God Bless you for being an honest and systematic contractor. It's very hard to come by these days; there are so many con artists who don't even know how to use a drill and making thousands off innocent people! You have a lot of integrity!
Very informative. I couldn't help laughing, when right after you explain how and where to walk on tiles - the helper just goes and walks anywhere and everywhere. Appreciate the info.
To all the viewers ...when I post videos on youtube , I exposed to criticism , some good , some bad. I appreciate all the comments good or bad, they are all constructive to my knowledge. if I don't reply is because I have so many videos on youtube that is almost impossible to reply to all comments. my main Idea is to share my knowledge with the viewers and hope I can help some in the crowd to become a new generation of roofers ( not handyman). I don't get paid to post my videos , I just do it for the fun of it . I think sharing is caring and I do my part ! Greetings to all the roofers and viewers that make this channel interesting. Thanks to all of you ... Eric Garcia exist in RUclips . Thank you very much!
Hi Eric, Thanks for taking the time to post your videos. I am in dire need of a roof repair, and I was wondering if you service the North Fontana area? If so, what's the name of your company so I can look you up and give you a call? Thank you.
Gracias chapin.. muy interesante.este video.. llamame. Erick. Cuando tengas tiempo.. nesecito ayuda. Con el techo de mi casa gracias..... ando al sur de Los Angeles. 714 5746089..
This video is much better than the shorter one. This one shows Mr. Ciaoping? Bending the edges. I never completely understood valley flashing before this video. The flashing works better and is self cleaning. Thanks Eric. Very interesting all the way through.
I always take a strip of metal and lock it on the freeze lock of valley and nail it that way I have no holes in valley and then I wire all my tile or slate for Valley! You Do a good job, wish we had more people around Ohio like you,
You have some good tips for the rest of us but if I could offer you a couple tips for yourself. I've been roofing for 29 years - a licensed contractor for 19 years. So after you remove all the tiles & clean all the dirt & debris out of the valley & replace the narrow valley metal with 24" valley metal as you said, when it's time to reinstall the tile, cut the top corner of these flat tiles & reshape them so the water flowing down the valley does not hit the top point of each cut tile & get diverted outward but rather the water will hit the relief cut portion of each cut tile & the water will be pushed back to the center of the valley during the rain. Also leave a small gap between the valley tiles so that the water can flow better & carry the small debris that build up over time down the valley & off the roof. This should prevent requiring two layers of felt paper in this area & prevent the valley from leaking ever again. The problems are that the natural shape of the tiles in the valley diverts water outward away from the center of the valley so reshaping the top point of the tiles to better control water flow & leaving a gap to carry out the dirt & small debris should solve the inherent problems of flat tile valleys indefinitely. Let me know if you want an illustration of how to reshape the valley tiles to promote better water flow if you don't understand what I mean. Try it & you'll see for yourself.
Duster Dan I'm just a homeowner handyman. I've used videos to learn how to do lots of stuff. I wasn't able to follow what you meant about cutting the tops of the tiles a certain way to enhance water flow. Is there a link to a video which shows what you are describing? That would be real helpful for us visual learners! Thanks.
It's hard to receive any advice in a world full of critics. Nobody likes to admit when they are wrong, but it can be priceless for those who do. Humility is the most valuable asset to anyone who desires to continue improving their specialty & the sky is the limit for those who have enough humility to receive from others & grow in their understanding. Thanks for your empathy. I appreciate it & I simply prayed for Eric cause I think he's one of the few who care enough to help people when they need things done right on their roofs. Good roofers are very few & far between. Have a blessed weekend friend!
You are welcome to look me up on youtube. I have my own videos there. Don't know if I've done a video yet on valleys but that would be a good place for you to start & you could follow up with questions for me from there. Far as Eric goes, I want to respect his page & not post anything of my own here. Eric seems like a good guy & the last thing I want is to offend him. Thanks for asking.
Thumbs up! This is my exact tile (91939 area code). Glad I found your channel. Of course, now I know my roof has valley flashing that is not correct!!! 😡
wow thank you so much for all the good information. we are in the process of buying a house that has this kind of roof, its having problems and its 21 years old. (oregon coast) we are very nervous we have never dealt with this kind of roof before so were unsure if we should buy the house or now. the realtor has a professional roofer coming out to look at it Monday.
Thanks Eric for the informative video! The easiest part looks like is removing the tiles...The hardest part is reinstalling them 🤣 I would get so confuse 🤔 You got a subscriber 👍
Hi Eric, Thank you for posting this. This is great information not only for roofers but also for home owners. I have same problem now and the contractor I spoke to wants to do the same and put plastic bat extension to help. How much does this cost today in what you did here?
I liked seeing this repair ,when we break up our valley metal at the shop that edge lip you created with the hammer we build into the valley metal and call it a standing seam detail on our shop drawings .
At 6 min 13 seconds, you said, "This is the problem with tiles", so what do you suggest for roofing? I actually have exact same tiles and my roof is leaking now, hopefully I will find a good roofer soon. What should I expect for repair cost on average? My roof is 10 years old. Thank you for the video.
Is a tile roof just set in place? I came here hoping to find out how to remove a small section of my tile roof to install attic vents. I assumed each tile was nailed in place but I guess that's not the case? What keeps them from sliding off the roof? Sorry I'm from the midwest and we dont have tile roofs so this is new to me in Vegas.
Do you do valleys that tiles don’t touch each other in the valley center rather they are apart 4-6 inches The water will run easily the only thing is you need to fill concrete under the tiles in the valley. Do you recommend this? Thank you
Mahalo nui ( Muchas Gracias, Senor!),,,very instructive video - now I know what to look for in my concrete tile roof repairs...one suggestion, use a tripod/bipod to steady your camera - the shaking was very nauseating...overall, great job!
I’m trying to do my own felt repair.. I have a tile roof , what’s the best way to nail it down..? With a nail gun or hammer it down..? Also looks like there’s various lengths of nails any suggestion?
We don't do that in Australia. Personally I use locking sheet metal pliers to turn the ends of the valley back up as usually it's crushed, then install a 50mm bitumen impregnated valley seal between the valley and the tile.
