So happy to finally be sharing my #InternationalWeekOfTheDeaf 2018 series with you! And yes, you may recognise some of this script from my speech at VidCon this year... 😉In this series I'll be talking about the importance of captions, how to caption and captioning language.
As you know, captions are SO IMPORTANT and it would be great if we could get as many people as possible to properly caption their RUclips videos. Please, please, please share this video and the necessity for captions far and wide but particularly with your favourite RUclipsrs ❤️
    J xxx

I have been adding subtitles to my sewing tutorials for the last year or two. A few viewers reached out to me saying they were hard of hearing or had a deaf relative, so I started adding subtitles. For tutorials I usually upload my script and let RUclips set the timings. For chatty videos I use the autocaptions and go in and correct the mistakes. Not the most perfect way, but works for now.

I have no hearing issues or processing issues but i bloody love subtitles. I used to watch a lot of foreign films and grew heavily dependent on captions- and I always wondered why I retained knowledge from videos better with CC on- reading! So here's a tip, when you read and listen to something, you retain a lot more knowledge, so when looking up educational videos, here you go!

    • @vaidahk
      @vaidahk 5 лет назад +7

This exact thing is why I always took amazing notes in school. Because the act of me writing down what I was hearing significantly increased my retention, even if I never read those notes again.

I use captions for ADHD as without them I tend to loose track of what's being said quickly or stop paying attention and stop taking in the words I'm hearing. If there's captions I know I have to be reading as well and that helps to stimulate my brain so I can focus better and makes it more likely that what's being said is actually going in. Since starting to use them I've noticed just how few creators actually caption their videos! Even major creators tend to leave it to 'auto' which, lets be real, is awful, or let their audience caption it which either can take days/weeks/months or can be inaccurate/filled with jokes which are funny but limit the actual 'translation' if you will.

5:58 "Oh deafness is coming for you, I'm sorry about that." ^_^
As one of the 38 million US population with some degree of hearing loss _and_ a daily headphone wearer, yes, I can confirm. Enjoy those high frequencies while you can, whippersnappers! Because one day you'll be like me: skipping videos that lack useful captions.

That is so true. I'm hard of hearing and deaf. When I can't get good captions or any at all, I just don't watch the videos because I either can't turn the noise to high because of location or it's just not worth my time.

I have really bad insomnia at the moment and being able to watch videos without waking my partner is a lifesaver! I will always watch content creators who take the time to subtitle/caption their videos - accessibility and useability are so often understated with this media.

I loved the bit where you showed us how a video sounds to you. My hearing is very good so I always tried to understand how the world might sound like for my mother.
I had my headphones on during that bit of the video and wasn't really listening so it came as a bit of a surprise when I suddenly couldn't hear as good as I usually can.
I'm now fluent enough to understand English without needing subtitles but they helped me so much when I first learned.
I still use Spanish subtitles on Spanish videos because I'm nowhere near good enough to understand everything but can understand almost everything when I can also read it. Subtitles made my life much more colorful over the years and without them I wouldn't be where I am now. Also still sometimes use English subtitles when depression gets really bad and I can't concentrate on listening as well as I normally can.

As a speech science researcher I love captions because they make my job better and save me so much time. Manual transcription and sorting through ambiguity (especially with unfamiliar accents in a context poor environments) are incredibly time consuming tasks, and reducing the time spent on them let's me get to the analytical portion of my job much more quickly.

I tend not to use subtitles, but as a non-native English speaker, once in a while I'll come across a phrase I just can't make out. I'm always thankful to the creators whose videos let me put on subtitles for that section of the video, so I could continue watching without feeling that I've missed part of the message and now have to figure it out on my own. And that's one of the reasons I love your channel so much, I know I can always count on you in that ❤
Thank you for explaining all about subtitles/captions so clearly and extensively!

As a person with perfectly fine hearing, captions are *super* useful to me, but I didn't realize it until I started watching you. Some accents are difficult, some videos have noise, sometimes my diabetes (rapid changes in blood sugar, specifically) affects my brain's processing capacity, and sometimes I'm watching a video for a class I'm going to have a quiz on and need to know *exactly* what's being said. I don't have to rewind if I miss something when captions are there because I'm a faster reader than I am a sound processor. Which by the way, sound processing takes up to six seconds sometimes for people with normal hearing and sound processing, and by then someone could be on a totally different topic!

Captions were essential to my English learning process. I am german and had only been in contact with the english language in school when I started watching english videos on RUclips. It was really hard to understand what the people were talking about.
Especially if they were talking fast, which happened a lot . If I wanted to look up a word I often didn't know how to spell it if I had only heard it but hadn't seen it in written form. So I often misspelled it.
That's what the translater apps often couldn't find a translation. As you can imagine I often turned to German RUclips videos instead of the English videos with the same topic.
But when I discovered how to turn on the captions I could finally understand the details of the english videos . It was also very easy to look up the words that I didn't know. I started watching englisch RUclips videos regularly because I understood the details and now it doesn't really make a difference if I watch videos in German or in English .
Captions really helped me with my English which gives me much more opportunities in the internet and doesn't only limits the videos I can watch to videos in German.
So thank you to all the people who put captions on their videos.
It really helps a lot if people!

