At the time, as soon as I finished watching all the episodes of Star Trek TOS, I was able to buy 3 volumes with the original stories from which the scripts were taken. For some episodes there was even the complete script. I discovered something I hadn't even looked at in the rolling titles. I immediately recognized most of the names of the authors: they were all established and famous science fiction writers or screenwriters. The short stories were perfect even in a book form. Those who "create" at the moment are not even able to write the price on a stamp.
Roddenberry assembled a dream team of sci-fi authors and put his own polish on it. They still churned out a few turds, but on the whole, they did a nice job.
After watching so many youtube videos from the circle of people that Drinker is in... I was compelled to finally cancel my Netflix sub this week. When they asked why I wrote "I can no longer support Showrunners and Writers usurping my favorite IPs for their own purposes."

The conversation at 30:00 where they describe so many loose ends in the Marvel Universe, reminded me of the TV show Lost. How J.J Abraham kept on introducing new plot points as the seasons kept on. Until we arrive at the ludicrous ending to the whole plot and so many plot points left unaddressed. That's lazy writing. It's much easier to put something flashy just for it sake, but when you have to tie it down to the narative of in the next episode/film, you just ignore it because it doesn't serve you anymore.
Yes. The numbers that everyone kept guessing about, and THERE WAS NO EXPLANATION. Even though I could come up with one: That they'd be "primal numbers" for life, sort of. Like fibonacci numbers and the Golden Cut are special. Another thing, they had "the box" that could get them anything from anywhere, including people. WHAT WAS IT? WHERE? And the mirror thing that could see anyone's lives - okay, but how did they know WHEN to look? Same with the box, how would you know where to get Sawyer's police records? And if the smoke monster was intelligent and could turn into a person the whole time, why didn't he just approach them and ask them to kill his brother from the beginning, threaten them if they wouldn't, instead of randomly attack them in the jungle? Well. Just BSing about the numbers was the biggest betrayal.
JJ is a glutton for the Rule of Cool. But the caveat it's only for one-off things, otherwise actions (and plot points) have consequences and stories have resolutions.
Time doesn’t exist anyway. It’s just a way of measuring the interaction of a body in relation to other elements in the universe. That’s why all time and distance measures are about motion. So don’t hide behind fictions
Speaking of a charming, modern retelling of Snow White, Once Upon a Time. We also get such gems as this interaction in season 1 - Emma: A tie? You know you don't need to dress a woman as a man to give her authority. Graham: So you think you can get people do what you want in that red coat? Emma: I'm getting you to do what I want right now. [crumples and tosses the uniform shirt]
Xena had a musical episode too, but it's purpose was mystical and a way for Xena and Gabriel to resolve their issues. Of course, Xena had somewhat jumped the shark by that point in my eyes, moving from Ancient Greece to Christianity. But it was a musical episode done right, like Buffy. The singing klingons just seems to be a symptom of the futurama/rick n morty'isation of sci fi. I like those two shows, but there's a time and place for everything. At least Warhammer 40k, which I've only recently discovered the lore of through their library of fiction novels, is mostly serious and deals with a lot of adult themes, despite some occasional goofiness.
I have never understood why an actor/actress gets residual payments every time their film or show airs, but other creatives don't get the same luxury. For example, if a software developer designs an application that makes a company hundreds of thousand of dollars, he his paid for the work he does in coding that application upfront. He doesn't get paid into perpetuity, every time that software makes the company money. Why are actors and actresses given this special treatment? I understand the practical reason as to why they get this deal, because their unions fought for it. My question is what is the rationale for this, when creatives in other industries are never afforded this luxury?
I used to work in game dev, and royalties were a way for publishers, to pay less upfront, and reward the dev studio if the game was a success. The dev studio did the identical thing with the employees, less wages and royalties as motivation to make a better game. Projects got bigger, required more people/time, and a lot more expensive. Lucky to find anyone getting them now.
