great performances and great attention to detail in wardrobe and weaponry. Also, _Hostiles_ comes to mind. Subtly mature and nuanced in the way it tackles its themes, avoiding noble savage tropes.
Open Range is one of my top ones. It covers the importance of friendship, loyality and most of all justice. It has one of the best gunfights I have seen. If you have good tv speakers this is great. I miss my 5:1 system. My house shook when the shotgun went off.😂
Don’t miss bone tomahawk make sure your not eating though if you like open range look up culpeppers cattle company similar themes with a coming of age story added
It's not just modern sensibilities. The Conqueror was absolutely recognised as ridiculous WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT. The casting of Wayne was widely mocked as ludicrous.
Sadly the movie was also problematic for the cast and crew as well as a number of them are rumored to have contracted cancer from exposure to fallout from testing in the area the movie was filmed.
That is the best thing about creators like The Drinker and Gary from Nerdrodic. They are very aware of their stature on line, but they will go out of their way to give props to the little guy. True good guys.
I have heard that there's an Adam West cameo in this movie as well. Yeah, he's dead, but that didn't stop Star Wars from having Carrie Fisher being in The Rise of Palpatine.
The world of The Witcher is so awesome, a medieval setting with different monsters. They could have made a really dark fantasy show and with all the source material it should have been impossible to fuck this up but somehow they managed it...
Personally I think the dragon hunt episode where they actually intended to protect it was my fav. I’d prefer if they made an entire season based on just that episode. Then again, that would be a little too similar to the Skyrim encounter with partysnax.
It's funny watching the people who cry about representation and how wrong it is to deny them their light........ go on to destroy other cultures stories and tell them to get over it if they don't like it.
Man... I thought it was impressive when Drinker scored that Russell Crowe interview, but now he's managed to book the Critical Doggo, and not once, but twice! Who is this man, with what connections, that he can draw such illustrious names to a mere RUclips channel?
37:00 - the 1989 Batman was key in making home video affordable. Prior to that, most VHS copies of movies were around $100! But when Batman came out on VHS, it included the Batman Pepsi Super Bowl commercial, and that allowed them to sell it for the unheard-of price of only $20. After that, the gates were open and home video was a real thing!
I actually think Clooney who was unfortunately the wrong choice for Batman's film career shouldn't be written off completely. His career suffered in the end, if it is the end for a few reasons. One he became world famous and a big marquee star when most actors were beginning to approach the peak of their careers. He was over forty years old when his role in ER as Doug Ross was on its way to be the most popular TV characters of all time. Tom jokes about the housewives fawning over him only. But I think people forget Clooney if you were a straight guy or in college then like me and my pals, the ultimate Chad for a little while. He was already rich, had a Harrison Ford, Bruce Wilis or Kevin Costner like American everyman persona, was from from the west. Also of course he was laying pipe left and right, lol. It helped that right out of the gate he chose to make his more established big screen debut as a psychotic bank robber who was connected to a character from Pulp Fiction played by John Travolta in a fantastic Vampire action horror conedy. I remember walking out of From Dusk Till Dawn exhausted and exhilarated at the same time and telling people George The Handyman from Facts of Life was officially now the man! Many people probably didn't think Clooney could pull that role off in the previews and turned out to be very wrong. He was intense, funny , a bastard but not so much that you didn't want him to come out alive. I actually was excited as a film fan to see what Clooney was gonna do next and I have to say The Peacemaker is a very underrated action film followup which George Clooney did with Nicole Kidman and should be revisited as not only one of Clooney's best films. But also the type of filmmaking you don't see anymore with the male dominated action hero who doesn't play second fiddle to a Mary Sue female lead. Although litle It also just happened to be directed by a talented female named Mimi Leder who I think after following that movie up with the disappointing yet well intentioned Armageddon competitor Deep Impact seemed to be abandoned by Hollywood when it underperformed. After that Clooney's career kind of phased into a series of ups and downs where he was given the opportunity to do great work with top talented directors like The Coen Bros, Jason Reitman, Wolfgang Peterson (The Perfect Storm), Alexander Payne, David O Russell, He was praised for roles like in Brother Where Out Thou, Up ain't The Air, The Descendants, Syriana, Michael Clayton, Out of Sight, The Thin Red Line, small roles in memorable movies like Gravity. As far as Oceans Eleven goes even Frank Sinatra fans say that Clooney and Soderbergh elevated the material of the orignal movie to something much greater and exciting! Clooney is said to be compared to old fashioned movie stars like Cary Grant because of his height, subtlety and Charisma. I can't say he hasn't been a victim of his own hubris, politics, and maybe reputation for being a perfectionist especially when directing but consider the results most of the time! I do think what made people fall out of favor the most with Clooney was his obsession with vanity projects like The American, The Good German, Good Night and Good Luck, The Men Who Stare At Goats. I can appreciate how he was trying to tell important stories, some bizzare and others historical commentaries on the human condition or whatever. But either way I think Tom is unfairly writing Clooney 's career off and Critical Drinker being a fan of strong, masculine characters like the ones in his novels should appreciate alot of the work Clooney has done on film. I think Tom though is being spiteful even despite Clooney's contributions and connection with his beloved South Park. But most of this panel I gather doesn't see alot of stuff Clooney has done outside of the fantasy and horror like everything else especially Tom.
