My guess especially considering that the card looks like a knockoff/custom, is that the card isn't actually a micro sd card at all and basically doesn't conform to any of the sd standards. It is likely a dirt cheap serial eeprom/flash chip on a carrier pcb that contains the roms and a simple menu system and that is all. It happens to be shaped like a micro sd card so they could use a standard female micro sd card slot to give the illusion of expandability. Actually thinking about it, it could just be wire links in the card that tells the internal processor in the console to load up the menu like those gameboy micro clone consoles with the fake gba carts that stick out the top and don't have any active circuitry in the carts!

@sjm4306 It's clearly looks like some kind of short happening on the "MicroSD" PCB, as you mentioned like it is in these GBA-styled cartridges. Games compilations like 888888in1 or 999999in1 are stored there and the fake cartridge only "tells" which memory bank console should load. I assume the same happening here but now with shape of MicroSD

The thing I like about this is the shoulder buttons, and I still want a gameboy-oriented handheld emulator with joysticks, l/r3 buttons and 4 shoulder buttons that can play PS1/N64 level games. I've got 150-200 dollars for something like that, at least.

the only thing I can think of is that this design is for a higher end product they sell/plan on selling that has more processing power and they're just using that same housing for this as well
could you swap the boards between the two models? Since the other is smaller, it should fit AND you could take advantage of the triggers with a little fancy soldering.
A teardown to see what chip it is running would be nice. This way you can immediately see if it runs linux or the micro sd is just a gimmick.

I'd reccomend downloading MiniTool Partition Wizard and putting in the Micro SD card and seeing if it's recognised by it if so, you could possibly use Minitool Date recovery to get the files off the SD card to your PC without formatting the card

Hey. Look up Rg99. I just found it on aliexpress and its a Retromini but the size of the Retromax, has XY buttons, and can add your own roms.
Maybe you can try 'Paragon Disk Manager' to check if the storage card is using file system as EXT4 other than common FAT32. If so, you can also use PDM to export/import roms & test emulating.

Elliot try go here for ways you can flash the consoles and speed up the emulation. I have the old retromini you reviewed and some guy off the discord had a reprogamming guide. It can run gba games and even doom and heretic now and I'm getting full speed on mine. The retromini is universally named rs-90. I don't know what the new retromini is called but they probably have a channel for it.
After doing research on all these emulation devices, I decided the Sony Vita was the best option, and I got one off ebay with the old firmware so I can out homebrew and Roms on it. It's not much more expensive than some of these things, and it's way better built, it's not a cheap plastic thing

In all likelihood, it's possible the card is a format which windows doesn't recognize, although it would likely trigger a notice in newer machines that it needs to be formatted. There are a couple ways to find out. You can use a Linux- based computer to look at the card. You can also check disk management inside Windows to view partitions. There's also Easeus Partition Master, a really good program for managing partitions.
However, here is the real problem. Unless a different menu system/OS is flashed to that card/handheld, it will likely not be able to run anything other than more Famicom/NED games. And without analyzing the hardware, I wouldn't be able to say if the CPU is able to handle games outside the Famicom/NES library.
In other words, we won't know what it can do until the right people look at it.

Seems to have been designed specifically to LOOK like you can loaf it with GBA & SNES ROMs. Very sneaky! Shame about the slowdown too, means it's essentially a nice looking but useless device. I had the same issue putting roms on the bittnoy - you need windows 10 or a program called diskgenius to access it. make sure you expand the partition before loading roms

I would not even be surprised if the « sd card » is just links that bridge cpu pins and if the CPU detect some of his pins are bridged it start the games otherwise it does nothing.
Oh boy, i hope this thing won't have a batch without the microSD (TF) card reader soldered onto the board, like the Retro Mini… Got one back then that didn't have it on the board and pretty much rendered the whole unite useless, except for the onboard games.
That "sd card" looks like a single sided pcb to me, if you look closely there's a trace going between the 2 outer pins. ibb.co/M2Tm9L6
i'd wager the games are in internal memory and the card just shorts the outer pins in the slot.

On the Retromini the ROMS have to be in a folder named "GAME" on the SD-Card. The Card in the video hasn't a folder GAME. Maybe thats the reason why it doesn't work?

I think you should hear a sound of recognized device anyway, with DISKPART you can check if there is any device reporting as media storage, even if it's a Linux or any other partition

What you failed to try was having the SD card installed in the console then plug in the micro sd plug into the console then into the computer.

Given the price of the console, I would bet a pretty penny that the data lines on the micro usb jack aren't even wired to anything, much less that they would waste time writing a usb msd driver to access a sd card they don't officially mention as being compatible.

Should be on the first page of the website. But in case it notes, that the actual successor to the Mini I think is currently being planned on called the Plus. But it doesn't really put much to the rumor until a working unit is seen in the wild.