I can only speak for the British BBC here, ( I used to be a cameraman back in the 80s!). Because British TV has much less money to spend than the USA, the BBC had to pay relatively low wages to even quite big-name actors....however, they would receive royalties every time the show they were in, was repeated. To give you a rule of thumb, if David Jason received $1000 for each episode of the very first series of Only Fools and Horses, then if the show was repeated - and they were repeated a great deal! - then the actors get a multiplication of their original salary by the number of years since it was made...therefore, IF the BBC decided to rebroadcast the original series on its main network today, 42 years after the first showing, then David Jason would receive $42,000. The Commercial network - ITV- paid more 'Upfront' but rarely repeated shows, avoiding royalty payments. With new shows literally costing Millions to produce, repeating old shows and paying royalties, makes more financial sense to fill air-time.
The writers and actors on original Trek had lived through World War II; they understood real horror and they knew how real soldiers spoke and behaved. The modern writers and actors have nothing in their past to draw on so everything they do is shallow and vapid.
It's so sad but we have crossed the Rubicon a long time ago... the long slow decline to our inevitable catastrophic ending has begun in haste. Our best is far behind us.
Tolkien fought in WW1, Cervantes fought in Lepanto, Homer was a hoplite... These guys didnn't need to have fought in Irak or Afghanistan, but at least be knowledgeable enough about war literature and cinema not to sound like your worst nightmare is being served the wrong kind of latte at starbucks...
Just wanna say as a women I love when you have women on your panel. Especially Baggage Claim, I really resonate with her videos and enjoy her calm reason and opnions.
Agreed. I am GenX and my friends who grew up on TNG and DS9 who love Strange New Worlds and cope Lower Decks with "it's just not for me". And I say No. They were raving about the musical episode and picked their favorite singer. I said "musical episode in _STAR TREK_? What are you smoking can I have since??!"
I have a friend who has praised a lot of it, even as an OG fan. He says TNG hasn’t aged well. He also thought The Rise of Skywalker was “brilliant” so that’s all I needed to know.
The celestial in the MCU reminds me of the Sword of Sargeras in World of Warcrafts Legion Expansion. In the end there was this dark god like creature who stabbed the planet with a sword and it caused quite a ruckus for a few months and then it was just forgotten and even became a meme in Q&A's. "What sword?" is the response you'd get when you ask. In general this seems to be a huge problem in long lasting media, both games and movies. Few can pull it off but just a few. While some ideas in the MCU aren't half as bad the continuity is just so bad because they cannot be asked to pick up the loose ends others left behind to create a well knitted universe. Like Mauler said you can easily see this in post endgame media. Even if the agenda wasn't as annoying you'd still have stories who don't interact with each other despite having established this team- based hero adventures.
Always happy to hear a mention of Peter Watts, thanks Robert! Blindsight is excellent, so is The Rifters trilogy (Starfish, Maelstrom, Behemoth), as is everything else I have read from him. I definitely recommend it to anyone who likes Sci-Fi (so most of the people watching this). His writing is on the darker and harder side of the Sci-Fi spectrum.
Imagine a Hawkeye show where: It begins with him raising his children with his wife. The wife and kids beg him to take them to the city for a Christmas celebration. He doesn’t want to, but agrees to make them happy. They are kidnapped. He is told he has x days to get 1 billion dollars because “surely the richest hero on earth would loan his friend a little pocket change” (telling him to get it from Tony stark) He begins hunting the group down because he wants nothing to do with the avengers anymore, or if this is set after Tony died then because the kidnappers didn’t know Tony was dead. He hunts down and beats up some smaller groups but can’t find his family. Eventually he finds a group already being attacked. He investigates and meets the punisher. Both military men, one lost his family to a mob family, one trying to save his. They team up to take out kidnappers. Neither of them argue about murdering mass murderers, torturers, blackmailers, kidnappers. They kill the bad guys, high five, and head their separate ways. Then as a after credits scene on the very last episode we see the punisher taking out another group of criminals solo, he starts losing the upper hand to the boss when an arrow comes in from above taking out the boss. Punisher looks up to see Hawkeye in a window, he propels down and lands in front of punisher. “What are you doing here?” The punisher asks, wiping blood and sweat from his face. “Aren’t you supposed to be with your family?” “Christmas would be the same without the whole family” Hawkeye replies “we all hope you can make it” The punisher replies “we’ll see, lotta bad folks still out here need to be put in gift boxes for the morticians” he smirks and gives a little fake laugh as he tries to stand up but he gets put off balance by a sudden cough. Hawkeye supports him from the side, his arm around the punishers back in such a way that the scene transitions to them both in nearly the same position but with out their suits, the background changes from a bloody gruesome massacred criminal groups warehouse to warm cottage decorated for Christmas, Hawkeyes kids running toward the punisher now wearing clean regular clothes, the camera slowly pans up to the angel atop the Christmas tree as we hear the kids yelling “uncle Frank uncle Frank you made it!!”