1. Cleopatra looked more like Elizabeth Taylor than a sub Saharan African person. 2. Cleopatra WAS African, but being African doesn’t mean you are black. Africa is a continent, not a country or race of people. 3. Ethnic Egyptian people also weren’t black African. They were fairly diverse, and their races varied from middle eastern, eastern, and Mediterranean.
The 1989 Batman movie was so overhyped, when we got to see it 6-months later in Japan, I was disappointed. And it cost a LOT of money for me to see it back then.
Amazon's Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time could have been the biggest show in streaming. But bad writers and ideology were more important. Netflix's The Witcher could have been the biggest show in streaming. But bad writers and ideology were more important. Disney's Willow could have been the biggest show in streaming. But bad writers and ideology were more important. One exception HBO's HotD. It can be done; hire talented writers, hire non-woke casting directors & directors, stay true to the source material, respect the fans, entertain don't lecture and rake in millions.
Disney may be doing Eragon and I'm dreading it. I loved those books as a kid and I think they'll ruin it. I know the first two books are Star Wars+LoTR, but still.
Psycho 2 is a phenomenally underrated sequel. I saw it as a kid around 2000 era expecting it to be awful and was blown away by it (apparently, that was the reaction most critics had when it released.) The premise is that 20 years after the first movie Norman Bates is released from incarceration by reason of sanity (he pleaded insanity after the first movie and since he is apparently cured and no longer insane he can be released) and begins trying to build a new life. He gets a job at a local restaurant and enters into a romantic relationship with one of the waitresses there. Then people start getting murdered with the same MO as Bates. Lila from the first movie (the sister of the woman who gets it in the infamous shower scene) is convinced Bates hasn't changed and begins stalking him to prove he's still a kiIIer. All the characters from the first movie are played by the same actors and the movie does a fantastic job of keeping the audience guessing about Bates. You don't know whether he's the one committing the murders or whether someone is framing him, and the reveal at the end as to what is actually going on almost rivals that of the original movie. Highly recommend to anyone who likes the original. 👍
Would be hilarious if Mauler did a face reveal and he was just the metal/synth robot creature from his picture but in real life and he's our first contact with an sentient non human species. What breed is critical doggo? Looks kinda like a great dane mixed with a greyhound
I love Batman 89's mob aethetic with the Joker and his minions. As I love the film noir themes for Batman Returns with Catwoman. And agreed Drinker, Burton's Gotham City is best Gotham, followed by the art deco design for the animated series.
Re the new The Little Mermaid being probably successful on release- remember that the trailer does have an enormous ratio. And as far as I know, no ratioed film/show has ever been successful. Like the National Treasure series, RoP, Strange World...and also Disney's last live action remake, Pinocchio. It's still pretty unusual for any big studio release to get a ratio (even some big flops didn't get one, like Lightyear, Shazam 2, and Ant Man 3) so when it happens it's strongly indicative of audience unhappiness. And as for people still liking it because it has great songs- let's also remember that the main singers aren't as good as in the original!
I was 11 or 12 when Batman came out in 1989 and the hype was crazy. It was a 15 at the cinema but it was the first movie ever to get a 12 certificate when it was released on video. They said that they knew it wasn’t really a 15 rated movie but it couldn’t be PG so they created the 12 rating for it and other movies. Interestingly Toby Maguire’s first outing as Spider-Man was the first movie to get a 12A rating. Must be something to do with superhero movies.
