You know what would've made this plot SIGNIFICANTLY better? Instead of the Bog King using the potion to make a girl love him and it not working being his Anti-Love Backstory, the girl wanted to be his queen so she plans to use the potion on him, and he feels so violated that he wants all the primroses destroyed. That way he and the other fairy can bond over their betrayals and shit.

      May I add to this?
Let's have a backstory wherein Marianne and the Bog King met and befriended one another when they were small children. They would sneak away and play together and talk and found it all exciting because they're kids and having a secret friend is awesome! But as they grow older and circumstances and prejudice begin to take hold, they meet each other less and less, with Marianne running into the unfortunate coincidence of telling the Bog Prince (as he would be at that point) that they can't see each other anymore on the day the goblin girl tried to use the Love Potion on him. And it didn't work because at that point, he'd fallen in love with Marianne.
Their romance in the latter half of the film is less about connecting from the start than it is about reconnecting, rekindling the friendship from their childhoods, realising they had fallen for each other back then and finally allowing themselves to be together.

Laura Dietrich I even thought of the perfect pop song for that montage: Big Girls Don't Cry by Fergie. It'd start off as a background track, but as Marianne walks away after saying goodbye to Bog for the last time, the song undergoes a diegetic switch and she sings the chorus:
"I hope you know, I hope you know
That this is nothing to do with you
      It's personal, myself and I
We've got some straightenin' out to do
And I'm gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket
But I've got to get a move on with my life
It's time to be a big girl now
      And big girls don't cry."
As the song fades away, Bog chops down the first of the primroses.

The sad thing is that after watching this review, I thought of a way to improve the plot of this movie and I think that I may have come up with something better:
First just take away the subplot where Marianne almost marries Roland. She will remain a strong willed warrior fairy princess, but now it is because that is what she has always been, not because some jerk broke her heart. Roland will still be there, but as a Gaston like suitor who is trying to marry Marianne because she is the heir to the throne. Also take away those creepy “nice guy” vibes from Sunny and actually already have him and Dawn in a secret romance that they are afraid to reveal because of the prejudice both of their races have towards each other. Also now Sunny doesn’t go to Bog King’s kingdom for the love potion to get Dawn to fall for him through creepy means, in my version he does it because Roland blackmails him into getting the love potion so he can use it on Marianne by saying that he will reveal their secret romance which could ruin both of their lives and Roland won’t go their because the Bog King throws anyone in prison for trying to get a love potion and he is going to not get his hands dirty. This time, Sunny goes and gets captured by the Bog King and Dawn goes to Marianne begging her to go to the Bog King’s kingdom to rescue Sunny because she loves him, Marianne being a good sister agrees and when she gets there, gets into a fight with the Bog King and because they are too evenly matched in abilities, Marianne decides to try to reason with him which would give the story a chance to develop the romance by having her realize that in spite of his reputation, the Bog King is not a bad guy. Also I will change the reason why the Bog King is so anti love potion by instead having him try to use a love potion on someone, have a love potion be used on him and when they found a way to remove it from him, he felt so used by the person who used it on him that he decided to imprison anyone who tried to do it because he believed that anyone who used a love potion must be a vile person. Meanwhile Roland decides to actually be a little more active and convinces the King that Marianne is being held prisoner by the Bog King and gets an army, but he is still trying to get the love potion. Also the Bog King and Marianne confront Sunny about why he was getting a love potion and he tells them the truth which of course makes Marianne hate Roland even more and have her fight him when he arrives with the army. After she wins, Marianne convinces her father that Dawn should be with Sunny no matter what and he agrees to let them get married, also while at the wedding, Marianne and the Bog King admit that they are falling in love with each other and kiss.
I feel like if they had made major changes a lot like the ones I presented and probably nixed the whole musics aspect, it at least could have been decent. Also I want to know why George Lucas felt like he had to make a form of media for only girls when already made one of the more iconic female characters in Princess Leia.

It’s an interesting idea but it’s poorly done as is most of this movie. I did really like the idea of that though it was spice some things up. If anyone would be capable of doing something like this well would honestly be Hayao Miyazaki’s who strongly believes that no one is ever a complete villain as have the motivations on why they may do something. If you watch Princess Mononoke he shows a very good example of this and if you’ve seen them movie you know what I’m talking about. Not saying he’s the only one who could do it I just idk he seems like a good example of someone who could accomplish it but I’m sure anyone can if they try.