1:00:00 This part made me think of Black Mirror. That's where all the creativity and exploration went to with regards to sci-fi. I haven't watched all the seasons, but what I did watch was very interesting, thought provoking and it was based on our current tech to make you question the direction we are heading.
Stupidly enough the writers screwed up the Thanedd Coup, Nilfgaard attacks the Northern Kingdoms 3 times in the Witcher franchise, 1. To get Cirilla where Cintra is destroyed. 2. After the battle of Sodden Hill where Vilgefortz is suppose to win the battle instead YENNEFER, The Emperor Emhyr Var Emreis decides that Nilfgaard has to weaken the mages so he & Vilgefortz plan the Thanedd Coup to kill most of them. Visdamir Dijkstra & Philippa Eilhart had their own plans so Thanedd arc was gripping in the books. The writers completely destroy that in the show by making all characters idiots. The third time Nilfgaard attacks the Northern Kingdoms is in the games so it a nice continuation. Philippa Eilhart created the Lodge of Sorcerers because of the Thanedd Coup but you know YENNEFER is Lauren Hirsch self insertion so of course Yennefer does this in the show. In the Witcher franchise Yennefer doesn't join the lodge of Sorcerers making her stand out but Lauren Hirsch will cut out things about Yennefer that actually make her a likeable character just to shove her in the show more
Also in the show Yennefer is the one who suggests the conclave. Everything is given to her, Vilgefortz suggests it in the book to easily bring down the Brotherhood after gaining power.
@luke8801 Yennefer is Lauren Hirsch self insertion so she has to get all the better storylines and I think if Lauren could have made Yennefer a Witcher to be the protagonist, she would have done it. Blood Origin’s is as close as Lauren Hirsch could get though.
Regarding young people being on Tik Tok: i sat watching Oppenheimer in the cinema. The young people who sat watching it too, stayed for 3 hours. No one left or lost interest
I think Baginski's thoughts on Americans and their tastes for complexity were based on the Americans he was encountering as the producer of The Witcher, which was Hissrich and her crew. So from that point of view, he was entirely correct.
Talking about Buffy made me so happy, I love that show so much ❤❤❤ And Once more with a feeling was hilarious, but devastated episode, made so much impact to the show and us viewers 👌❤️ Also I couldn't agree more with Robert about the new Spock being essentially Sheldon - that's so true, unfortunately... they butchered my favorite character!!!
I think the sequel trilogy would have been better if Boyega was the storm trooper who develops force abilities. The opening scenes could have had Boyega’s abilities stuffing up the killing of the villagers. Ren notices and tries to take Boyega to go to the dark side and Luke tries to bring Boyega’s character to the light side of the force.
I love Mauler's summary of the problem with Phase 4/5... What they did to War Machine/Rhodie is emblematic of the entire issue: Rhodie being a Skrull was just something thrown in, and it undermines and ruins everything with that character. It sapped my entire investment, because there is no reward for keeping up anymore. It's not going anywhere, and what we're getting isn't enjoyable on its own.
Minor quibble...I think Star Trek did deal with interpersonal relationships significantly, DS9 did, especially regarding Kira and Odo and Ben and Cassidy. It was just done less frequently and in a very mature way.
