    Have you ever suffered from shin splints? What methods did you use to help treat them?

    • @MK-je7kz
      @MK-je7kz 7 лет назад +4

      For me stretching didn't do much good and (self-)massage of the lower legs is the thing that keeps my shin splits away. After running, when muscles are still warm.

      When I first got into running more regularly, and also started to run on the forefoot, it was really bad.
      I had a few weeks of rest and took it as a lesson to start things slowly.
      Also, I have to wear custom orthopaedic insoles because of Achilles tendon pain, do you think it's important to have a running specific insole or is it enough to have a standard one?

      Had the sore shin at the front of the bone last year plus some really tight calf and shin muscles. Only just getting over it now although still not 100% fixed. Wasnt diagnosed as a fracture with my local physios, just over pronation from weak arches and hyper-mobile ball of the foot, and had insoles given which were super painful. Had acupuncture, massages, minimal running although work means i walk 10 miles a day. I have changed my shoes 3 times, changed the way i walk and run to build the muscles to cope with the weak foot and have been trying to loosen plus stretch all the muscles when resting. Slow process. Lots of concentrating and studying the foot and ankle movement how the left differs from the right.

      My shins got much better after I switched to shoes with thinner soles and small or no drop, since it made me stop heel striking and land with the foot under me instead of in front of me. The muscles responsible for dorsiflexion are located in the shin, and when heel striking they have to take up a lot of load. Land with the foot parallel to the ground, and you will spare your poor muscles. There are other reasons shin splits can occur of course, Heather has great running form and still got them.

    • @bobthemoo
      @bobthemoo 7 лет назад +3

      I used to get them all the time. My running style was the main predictor, and they got worse when my shoes wore down. I completely changed my running style and started using minimalist shoes and the problem has gone away

    I started having it on late November
    I have stopped running and yet sometimes even while walking I get pain on front shin of my left leg
    Same goes with right leg sometimes
    When I touch it ,It doesn't hurt at all pretty normal
    I never use to get pain in my legs but ever since November ( one day I ran so much)
    I started having pain
    Mild but still I shouldn't have this
    Have been using compression socks but the pain never goes permanently
    Is this permanent ? I have stopped running
    Any suggestions?

    Timely catch-up on your great content. I'm into my third week with this, although my GP didn't call it shin splints and I thought it was something else entirely. I ran (slowly) with brand new trainers for 4x 30 mins whilst away on business. Following week I was back to cycling on Zwift (typically, 4-5 hours) and now this. That's quite a delay? Is shin splints and/or stress fracture whilst cycling a thing? Certainly a first for me :(

    I need advice. So, I’ve had shin splints for about a month now, and I’ve noticed that when I rest, mainly on the weekends, they feel better, until I begin running again. I stretch 3 times a day, use a foam roller daily, ice daily, and take ibuprofen. Some days there’re better than others. My main worry is the fact that I run track. We have practice 5 times a week, and I have a meet on March 6. I really need guidance on what I should do.

    Many of these types of videos make a claim that 'increasing the blood flow.' That makes no logical sense because compression sock's primary medical use is for people with specific medical issues where they have excess blood that pools in their legs causing very visible and painful swelling. The compression keeps blood from being able to easily pool in that area so it can more easily be pumped to other parts of the body increasing circulation elsewhere. Essentially, compression socks would actually reduce the blood flow in the lower leg, opposite of the claim, and reduce swelling that way.
    Also, it might keep the muscle warm so it moves more smoothly and some of the pain is from the muscle getting pushed away from the bone so the pressure might help the relieve that pain.
