I turn on cc enough myself as a hearing person because I couldn't understand something that was said that I don't even get why other hearing people would be annoyed about it. ALL IT DOES IS HELP!

I agree! I always turn them on because I think it is great for spelling, when you miss something, or if I'm learning a language.

I'm a hearing person and I get annoyed by it simply because the text draws my attention; either I'm reading captions I don't need to which takes my eyes off the visuals of what's going on, or I'm constantly resisting looking down at the thing that my brain insists I should read which is very distracting. Also it can obstruct part of the image.
However, I never complain when someone needs the captions; my annoyance is not worth another person not being able to hear/read what's actually going on.

Thank you, Jessica, for reaffirming my choice to open caption all my films in class. A few of my professors are trying to discourage me from doing it because it’s not considered “the industry standard”. Open captions for everyone!

As a hearing person, I have CC on almost all the time when I’m watching Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Hulu. I don’t find them annoying or distracting at all, in fact it helps me to understand the show a lot better than if I had them off.

Sorry for the question. Are You English Native speaker? If so, Why would you need captions?

    • @Embattled5211
      @Embattled5211 3 года назад +1

@@toma1610 For me, at least, CC help to understand what's being said better. If it's a loud, action scene sometimes a word isn't clear, or if the script uses "their/they're" a lot. Other times if someone is whispering it can be hard to hear if there is any noise around myself, or when a character does an action off screen but it isn't clear WHICH character.
There's a lot of places where confusion can arise and just having confirmation of what is happening prevents a lot of rewinding. They also don't get in the way as they are small and can easily be not-focused on.

@@toma1610 I'm a native English speaker and I actually caption for a living: I personally really like using captioning because sometimes I can get easily distracted and captions help me understand what's happening if I missed a word.

Sobbing is technically a sound, though, so it technically makes sense to caption. I think A J was probably talking about "shook" in the same sense that some people caption something like "[youtuber stares blankly and blinks a few times haha lol shook]"
(or "OMG IS THAT PEARL?!" (...I wish someone would just finally approve my six-month-old edit to that video's captions already, because I'm so bothered about that one DX))

I have ADHD pretty bad, and captions used to be something I hated bc I thought they distracted me from the movie, but now I turn them on for pretty much everything! It helps me remember the dialogue so much better when I can read and listen to it at the same time, plus it makes me less prone to getting distracted bc my brain is having to multi-task. It also has the benefit of helping you to understand what's being said in a noisy environment! The only times I don't use them is when a family member gets really annoyed by them, if they aren't synced properly (which is more distracting), or if they block too much of the screen (I will die on my hill of begging for all captions to be adjustable). Captions are NOT just for deaf/HoH people!

Heh, on top of the worse captiview problems, my mom also complains about the fact they take away her cup holder.
(But she likes them over the assistive listening headphones she was using before she realized the theater was keeping the captioning device secret from her, because they often had interference/static problems and at one point even managed to play audio from the wrong movie, despite theoretically being tuned to the right frequency.)

I had such a hard time watching Black Panther! I had the caption machine positioned and was doing fine, but then they used open captions on the screen when the characters were speaking another language, but they didn't display that on the caption machine, so I had to keep leaning around the machine read the open captions and then back to read the closed captions. I tried to move the box down but it wouldn't go any lower without falling out of the cup holder. The machines at my local theater are so much better than they used to be, but gosh that was a tough movie to follow. I don't understand why so many hearing people get so upset about captions. It seems like such a small "inconvenience" to allow access for so many people.

    • @MM-jf1me

I hand type closed captions so they're actually accurate-
And always have them as an option, mostly because open captions doesn't work for my videos. But I love open captions and if they're an option, I use them, cause as a hearing person, because I will process my visual ques faster than my audio, so I'll process reading words rather than hearing them.

I don't always like captions on my movies and shows. Sometimes it's really frustrating to see what people are saying before they're saying it. Obviously this could be fixed by them synching up the captions better.
But frankly, if there can be two showings with and without 3D, can we not provide most showings with open captions and some without?

Subtitling a movie can't be that difficult. English language movies are subtitled into other languages for foreign language audiences all the time. Years ago, when I was stationed in Iceland I watched all kinds of American movies subtitled in Icelandic. Regular, on the screen for everyone to read, subtitles. So it can be done, just isn't.