Excellent Vlog The 1989 Batman and Returns are my favourite Batman movies. To me that is Gotham in the movies. I like the Nolan Batman movies but it transforms itself from Gotham in movie 1 to New York in movie 3. I grew up with my grandparents and would watch western movies with my granddad on a Saturday afternoon. When Silverado came out 1985 went the cinema with my friends and loved that movie. We were all 15 years old in 1985. Keep up the great work 👍👍👍
Casting for Cleopatra. The supreme irony is that the director, as a Persian woman, probably looks more like Cleopatra than EITHER Elizabeth Taylor or Adele James.
Hot take, Jack Nicholson is a better Joker than Heath Ledger Ledger is damn near perfect, but Nicholson brought that horrifying yet campy mania that the Joker has to the front. If Noland had let Ledger have things like joy buzzers and chatter teeth maybe he'd have edged ahead with how he acted with them, but even then Nicholson's Joker has the randomness to him that shines directly from the comics. This isn't a critique of Ledger, but I think the restrictions Noland set of having the Dark Knight be set in a more realistic world definitely hurt his performance in a way that was never his fault.
To be honest, Im not all that surprised that people are saying the Flash is creative. The original comic, while controversial to some, does tell a pretty interesting story. The animated movie sure did it well, its definitely worth checking out. Just a shame itll be unrecognisable for comic fans. Michael Keaton Batman is the only reason I have any interest and yet his existence in the story already destroys the source material, and thats not even mentioning supergirl 🤦♂️
The Mel Gibson phone rants are Hilarious 😂 Seriously tho, It’s kinda depressing how he derailed his career but it’s a kind of nice he became a director
42:40 -- RE: Jack Nicholson's menace as the Joker; strangely, while Napier frankly admits that he is a cold blooded and sadistic murderer *before* being turned into the Joker, the one line which has always made me laugh and the one which I'll quote without fail is "This Town needs an Enema." "Where does he get those wonderful toys" is 2nd best.
RE: Cleopatra, the Ptolemies, and Egyptian Culture; the sad thing IMO about the uproar over Cleopatra is that we have very limited direct knowledge of the Ptolemaic family tree after Ptolemy Sotor took over Egypt as his reward for campaigning with Alexander the Great. What we do know, though, is that Egypt had gone through several dynastic regimes which were likewise *Not Egyptian,* such as the Kushites or the Hyksos. Furthermore -- we do know that Cleopatra, like many dynastic persons before her (regardless of sex) joined with local cults which *WERE* undoubtably and anciently Egyptian in nature. Egypt had a long and complicated history with female rulers, over the thousands of years it was a going concern. Consequently, it also had an elaborate set of inter-related cults that formalized rules for inheritance, ascendancy to the royal family, inbreeding, and much more. So yeah. I'm not convinced that Cleopatra was 100% Greek, because we cannot say with certainty who all her grandmothers were; some of them might have been Kushites, but its far more likely they were Egyptians.
^^ Geez, this is a long and complicated historical discussion. In its most ancient form, the Egyptian cultural myth that formed the kernel of its society involved the competition between 2 groups who claimed the title of kings. These are, of course, Upper and Lower Egypt; the Symbol for Unity which eventually emerged is the double crown, the "Pschent".
Also, RE: Local Egyptian Cults; for lack of better or more concise terms, Egypt's various cults had been conducting a type of breeding program not only on sacred cattle or animals, but also on the various families who were vying for dynastic control. If anything, I think it is safe to assume that the reason there was a parallel between the sacred animals and the nobles was for the sake of public demonstration and performance. That's why the nobles were often celebrants and certainly participants with the various rituals, celebrations and feasts that occurred in every civic region and town. Even more interesting to me, each town would likely have a regional variation on the standard Egyptian pantheon of deities. Historian Guy de la Bedoyere has a RUclips channel, and has published several excellent videos as an overview of various hot topics in Egyptology, Cleopatra among them. I am certainly not a professional nor a published author on the topic, but I do understand why what I've typed above is easily demonstrated. And by gumbo, I also hasten to add that Ptolemy Sotor is credited with having the wisdom to reintroduce some of the discarded Egyptian deities of his own time, which marked the beginning of the Greco-Egyptian cultural period, at least as far as the pantheon of regional deities goes. See also: Serapis; the Apis Bulls.
26:30 i thought when immigrants moved to western countries they were equal citizens but people born in hawaii by immigrants arent hawaiian enough? sounds racist to me
The Cathedral scene in Batman was inspired by 'Hunchback Of Notre Dame,' but seeing Joker and Vicki go up the stairs is similar to the scenes in 'Vertigo' when Scottie and Madeleine go up the bell tower. The shot when Joker drops Vicki's shoe down the stairwell and you see it fall is an obvious homage to 'Vertigo.'