Yeah I love it when youtubers caption their videos. I don't have any hearing problems, but I still use captions from time to time. When I am at work and not really supposed to be watching videos, I will play a video on my phone and just have the captions on since I can't turn the volume on. I also find that I can focus on the information in a video better with the captions on. Sometimes I will watch a video and halfway through it I'll realize that I didn't really even hear anything the person said (especially if it's an educational video for school or something). If I turn the captions on I tend to focus more on the actual words being said, so I retain more.

I started using captions more since coming across you, and oh boy! Did it increase my video watching ability. I can watch your youtube videos anywhere and anytime and feel like im not bothering anyone because i have the sound off.

I'm so looking forward to the rest of this series! I already caption my videos, but I want to make sure I'm doing it right! Most of what I've learned is from watching RUclips with captions on to see what proper captions look like. Also, they help me focus.

thank you jessica, maybe creators will understand why captions are sooo important! I'm very glad when I find channels like yours in which videos have captions, because as a not native english speaker it's easier for me to understand and also improve my english! with love from Italy 💕

great first video! I've been considering subtitling videos that me and my friend have done and posted, but after watching this I want to do it even more. I'm looking forward to the rest of the videos coming this week!

Maybe something you can touch on in the subsequent videos on captioning is that [at least on YT] the viewer can move the caption box around on the screen. I just learned this a few weeks ago and it's massively helpful on annotated videos where the caption box might overlap the video text. For example, if the video maker puts their annotations at the bottom of the screen [such as news chyrons], I can drag the caption box to the top of the screen so I can still see what they've written; if that covers the person's face then I drag the caption box to the side of the screen.
I'm slightly hard-of-hearing and have auditory processing issues so while I can still hear well in perfect conditions, if there are any other noises [especially background music, which seems to be the bane of my YT existence], or if the speaker is mumbling/has an impediment or an unfamiliar accent, etc. then I struggle to understand, so captions are really helpful. [For the record I've never had trouble with your background music, perhaps because my eyes are trained after 25 years of caption use to read them, and you tend to enunciate clearly. :-) ]

I love your videos in general but I also just love there's a place I go that I know will not just have captions but great captions and that's comforting. I have a problem with dissociating and tuning out all sound and so it is great to come here and know I don't have to be able to hear to enjoy youtube content.

I am of normal hearing but I love captions! Even more than subtitles because they allow you to enjoy content anywhere with all the drama and clarity of the audio. Right now I (and many like me) might choose Netflix over RUclips because captions are more common there so this is a great move for the site as a whole!! Love your videos!

Love this series already! As a person who still learns British English in school it is very helpful to be able to check on a word that I mispronounce to see what is really spelled compared to what I though it was spelled. And I know that not so long ago I was one of the many people to rather click on a video that had subtitles( told you that they teach us British English), just to be able to concentrate more and understand properly. Thank you for sharing the importance of subtitles, hope this kind of message reaches everyone ❤

Working in a very noisy environment when I was younger caused some hearing loss (I can’t have a conversation in public transports, annoying but bearable), so yes I considerably have lowered my use of headphones. I also enjoy a written display of some sort at work, it helps me understand and go past those who prefer talking and commenting rather than listening (ugh!).

I have found your channel because of your videos for the International Week of the Deaf last year. Those videos were so informative and useful! And now there's another series from you, so I'm really happy. Honestly, I'm learning so much about deafness, thank you! ❤️
And yes, captions are really useful when you're learning new language. English is a foreign language for me, so it's much easier to understand some English speakers when I can read captions (:

Yes!! I'm not personally deaf/HoH but I really prefer having captions or subtitles on anything I'm watching because of a lot of things you mentioned in this video. Some reasons include not understanding other accents properly, just not capturing every line and missing important plot aspects, or the sound/audio just being bad. If there are captions/subtitles available I'll choose that option every time!

Just started going back and adding captions to all my videos. It's highlighted how poorly structured what I say can be at times, and I'm hoping with this new form of feedback will make my videos of a higher quality. Totally unexpected benefit to adding captions! Also its great for all the reasons you've stated :) as a side note I've just showed my mum this video and she adores you.

Very informative and interesting. Thank you! I'm looking forward to watching the rest of your videos about captions as they are very important and useful for everyone, not just people who are hard of hearing (and they're not obtrusive at all, Dad!)
I don't have any hearing problems but I often turn on captions on videos when I'm watching them on my tablet while tidying my room. It means that if I move heavy things or rattle boxes etc, I don't miss out on important parts of the sentence in the video. I also find them helpful if the speaker has a particularly strong accent or mumbles certain words sometimes.

Oh my god, your outro is adorable.
Also, captions help me a ton; I have incredible attention issues, and my hearing is poor. They help me focus better, I've never understood why people say they're intrusive.
