    Hey! A little tip for the flickering of the screens. Try and adjust the shutter speed of the camera to a different value. If you're filming on a phone that can in some cases be difficult but most if not 99% of cameras let you adjust that and get around the flickering.
    Another thing that might actually help is using an ND filter so that your change in shutter speed doesn't affect the brightness too much. (if you're going down in shutter speed.)
    Otherwise great video!

    I feel like you can't go wrong as long as it's backlit and laminated.
    And on the subject of buttons and membranes, you can definitely find new ones that are good. I've always had good luck with the Retro 6 Prestige and the funny playing. They can also be a little stiff at first but they break in nicely over time. Also, when it comes to DMG buttons, I recommend either the prestige Retro 6 or any brand that has a perfectly round d-pad. I had one with the mold point flat spot and while I've never had an issue with the same thing on a GameBoy Advance, it did cause problems on my DMG and I had to switch it out. It was wanting to go down or up when I pushed right

      My take on this is that the OLED screen uses PWM which makes the screen flicker at a higher speed to dim the brightness. It cannot be noticed by the naked eye but can be caught on camera. This may cause eye strain during longer sessions, and it’s the only potential downside of this type of screen. Have you experienced that?

      @@johnzar1794 I haven't experienced that but to be fair, I haven't had any extended play sessions on it yet. I tend to swap between "quick fix" games on Game Boy and longer play sessions are on things like the GBA with its excellent Metroid games.

  • @Jackpkmn
    @Jackpkmn Месяц назад +1

    The thing I never see talked about with GBC screens is how the actual pixels look on the screen. The original used the same aspect ratio pixels as the gameboy pocket with the subpixel arrangement being vertical bars. But most OLEDs use a triangular subpixel arrangement or a horizontal points arrangement. When Ive seen them in person none of them look even remotely a little bit like the original screen as a result. And it makes me feel like were losing a bit of something with the focus on screen size and brightness.

    • @Jackpkmn
      @Jackpkmn Месяц назад +1

      I also find it strange how much praise gets given to after market shells. I see it touted a lot "its just like the original" but the color is never anywhere in the same ballpark as the original. And the fitment is totally wrong. One of the best touted kits Ive seen was like $25 and the fit and finish was horrendous. The parts did not fit with the OEM parts even a little, the dimensions and curves were totally wrong and the plastic itself was much softer so the whole thing flexed way more. Thats never to mind the fact that I wanted a new shell for my Pokemon GS gameboy and they just used this like gold colored plastic with silver flecks in it that was translucent. The original shell is neutral grey and painted with a pearlecent paint so thats not even an F- quality its a DNF.
      Until the aftermarket shells can be seamlessly put together with an OEM one the fit and finish will continue to get an F from me. I can forgive the color most of the time because plastic color matching is more a dark art than a science really.

      Really? I'm on the fence on getting it, tbh the only thing that worries me is the minimum brightness. Example, I can only use my iphone 13 at 5% brightness in bed, anything more it will be uncomfortable.
      Do let us know if its comparable to 5% brightness to phones.

    I'm still not finished watching the video, but I really want to use FPGBC display to mod an OG GBC. Is it compatible to original hardware?

      I don't think it is, at least you wouldn't get the larger display if you connected it

    🕹For so many years the only real gbc modern(ish) display option was GB Boy, but suddenly over the last few years we're swimming in so many high quality mods and 3rd party systems that I'm sure I've lost track of some of them. 🤣

    They now need to make a FPGA Gameboy Advance so they can call it the "FPGBA".

      That would really be fantastic. I hope they do.