How do we keep all the dirt from building up in the valleys. The moss grows on the cold side of my roof, and becomes dirt over time. That dirt builds up in the valley and creates a dam making the water travel out on to the battens and leaks. Should we cut an open valley to help dirt to pass through? Will the edge bent up cure this problem. I believe that they had put pieces of tile on the metal to hold up the tile. That also help to crate the dam effect. Kirk
I'm re-doing one of my valleys and I just want to make sure I do it properly. From what I am seeing it looks like you run the courses of paper from one side up about 10+ inches or so up the other side, weaving it so that the lower courses are under the upper courses. Then you lay the metal valley flashing over the courses. My question is, do you need do adhear the flashing edges to the courses of paper below? I saw a video of a guy in SoCal that did that. Also, I took up one side of the valley and noticed the existing job looks like this: Ice/Water shield running up the valley, metal flashing on top of ice/water shield, then the coures of paper overlap on top of the flashing. The courses of paper are stuck to the ice/water shield that is exposes on either side of the flashing. I am planning on using I/W shield so should my courses overlap the metal flashing or go under the metal flashing... Do what your video shows but add an extra step of I/W shield under the course weaves?
The tile cuts on the left side of the valley where the cuts aren’t supported by tile channel drop, this leaves a clear gap. Do you not have clips to hold them together? Seems a very shallow pitch with minimum headlap this can’t help? I
one of the first things when you started the video and went up on the roof you said how to walk on it your worker is walking all over the place !....? I always watch your videos I love you videos.
Looking at the end of the video now. That channel looks super tight. Isn't there supposed to be some space in the channel? In my area, there are more than a couple of roof problems. some were solved by just clearing out the channel. It seems the water was meeting some resistance in the channel, and probably puddling up and going over to the side. I'm not a roofer. Not even close. That's just been the experience with a few of the houses here.
i have a question to clean out the valleys you recommend removing the tiles ? and also if theres corner chipped tiles should i glueback or just replace the whole tile? ..thank you
Me as an repair man . Tiles are a very problem ,debris get blown in the tiles and over years it traps on the valley and water back up. So expect more leaks on other areas....
cutting the tiles 1.5 inches is a new thing that came out 20 years ago because the new generation of roofers didn't know how to roof the valleys the right way look at old buildings and count how many roofs have open valley? none, why? because it was done by professional roofers not rookies trying to do things right. Thank you Eric
Great video. Unfortunately you are in southern california, otherwise I would hire you to do the work. I am in San Jose, ca. I have exactly the same color tile as in this video. I just wonder if you can tell me where I can get the same tile.
Why didn’t you install a new 24” valley ? Didn’t you say the previous roofers made a mistake installing a new 18” valley (shingle valley) why didn’t u remove it? Just wondering
I also have a tile roof with a valley leak. Mine is about the same length as that shown in the video here. I called two roofing contractors to come to the house and give me estimates to fix it. They both wanted to completely replace the underlayment on the side of the house with the leak and materially expanded the scope of the “needed repair”. One bid was $22,000, the other over $30,000. Needless to say, both bids were rejected. Goes to show you, educate yourself!
Isn't debris going to build dams under the tile like the first time? A bigger gap so that the water and debris flow properly would prevent that The water wouldn't have reached the hole in the felt if the valley wasn't clogged with debris
my idea would b to run felt or ice and water barrrier down the valley and than run your felt horizontally through the valleys overlapping each side and than the valley metal. your guaranteed that your valley will have 3 layers for sure and one whole one longways if wayer does get in it
4/20/21 So based on costs vs effective value installing a breathable membrane over the entire roof before the concrete tiles are placed might have merit.
Aquí en Virginia se le deja 6 pulgadas de exposición en los vallis 6 pa cada lado y el metal. 10 pulgadas a cada lado. Luego 18 pulgadas de ice/water shield 25 años de garantía. Fijos Buen jajaja gayos Soy metalero 100%%%
Depending on the valley do you see it damaged or did the home owner complain about a leak on that side of the house. Dont make more work were its not needed...
It would be better if you put one strip of felt all the way down the valley then put the valley flashing back and then you run the felt over the valley flashing and cut it 3 inches away from the ridge of the valley and also cut the tile 2 inches away from the valley ridge
you sell them all the time, again cutting the tile is not what i was thought by my mentors and the roofing school, leave that to the rookies. it seems you don't understand that tile is for costmetic look as standing seam metal roofs. you have to hide your metal flashings as much as you can. now when people look at your roof will see a roof tile with a rusted, old line of metal in the middle of the valley. nice!!
Roofing Solutions By Eric Garcia u are a good roofer but being closed minded to new ideas means u wont lern good common sence info cuttin back valley tiles does work..we u know just as well as i do, the little steip of metal. wont rust or look ugly if u cut straight.anyway i thaught u paint all yer flashings(ugly if u overspray also paint eats shingles) thanx for vids tho ..u do good work for most part..happy trails amigo
@@Garciasroofing Great video and solution. If you want to increase your knowledge I would suggest searching youtube for Australian vids. Unlike America the majority of our roofs are concrete or terracotta tile. Lots of metal too, very few shingle
why dont you run a peice off felt longways under the valley than run them through? even if irs not shingles pr self adhered. atleast you have one going through long ways to stop any rhat does get through
That's some outfit there . But joking apart closed valleys are the worst thing . Just look at all the debris stops the water flowing . The best and easiest way is to cut a 4in channel .
That's it show every one how to do it themselves so then they won't need you . That's exactly why closed valleys are no good everytime without exception you need open valleys so the debris cannot build up and the water can flow school boy stuff.
you the man! i've called 5 companies and no one is available for 2-3 weeks. So i just did it myself with your help. thanks
Great Info Eric, I had to do this fix this years ago. After 7 years it leaked again. After watching this video I realize I should have done more.
To all the viewers ...when I post videos on youtube , I exposed to criticism , some good , some bad.