The funny thing is that Klingons are probably the only race i can think of that will sing war stories and make songs and opera the most powerful and depressing endeavor for people in universe but i think even they will find that musical sequence a thousand times more terrifying
Witcher writer says they have to simplify plot for young U.S. audiences with short attention spans... but the vast majority of people who heard of the Witcher franchise came from the games, which has 100+ hours of story driven gameplay on each title. The books were in Polish and it was impossible to get an English copy until the games made them popular.

Hey! Stock analyst here, when it comes to why Disney stock was down in 2021 even though like you guys said they were still pumping out content- it’s because markets/stocks are usually forward looking. While in 2021 Disney seemed to have been doing better than this current year in hindsight, markets already started pricing in disneys coming losses/reduced gains on the tv/movie side of things.
Funny trivia about Ricardo Montalban in Wrath of Khan. A lot of people thought he used some sort of chest and stomach piece to appear fit and warrior like. He was actually that shredded during the filming of the movie. Edit: Made in Abyss has an excellent premise and amazing world building, but it has very controversial themes since it involves kids.
I'm still haunted by the release of JJ's original Star Trek reboot, the posters everywhere covered with 4 and 5 Star recommendations, hearing people say time and time again that it was the best Star Trek movie of all time (mainly because it "wasn't boring") and being insulted by people I knew for not liking it claiming that I hated fun. So glad those movies are now all but forgotten and everyone seems to have come around to the truth.
Also, songs that are good are still popular decades and centuries later, same with movies, Arsenic and Old Lace is still great, Apollo 13, Aliens, 12 Angry Men....
The only reason why these 3rd string marvel movies (captain marvel), etc.... we're even successful was because people wanted to see how it lead into the infinity saga
I'm going to defend 65. That movie's biggest problem, imo, was it went straight into "world ending event" instead of giving us an "Enemy Mine" like scenario where he and the girl have to learn how to survive together and communicate so they can be rescued. Make that movie 30 minutes longer or cut other stuff out so you can have that and it's a perfectly fine movie.
It's not terrible imo, but it's not good. I don't think adding a little fix to it would change much. Honestly, the whole film would've been better as a video game. It already feels like one at times

@@GrasslanderThat’s fine. Grab your popcorn and watch them run the Rodent House into the ground. I am!
It's always a treat when Robert's on
Agree.
Few people write for pleasure anymore.
NICE!! It’s important to remember, and for them to remember…we don’t need them. They should act accordingly
If only a real human would read it and not a so called A. I. 😂
Get off the pop cult folks, read "Don't Give Money To People Who HATE You".
That means a lot. Glad you made it there.
Isn't that Disney though?
Netflix doesn't own many iconic IPs. The only thing that comes to mind is live-action adaptations of anime (Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, etc)
Just wanted to say this was a really good crew to have on. Not too many people. I really like hearing from Drinker and Mauler on every collaboration, and I'd like to hear more of Baggage Claim. I think she offers a great perspective. Dark and Robert did a great job here too. Good chemistry all around.
Drinker get ready for 104 degree hot Texas weather or 40 degrees Celsius if you want it metric. Here in San Antonio it has gotten up to 107 the hottest summer since last summer lol.
I don’t think it was Abrams introducing all those. If memory serves, he left the show after the first season.
Doing this on a Wednesday really fucked with my internal clock. I spent all last Thursday thinking it was Friday... THANKS, DRINKER! 😤
Time doesn’t exist anyway. It’s just a way of measuring the interaction of a body in relation to other elements in the universe. That’s why all time and distance measures are about motion.
So don’t hide behind fictions
Thanks bro, I’m *off* today HAHHA
So cool to see guys like DarkHour get the attention he deserves. Good on you Drinker for helping the "little guy" out.
The little guy... you been talking to my exes?
