  • I watched the 1963 film, The Pink Panther, starring Peter Sellers, David Niven, Capucine, Claudia Cardinale, Robert Wagner, James Lanphier, and many others. I hope that this is the absolute first one out of the many, if not, you guys can roast me in the comment section! I enjoyed this film, AND I believe I am becoming a better detective myself!

"Tell me, inspector - Signor Phantom - all those robberies. How did you ever manage it?"
"Well, you know... it wasn't easy."
Fun Fact: An animated Pink Panther was created for the opening credits because writer and director Blake Edwards felt that the credits would benefit from some kind of cartoon character. David H. DePatie and Friz Freleng decided to personify the film's eponymous jewel, and the Pink Panther character was chosen by Edwards from over a hundred alternative panther sketches. The Pink Panther introduced in the opening credits became a popular film and television character in his own right, beginning with the cartoon short The Pink Phink (1964) the following year.
Frozen Balls Fact: David Niven recalled in one of his funniest anecdotes that his private parts got frostbitten during the skiing scene, which was shot on an extremely cold day in the Italian Alps. He said that, reasoning that alcohol made you feel warm, he dipped the "parts" in a glass of whiskey. He said that it worked but the pain was excruciating.
Chaotic Casting Fact: With just two weeks to go before shooting begun, the producers decided that Ava Gardner's erratic lifestyle could affect filming and decided not to offer her the part of Madame Clouseau. Capucine was hired in a hurry, but Peter Ustinov's wife felt this would affect the calibre of the production and told him to withdraw. From this chaos, Peter Sellers became an international superstar.

The movie was supposed to unquestionably star David Niven, but Peter Sellers caused so much laughter as Clousseau that Niven, classy as always, surrendered the movie to him. Similarly, when Niven was the A-lister in the epic "Around the World in Eighty Days", he yielded the actual spotlight to Mexican comic genius Cantinflas.

There is a film called "After the Fox" one of Peter Sellers funniest movies. At one point he is directing a film, and one actor asks "What is this seen about", he paces a few steps and shouts "Nothing its about nothing!" while doing a very specific hand motion. In the TV show Seinfeld, Jerry asks George what it the TV show going to be about and Jason Alexander say "Nothing, it's about nothing" and does the exact hand motion as Peter Sellars did (30 years earlier).

"The Pink Panther" series had a long run, even after the death of Peter Sellers in 1980. The next movie with Inspector Clouseau is called "A Shot In The Dark" with Peter Sellers and Elke Sommer. A few years later a movie called "Inspector Clousseau" was made, but this time starring Alan Arkin in the lead role. This movie didn't do as well as the previous films. Then in 1975, "The Return of the Pink Panther" brought back Peter Sellers as Inspector Clousseau. There were three more Pink Panther films after that with Peter Sellers, the last one released after the actor's death used footage from previous films to piece together what they could of an unfinished film. Yet, there were even more Pink Panther movies released later on. The last two starred Steve Martin who used his own comic style to fill the role of Inspector Clouseau.

This a spoof of the famous fictional Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, "created by British writer Agatha Christie. Poirot is one of Christie's most famous and long-running characters, appearing in 33 novels, two plays, and more than 50 short stories published between 1920 and 1975." (from Wikipedia.)
The best-known story with him in it is Murder On The Orient Express.
There have been a number of movies over the years portraying him, often by English-speaking actors who do so with the most ridiculous attempts of a French/Belgian accent. (For those who want to see the opposite - which many consider the Gold Standard of these depictions, watch anything by David Suchet - these episodes are available for free on RUclips.)

Advice: Sellers is the only Inspector Clouseau worth watching. 2 movies were made without him, one with Alan Arkin as Clouseau, and the other much later, with Steve Martin as Clouseau. Don't bother, they can't hold a candle to Peter Sellers, they are waste of time. Why they thought they could substitute someone else for the great Sellers is beyond me. Perhaps they were looking for a tax write off. To me the film was more about David Niven being the big star that he was, and lots of confusing intrigue. Rule: when you run out of ideas, throw in a car chase lol. This first Panther film was more about the story and the cast, but after this they discovered the Clouseau character played by Sellers was more "sellable" [pun intended] and focused more on Clouseau screwing up, which was the right decision. You will find A Shot in the Dark and Return of the Pink Panther probably the funniest of the films.

Stradivarious are incredibly valuable stringed instruments, reputed to have finer and more delicate tone than any others made. Those created by Antionio Stradivan in the 17 & 18th centuries are considered the best of the best, and are now extemely rare, and nearly priceless. So that was the joke, of the clumsy inspector crunching his violin.
Edit: The real joke is that sound quality tests as recent as 2014 have shown no difference between those instruments and others. It's a case of 'The Emperor's New Clothes' -- with reputation and hype causing them to be desirable, and anyone who could not tell any difference was assured that their hearing was simply not as finely attuned as those 'in the know.'

I actually saw the Return of the Pink Panther before this, but Peter Sellers is great. There's a scene I won't spoil from the Return of the Pink Panther that is fantastic involving Clouseau's assistant and it's insane. This is Peter Sellers' role, whatever you think about Steve Martin. He's usually better when there's chaos going on around him and he's just reacting to it and getting exasperated, not when he's creating the chaos. Bringing Down the House co-starring Queen Latifah and Eugene Levy is a good example. He's not the other the top one, he's trying to calm things down and eventually he just loses it. But Peter Sellers was great. Being Human was one of his last movies, but also one of his best. He plays a very naive, innocent man who is mistaken for a genius.

Well actually you are still not watching the quintessential movie in the franchise. In this, the original Pink Panther movie, the genre is a light drama with merely glimpses of comedy and Inspecter Clouseau (Peter Sellers) is only a supporting role. The movie itself, therefore, is largely forgettable (with the exception of Sellers) because of it. So to really get an idea of why people are so wild about this series you need to see the sequels where the producers realized that Inspecter Clouseau needs to be the main protagonist.
And I recommend you try this one more time with the spinoff "A Shot in the Dark". This in my opinion is one of the funniest movies ever made. I've seen it several times and I have never gotten through it without laughing out loud. Seriously, if you truly want to experience and understand the Pink Panther you need to see Peter Sellers unchained in all his zaniness. And "A Shot in the Dark" is the best movie in the franchise to see it.
And after that - one of the greatest comedies of all time - the Marx Brothers in "A Night at the Opera".