Not been a fan of the Guardian films but Rocket was the only thing I did like. But he's a character that is good because we dont know everything about him. As soon as he is given a deeper dive im worried that the appeal may be lost. Look at Solo or Boba Fett.
I don't think he will be. If his video is to be believed, he got demonetized, and I believe he's going to be doing video stuff as a background/hobby kind of thing now, instead of as a job. It'll be awesome to see him here, but I don't think it'll happen.
Batman was a 12 in UK AZ, I doubt you saw it in a cinema in 89. Batman was actually the film they created the 12 certificate for! I actually watched it in Florida on holiday, three months before it hit the UK. My friends were so jealous. 89, best year ever! 37:22

F Paul Chato. After he made his comment that the U.S. “has normalized mass murder,” I wouldn’t give that man the time of day, let alone watch his channel or any other he’s part of. It’s a shame he had to become a regular over at Midnight’s Edge, where he made that offensive remark, to absolutely no backlash.
I thought the time jump element of season 1 was brilliant. I didn't see it coming until it did and it gave me a reason to watch the show a 2nd time. Season 2 just seemed to lack any planning or ingenuity and it's a shame to feel we are being deprived of much deeper source material. I have to wonder whether Cavil is getting a reputation of being unbankable, with how many projects he's had to work away from, even if for good reasons.
1:07:20 You think they would skip straight to Lady of the Lake's ending? That would be bold, but truth be told the creators of this show take only the things they like and piss on everything else... Skipping almost 3 books worth of content is moronic on the one hand, but on the other it would help if Netflix was to pull the plug on this disaster.

i hate the revisionist retelling of historical figures ..basically lying to everyone with the heading of revisionism or drama..or historical fiction..or anything regarding lying to everyone saying THIS is what we wish it could have been instead of saying...THIS IS WHAT IT WAS.. it takes small minds and pathetic attitudes to lie about history and historical people just to try and create some alternate history just cause a certain group of people are unhappy that people that look like them werent actually around in that part of the world doing anything that mattered then. the guardians messups bug me, warlock being all wrong..and the high evolutionary being COMPLETELY wrong..2 strikes for the film already the flash film..gonna suck, even with keaton in it..they are going to rely on stuff like that to sell it. Just want to say.. Saying Cleopatra was Greek is like saying most Americans are Brittish..She had Greek and Persian ancestry and was from a family that married within for hundreds of years. Cleopatra was Egyptian, she just wasn't black. The vast majority of Egyptians are not black.. I think black nubians only make up two percent of their demographic...
@CriticalDrinkerAfterHours Philip K. Dick's Counter-Clock World is a recommend, and as much as I would like to see a TV adaptation I can't imagine it would completely escape becoming a vehicle for current year ideologies. Certain practicalities of the Hobart Phase come across as a bit daft by contemporary standards but overall, the story remains a powerful and prescient piece of pulp sci-fi.

They did it in the first season, ratings werent great so they pulled this off but the only thing they achieved was showing how dumb the west is becoming, they were so sure of themselves, I can picture they're conversation "so what about if we raceswap cleopatra? On relatively recent westerns. _Appaloosa_ is one I'd recommend. Great writing, great performances and great attention to detail in wardrobe and weaponry. Also, _Hostiles_ comes to mind. Subtly mature and nuanced in the way it tackles its themes, avoiding noble savage tropes.
Hell Or High Water is also good. Chris Pine and Jeff Bridges are awesome in it.

But either way I think Tom is unfairly writing Clooney 's career off and
Critical Drinker being a fan of strong, masculine characters like the ones in his novels should appreciate alot of the work Clooney has done on film.

Disney may be doing Eragon and I'm dreading it. I loved those books as a kid and I think they'll ruin it. I know the first two books are Star Wars+LoTR, but still.
Psycho 2 is a phenomenally underrated sequel. I saw it as a kid around 2000 era expecting it to be awful and was blown away by it (apparently, that was the reaction most critics had when it released.)
The premise is that 20 years after the first movie Norman Bates is released from incarceration by reason of sanity (he pleaded insanity after the first movie and since he is apparently cured and no longer insane he can be released) and begins trying to build a new life.

Hot take, Jack Nicholson is a better Joker than Heath Ledger
Ledger is damn near perfect, but Nicholson brought that horrifying yet campy mania that the Joker has to the front.
