  • Going to the movies as a Deaf/HoH person can be exhausting. We don't have the privilege to just walk into any theater, watch a movie and relax.

One of the most annoying things about theaters when they DO provide open captions is this: they often make them available only at showtimes that are the most inconvenient for the majority of people, then they have the nerve to say no one shows up! Example times are: weekday - 10:30 AM, 11:45 AM, 2:30 PM. And that's it. Nothing in the evenings or weekends.

Right!?? They're like... Star Wars: Rogue one Now Showing OC at 2:32 AM lol.

Agreed but it's better to actually be offered even those limited times than be offered no times at all. The general public will NEVER bend for our community so we, as always, have to bend to their whims.

Ok so... I'm not deaf or HoH, but for some reason, I actually use the CC on tv all the time, and I had NO IDEA that theaters had that option!! 😳😁

I use them, too, especially at my Mom’s house because she talks ALL THE TIME during shows, so I need captions to know what is going on!

Those devices are so clunky and barely work. Open captions need to be the standard.

The saddest and most horrible thing about this is, ALL movies in ALL theaters have open captions, they just need to be turned on. The worthless devices (the glasses are a joke and the cup holder things....well hopefully there's a book of the movie so you can save the $30 and read the book cuz that's what you're doing anyway. You miss 99% of what's happening on the screen just reading the captions on the device as these things are not made user friendly and all the wires with the glasses, don't we, as deaf people, have enough burden to carry without having to have the whole theatre full people staring at us in our alien costumes? It's about appeasing the "normal" or "average" movie goer. It too hard for them to ignore the captions? Really??? They could at least have 1 or two showings a week with the open caps turned on.... will they be losing that much money with open caps at 12:30pm on a Tuesday afternoon? I'm surprised no deaf advocates have approached this.

Thank you for this. AMC theaters here in Kansas offer closed captions as part of their features but never really understood what that entailed.
So again, thank you 😊 🙏🏼

I am a hearing person and so is my husband and we both prefer open captions. This is how we always watch tv and movies at home. It is also great for people who speak English as a second language. I think there is 100% more clarity when we are able to read the captions in addition to hearing the audio.

I like your speech! You pronounce your words clearly like a BBC newsreader! Good for viewers not familiar with your accent! Which is more than I can say for many RUclips narrators! They rush through their speech, and, especially with their thick accent, you have to replay the video to fully catch what they are saying!

Am am glad that at least CC is available, as it is a huge help. I have significant hearing loss, and can watch without it, but I often miss a lot, especially if the music or action is really loud and drowns out the talking. I have rarely gone to the theater for 2 decades now because of this, I just tend to wait for the movie to come out on DVD so I can watch it with captions.

Of course! I have a degree in interpreting, worked at TN school for the Deaf for three years and have several Deaf/Hoh friends. I sometimes forget how easy it is for most hearing people to "mess up" when interacting with Deaf or Hoh people. I shared your Lip Reading video to hopefully educate my hearing friends! :)

I’m hard of hearing and I’ve used CC glasses many times and the CC stand up device a couple times. I’d prefer the glasses because I can see the movie better but the problem is that it sometimes doesn’t work and having to worry about the battery. I think the stand up device has a better battery.

If you ever go to Los Angeles, AMC Universal has open caption showings now for new movies. They are usually around 5 or 6 PM. I think AMC is trying to boost that with their locations

Yes, not only for hard hearing/deaf people, but for foreigners too, my wife reads and writes very well in English, but her listening comprehension is not the best yet, when we don't find a subtitled movie she misses like 50% of the dialogs, which makes it hard for her to understand the movie or plot. More open subtitles options need to be available

I couldn't agree more about having open caption. I am only hearing impaired and I struggle catching everything. I didn't even know they had closed captioning devices available until here recently. Then the world shut down. 🤷‍♀️
Would love for all movie theaters to have it be open caption!!

Over the years I've become more ma d more dependent on subtitles just so I don't have to rewind if I don't understand what word the actor just said or someone distracts me while I'm watching at home.

In my country, most of the movies are captioned by default, though they are captioned in Chinese

  • @Sorkabeth

Open captions (always only shown a couple of times a week, always at mid-day showings) were more common for a bit in the late 90's and early 00's but as the personal captioning devices have become more affordable as options for theaters, they have pretty much stopped offering open captions. My local theater had one movie a week, 2 or 3 times a week, open captioned movies until a couple of years ago when they "upgraded" to the glasses. I can choose from more movies/showings now but only if I'm willing to put up with the massive headache I get from wearing the heavy things and constantly shifting my eye focus back and forth between the big screen and the words that are a centimeter from my face. :/

Open captions are mandated by the accessibility regulations in my country (Israel). Foreign films have subtitles anyway, so it's not unusual for patrons to see captions. Even children's movies which are dubbed, have to have captions now, for deaf children.

i know this vid was made a couple years ago, but i find it frustrating that the bay area isnt the forefront of theater CC technology. hopefully it's gotten a little better by now. Seems like there could be some sort of app made for this?

I'm not deaf or HoH but I'm autistic and have had trouble with movies without CC my whole life. I miss a lot of what is happening and often don't know who is who, either! I only found out recently that cinemas even consider this. But after seeing a few videos on CC I'm thinking I'm better off just missing some of what's happening than using the stuff they've provided. Which is a real shame!

There should definitely be showings available for the HoH, but every showing should NOT have captions. Yes, you should be able to watch the movies the way you want, but so should I. Captions are distracting, and take away from the show. I don’t even like having captions on anime. Saying that every showing should have captions, and hearing people should stuff it is pretty stupid. That’s like saying you should stuff it because the devices are uncomfortable.