I'm not sure why Eric developed the attitude. Some people just aren't real good at accepting advice.

superb job Eric. very well done.

Great video, Eric. Thank you.
You are the MAN!!!!
cut the tile away from the center of the valley about 2 inches so the water can flow. otherwise leaves and dirt build up an water flows side ways.
We do all tile roof valleys that way there is 8" clearance where water and leaf etc. can freely flow downwards.
Exactly so the water can flow and the so debris won’t be clogged in between make the water find a way to flow
The tile cuts on the left side of the valley where the cuts aren’t supported by tile channel drop, this leaves a clear gap.
Do you not have clips to hold them together?

Lo dejaron igual que chiste tiene que removieron la teja y no recortaron el valle
En poco tiempo va seguir liquidando mejor aprenden primero a los detalles
Great video! Informative and effective! Thank you!
When you bend the edge over, what is the height? 1/2, 3/4, or 1 inch approximately?

Me as an repair man . Tiles are a very problem ,debris get blown in the tiles and over years it traps on the valley and water back up. So expect more leaks on other areas....
Is there suppossed to be a certain distance from tile and valley flashing? it seems like if theyre to close, mud and crud build up

Eric
my house is 13 years old with concrete tiles and closed valley
Chulada de trabajos paisa
Sin duda son los mejores
Te agradecería bastante que hicieras un vídeo de una chimenea o de como instalar los flashin
Just wondering do you have a video on how you put tile over the one inch flange you made?
You guys are awesome. I wish there roofers like you in the Bay Area.
Excellent video!
Awesome, thank you
Do u have many boxgutters, flat lock decks standing seam etc down there in cali
Great video. Unfortunately you are in southern california, otherwise I would hire you to do the work. I am in San Jose, ca. I have exactly the same color tile as in this video. I just wonder if you can tell me where I can get the same tile.
how do you prevent debri going underneath the tiles and valley?
Best in the business bro
I need this done to my home, i wish you lived in south Florida.
Why didn’t you install a new 24” valley ? Didn’t you say the previous roofers made a mistake installing a new 18” valley (shingle valley) why didn’t u remove it? Just wondering
you said the 18" valley flashing was no good but yet you reuse it? for 50 bucks you could get the 24?
18 inch valley is fine , allow 6 inches of side lap on each side and that leaves 6 inches in the centre of the valley for the pine needles to escape.
Really good 👍
I also have a tile roof with a valley leak. Goes to show you, educate yourself!

