      The first "Pink Panther" ist the best example of a story driven comedy and finds the perfect balance for this type of movie, but since "A Shot In The Dark" the series introduced Chief Inspector Dreyfuss (Herbert Lom), who is the best counterpart you could find for Clouseau and this cranked up the comedy and slapstick to 300%. The third one "The Return of the Pink Panther" (1975) is good, but was very uneven, but "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" (1976) and "Revenge of the Pink Panther" (1978) are mastepieces of slapstick comedy. Everything else after those two movies are not worth a watch including the awful ones with Steve Martin.
      But you need to love pure slapstick like Laurel & Hardy, because those were the main inspiration of director Blake Edwards.

    It is amazing to realise that David Niven and Robert Wagner were the intended stars of this movie and that Peter Sellers was brought in simply for a cameo appearance as Inspector Clouseau.
    However, when Director Blake Edwards witnessed Seller's genius at improvising scenes, the Clouseau role was expanded and new scenes were written and filmed.
    Even David Niven admitted afterwards that ( even though he had top billing ) Peter Sellers was the real star of The Pink Panther film.

    The second film, "A Shot in the Dark" is my favorite from the franchise. It wasn't originally written as an Inspector Clouseau movie, but was an adaptation of a stage play. They rewrote it to include Clouseau. It's the only movie without "Pink Panther" in the title.
    Also, you definitely have to watch them all. Peter Sellers continued making the Pink Panther movies until he passed away. They had a following and made profit all the way through. They even made one more in his honor.

    • @ink-cow
      @ink-cow Месяц назад +1

      @@shuboy05 That may have been the case for the later Panther films, but not Shot in the Dark. It was released only about a half-year later than Pink Panther.
      Sellers went on to avoid Clouseau after that for ten years. During that time, the studio tried to revive the character with Alan Arkin in the mostly forgotten Inspector Clouseau.
      I've never heard the story about him using Panther to fund Being There, but besides that Sellers' career was on the skids by 1974, and returning to Panther restored his status as an A-lister and also restored his finances. That kind of success of course helps in getting backing from producers and studios for other films.

    My favorite of the sequels is "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" although by then the series has mutated into something entirely different.
    At the time of release, David Niven was 53 to Claudia Cardinale (Dala)'s 25. So, yes, quite an age gap.
    Claudia Cardinale had worked mostly in the Italian cinema. (In this same year of 1963, she was in two of the all-time Italian classics: Luccino Visconti's "The Leopard" and Federico Fellini's "8 1/2". This was her American breakthrough and she spent most of the 1960s in Hollywood, but her best role was in Sergio Leone's "Once Upon a Time in the West" (which like all the "spaghetti Westerns" was filmed in Italy) and she decided to stay at home and work in Italian and French cinema after that.
    Cardinale is still with us, aged 86, as is Robert Wagner (currently 94 years old).
    For more Robert Wagner, may I recommend "A Kiss Before Dying" (1956)? A showcase role, and besides, I want you to start doing films based the works of Ira Levin, from that to "Rosemary's Baby" (1968), "The Stepford Wives" (1973), "The Boys from Brazil" (1978), "Deathtrap" (1982) and "Sliver" (1993). Uncle Ira (not actually my uncle, just a friend of my late father) was a master of surprises and suspense, and you should enjoy his catalogue quite nicely.

    There seems to be a running theme with Pink Panther reactions. The majority of reactors either start on the middling Steve Martin versions, wonder what all the fuss is about then never go back to the franchise; or they watch this original Pink Panther movie, find it a moderately entertaining curiosity from the past, then never move on. A couple of reactors have moved on to Shot in the Dark, but not much further. You're all missing out on the best one 'Pink Panther Strikes again', which is a crying shame. I really hope you carry on with the series, as the franchise is basically a showcase of Peter Sellers' genius above all.

  • @Jeff_Lichtman
    @Jeff_Lichtman Месяц назад +1

    There were nine Pink Panther movies with Peter Sellers, and two more reboot movies with Steve Martin. The second in the series, A Shot in the Dark (1964), is one of the best. Inspector Clouseau is the main character in all but this first one.
    The Pink Panther theme and the song "Meglio Stasera" were by Henry Mancini, one of the great composers of movie music. He also wrote the music for Breakfast at Tiffany's (including Moon River), Hatari! (Baby Elephant Walk), Days of Wine and Roses, Charade, and Victor/Victoria, as well as the theme for the TV series Peter Gunn.
    Claudia Cardinale didn't speak English, so her lines were dubbed by Gale Garnett, who also had a hit song in 1964 with "We'll Sing in the Sunshine."

    "How much older is he than she is?"
    It didn't used to be an awful thing for an older man to seek a younger woman. Men were valued for their achievements and wealth (which take time) and women for their youth and fertility (which fade rapidly). Hence, younger women sought older men, and vice versa.
    The trend of older men being considered "pigs" for seeking out younger women is quite a modern one.

    • @jsharp3165
      @jsharp3165 Месяц назад

      Oh they were seen as pigs back then, too. As soon as that young fertile wife "faded rapidly", the accomplished gentleman would just acquire a new girl on the side. And gaslight his wife that she was the reason he had to have his needs met elsewhere. This was portrayed as rakish and charming by culture but was despised by the women it was happening to. It was tolerated and kept quiet because women weren't allowed to have achievements and wealth of their own. Now they make their own money and don't have to put up with it any more.

      My sister is a big fan of Jane Austen. She says Jane Austen has is a formula for marriage that goes something like this (paraphrased), double the woman's age, minus 13, equals the ideal age for the husband. 20 x 2 -13 = 27, or 22 x 2 - 13 = 31. I probably have the formula wrong, but it is something like that.

    Many of those old British comedies were based on theatrical farces, with people rushing in and out of the same room through different doors. Timing was everything! David Niven also played James Bond in the original Casino Royale, and teamed up with Peter Sellers again in a very silly film Murder By Death which also starred Alec Guinness (Kenobe in Star Wars) and Maggie Smith (Harry Potter). Yes, all these films are now very dated but are still lots of fun, as much as anything because they were crammed full of stars all happy to take minor roles. The original Italian Job with Michael Caine is a similar film in that sense. Very silly but so many famous actors to spot.

    Sellars was a magnifician and a delight to watch. Unfortunately he also had his demons.
