I’m a total hypocrite. I tell all my friends that they’re not ugly. Whenever they say they’re ugly, I always argue with them. And it’s true, in my eyes they’re pretty. That's because a mirror flips what you see when it reflects light, which means your upset reaction is based on the fact that you see something different that you expect. Until cameras were invented nobody could see themselves the correct way round, which is why he have no natural way of handling two different versions of ourselves at once. You need to accept that whatever you see in a photo looks just as good as in the mirror, and focus only on the you that you're most used to seeing. You'll drive yourself mad otherwise.

In my opinion this should have a different title to help your view on yourself. Instead of the title being growing up ugly it could be Growing up Insecure because it’s changing your view on your self stating “I have Insecurities” has a different effect than “I was/are ugly”. (Plus it might cause less haters to feed at attack). The first step overcoming it is stating it as a problem instead of dwelling on it because you could potentially be stuck with that opinion. And it is a terrific mental illness that usually media doesn't talk about much. Imagine looking at the mirror and not being able to recognize your body features, getting scared about the proportions of own body (they look exaggerated) and getting obsessed everyday with small insignificant flaws in your body. This illness usually drives a person to anorexia, but it is also responsible for esthetic operations like breast implants or reconstruction of the face.

Great video! I can relate to this, especially being a black girl in a predominately white town. The beauty standards we’re subjected as women in this patriarchy are not fair, and for the longest time prevented me from seeing myself as beautiful. Even Snapchat filters that lightened my skin and made my nose smaller only reminded me of what I could never achieve. But after realizing that I saw beauty in everyone else, I found that it was unfair to put down myself. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder; if you remember that you’re beautiful and strong and amazing, then you are. And there will always be at least one person in the world who thinks you’re beautiful, so you are.

I started out as a child model, _but was very shy._ I became an easy target, even had a girl slap me with a stapler because she liked my bf and the staple was lodged in my skin; the popular girls used my lack of social skills & ostracized me before 4th grade. I quickly stopped brushing my hair & gained weight, my own dad calling out my weight gain & rats-nest hair; still average weight but fatter than the popular girls. My parents tried but my dad thought the 3 children's care was women's work; my mom also had to work to help pay for our family of 3 kids, so there was only so much she could do. I eventually started earning my own money & found a dance instructor; She became my mentor & helped me to understand that people use terrible words to make themselves feel better than others, because they're hurting too. When I danced, I felt beautiful. I still only see about 1/4 of my pictures as pretty & only like my friends amature photography of me, but I've learned to be confident in my accumulated skillset instead. I noticed confidence has a lot greater effect on people's perception of your beauty than how good your makeup is, or how interesting your hairdo is. Please, understand we are our own greatest critics but you also need to be your own greatest cheerleader. I choose to be happy with myself & no one else has the right to take that away from me.
I grew up super ugly and bullied and I knew from the beginning that no one would ever like me because of how I looked. But I learned that being kind, even to my enemies made at least one or 2 people be my friend, and I eventually learned that being really good at hobbies makes you a lot more like able. So now I have a few people who care about me and like me because I'm genuinely kind to everyone expecting nothing in return and am really good at art and stuff. I’m a total hypocrite. I tell all my friends that they’re not ugly. Whenever they say they’re ugly, I always argue with them. And it’s true, in my eyes they’re pretty. I spent a lot of time just looking and studying peoples faces. (lol yes im creepy) I’m jealous over other people’s perfect and blessed features. I just get completely jealous and sad when I see others with no makeup faces and their natural beauty. Hhhh I just completely hate how I look.
I could spent all day looking at myself and pointing out all my flaws. And yes I know I’m going to get replies saying “I bet you’re really pretty!” and like how do people say that when you don’t even know what I look like? Also everyone says that. They don’t want to sound rude so they say “you’re not ugly!” which I know they’re just saying it to not hurt my feelings. I don’t even get compliments from my family. I would say my siblings are good looking, which I hate how I was the unlucky one. Also yes, personality matters. I think I have a pretty nice and funny personality, but cmon, this is the real world. People who say “I don’t care about looks!” Are lying. Most people DO care about looks. Although, they’re might be a few people who actually tell the truth and don’t care about looks, but it’s rare.

That's because a mirror flips what you see when it reflects light, which means your upset reaction is based on the fact that you see something different that you expect. Until cameras were invented nobody could see themselves the correct way round, which is why he have no natural way of handling two different versions of ourselves at once.
You need to accept that whatever you see in a photo looks just as good as in the mirror, and focus only on the you that you're most used to seeing. You'll drive yourself mad otherwise.

