@@madpadukNot quite. Sorkin reused the line asking about the virtue of a proportional response, but the emotions behind it are totally opposite. In the movie, Pres. Shepherd is concerned about civilian casualties, like the hypothetical Libyan janitor. In the show, Syrian Air Defense bombs a U.S. transport plane carrying Pres. Bartlet’s personal physician, and he’s pissed off and wants to basically level Syria to the ground (a military aide asks him if he wants to “carpet-bomb Damascus”). Bartlet wants a “disproportional response,” until Leo talks him down.

Michael Douglas, Annette Benning, and Martin Sheen play their roles very well in this movie. However, this movie really shows the versatility of Michael J Fox, an actor robbed of so many more performances due to Parkinson's disease. Back to the Future launched him into the movie landscape while Family Ties introduced him to American audiences through television. Other films kept him in the family-friendly genre for a while, such as Teen Wolf and Doc Hollywood. This film and his trip into horror with The Frighteners showed that Michael can play the very serious roles. Homeward Bound and Atlantis the Lost Empire showcase his voice acting ability. Spin City forever stands as his best adult role on TV. He now stands as an example of never letting a physical challenge from stopping him from speaking out and moving towards finding a permanent end to every neurological disease and disorder.

Everything from nuclear holocaust to a bitter divorce. So basically the same stuff.

Doing the research for this movie is what got Sorkin to write The West Wing. He had so much information about how American politics in D.C. work, and so many ideas for stories about these characters, and no way to fit it into a 2-hour film, so he pitched it as a TV series. You can absolutely see who all of these characters become: AJ (played by Martin Sheen who becomes Jed Bartlet) becomes Leo (same name as Sydney's boss); Mrs. Chapel (President's secretary) become Mrs. Landingham; Louis (Michael J Fox) is a hybrid of Josh and Sam; Leon (David Paymer) becomes CJ, and so on. Beyond Martin Sheen's promotion, Anna Deveare Smith, who plays Robin McCall here, played Nancy McNally on West Wing; Nina Siemazko (Sydney's roommate) played Bartlet's middle daughter, Ellie; Joshua Malina (whom you recognized from Scandal) played Will Bailey on West Wing, and so on. He referred to this as the dress rehearsal for West Wing.

This was one of only a handful of movies my mum owned on DVD so I know it backwards and forwards. I've come to appreciate it myself as a kind of precursor to 'The West Wing' which is one of my favourite TV series of all time. Aaron Sorkin wrote the script for this then went on to create the series casting Martin Sheen as the President and a few of the other actors in different roles.

Another great reaction, Cassie, and congrats on you and your sister for attending the premiere for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning!
Had a feeling you'd like The American President. 😄 Those that's watched both this and The West Wing can tell that Aaron Sorkin created them both. BTW, Shepard's and A.J.'s argument at the pool table in this film is now reminding me so much of the arguments Bartlet and Leo often got into on West Wing. 😁
As mentioned, Michael Douglas has quite the career both in front of and behind the camera, and it might even match up to his father Kirk's at this point. He's done a wide range of movies that you might want to check out. You apparently just watched Romancing the Stone, so you can also look into films such as Fatal Attraction, Jewel of the Nile (sequel to Romancing the Stone), Wall Street, Basic Instinct, and A Perfect Murder (though you may want to watch the movie it's based on first, Dial M for Murder).

It also stars Sam Elliott as the president's advisor. It's a really terrific political drama beautifully written with a great cast. Joan was fantastic in this.

I know you had said in the Con Air reaction that Romancing the Stone is another favorite of your dad's that you plan to watch. That stars Michael Douglas. His big career days were the late 80s through the 90s. Then he wasn't really in anything once he married Catherine Zeta-Jones and started a family. Then he was more recently in Ant-Man as Hank Pym. I saw an interview when that came out where he said his teenage son said his career was really gonna take off from being in Marvel. His son really doesn't understand that Michael Douglas was one of the major heartthrobs of the 90s because it was like a decade before he was born.
Honestly, most of my fourth-of-July traditions were in my childhood and have kind of disappeared in recent years now that my family lives all over the country. But my favorite is that we used to hike 2 miles up Barr Trail (the 13-mile trail up Pikes Peak) and sit on a rock that was kind of an overlook. We called it Independence Day Ledge, and you could see all the fireworks in Colorado Springs from there. (You can't see the fireworks closest to it in Manitou Springs because a hill is in the way.) We stopped doing it once the Barr trail parking lot started charging for parking.