    • @QJ89
      @QJ89 4 года назад +4

      @@alekseyl172 Alright, challenge accepted.
I expected Glee to be a self-aware parody of musical theatre, to the point that it pokes fun at the genre. While it has a air of introspection in how the "Gleeks" are treated poorly by every-one else, the pride in which they embrace their talents is a little overbearing.
But more crucially, the amount of Pop songs they make their own (and often botch) is an absolute deal-breaker to a music connoisseur like myself. Rachel's take on 'Like A Prayer' is my go-to example.
Glee and Jukebox musicals like 'Strange Magic' and 'Rock Of Ages' generally walk a razor's edge in this regard, only to fall short and tarnish the songs they replicate. Normies are the general public who eat this shit up because they know the songs being performed on a surface level, but very little beyond that point (because they're often whom the writers cater to).
So yes, not only is it an Unsult, but the way in which they pull it off is embarrassingly Lame and gives us a bad name.

The way the love potion is framed in the film is troubling. No one, other than the main characters and Roland, seems to be aware that the potion is bad. When Roland outs Sunny's reason for getting the love potion, the elves and fairies seem less bothered that he just tried to drug their princess into loving him, and more that it led the Bog King to them. When it comes up again (army march scene) everyone's like "Teehee, he has a crush on Dawn."
The movie's response to, "Is using the potion bad?" is "I guess? Maybe? I don't know, but it sure was funny when all those gross characters kissed!"

I see no problem is those two characters ending-up together based on looks alone. Is love supposed to be build on perceived standards of beauty? What is problematic, morally speaking, is how everyone in this movie, including Sunny, thinks of love potion as a cute thing. Another problem, screenwriting-wise, is that the love from her side comes out of nowhere and seems lazily written.

@@AlirioAguero2 I have a problem with characters ending up together in what is framed as a good relationship if that relationship is based on looks alone, regardless of if they're both conventionally attractive or not.

I watched the movie a few days ago after watching a review about it. I was in the mood of a trash feast, something so bad it's funny for all the wrong reasons and was... partly pleased, partly disappointed? I expected something more trashy after hearing this is one of the worst animated movies of all time and there are many shitty things going on (I agree with most of this review) but there's worse out there. There are even a few aspects I really like and enjoyed. I think, and this is nothing but an opinion, what makes everyone so angry at this movie is the fact that with a few tweaks, it could have been decent. Not a classic, but less offending.
    1. As mentioned in this video, add a few lines that hint at Dawn liking the token poc character but dismissing it because she was brainwashed with talk about social standing
    2. Away with this cringy last song, let it end for Bog and Marianne like it did for Anna and Kristof, on a "We like each other, probably more than just like, and i totally want to see you again!"-note instead of this stupid "oooh love of my liiiife"-kitsch fest (Bog's mom's scene with the "date" setting would have been kinda funny, the characters are already like "seriously? We've just met and exchanged two calm sentences after fighting, this if far out of place!". But it loses any comedic potential because in the end, what mom wants is exactly what happens. A one true love romance even classic Disney princesses would call rushed). Give them a few lines that mean something, cut out that horrible last song and show instead that maybe, Dad Fairy realises that daughters are interesting people, too, and not just good looking decoration who need a good man to be complete, and let the different folks and kingdoms make peace (instead of King Lucas, I mean, King Selfinsert, I mean, the wise and goodhearted Fairy King cry over his beautiful daughters' choices)
    3. Consistent design choices. The fairies don't look bad but the butterfly wings seem to come from a cheap Barbie production. The goblins aren't pretty but there's love for detail, but Bog's mom and Sunny look like cheap troll dolls.
    4. Lucas should just have kept his mouth shut. As said, with a few simple tweaks, this wouldn't have been a great movie, but a harmless enough guilty pleasure. But his "Girls don't like Star Wars, I'll make a movie perfectly tailored for what girls want to see in a movie!" turns the movie into an insult to every girl's tastes and intelligence. If he had just said:"I wanted to change the genre from SciFi fantasy to more classic, fairytale fantasy" the initial reaction would probably more like, okay, that's fair, it was an attempt, he tried to get out of his comfort zone. He didn't create a masterpiece but hey, it's good enough for a Sunday afternoon after waking up with a hangover.

So he makes a movie for his daughters... where he puts a character that would happily brainwash a girl to fall in love with him as a romantic good guy. That both explains soooo much and makes me terrified for the Lucas girls.
I have to say that this Taming Of The Shrew terrible adaptation of sorts pales next to the Moonlighting episode and 10 Things I Hate About You.
As for the next case: OH GOD. The latest one had crappy CGI (like the one time they didn't notice they had made a woman with four arms... not kidding), horrible Glee-ripoff singing and downright disturbing character design, and since each movie so far has been worse than the previous one, this will be made by the denizens of your own domicile, Diva! To be honest this film may have been better if Disney never bought Lucasfilms. Originally this movie would have been much darker with fewer (if any) pop songs. They were considering “Bring Me to Life” by Evanescence at one point for example. Also, if Disney never took it over then it is likely that the whole beginning with the Roland cheating and the whole heartbreak transformation wouldn't have been in the movie, rather picking up at where Marianne is already heartbroken. Also, she may have been given an earlier interaction with the Bog King, and with the beginning sequence gone they could have had more time to develop a romance. Also, Disney wanted to put a emphasis on the whole Sunny and Dawn thing cause they wanted to make a TV show spinoff with the two, actually originally Lucas wanted Dawn to remain single in the end to show it was ok to be on your own, which would have likely gotten rid of some of the creepy Sunny.... Idk, just saying, Disney did have a lot of influence in this and I think that is why it came out poorly