In my opinion this should have a different title to help your view on yourself. Instead of the title being growing up ugly it could be Growing up Insecure because it’s changing your view on your self stating “I have Insecurities” has a different effect than “I was/are ugly”. (Plus it might cause less haters to feed at attack). The first step overcoming it is stating it as a problem instead of dwelling on it because you could potentially be stuck with that opinion. Imagine looking at the mirror and not being able to recognize your body features, getting scared about the proportions of own body (they look exaggerated) and getting obsessed everyday with small insignificant flaws in your body. This illness usually drives a person to anorexia, but it is also responsible for esthetic operations like breast implants or reconstruction of the face.

I remember when this came out, and I remember how much I related to her. Now I am rewatching it, relating to it all over again. I've come so far and yet I haven't at all. Great video! I can relate to this, especially being a black girl in a predominately white town. The beauty standards we’re subjected as women in this patriarchy are not fair, and for the longest time prevented me from seeing myself as beautiful. Even Snapchat filters that lightened my skin and made my nose smaller only reminded me of what I could never achieve. But after realizing that I saw beauty in everyone else, I found that it was unfair to put down myself. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder; if you remember that you’re beautiful and strong and amazing, then you are. And there will always be at least one person in the world who thinks you’re beautiful, so you are.

I started out as a child model, _but was very shy._ I became an easy target, even had a girl slap me with a stapler because she liked my bf and the staple was lodged in my skin; the popular girls used my lack of social skills & ostracized me before 4th grade. I quickly stopped brushing my hair & gained weight, my own dad calling out my weight gain & rats-nest hair; still average weight but fatter than the popular girls.
My parents tried but my dad thought the 3 children's care was women's work; my mom also had to work to help pay for our family of 3 kids, so there was only so much she could do.
I eventually started earning my own money & found a dance instructor; She became my mentor & helped me to understand that people use terrible words to make themselves feel better than others, because they're hurting too. When I danced, I felt beautiful.
I still only see about 1/4 of my pictures as pretty & only like my friends amature photography of me, but I've learned to be confident in my accumulated skillset instead.
I noticed confidence has a lot greater effect on people's perception of your beauty than how good your makeup is, or how interesting your hairdo is.
Please, understand we are our own greatest critics but you also need to be your own greatest cheerleader. I choose to be happy with myself & no one else has the right to take that away from me.

But that's wrong, in so many ways, a boyfriend or girlfriend is a partner that will love you no matter what, not a tool for popularity, you do not need make up to feel pretty, judging by your photos you are probably a young adult and still has a lot to learn, the things is, how can you learn to love somebody else, if you don't love yourself, don't paint an image of a person who was born to be unique, express who you are, because you do not need to be anybody else, and use that love spread from one person to another. Because, I was, I am, experiencing what you are right now, I've been bullied for 15 years, physically and emotionally, and I've had so many people walk out on me, and some many discourage me from my dreams and who I am as a person, but there's just one thing I always remembered, when I achieve my goals, the won't be a filter, and the joy you feel in yourself, and with people around you will make you realise that you are worth more than you think you are, and when you find the one you love spechie, appearances won't matter..

People keep looking for the support of bullies and jerks, look for the support of friends and loved ones. I thought I was ugly for ages, I'm no gorgeous, but I don't think that way anymore. You don't go after someone just because they're pretty. Sometimes you go after them even when they're obviously not. Self image is important, but not that important. You are way more than just what strangers think of you.

Well said!! Even at 20 years old I still think that I need to have a boyfriend so I can be popular. Hands down, I've never dated in my life. How interesting. You judge your appearance wayyy harshly to be realistic, honestly. Yor nose has a good shape, it's not big,or too round. Your skin is beautiful, smooth and very nice. Your hair is pretty. Your eyes are squinted-ish, but I actually find it appealing. Not ugly.
Like, your face is overall pretty harmonic, and your chin is roundish and delicate. Of course, you can think whatever you want, but I find it better to see what is good in your appearance, rather than closing your eyes to that. I mean, if people keep saying it, it's probably not a lie, right?
Being 100% truthful, I was expecting you to be a train wheck in terms of appearance. Well, then why do all I see is an average/above average girl? I can't think of you as ugly if I tried. Idk why you'd think only a Taylor Swift triangle, or Kim long, slim as hell face is all that's pretty, yours look very young, and not too round at all. It's more on the cute side. You don't have a giant nose, a awful, noticeably assimétrica (nobody is fully symmetrical, in reality) straw-like hair, double chin, fat face, overweight or actually have a bad looking smile. I see a 6, to 6,5/10 (that is, being really mean) which is actually above average.
You're not a perfect, Photoshop-came-true supemodel, but that doesn't make you an ugly person lol. People are so hard on their appearance, they can't actually see how others see them.