Captions in general have come a looong way over the last 10-15 years. I remember watching the news and all the retractions and corrections constantly spewing on the screen. Awful! It's bad enough not hear at all, but to get your brain to follow along with all the corrections...shoot me now please! Unfortunately when it comes to theatres most smaller towns do not offer devices, but in my experience the glasses provided the best experience. The still have a little ways to go but accommodations are getting better in general.

Hey Jessica! Recently in Mexico a law was passed so that all cinemas use open captions (This is in favor of people who have hearing problems).
Honestly, it seems somewhat strange to me since most of the movies the subtitles do not match the audio which is somewhat uncomfortable.
What he didn't know was the other side of the coin. I have always believed that technology solves many problems and from my opinion closed captions were better.

But watching your videos I can realize that it is not like that and that there is still much to do. I hope the technology improves so that everyone can enjoy the movies.

Do they have (and if they don’t why not?) movie theaters that provide times with open captions on the screen? I feel like at busy theaters there’s at least a third of the population if not more that would want open caption viewing times. I know pretty much nothing about the subject but would it be that hard for movie viewing equality and just sticking the captions on the screen for everyone? Or like 3D glasses but instead they pick up the open captions on the screen

Well, I'm deaf and I use an apparatus to listen, but unfortunately I can't understand anything in the movie without subtitles/captions, because there's so many reasons, but the principal one is that in the movie they speak so freaking fast or that there's some scenes that there's no actors speaking directly, a very common example is when one actor is in the middle of call... but whatever... I live in Mexico and in the movie theater's in Mexico when the movie are foreigner they always show the "open captions" to understand which I'm very grateful, but... soon I'm moving to Canada and I figured that it doesn't exists movie theaters with "open captions" which it make me feel sad and disappointed because I like a lot to watch movies... so this means that I need to wait months of months to be released online or just in popcorn4time to watch it... in my home with TV small screen... which it baffles me because we're in 2019 and they doesn't offer a movie with "open captions" even the movies are in English... it doesn't MATTEEERRRR !!!! Maybe we're a minority of deaf people but we have all the rights to watch a movie and to enjoy it... not to just been waiting since the release date in the movie theaters to watch online... so yeah... this sucks a lot and it's sad...

Thank you for this video. I was just curious looking this up. I live in Sweden. Since 2014 all movies have to have subtitles even movies in our language and especially for children movies. The only problem is that the SUB follows the original language and not the dub which can be confusing but oh well. So no stupid devices that need batteries, mulfunction or make houndreds of small problems and I am sure sadly the staff dose´t get taught how they work and just on that day the one girl who knows how it works is on vaccation so. Just have subtitles on the screen. I may not like the "dramatic music" only have the speak sub. Sure I wish you could chosse when you order a ticket to fill in. "Do you requier captions?"
But then we will have people troll others or in the theatre people wishing it won´t have captions and when they see it make a big deal out of it an yell. "WHO THE F WANTED CAPTIONS!"
So I have to say include subs, they are not that distracting, can say as someone growing up with sub for ALL movies, becuse they are in a diffrent language not becuse of having hearing problem.

Why the terms "open" and "closed"?

Who came up with the stupid naming convention: OPEN sounds like editable, CLOSED sounds like baked in. It's the other way around.... PFFF.
BTW where are your open captions?

    Aren't captions just subtitles?

It seems like the Deaf community needs to create their own theaters and re-invent the movie experience. Use whatever caption system works best, and any employee that neglects the captions or other adaptive technology with not just be fired, but contractually required to commit seppiku to atone for their failure!

that would be helpful, Jessica. I understand what closed captions are and how they work. Open captions seem like the same thing as closed captions.

Gabrielle D. Cool! Glad you like the videos! :) So open captions are when the words are already on the movie/film. So you know when movies show subtitles on the screen for when someone is speaking a different language?
Most of time when films are in English and then someone suddenly speaks a different language they include subtitles for that on the screen. When the film is made, those words are are already stuck on the film and you don't need to press an on/off button to see or get rid of the words. The words (subtitles) are officially part of the movie.
Hope this helps a bit! There is a captioning website called AI media and they show the difference between the two if you want to search more about them! Take care!

Yes, I do. I think I understand. So open captions are when the words are already on the screen but closed captions have to manually added on the screen? Is that correct? Are open captions always different colors?

I have a deaf accent that comes with trying to learn how to talk when you can't really hear your own voice.