Just started watching some of his stuff, hes gonna be big soon
Kor would show up in DS9, one of the best send offs of all time for both actor and character btw
Speaking of a charming, modern retelling of Snow White, Once Upon a Time. We also get such gems as this interaction in season 1 -
Emma: A tie? You know you don't need to dress a woman as a man to give her authority.
Graham: So you think you can get people do what you want in that red coat?
Emma: I'm getting you to do what I want right now. [crumples and tosses the uniform shirt]
Quinns ideas breaks down Blindsight and many other good sci-fi books really well.
Robert Meyer Burnett , I looked up Blindsight and have ordered a copy of it as I want to read it now.
The movie is called: Snow of Color and the Numerous Magical Forest Creatures.
Another Disney classic.
Originally it’s due to the add revenue from a highly watched show or licensed movie. But, in todays market, it just doesn’t make a lot of sense.
I have actually seen some people declaring current Star Trek as a renaissance of the franchise.
My first thought is: Are you serious?
i enjoyed picard season 3 as much as TNG. TNG was not great but it had some great stuff about it. the rest of current star trek is unwatchable
Some episodes of Strange New Worlds have been amazing. Shame the rest have been so piss poor.
Insert J Jonah Jameson meme
When this was live in my subscription feed, I legitimately thought I had lost track of my week and thought it was Thursday for a few hours, lol.
It happened to everyone...
The greatest flaw of the musical episode is that the Klingons weren't singing Opera.
The greatest flaw was that it happened at all.
Hear Sons of Kahless! Hear Daughters Too! The blood of battle washes clean the warrior brave and true!
AKTUH... MELOTA!! MELOOOOOOTAAAA!
That's what I was hoping for when they showed up. Missed opportunity
I thought it was because it turned Star Trek into a joke, but ok.
Imagine a Hawkeye show where:
It begins with him raising his children with his wife.
The wife and kids beg him to take them to the city for a Christmas celebration.
He doesn’t want to, but agrees to make them happy.
They are kidnapped.
He is told he has x days to get 1 billion dollars because “surely the richest hero on earth would loan his friend a little pocket change” (telling him to get it from Tony stark)
He begins hunting the group down because he wants nothing to do with the avengers anymore, or if this is set after Tony died then because the kidnappers didn’t know Tony was dead.
“Aren’t you supposed to be with your family?”
“Christmas would be the same without the whole family” Hawkeye replies “we all hope you can make it”
The punisher replies “we’ll see, lotta bad folks still out here need to be put in gift boxes for the morticians” he smirks and gives a little fake laugh as he tries to stand up but he gets put off balance by a sudden cough.
“Christmas wouldn’t** be the same”
It would be a Christmas classic
I’d watch that!
That sounds quite lovely.
-"just like Budapest all over again"
-"You and I remember Budapest very differently."
The Black Widow movie and the Hawkeye show we deserved.
1:00:00 This part made me think of Black Mirror. That's where all the creativity and exploration went to with regards to sci-fi.
I haven't watched all the seasons, but what I did watch was very interesting, thought provoking and it was based on our current tech to make you question the direction we are heading.
The Singing Kingons. Great name for a band.
1:41:17
Lol had to bust Darkhours balls because i love him. Glad to see him on Open Bar AGAIN.
He deserves all the recognition he's getting
Talking about Buffy made me so happy, I love that show so much ❤❤❤ And Once more with a feeling was hilarious, but devastated episode, made so much impact to the show and us viewers 👌❤️ Also I couldn't agree more with Robert about the new Spock being essentially Sheldon - that's so true, unfortunately... they butchered my favorite character!!!
Lady Baggage Claim always a great addition
It would have been fine had they just changed the timeframe to something after Endgame.
@baggageClaim should never be last minute. She's great
"I saw that movie on a plane and had to use all my willpower to not walk out of the theater."
Always a pleasure to be an audience of the Open Bar! love all of you!
I remember Time Bandits, Terry Gilliam if I remember correctly. There was something about that movie that stuck with me being a child at that time.
That builder deserves money everytime someone uses that building.