About Sin number 5... most monarchs are like that. The King in the movie does have a point on pushing marriage. If his direct hiers don't bequeath a child to continue the dynasty, a civil war could break out for the position for the throne. The same could be said for the other side, though it could also be that the mother doesn't want her son to declare war in order to keep their kingdom stable. In a competent movie, this would be stated.

Think about it: A woman wanting the Bog King would use it to try to seduce him, he finds out and feels violated, so he bans the love potion ingredient and jails the Fairy. That would make sense. This was the last movie i ever worked on in my time in the Animation Industry. A bittersweet finale it was. On the one hand a dream realized to get to work alongside the great George Lucas AND being reunited with a former crew to get the band back together in a beautiful part of the country and make more money than I'd ever made before. On the other, learning George was a terrible director, an editor with no sense of direction, and a penchant for burning money with nothing to show for it.
Storytime: Picture it. Los Angeles. 2010. I've just completed what I thought was the worst movie of my career (Alpha&Omega) when i get an email from a former director asking who wants to move to SF to work at Lucasfilm? Not being a schmuck, I joined up blissfully unaware of the consequences to come. FF 29 months, we were out the door after rebuilding this problem-child 4x and still not able to read George's mind who doesn't believe in storyboards or linear plots. The movie was taken from LAL and given to ILM to complete. Big Rock studio was shut down. Directors were fired and replaced w Gary Rystrom who had angrily waved his Sound Design Oscar in everyone's face to get the job. Careful what you wish for. Even while building the story we had no idea who was the protagonist was supposed to be. And there were no females on the story crew so the nice-guy love potion debacle was summarily glossed over as a fairy tale trope. We all knew it was bad optics but we got caught up in trying to salvage the characters rather than the overall plot. There was no stopping the needle drops. Moulin Rouge was the template but it never felt right.
This final form is different than the last place we left it. Grizelda was a giant troll paired with a male that was another barrier along Sunny's route to the castle. There was a subplot of Dawn winning over the goblins and going all Snow White on the group and cleaning the castle. The ending with the minion goblin being female came out of nowhere.
While we kept mining for gold, there was an entire animation studio in Singapore that was waiting for us to send them stuff to work on. FOR 2 YEARS.
It was around summer 2012 we got news about the sale. George got a $4billion check and we hung on for another 5 months watching the dream collapse. There was so much great about the experience. The people, the places were memory palaces. We held weekly parties at our condo, made an earnest Halloween short film, hiked the mountains of Marin county, explored SF, Lucasfilm Christmas parties. Just sorry the job left such a bad taste. Which is not to say i had a bad time. I was the luckiest schmuck ever. No one wants to make a bad movie. I was working with some of the most talented artists on the planet. In the end it was a bad story. And no one could save it.

I'd say it definitely counts as a dark fae movie. In fact I think it's the movie that leads to a lot (if not a greater majority) of interest in fae mythos. But a dark fairy movie is something I have only seen mere glimpses of. Stories, yes. Art, yes. But a movie would really be a great addition to the somewhat neglected aspect of true (read: darker than Disney's) fairy media.

It would have been much better if the bog king was a twist "non-villain" that felt remorse for love potioning his best friend as he lost her as a friend and wanted to prevent sunny from doing the same, He follows sunny around trying to thwart him then when sunny gets away with the potion he and Marianne team up to stop sunny. ultimately but they do not have to stop him because sunny cannot actually go through with using the love potion.

  • @TheSmolBrit

My friends and I watched this drunk, and it was the only way we could get through it. There were points of genuine hysterics at this movie.
It's a shame though, because there are glimmers of perhaps some good morals and lessons to be taught here - if, for example, Sunny had been successful at some point with Dawn falling for him due to the Love Potion, that could have paved the way for interesting character exploration. He could have realised that (given the effects of the potion) her love wasn't genuine, and that it felt shallow; that it could never take the place of genuine affection. He could have come to terms with the fact that you can't force someone to truly love you, and when the spell his broken he could have profusely apologised and realised that Dawn's friendship is enough for him, because he genuinely cares for her. Heck, they could have even hinted that his transformation of character, his no longer actively looking for rewards but instead just enjoying her friendship (and being a genuinely good person for the sake of being a good person), could have sown the seeds for genuine affection from Dawn. AND THAT'S JUST ONE WASTED FACET OF THE FILM.