i have a roof excatly like this one can you guys come to the palm spring area
Thank You Sir !
Hello where do you do work at ? I m located in San Bernardino
Ktal Mr,buen video ,es por ESO k Ami no me gusta dejar Las Tejas tan cerradas
Where are you located?
Yo. Come to my crib in Arizona bro. I've had roofers"fix" same leak 3 times and today same place is leaking. I need help please!
Compa cuanto cobra como pa liampiar El valley
Eso es lo que tiene mi techo. Parece q lo hicieron barato los dueños últimos. Pregunta, este techo también lleva la lámina drip edge? my idea would b to run felt or ice and water barrrier down the valley and than run your felt horizontally through the valleys overlapping each side and than the valley metal. your guaranteed that your valley will have 3 layers for sure and one whole one longways if wayer does get in it
do you not need battens under those tiles
Where are you located Eric?
Sir how many meters or milimiter the standard width of the vally plate?
4/20/21 So based on costs vs effective value installing a breathable membrane over the entire roof before the concrete tiles are placed might have merit.
Now you see why you should not install closed valleys. They build up with all of the crud from the trees. Open valleys always.
Thanks for the video bro 👍
que chingon compa gracias
I Live in Lakewood are you available for a roof leak repair ?
Aquí en Virginia se le deja 6 pulgadas de exposición en los vallis 6 pa cada lado y el metal. 10 pulgadas a cada lado. Luego 18 pulgadas de ice/water shield 25 años de garantía. Fijos Buen jajaja gayos Soy metalero 100%%%
You need to remove the head lug over the valley metal so the water can actually flow
Why didn’t you replace the valley with a 24 inch one?
Love the video...but say "fastest least expensive" instead of fasted and cheapest. Least expensive is much better. But what ever. Cool video
Anyone honest like you, that you might know in Sacramento CA? Btw great videos y siguele hechando ganas.
Did you ever find one? I'm in need of a quote for repairs in Rocklin just north of you.
UK roofer here and looking at how American tiled roofs are finished are so wrong.
You look like a very professional roofer. Do you do work in the Palm Springs Area? Can you post your email or website?
What about the other side of the valley that was probably done wrong
Depending on the valley do you see it damaged or did the home owner complain about a leak on that side of the house. Dont make more work were its not needed...
It would be better if you put one strip of felt all the way down the valley then put the valley flashing back and then you run the felt over the valley flashing and cut it 3 inches away from the ridge of the valley and also cut the tile 2 inches away from the valley ridge
I sell these repairs all the time. I promise you if you cut your valleys back water an leaves will flow.
you sell them all the time, again cutting the tile is not what i was thought by my mentors and the roofing school, leave that to the rookies. it seems you don't understand that tile is for costmetic look as standing seam metal roofs. you have to hide your metal flashings as much as you can. now when people look at your roof will see a roof tile with a rusted, old line of metal in the middle of the valley. nice!!
rust is better than leaks
Roofing Solutions By Eric Garcia u are a good roofer but being closed minded to new ideas means u wont lern good common sence info
cuttin back valley tiles does work..we u know just as well as i do, the little steip of metal. wont rust or look ugly if u cut straight.anyway i thaught u paint all yer flashings(ugly if u overspray also paint eats shingles) thanx for vids tho ..u do good work for most part..happy trails amigo
@@Garciasroofing Great video and solution. If you want to increase your knowledge I would suggest searching youtube for Australian vids. Unlike America the majority of our roofs are concrete or terracotta tile. Lots of metal too, very few shingle
buen jale doblar el metal buens idea.
Also flashing around vent pipe is installed incorrectly
What part of California are u in?
Orange County
@@Garciasroofing i have some broken roof tiles, where can I find replacements?
Jajajaja good job!!!
why dont you run a peice off felt longways under the valley than run them through? even if irs not shingles pr self adhered. atleast you have one going through long ways to stop any rhat does get through
That's some outfit there . But joking apart closed valleys are the worst thing . Just look at all the debris stops the water flowing . The best and easiest way is to cut a 4in channel .
Hey erick este como puedo contactarte
Trabajo para una compania y nesecitamos un good roofer como puedo contactarte
That's it show every one how to do it themselves so then they won't need you . That's exactly why closed valleys are no good everytime without exception you need open valleys so the debris cannot build up and the water can flow school boy stuff.