Mauler knows stuff and i think that is beautiful
Minor quibble...I think Star Trek did deal with interpersonal relationships significantly, DS9 did, especially regarding Kira and Odo and Ben and Cassidy. It was just done less frequently and in a very mature way.
The funny thing is that Klingons are probably the only race i can think of that will sing war stories and make songs and opera the most powerful and depressing endeavor for people in universe but i think even they will find that musical sequence a thousand times more terrifying
Baggage Claim is superb
You have Baggage Claim and Robert Myer Burnett on the program! This should be interesting.
Baggage Claims older videos concentrating on narcissism are a must watch!
She breaks the topic down very well
Thanks for that, I'm a new fan and yes good call.
This lineup was great tonight. Smart, balanced, honest.
Wow no Drinkers Chasers only the raw open bar!
You forgot to mention wendy when talking about self-love, her happiness derives from wanting to die alone
I appreciate the civil tone; you are a great moderator
If a company makes me a conservatory and I pay them for it, do they have the right to make me pay for every hour I spend in it?
NO
C'mon guys! Pretending to be a fairy tale Princess is REALLY hard work!
I can imagine there is a lot of standing around and long hours But you could also be spending the same 12 hours working unskilled labor in Southern summer heat. Or worse, you could be mining cobalt without tools or digging through trash in developing nations. Maybe she needs to do a charity junket to these places to get a bit of perspective.
Yeah. Then she'll go on RUclips and ask people making $9 per hour to help end poverty.
The hawk eye doctor strange scenario is essentially what HISHE does every week
Robert Meyer Burnett is Jonathan Frakes in disguise
Funny trivia about Ricardo Montalban in Wrath of Khan. A lot of people thought he used some sort of chest and stomach piece to appear fit and warrior like.
He was actually that shredded during the filming of the movie.
Edit: Made in Abyss has an excellent premise and amazing world building, but it has very controversial themes since it involves kids.
and Best Dadrewd
I'm still haunted by the release of JJ's original Star Trek reboot, the posters everywhere covered with 4 and 5 Star recommendations, hearing people say time and time again that it was the best Star Trek movie of all time (mainly because it "wasn't boring") and being insulted by people I knew for not liking it claiming that I hated fun. So glad those movies are now all but forgotten and everyone seems to have come around to the truth.
I liked the first reboot movie in the same way that I can enjoy a good Star Trek fanfiction.
I support the Film Actors Guild !
That's the F.A.G. way
Love this Robert guy
Baggage Claim is here... nice now i can fall asleep with my eyes wide open ,AS A MAN.
Drinker shows the Star Trek clip, it has been muted by RUclips due to copyright.
Mauler: "Silence is the only thing you can do with that."
Thanks for uploading. Loved the whole show especially the part with RMB, loved his insights to Star Trek.
Also, songs that are good are still popular decades and centuries later, same with movies, Arsenic and Old Lace is still great, Apollo 13, Aliens, 12 Angry Men....
12 Angry Men got a remake in 1999...and they actually made it *better*.
"How long do I have to wear this chickenshit outfit?" - Snow White.
Hudson, come here. COME. HERE.
Drinker, you slovenly sleek stalwart. Thank you for uploading the full ep before the chasers. Fructose always tastes better after ethanol 😎👍
Great insight from Baggage Claim!
The only reason why these 3rd string marvel movies (captain marvel), etc.... we're even successful was because people wanted to see how it lead into the infinity saga
I watched 65 on a plane aswell..but I enjoyed it.
Apparently they were outbid by Viacom 18, who is a partner company of Paramount. So they lost streaming cricket rights in India by not having enough money (or desire) to win the contract.
I had to stop halfway through this and go watch Once More With Feeling again 😂
They say they want more female representation in fantasy, but then ignore amazing stories that already do have a female lead like the mistborn series
Bringing up Time Bandits melts my heart. It's my Snow White.
Why am I not watching movies, preferring movies to TV shows, and watching this type of content. Miss Baggage Claim is a delight and unlike Nerdrotic the boys let her talk.