Oh not to mention another thing with the love potion. If the person never met their 'true love' before they were hit with the potion wouldn't that mean the spell could never be broken because they are too hypnotised to be interested in meeting and interacting with anyone new?

Here's a suggestion: for the problematic way every male character treats magical roofie potion, condemn George Lucas to question for the rest of his life if his daughters were actually successfully dosed with the potion whenever they bring someone home / move in with a person / get married. Maybe that would illustrate the inherent moral problem of a love potion to him.

Honestly, this film is a guilty pleasure. I love the song covers (even though there are way too many) I'm a sucker for the character designs and the art style in general. Not to mention the Hero falling for the "villain" (Bog isn't really a villain but whatever) and that is how the villain is "redeemed" is pretty interesting. Not to mention Marian a princess, falls in love with a king, not a prince. That in itself is interesting.

Ouch! But I have been waiting for Musical Hell to touch this one some day, even though I do actually like it a lot. It's a favorite at a regular Movie Night I used to frequent in part because it opens up as SUCH a bewildering train wreck, and first timers always spend the first twenty minutes groaning and complaining, start warming up around Love Is Strange, and then by the time Strange Magic kicks in they're having a ball. I swear, it's like it got handed off to different people after twenty minute mark and a lot of the initial problems with the writing, pacing, use of music, chemistry, appeal, etc. suddenly got a lot better.
I consider it an under appreciated movie, but it's still not a "great" movie, or a particularly smart movie, yeah, and that Nice Guy thing is just total garbage. Seriously. Also, the original intent of that Movie Night was to watch bad movies, so our perspective may have become a little warped by the time we got to Strange Magic.

0:30 two films: American Tail and Labyrinth. Bluth may have been the director, Don Bluth may have been director, and Steven Spielberg takes a lot of credit for producing, but Lucas was also a producer on that film, same as Labyrinth. So he's technically worked on musicals before, and both of those films are perfectly fine.
Having said that, I agree with your points.

  • @hostessofhorror99

I have to admit, I actually enjoyed watching Strange Magic, especially the relationship between Marianne and the Bog King. It was until after watching some reviews that I began to see the movie's flaws. Now I absolutely love the Bog King's rendition of Trouble and the "Strange Magic" song, but yeah, I do have my problems with this movie.
    1. As much as I love musicals, I feel like Strange Magic should of had original songs instead of a pop culture playlist. I mean, seriously! It's a tale about the world of fairies and mystical creatures (inspired by Shakespeare btw), I'm pretty sure a whimsically orchestrated soundtrack would not hurt!
    2. The fact that Marianne became a edgy warrior fairy and suddenly hates romance all because of one guy feels rather extreme. Now, I'm sure there have been people whose mindset was changed completely after a breakup or finding out that their partner wasn't as faithful as they thought. I guess, as a defense for Marianne, she probably was always a cheerful person until Roland cheated, and maybe that was her first time experiencing a rough heartbreak. But if you're going to have a warrior fairy princess as a main character, keep her that way all throughout the story!
    3. The Sugar Plum Fairy.... just.... no.... When I first saw her for the first time, I expected her to be this wise, graceful, and powerful character that plays a crucial role in the story. Instead, I got an unbearable "comic relief" or something... Why is there a Sugar Plum Fairy in this world, by the way? Isn't she a Nutcracker character and shouldn't she be like the one elderly fairy from Fern-Gully?
    4. Marianne's father. What is it with some movies that the parents of main characters are absolutely terrible parents? I know bad parents (and not just the abusive ones) exist in real life, but REALLY?! Come on, have the father be a understanding and caring being! Have him comfort Marianne when she's going through a heartbreak, have him teach Dawn to be patient about finding true love, have him fact-check Roland and make sure he's not lying, have him do something instead of being an overprotective and oblivious parent!

Sunny killed this movie for me. He was willing to poison a girl to fall for him and yet he wins out in the end? WTF! I would have him banished if I was Dawn. His stupidity could have gotten people killed. I don't care how nice he was.Actually scratch that he was only nice to fit his agenda with getting into Dawns pants. Screw him.

1:25 To be fair, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” DESERVED the “Touchstone Pictures” label given its sexual innuendoes and mature themes.
Had it been released under the “Disney” name, the film would have gotten a lot of complaints from parents for being too sexual and adult.
Besides, if “The Black Cauldron” has taught us anything, it’s that slapping the PG rating on a DISNEY animated film leads to box office failure.
Interestingly enough, it was Roy E. Disney (vice-chairman and nephew of Walt Disney) who suggested to then-CEO Michael Eisner after a preview screening that the film be released under the “Touchstone Pictures” banner instead because he felt that the line, “Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?”, was, in his words, *”too risqué for the Disney label”.*

How Dawn and Sunny's arc should have resolved:
...Ya know, even though I was embarrassed to admit it, I _was_ interested in you - until you tried to drug me.
